As the days grow warmer and we open our windows to let in the fresh air, we also risk letting in pesky insects and flies. A friend of mine recently told me the tranquility of her sunroom is being disrupted by some wasps. So far, she has managed to find someone to guide the stinging, buzzing pests outside, but she’s finding it hard to relax in her sunroom, lest they return. Her husband suggested calling an exterminator to see if there is a nest, but although my friend is afraid of wasps, she doesn’t want to kill them.

I get her desire to respect all living things, but frankly, I’ve never been a fan of spiders, flies, ants or anything creepy crawly when I’m outside, never mind when they invade my living space. As kindhearted as I am, it’s wham-slam, into the garbage can as soon as I see an ant, spider or bug in my house. And if I had an infestation, I would call my landlord to take care of it.

If you’re being pestered by unwanted house guests, call your landlord. It is their responsibility to take care of the problem. Most landlords appreciate knowing about a situation when it starts, as they would prefer to keep their properties clean.

DON’T BUG ME GETTING RID OF CREEPY, CRAWLY HOUSE GUESTS

by MARLENE EISNER It can happen to anyone at any time: you’re sitting in the living room peacefully watching TV and munching on popcorn when suddenly you’re hit by an unwanted guest — a carpenter ant.

The lowly black insect may seem lonely crawling along the edge of your coffee table, but you know that if there is one, there have got to be more.

Household pests can crop up in some rental properties. These opportunistic pests live anywhere they can find food, water, warmth and shelter. Some pests can become a serious health hazard and your landlord is responsible for getting rid of them. If you’ve already tried to fix the problem with a product from the hardware

store but have had no success, tell your landlord. He or she is obliged to hire a professional exterminator.

Most landlords want to help, as it’s in their best interest to keep their properties clean. If your landlord is reluctant to do anything, the local

health department can aid you in handling the pest problem.

Although you may never be disturbed by carpenter ants or silverfish, it’s a good idea to learn how to identify pests, their risks and how to get rid of them.

Seal honey, jelly, fruit and meat.

Keep areas around the outside of house free of wood.

Spread diatomaceous earth along the foundation.

If infestation is present, locate and destroy the nest.

ADVICE | RENTERS’ HELP

EVICTION DURING RENTAL RENOVATIONS Your landlord has the legal right to ask you to move out for major renovations, repairs or even rebuilds to your rental building. As a tenant in a legal rental agreement, you have some rights, too.

Minor renovations like new paint or countertops don’t count, but if the renos make your place unsafe or unliveable, you’ll have to move out. In most provinces, your landlord must give you the same amount of notice to terminate the tenancy as required by the rental agreement.

You have the right of first refusal, meaning you get first dibs on moving back into the new-andimproved unit once renovations are complete with the same rent, and the same provincial rental increase rules apply. In order to

exercise your right of first refusal, you must put it in writing before you move out and within the specific timeframe outlined in your provincial Rental Tenancy Act. In the case of multi-unit buildings, your landlord could be responsible to compensate you equal to three months’ rent or the amount of time you’ll be relocated, whichever is less. You may also negotiate a reasonable compensation amount. Even if you don’t move back in, they might have to compensate you for up to three months’ rent.

If the building is to be converted into a non-rental property or the landlord would like it for their own use, they could owe you compensation as well. The rules change if a government

agency orders the building to be demolished or cleared of its tenants and in these cases, compensation might not apply.

If you decide to terminate your tenancy and move out before the date on your landlord’s termination notice and decline your right of first refusal, you might not be eligible for compensation.

Check with your provincial Rental Tenancy Act as details of this legislation regarding terminating tenancy due to renovations may differ slightly from province to province.

Once a gritty, semi-industrial neighbourhood, London’s Old East Village (OEV) has undergone a physical and cultural transformation in recent years, making it an increasingly attractive destination for renters. The area is bordered by Oxford Street to the north, Highbury Ave. to the east, Adelaide in the west, and extends as far south as the rail lines just below Bridges Street.

The typical OEV resident is community-minded who loves to give back and enjoys a lowcarbon-footprint lifestyle. You’ll see people walking and biking everywhere here, and a local parents’ group even organizes a “Walking School Bus” in the neighbourhood from September through June, for kids to travel to class together on foot. There’s an annual Block Party summer street festival on Dufferin Ave that attracts huge numbers of locals and visitors.

in overlapping Carling offer a taste of suburbia while the old reflects a rebranding of its workingclass roots. Vintage shops and independent cafes proliferate in the area. The newly gentrified main drag along Dundas Street still retains its local colour and history, with the venerable “Reeg” (St. Regis Tavern).

Old East Villagers are an eclectic bunch, and one might wonder how such a diverse population of cool cats, retirees and regular working-class folk get along. The answer would appear to be tremendously well, given the number of community members who dedicate their time to enhancing the lives of their neighbours through the volunteerrun Community Association and Business Improvement Area.

You’ll find a pretty wide array of amenities on offer. McMahen Park is home to the Carling Heights Optimist Community Centre, a multi-purpose facility. When it comes to entertainment, OEV can’t be beat. Aeolian Hall is home to the London Youth Symphony and London Community Orchestra. The Palace Theatre,

The London Clay Art Centre and more offer variety.

London Transit operates several routes along major streets in the area, including Quebec, Dundas, York/Florence, Oxford and Adelaide. There’s a good network of bike paths for cyclists, and a plan to create more bike lanes. It’s very pedestrian-friendly, probably one of the best places to live in London if you don’t own a car.

Commuters have easy access to the rest of the city.

There are still stretches of lessthan-friendly-seeming industrial sites, some in use, some long forgotten. While much of Dundas Street has been noticeably cleaned up, it’s still an area where petty crimes and street hassles can’t be ruled out. But it’s nothing a seasoned city type wouldn’t expect, and by other cities’ standards, pretty tame.

Anne Marshall has lived in New York City, Glasgow (Scotland), Greensboro (NC), Toronto, and somehow ended up back in the fabulous small city of Guelph, where she grew up. She loves nothing more than exploring new areas, peering into other people’s apartments, houses and yards.
