veryone has to live somewhere, and in a city of 4 million people, that’s a lot of homes. Toronto’s rental community is enormous. With so many incredible rental opportunities and great property management companies, we found our niche 25 years ago, connecting great apartments with suitable renters in search of a home.

The industry was much different 25 years ago. Those vacancy signs on the front lawn were key in the 1980’s. Ads were placed in local news papers and people looking for new apartments were just as likely to ask a friend as they were to poke through the TheRentersGuide.ca notice board at the local grocery, hoping for a good lead. And then, in 1989, Renters News – as Renters Guide was known back then – hit the street. Our boxes were already distributing the very successful AutoTrader magazine, the publication that changed the face of used car sales. Adding in Renters Guide, we revolutionized the way that apartment hunters could find their new homes, we created an easy solution TheRentersGuide.ca for advertisers to reach those renters. 10

We had no idea how iconic those bright yellow boxes on every corner would become, but the magazine took off from the start. Suddenly property management companies and landlords had a voice! Instantly, someone in need of an apartment had a great and easy-to-search selection! But it was more than just supply and demand. With advertisements containing pricing, pictures and some information about amenities, Renters Guide was delivering qualified renters to fill vacancies. It was no longer necessary to divvy up advertising budgets between three-line classified ads in multiple resources. Instead, advertisers could focus on catching the eye of prospective tenants because Renters Guide quickly set TheRentersGuide.ca the standard in rental advertising – the go-to for both tenant and landlord. By focussing the search and delivering it frequently and conveniently, we realized

that we’d become a very important piece in the rental puzzle – and we took on that responsibility quite seriously. Renters Guide is more than a business, it’s about helping people find one of the most important and essential parts of life – a place to live – their home. Renters Guide began to source information from industry professionals and include features, news and articles that would help: moving advice, information about apartment living, articles about communities, so that people could get a sense of new neighbourhoods, community news – and more.“We’ve addressed some key issues in Renters Guide editorially since Elisa took the helm as Editor in 2009,”says Susan Legge, Editor-InChief and Director of Content.“And we’ve seen the property management companies we work with in the GTA hard at work improving and evolving their businesses in order to give their residents the best rental experience and lifestyle possible.”Renters are doing their homework and are seeking out top-notch landlords, she said.“They want a property management company who understands their lifestyle needs and they expect a seamless experience from the time the lease is signed until the day they move out. The rental lifestyle is unique, and we’ve highlighted this in our editorial content. We’ve also been instrumental in bringing some lifestyle tips and advice into the magazine too by including articles such as recipes and decorating advice which make for an all-round enjoyable read, whether you’re actively looking for a rental or just browsing.” Kate Nash, a long-time employee with Renters Guide, joined the team about 15 years ago. Kate started as a sales assistant, moved on to become one of the industry’s highest achieving media sales people, and onto her current position with the magazine as National Manager of Business Development. As the Internet became more accessible, Kate recalls how Renters Guide was one of the first to realize and optimize the online search. Launching RentersNews.ca, the website was quickly embraced and TheRentersGuide.ca set the standard.“It was one of the first to market with unbelievable traffic that grew year over year. We were early in

marketing the rental industry online and we introduced the industry to its online/ print bundle,” Kate says.“We were the core resource in rental advertising.” From the start, the magazine got on board with various rental associations such at the Greater Toronto Apartment Association (GTAA) and the Federation of Rental-Housing Providers of Ontario (FRPO), becoming strong supporters and sponsors of community initiatives and industry events. The magazine also became quite involved in the community’s charitable associations, ensuring that, beyond just financial contributions, we used our publication’s reach and audience to spread awareness.“One of the charities we’ve always supported quite heartily is the Spring H.O.P.E. Food Drive.,” says Anne-Marie Breen, Associate Publisher & Online Advertising Solutions Manager for Renters Guide.“It’s a rental-industry specific charitable effort, and we were committed from the time it was launched. Renters Guide puts Spring H.O.P.E. on the cover preceding the big event and ensures it receives editorial as well as free advertising, of course, as much publicity as possible.” Renters Guide gives support to a wide variety of charities, and continues to reach out to connect with groups that affect, assist and support our readers and our communities, with editorial and magazine content too. Along the way we’ve heard the stories and spoken to residents. We’ve heard how delighted people were to find their new home, how they didn’t realize what was available in their area, that they thought they would have to struggle to find something within their budget, but found it easy to find the perfect home for their family within our pages. We’ve had feedback about articles and interest in learning more about different properties and programs. “We’ve changed, grown with the times and responded to feedback,” says Jacky Hill, Vice President, Wall2Wall Media.“At its launch 25 years ago, the magazine was called Renters News. Styled after the newspaper and published in magazine

format, it was all newsprint stock. But it wasn’t long before it adapted and became vibrant with glossy pages and full-colour ads that jumped off the page. A decade ago Renters News was recognized as the magazine that published the most glossy pages per year in North America. In the summer of 2010, to create confluence with the very successful portfolio of sister real estate publications New Condo Guide, New Home Guide and Resale Home Guide, the magazine was renamed Renters Guide. As we neared our 25th anniversary we took the innovation even further and transformed into a full-gloss publication.” Even more has developed behind the scenes at Renters Guide, as a key part of Wall2Wall Media’s extraordinary digital transformation. Our corporate identity has become strong, and the products we’ve released are being embraced by the industry. Helping our clients modernize, we now offer website creation, content development and Search Engine Optimization (SEO) for both new and existing websites. October 2012, according to the fall Rental Market Survey2 released recently by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). “An increase in the supply of purposebuilt rental apartments was partially offset by increasing rental housing demand across the country. Demand for rental housing was supported by both higher levels of full-time employment in the 15 to 24 age group, and a rise in net migration. Meanwhile, demand for rental condominium apartments remained strong,” said Mathieu Laberge, Deputy Chief Economist at CMHC’s Market Analysis Centre. The results of CMHC’s fall survey reveal that, in October 2013, the major centres with the lowest vacancy rates in the primary apartment rental market were in Calgary (1.0 per cent), Edmonton (1.4 per cent) and Toronto (1.6 per cent). The centres with the highest vacancy rates were in Saint John (11.4 per cent), TheRentersGuide.ca Moncton (9.1 per cent) and Charlottetown (7.9 per cent). Overall, the average rent for twobedroom apartments in existing structures across Canada’s 35 major TheRentersGuide.ca centres increased 2.5 per cent between

October 2012 and October 2013. The average rent for a two-bedroom apartment in new and existing structures was $920 in October 20133. The highest average monthly rents for two-bedroom apartments in new and existing structures in Canada’s major centres were in Vancouver ($1,281), Calgary ($1,224) and Toronto ($1,213). The lowest average monthly rents for two-bedroom apartments in new and existing structures were in Trois-Rivières ($555), Saguenay ($571) and Sherbrooke ($591). CMHC’s October 2013 Rental Market Survey also covers condominium apartments offered for rent in 11 large urban centres, including Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal. In this particular segment of the secondary rental market, rental condominium vacancy rates ranged from a high of 5.9 per cent in Québec City to a low of 0.7 per cent in Saskatoon, holding steady in most centres from October 2012. Average monthly rents for two-bedroom condominium apartments were highest

Major centres are based on Statistics Canada Census Metropolitan Areas (CMAs), with the exception of the Ottawa-Gatineau CMA, which is treated as two centres for Rental Market Survey purposes, and Charlottetown, which is a Census Agglomeration (CA). CMHC’s Rental Market Survey is conducted twice a year, in April and October, to provide vacancy, availability and rent information on privately initiated structures in all centres with populations of 10,000 and more across Canada. Reports are released in June and December. 2

The fall survey covers apartment and row structures containing at least three rental units and, unlike the spring survey, reports information on: a) Smaller geographic zones within centres; b) The secondary rental market (rented condominium apartments, single detached, semi-detached, duplexes or accessory apartments). Year-over-year comparisons of average rents can be slightly misleading because rents in newly built structures tend to be higher than in existing buildings. Excluding new structures and focusing on structures existing in both theTheRentersGuide.ca October 2012 and October 2013 surveys provides a better indication of actual rent increases paid by tenants. 3

Code of Conduct guides actions through CERTIFIED RENTAL BUILDING PROGRAM B Y TED WHI T EHEAD

ne of the many benefits of choosing an apartment in a rental building that bears the Certified Rental Building Program (CRBP) distinction is knowing that the owners and/or property managers have agreed to conduct business according to a Member Code of Conduct.

This brings great peace of mind to renters, and offers CRBP members a clear, concise reminder of what is expected of them once their buildings have been granted certification status. The CRBP is managed and operated by the Federation of Rental Housing Providers of Ontario (FRPO) with the goal of protecting the interests of all multi-residential apartment building stakeholders – and the Code of Conduct plays a major role in accomplishing that goal.

Of course, members are required to comply with municipal, provincial and federal legislation and by-laws when it comes to the operation of residential buildings, and the Code of Conduct contains a reminder. There is also an item that covers the agreement to not discriminate against anyone on the basis of race, colour, creed, gender, sexual orientation, family status, national origin, receipt of public assistance or source of income. Beyond this point, CRBP members agree to report to the Program’s administration any laws or policies that they may find unfair or prejudicial to renters or rental housing providers.

The key word in the Code of Conduct is “professionalism.”

Much of the Code of Conduct is based on the golden rule. For example, there is an item stipulating that members agree to treat their tenants with respect, and should expect to receive respect in return. All parties involved in a rental residence situation should know and uphold their responsibilities. If and when a dispute arises, the building owner or manager is expected to resolve it in good faith.

CRBP members agree to operate TheRentersGuide.ca their buildings with high standards of integrity and honesty – and that goes for renters, suppliers, employees and contractors. Managers and owners must do their best to make sure the apartment building is safe and secure TheRentersGuide.ca

Tenants should be aware that there is a mediation service offered by the Ontario Rental Housing Tribunal for cases that are not resolved adequately between the parties at the building level. Fairness is the operating principle that members agree to pursue,

along with avoidance of and protection against fraud, misrepresentation and unethical practices of any kind. Another aspect of the Code includes continual education, training and communication. Members agree to ongoing efforts to uphold and improve professional standards. This benefits everyone, from renters to managers, owners, and professional industry organizations. Fairness, conscientiousness, honesty, integrity, respect – these are the concepts that form the basis for the CRBP Code of Conduct. These are excellent values that should guide all business interactions, and in fact, life in general. The bottom line result for tenants is improved communication with their building manager and/or owner, as well as a better quality of life for all parties. CMHC’s Rental Unit Evaluation Worksheet can help you evaluate your options and make an informed decision. When you rent a place, the landlord will usually ask you to sign a rental agreement, commonly known as a“lease.”Rental agreements vary from one province or territory to another, but they generally include the names of the landlord and tenant, the address of the property, the amount of the rent and what it includes, the date when the rent is due each month, the amount of any security or damage deposits, the term of the rental period, as well as things like who is responsible for maintaining the property, whether there are any restrictions on the tenant, and when and how the landlord can enter the premises. Once you’ve signed your lease, it’s time to move in! Moving can be a hectic time. A planning checklist, such as CMHC’s Three Weeks to Moving Day, can help you keep track of all the details, and help make sure your move goes as smoothly as possible. Before you move in, you and your landlord should inspect your new home together. Use an Initial Inspection Worksheet to document everything you notice, so you won’t be held liable for any preexisting damage when you leave. Once you’re living in your new home, make sure you and your landlord are clear on who is responsible for what, especially with issues such as emergency or regular repairs, rent increases, or how TheRentersGuide.ca to handle any complaints that might arise. In the event of an emergency (such as a leaking roof or broken furnace on a cold

winter day), try to contact your landlord or emergency contact at least twice, and give them a reasonable amount of time to respond. If you can’t reach your landlord and have to authorize emergency repairs yourself, make sure to document and keep all paperwork related to the repair for later reimbursement. If a problem arises that you can’t work out directly with your landlord, check with your provincial or territorial rental authority to find out if there are any tenant advocacy groups in your community. Do not withhold rent to pay for repairs, as this can be grounds to have you evicted. When your lease expires, you may sign a new lease, or you might shift to a monthto-month lease. Depending on where you live, your landlord could also give notice that they will be increasing your rent. Eventually, the time will come when you’re ready to end your tenancy and move out. When this time comes, you

Remember: you may need your old landlord to give you a reference in the future. So do your best to leave under good terms. Give them the proper amount of notice in writing. Make any necessary repairs. Allow the landlord to show the home to potential new tenants. And leave the place in as good a condition as you found it, so the next tenants will be able to enjoy their new home as much as you did. Everyone has a list of things they’d like to accomplish, and a new year is the perfect time for a fresh start. Getting organized is a major resolution, and not an easy one to keep. It’s even difficult to figure out where to start on the road to becoming organized. Start by trying out some of these organizational tactics. Easy to incorporate, these little changes may keep the big goal on track. Keep your New Year’s resolutions. If you’ve resolved to get organized this year but are already feeling discouraged, detach from the results and focus on the process. We often fail to reach our goals simply because they were unrealistic in the first place. If it took 10 years for your clutter to accumulate, you can’t expect yourself to clear it all in a few days. The key is to do only what you can, but do it consistently. Just 15 minutes a day spent organizing will add up to seven hours a month and 84 hours a year! Commit to 15 minutes every day and feel good about making organizing part of your daily life rather than dwelling on how much more there is to do. Tackle quick tasks now. Adopt a “do it now” policy for anything that can be done in less than five minutes. For example, when a form needs to be filled out or a cheque has to be mailed, resist putting it off until the due date – do it now. This ensures that it won’t be forgotten or misplaced and frees up the mental energy that unfinished business consumes. Time-saving ways to shop. Pressed for time? Rather than wasting time running back and forth to the store, consider shopping online. The time and gas savings usually offset the cost of shipping. Some sites offer free delivery when you spend a minimum amount; to save costs, keep an on-going wish list and buy only when you have several items on the list. You can purchase everything from office supplies to groceries and furniture online, but make sure the site is secure before entering credit card information (look for the padlock in the browser window). Keep rooms tidy in less than two minutes. Items that don’t belong in a room are the main contributors to visual clutter. Get into the habit of removing ‘move elsewhere items’ when you leave the room, and placing them on their way to where they do belong. For example, if something belongs upstairs, place it at the bottom of the staircase and take it to the proper room the next time you go up. You’ll be amazed at how effective this technique can be in keeping rooms tidy with minimal effort.

Tidy doesn’t mean perfect. Organizing is not necessarily about how looks, it’s about how it works. If you are not naturally neat, avoid storing everything behind closed doors. Not only can it make you feel ill at ease, it may also be virtually impossible for you to maintain that kind of system. Choose furniture pieces

that provide visible storage instead, like a coffee table with shelves underneath. Keep the system low maintenance. If you never seem to get around to hanging your clothes on hangers, place some open bins in your closet. Purging for “fraidy-cats.” If you keep every paper that enters your home because you’re afraid you might need it someday, here’s a way to ease the fear. Designate a temporary holding tank, a box or bin for papers you don’t need, which you’ll dump once a month. Knowing that these papers won’t be tossed immediately and will be there “just in case,” lessens the anxiety of letting them go. Store your sheets in sets in the linen closet. For each set, fold the flat sheet, the fitted sheet and one pillowcase. Place the set inside the remaining pillowcase. These tidy packages stack nicely on the shelves and make changing the sheets quick and easy. Fabric softener sheets tucked into the linen closet will keep bedding smelling fresh. Encourage filing, discourage piling. Keep extra file folders in the back of your filing drawer, and have a label-maker handy. Having these supplies ready to go will encourage you to quickly create new files as you need them rather than pile papers on top of your filing cabinet “just for now.” Accomplish more in your day by knowing your style. Understand your high/low energy periods and schedule your daily tasks accordingly. Tackle tough tasks during high-energy periods and less-demanding tasks during low ones. Also consider your work style when planning your day. Do you work best in short bursts or long stretches? You’ll be amazed at how much more you can accomplish by keeping your style in mind when planning your daily activities.

ften people who are in debt say they no longer want to be in debt. And often they take the steps to get themselves out. But, it seems to me, just as often people who claim they want to get out of debt do little to change their behaviour and their outcome. They keep on doing the things that got them into debt in the first place. Here are some questions you may want to ask about why youâ€™re in the hole.

Do you buy stuff you don’t need? The biggest cue that you’ve got the impulse monkey on your back are the things you have bought but no used: the clothes with the tags still on, the shoes you have yet to wear, the new dishes you’ve used just once or twice in the six months that you’ve owned them. Impulse shoppers are the first to admit they have a problem and the last to do anything about it. If you’re an impulse shopper, you need to remove the fuel for the impulse. That means cutting up your credit cards – or disabling them in some other fashion – and limiting the amount of cash you carry. It also means leaving your debit card at home unless you’re headed out to take care of a need: gas, groceries, etc. When you do go shopping, you have to use a list and never go off-list. Window shopping is torture for the impulse shopper so don’t browse stores or participate in this bonding ritual since you’re just teasing yourself by drooling over a bunch of stuff you don’t need. Do you use credit to buy things you can’t afford to buy with cash? Hey, when you spend money you don’t have by using your credit card, line of credit or overdraft, you’re doing the wrong thing, plain and simple. If you can’t afford to pay for something in cash today, you should not be buying that thing, I don’t care how important you think it is, how great a deal you’re getting, or how desperate you feel. Using credit is no way to get out of debt. Put away all forms of credit and commit to building yourself a budget that balances. If you want something, you’ll have to give something else up to accumulate the cash you need to buy it. If you can’t come up with the cash, you must not want it badly enough. Do you buy things for a one-time use that you could borrow from a friend or rent? Practically everyone is guilty of this. You need something such as a TheRentersGuide.ca sewing machine or power washer twice a year so you go and buy one and then

watch it – and the money you spent, likely on credit – sit and grow cobwebs (and interest charges?). What’s with us all? We have to own everything we ever use? In the old days friends borrowed from each other and stuff got way more use. Now our possessions are so much a part of who we are we a) hate to lend and b) hate to have to admit we don’t already have one. Dumb! And why do we feel we need to apologize because we don’t have the right kind of wine glasses?“Sorry, I only have these cheap glasses.”It’s a glass for heaven’s sake. Do you buy certain brands because they are a status symbol? While any car gets you from point A to point B, the high-cost, brand-name buggies come with“oohs”and“ahhs”from friends and relatives. Ditto the D&G sunglasses, the LV handbags, the CL shoes . . . I could go on forever. If you’re paying a premium to have a brand name, you have to ask yourself why. Is it because you don’t have

confidence in your own sense of style? Is it because you’re trying to emulate the dudes and dames of TV and movie fame, wearing what they wear, driving what they drive, eating what they eat? How come? Is your life so sad that you’re trying to escape? Hey, I’m all for spending your money on the things that bring you pleasure, so if you’re not using credit to make expensive brands part of your image, I’m not talking to you. But if you are using credit, what makes you think you have the right to this stuff if you can’t afford to pay for it?

eaceful, harmonious apartment living is all about treating others with respect and consideration. When you act with sensitivity to your neighbours, it’s amazing how others will respond. The following are 10 etiquette tips that make for good neighbours.

Keep the noise down. Apartment walls are notoriously thin, and at the best of times, sharing walls is bound to mean hearing your neighbours, so try to consider whether your neighbours really want to hear your activities. Keep in mind that people have different sleeping schedules. Neighbours could be working at night and sleeping when you are awake! Likewise, 10pm is not the appropriate time to vacuum or hang pictures. Avoid loud noise at all times, but particularly late at night and early in the morning, especially arguing, playing music or watching the television at excessive volumes. If you like it loud, consider getting a pair of headphones for your home entertainment. High heels on the floors, bouncing a ball and other repetitive noises will affect the neighbour below, whose ceiling is attached to your floor. The click-clacking of shoes can become quite an irritant.

Clothing is not optional! Remember to dress appropriately with at least a shirt and sandals when taking out trash, recycling, doing laundry or getting something from your car.

Respect and maintain common areas as if they were an extension of your own home. Tidy up after yourself in the laundry room. After using the barbecue or party room, take out all trash and leave as you found it.

Check up on your laundry regularly. Don’t leave it sitting in the washer or dryer after it has finished, it annoys other people who are waiting to use the machine. Invest in a drying rack and dry delicate items inside, not on your balcony.

Be aware of your neighbours but also respect their right to privacy. This means not making their business – like when they enter and leave the building, where they are going – or who they are with – your business. While some communities are friendly and open, try to avoid the gossip mill.

When cooking, open your window so that it doesn’t smell up the entire floor. Your dinner may smell appetizing to you – but not everyone needs to know what’s on the menu. And when several apartments on the same floor share their dinner aromas it can be an unappetizing sensory overload. There is nothing worse than emerging from the elevator to a pungent-smelling hall.

Be cognizant of, and promptly report any crimes or suspicious persons in the building. Be aware of your surroundings, you and your neighbours should be looking out for ear other. It’s your duty to report any signs of domestic disputes, child abuse, or suspicious persons in the building. This is not just a matter of etiquette, but of community safety. Be proactive by maintaining secure practices like locking your apartment door and not letting strangers access your building.

Ensure that your pet is a good neighbour, too. To prevent accidents, walk your pet regularly, and make sure TheRentersGuide.ca he or she isn’t howling all day or barking all night. The balcony shouldn’t be the doggy bathroom, and any accidents out there should be cleaned promptly

Be a model citizen in the parking lot. Keep the music down and drive slowly and carefully, anticipating seniors and children. Likewise, stick to your own parking space and make sure your guests do the same. Even if you know your neighbour works during the day, stay out of their assigned spot. They may have to come home for a quick break.

Waiting for a ride? Honking is just plain rude. Ask your carpool driver to give you a quick ring or text. Better yet, be waiting in front of the building and be prepared.

Etiquette is just a set of guidelines for acting in accordance with the needs of others. If you treat your neighbours with respect and courtesy, you’ll help to foster a harmonious apartment community that you too will enjoy.

I’ve often said“go big or go home!”– or maybe“go big and go home!” – but lately people are also going the opposite route, and choosing a size extra small. Rather than compromising on versions of favourite furnishings shrunk slightly to fit into a compact floor plan, choose statement pieces – big or small – that will bring full satisfaction.

t’s already 2014, time to take fresh inspiration from the new trends it brings. Although it never pays to cling to trends too closely, they can be a great source of ideas that will add a little life when you find your space suffering from the wintertime blahs. Here’s my suggestion of five furniture trends to watch, that you can count on sticking around longer than a year.

How to do it: For the ultimate seating plan, fit in the largest sofa you can (for when one or two people are lounging comfortably) and add European-sized compact seats as side chairs to fit in the maximum number of guests during get-togethers. Miniature chairs in particular are a trend â€“ even beyond the usual 18-inch seat. Petite accent chairs (child sized or even smaller) are charming conversation pieces nestled up to a coffee table, and can be used as occasional side tables when you need to rest a book or beverage. Rugs Over the past few seasons weâ€™ve really seen the return of the area rug, and now the magic carpet has officially landed. In an apartment space with hard floors, area rugs of all shapes and sizes are an excellent way to bring warmth, colour, and a feeling of home, even in the most modernist schemes â€“ they look excellent paired with traditional furnishings or contrasted against sleek minimal forms. The timeless Persian rug especially brings a heritage appeal, although contemporary rugs come in endless patterns and prints to suit any taste.

How to do it: For a living area, choose a rug large enough to tuck under furniture legs. Add a runner (a skinny rectangle) in a kitchen or hallway, or a large rug to any room for the feeling of carpeting (leaving approximately a 12-inch border around the room). The inky tones in classic traditional rugs are neutral enough to blend into most schemes. For an already neutral space, consider this an opportunity to add some colour â€“ you can roll the rug away or move it to a new room between seasons for a little change up. for modern settings as well. The geometric forms created by tufting can enrich the look of even the most streamlined sofa, and can be achieved without buttons for a more subtle quilted effect. How to do it: A tufted leather sofa is a must have investment piece, for a look that speaks to luxury but is also practical â€“ the material will hold up to wear and be easy to maintain. Origami People have been developing a fascination with facets, and this love of all things angular is leading to a rise in the ancient art of Origami as an inspiration for complex bent forms in various areas of design. Like with tufting, the angles break up a material for visual interest and allow light to catch the item in different ways, adding the subtle drama that contemporary spaces were missing in years past. How to do it: Table bases are an easily overlooked detail that can benefit from a more fun form. I recently found this chunky golden nugget of a side table to make a simple statement in a clientâ€™s home â€“ order yours from boutiques like Lâ€™Atelier. Origami also makes for great art, brought to a large scale and in new materials, like the simple but intriguing Fold sculpture I recently spied at avenue-road.com.

Plastic For the most future-forward look, itâ€™s hard to beat the appeal of plastic. With people once again celebrating colour, the vivid tones of translucent materials like acrylic and polycarbonate will be the ultimate source of a hue infusion. Semi-transparent materials work best grouped together (so their colours overlap and intermingle) or near a light source that will shine through and spread the colour love around. How to do it: For a quick addition, a few floating shelves (such as the Shellfish series by Kartell, available through elte.com) can brighten up a wall â€“ you may not even want to bother finding anything to put on them. To make a strong synthetic statement, try a transparent coffee table or nightstand. A piece like this visually floats to keep an airy look while adding a shock of colour that defines a furniture grouping.
