ou’ve decided now is the time to rent a new space. Now you have another decision to make – choosing your property management company.

Check the reputation of the company or landlord you’re considering renting from. First, find out how long the company has been in business by asking the staff or visiting the company’s website to see what information they offer online. Most property management companies have well-established business practices to ensure that the customer comes first. If possible, visit communities managed by the company you’re considering and speak to some of the residents. Many property management companies can provide testimonials. Get a feel for each company and the staff. You should be comfortable and courteous asking questions and in turn you should expect to be treated with consideration and respect. Think twice about any property management company that doesn’t willingly provide any information you respectfully request. Putting the customer first and offering the best quality rental space for your money is a property management company’s ultimate goal. kay, I get it, it’s cold outside. That balcony may as well be a barren Siberian expanse – your morning coffee ritual out there stopped way back in October.

But it doesn’t have to be like that! Apartment living offers options to those that can’t enjoy the snowbird lifestyle, but want to avoid the weather. Amenities. If you opt for an apartment with great amenities like an indoor pool, fitness centre, library, screening room, games room, billiards tables or business centre, you can enjoy your home the way you’d enjoy a resort. You don’t need to stay cocooned up in your apartment, get out and enjoy some activities without grabbing your coat. And if you get to know the neighbours you’ll have company to call on, too, or playdates for the kids that are just an elevator ride away. Underground parking. If you’ve got to go out, at least you don’t need to face the elements. If it snows, you’re not brushing off your car. If the mercury plunges you’re not sitting in an icebox waiting for it to warm up while you watch your breath steam up the rearview mirror. Location. If you need to take transit and rely on walking – well I’m afraid you’re going to have to go outside. But you can minimize that by choosing the right location. You may want to choose your apartment based on what businesses and services are close to home. You may want to make sure there is a transit stop literally at the front door. These can greatly reduce your outdoor exposure. Some communities have onsite conveniences or are attached to a plaza or mall. Some cities even have buildings that offer indoor passage to transit – subways, LRTs etc. Plan your lifestyle right and you can avoid as much of winter as you want! Renting is a great choice – whether avoiding the winter or embracing it. Find the perfect home, we’re here to help! ACCORDING TO HISTORIANS, IT WAS ELIZABETH SIMCOE, WIFE OF TORONTO’S FOUNDER, COLONEL JOHN GRAVES SIMCOE, WHO NAMED THE BOLD WHITE CLIFFS TO THE EAST OF OLD TORONTO “SCARBOROUGH,” as they reminded her of the majestic limestone cliffs in Scarborough, England. Formed by erosion after the last Ice Age, the Bluffs, which extend 14 km along the edge of Lake Ontario, are really the shoreline of the ancient Lake Iroquois, and rise to 65m above the water at their highest point. Mrs. Simcoe and her husband talked of one day building a summer home near this picturesque location. Although this hope was never realized, today you can enjoy the natural beauty and many other delightful features of the community of Cliffside, which has been built along the edge of Scarborough Bluffs.

IT’S A NECESSITY FOR ANY FAMILY ROOM, the landing place for all, and the centre of attention: it’s the coffee table. I did a segment on CityLine last year about various coffee tables – sizes, shapes, fi nishes and how to accessorize them. We kept the same living room set throughout the segment, and swapped out only the coffee table and it’s accent pieces, creating many different looks. Everyone was so surprised at how different the room looked each time. If you want to give your space a whole new look, a coffee table might be the way to do it. I’ve narrowed down the vast selection of tables to my top seven picks: 1. WASHED WOOD & METAL RECTANGLE If you’re looking for durability and practicality, this is my number one choice. The typical size of a rectangular coffee table is approximately 56 inches wide by 31 inches deep by 17 inches high, making it the perfect size for displaying several groupings of items such as collectables. For added storage space, or the perfect spot for magazines and books, look for this type of table with bottom shelf that hovers just off the floor. 2. ODD-SHAPED GLASS COFFEE TABLE Transparent fi nishes like glass are sometimes all a space needs to make it feel more open and airy. This classic Noguchi-inspired table’s irregular shape adds interest and character to a typical furniture setting. Pairing this coffee table with a sectional sofa looks phenomenal. Accessorize this with opaque items at varying heights, keeping the items toward the centre point of the surface.

3. THREE-PIECE OVAL/RECTANGLE COCKTAIL TABLE I love this classic three-piece table because it’s so functional. Those who entertain favour it because they can use the two demi-lune ends as side tables which allows for more spread out landing areas for drinks and snacks. The shape and style of these tables are so pronounced that no accessories are needed – it stands alone beautifully. 4. OVERSIZED SQUARE UPHOLSTERED OTTOMAN Comfort and cosiness are instantly injected into a room when you bring in a large ottoman covered in fabric or leather. Another family favourite, this piece is versatile because it also functions as extra seating. To accessorize, simply look at the top of the ottoman as a grid divided into four sections, and accessorize each section individually (e.g., 1. stacked books, 2. pillow/throw, 3. bowl/vase, 4. tray). 5. GROUPING OF STOOLS Combining two to six of the same or different stools together to create one coffee table is a look I really love. This idea is great for small spaces where you might not have the room to bring in a full-size coffee table, and, again, functionality wins big here because it can be moved around the room or even from room to room. No accessories are needed for this style of table. 6. LOW, FAUX STONE COFFEE TABLE Bringing in a piece like this is completely unexpected which is why it works so well in any decor. The look is more natural and less refi ned, and it helps in visually weighing down a space that lacks balance (but it’s not actually heavy at all). A lower coffee table is in need of accessories that have height, such as a globe, a stack of books and an orchid flower. 7. ROUND, WOOD TABLE I’ve found that this traditional table is an all-time favourite among almost everyone. What’s not to like about the smooth and soft curves and the classy fi nish?
