EDITOR’S NOTE
WELCOME SOME GREEN INTO YOUR SPACE April is officially Earth month, a time to think about ways to be more sustainable in your daily living all year round. As a renter, there are many things you can do to be eco-conscious. The most obvious are to reduce your consumption, reuse what you have and recycle what you can’t use anymore. A fun way to be more green is to actually add greenery to your indoor and outdoor living space. Plants are not only beautiful and give texture and colour to a room, these marvelous, living organisms clean toxins from the air and give us much needed oxygen. If you think your green thumb is underdeveloped, Plant Perfection on page 26 is a great guide to give you some direction. Soon you’ll be a pro at choosing the right plants that will thrive and greenify your home. For renters with a balcony or patio, check out pg. 12. Outdoor design and lifestyle expert and TV personality Carson Arthur shares three hacks on growing a balcony garden. Imagine kicking back after a long day’s work surrounded by your own mini-garden or flower bed. It doesn’t get much better than that. When it’s time to make a move, let Renters Guide help. You can also check us out at NextHome.ca and get ready to find your new next home!

EARTH DAY
CONSUME LESS, PLAY MORE FOR
EARTH DAY 2018 Earth Day Canada, founded in 1990, is a national charity that inspires and supports people across the country to connect with nature and build resilient communities. Every year it leads an Earth Day campaign on April 22, in conjunction with free, yearround programs that get people of all ages outside and interacting with the environment to inspire a commitment to stewardship and conservation. The organization works closely with school-aged children and youth through its EcoKids and EarthPLAY programs to put outdoor play back into the lives of children. It used to be that children spent many hours of the day playing outside, building forts, climbing trees, inventing new games and getting their hands dirty, without any interference from grownups. This type of play is rapidly disappearing. Today, less than 20 per cent of kids engage in the kind of outdoor play that builds resilience, self-confidence and well-being. Kids who don’t get outside and who aren’t stimulated by their environment, won’t grow up motivated to protect 10 RentersGuide.ca
the planet. And kids who don’t connect to their inner nature through creative play won’t be as resilient as generations before them.
watch, and a grand prize of an all- expense paid trip by air for four to Toronto from anywhere in Canada plus accommodations and four front-row tickets to see the Jungle Book stage play.
BUY LESS PLASTIC
Plastic pollution and its threat to nature and human health is a pressing concern. Reducing consumption is a first step! Buying things and acquiring wealth does not make us happy. Rather, connecting to others and our natural environment is the key to happiness – the mindset of sustainability! Throughout April – Earth Month – Earth Day Canada is inviting everyone to #EarthPLAY and #ConsumeLess for #Earth Day2018! CAMPAIGNS
Through crowdfunding, Earth Day Canada hopes to raise $25,000 for EarthPLAY programs. The goal for 2018 is to support everyday outdoor play for 20,000 kids. Earth Day Canada aims to bring enriched play opportunities into schools, parks, streets and community green spaces. Prizes include Springfree trampolines, Patagonia bags, a Meadow
EARTH DAY IN SCHOOLS
The EarthPLAY program for schools is called Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL) and is focused on making sure we allot the time, space and materials needed for enriched outdoor play during recess, lunch and after-school hours. This year, schools across Canada are invited to EarthPLAY for Earth Day – either with an extra or extended recess, or by hosting a full day of Adventure Play. An Earth Day for Schools page includes a free toolkit for schools to help guide them through this process. Participating schools are invited to send a photo or video and testimonial of their EarthPLAY event to the Sony EarthPLAY for Earth Day Contest for a chance to win one of 10 Sony Action Cameras.

ADVICE | GARDENING
THREE HACKS TO MAKE THE MOST OUT OF
YOUR BALCONY CARSON ARTHUR
THINK VERTICALLY!
It always surprises me how often outdoor walls are overlooked. Vertical walls in a small outdoor space or a balcony are the perfect spot to add character without cluttering the rest of the area. Make the most of yours with vertical gardens or outdoor art. Another great trick is installing a hinged wall-mounted table that gives you extra serving space when needed, or folds away to make room for more seating. 12 RentersGuide.ca
GET GROWING
Who says you can’t garden on a patio? Get beyond terracotta pots with this year’s must-have: the raised planter bed. The key is choosing a custom design that makes sense for your space. With DIY here to stay, companies have gotten really good at helping novice builders get started. MicroPro Sienna wood is a fantastic choice for a raised bed because it looks great and is affordable. Best of all, it has set new environmental benchmarks, so it won’t leach toxins into soil.
favourite unused space is under benches. Built-in seating on balconies is a great way to add storage for toys, tools and other outdoor goodies. Not to mention the space under that custom planter! It’s perfect for keeping extra blankets and pillows on hand. Summer is short: take control of your outdoor space this year, start planning early and get the most out of it. Warmer weather is on its way so it’s time to start thinking about your outdoor space. Nothing says relaxation like fresh evening air and a cold drink in your hand. With summer around the corner, it’s the perfect way to wrap up a long day at the office, or better yet, an even longer day at the beach. But when you’re limited by space, relaxation can easily turn to frustration if you haven’t got the right setup. I call it ‘patio envy’. Luckily, we’ve seen a resurgence of landscaping driven by the millennial generation that favours urban spaces. So, it comes as no surprise that we’re seeing trends that are scalable to any outdoor space, no matter its size. Here are my top three hacks to make the most of your balcony this year:

The key to transforming your home into a place that functions well, lies in adhering to a vision of what you want your space to be and changing your habits in order to fully realize that vision.
BEGIN, THE REST IS EASY
Don’t be deterred by the quantity of stuff you’ve accumulated. Make four piles: Things you need and use and want to keep; things you want to donate; things you want to throw away; and things you are holding onto for sentimental reasons. Learn to separate your emotional attachment to the objects you’re saving and you’ll be able to let go of things more easily.
day. Improve apartment closets with hanging canvas shoe and accessory bags for shirts, sweaters and other items. Fashioning your space is a constant process that must be tackled and periodically re-tackled, closet by closet, drawer by drawer, room by room. But once you see the sense of tranquility and harmony that is achievable, you’ll never look back.

On Tuesday April 17 you’ll find volunteers for the 19th Annual Spring H.O.P.E. Food Drive showing up at your door between 6:30 and 9 p.m. They’re there to collect donations that will go a long way in restocking the shelves at your local food banks. This is your opportunity to make a difference and help a neighbour in need. H.O.P.E. stands for Housing Owners and People Everywhere, a real sense of a community looking after each other. The Food Banks shelves could use some restocking and Apartment Associations across the province, in conjunction with landlords and property management companies, are making it easy for you to pitch in by collecting donations in support. If that time isn’t convenient for you, you can leave your donation outside of your door; you can bring your donation down to your super or site office in advance; you can even make an online donation at any time that’s convenient for you: springhopefooddrive.ca The lovely thing about Spring H.O.P.E. is that all the food collected stays within the community – residents should feel good that they’ll be supporting neighbours. Hunger can affect anyone – it doesn’t discriminate by age, background or neighbourhood. According to Gail Nyberg, executive director of the Daily Bread Food Bank, this food drive is one of the most important because of its timing. “It’s a time of year when the shelves are depleting,” she says. “The infusion of food restocks our shelves.” The most needed items are the staples: rice, peanut butter, tins of fish, lentils, cereal – anything with good, substantial nutritious value. There is also always a great need for baby food and products. Do what you can, even if it’s just a single item sitting at the back of your shelf that you know you can spare. And if your building isn’t participating, you can still make a donation directly to your local food bank. Visit springhopefooddrive.ca for details, or your local food bank for more information on the food drive, how to get involved and what products are most in demand.

ADVICE | MOVING
FIVE WAYS TO MAKE MOVING A CLEANER, GREENER PROCESS
CHUCK RESNICK We need to think of the environment with every activity — even moving day can be cleaner and greener, and it doesn’t take much effort. Waste caused by the moving process not only stems from packing supplies, but also from the waste accumulated over many years within a home. Both can be extremely taxing on the environment if not properly managed. Here are some suggestions on how to make your move a cleaner, greener process: 1 PLAN AHEAD. Waiting until the
last minute to prepare for a move will make any environmental concerns an afterthought. Start early so you have the extra time to sort through recyclable items – in your apartment and in storage – for delivery to recycling depots prior to moving day. Typically your storage contains the highest concentration of recyclable waste, so start the sorting process there first. Consider holding a garage sale or donating gently used but no longer wanted items to a charity rather than have them end up in a landfill site. 2 RESEARCH. Survey local
recycling options to find the most convenient solution for recyclables. Many cities offer curbside pick-up or “sort and 24 RentersGuide.ca
drop” depots. Visit earth911.com for a list of local organizations that can dispose of all types of recyclable materials. 3 ORGANIZE. Prepare recyclables
by organizing into categories: plastic, glass, aluminum, paper, cardboard, etc. Look up the requirements of the local recycler to see if there are any additional steps needed to prepare recyclables beforehand. 4 CARE FOR HAZARDOUS MATERIAL. As you clean in
preparation to move, be conscientious about the kinds of materials being packed to move with you and which items are to be disposed. Toxic items, such as paint, batteries, house cleaning products, automobile oils, pesticides and fertilizers are dangerous and cannot be transported in the back of a commercial moving truck. Also consider these items cannot be thrown out with your regular garbage. Look up the specialized
recycling depots for toxic products in your city. 5 REUSE. Do not throw away
used moving boxes when the move is complete. A well-made corrugated box is great for storage or may be reused for a future move or passed on to someone else who is moving. Contact local schools or charity organizations, such as women’s shelters, scout troops and food banks to ask if they need boxes to redistribute donated items. Donating gently used boxes not only reduces waste, but can be a big help in support of a good cause.

JENNIFER BRAUN This is what your home decor is saying about you: STILL LOOKS LIKE MOVE-IN DAY
Decorating a rental might feel impossible, but leaving your apartment bare gives off the impression that you’re lazy and uninventive. Stop being afraid of taking a few risks and start adding some personality to your home. MIX AND MATCH EVERYTHING
You have eclectic taste. Your home style is a mix of second-hand furniture from your parents’ home,
a combination of bad house warming gifts and items you refuse to live without. You just can’t say no to the things you love. We know you’re all about functionality and living by your own rules. I REALLY REALLY LOVE MY HOBBIES
It doesn’t matter if you’re a sports fanatic or a movie enthusiast, your love for whatever hobby you choose is self-evident at first home glance. You put the time into the things you care about. MODERN MINIMALIST
If your home has a modern and minimalist style, you like to be on trend without taking big risks. You are low maintenance just like your home style.
MY LIFE IS A MESS, I’LL JUST LEAVE THIS HERE
You are constantly on the go. Somehow your kitchen table has been turned into your home office and your living room is now a leftover snacking ground. Your home is just a reflection of this current life period. You’ll come around after this work rush and piece your home decor style back together. PLA N T PERFE CT IO N Floral designer Natalie Trivett, owner of Crowning Glory Decor, shares her top six house plants to help greenify your indoor space. Plants and greenery seem to be everywhere these days. From living plant walls displayed in restaurants to tropical leaf print wallpaper and pillows in decor shops, plants are the new go-to design accessory. Wouldn’t you agree there is something so organic and soothing about incorporating natural elements into our living spaces? But, many struggle with cultivating their green thumb and worry about mass plant casualties. Can you relate? The key could be as simple as choosing the right plant for your lifestyle needs. Here are my top six low-maintenance yet wow-looking plants that your home will love.
RUBBER PLANT (FICUS ELASTICA) Details: Known for its beautiful, large, deep green leaves, it can grow to be quite large and act as a real focal point in any space. Care: Needs bright light but prefers indirect light that isn’t too hot. Placing it near a window that has sheer curtains is ideal. Soil needs to be kept moist. Once soil gets dry, definitely water it. Periodically wipe the leaves of your rubber tree houseplant with a damp cloth or spritz it with water. Leaves turning yellow or brown? Then you need to reduce the amount of water to avoid overwatering. Buy: homedepot.ca

SNAKE P L AN T
(sansevieria trifasciata) 26 RentersGuide.ca
SPLIT LEAF PHILODEND R ON
(monstera deliciosa)
FID DLE LEAF FIG (ficus lyrata)
FIDDLE LEAF FIG (FICUS LYRATA) Details: This plant is definitely trending. The bright green leaves and neat pruning techniques make this plant highly sought after and photogenic. Care: Needs bright indirect light. Water your fig tree when only the top inch of soil is dry. It’s helpful to fertilize once a month during growing seasons (not during the winter). Periodically wipe the leaves with a damp cloth (some suggest using an oil, such as coconut, to maintain a shine on the leaves). Buy: Specialty and boutique flower shops, such as willemandjools.com or coriandergirl.com SNAKE PLANT (SANSEVIERIA TRIFASCIATA) Details: With its two-toned markings, interesting leaf proportion and durability, the snake plant is a great option for anyone who wants a great look without much effort. Care: Needs indirect sunlight and not much water, especially during the winter. It’s best to let these plants dry out between watering. Fertilize once in a while. Very low maintenance and sort of indestructible! Buy: ecostems.ca
SPLIT LEAF PHILODENDRON (MONSTERA DELICIOSA) Details: The large, stunning split leaves make this plant desirable and iconic! Care: Needs indirect lighting (it’s best within five to eight feet of a window). Keep the soil moist and water every seven to 10 days. This plant does not like to be moved around, so let it grow and flourish in one area of your home. Buy: dynastytoronto.com CACTI PLANT (CACTACEAE) Details: With some 1,750 known species, these unique-looking plants are user friendly and high on style for any space. Care: Cacti are ideal in direct sunlight; south facing light is preferable. Water well when soil gets dry during spring and summer months, water less during winter months. Buy: cactuskingdom.ca SUCCULENTS Details: Succulents have been trending for the last couple of years and continue to be an easy way to inject some greenery into a space. Care: Just like cacti, succulents are ideal in direct sunlight. Water well when soil gets dry during spring and summer months, water less during winter months. They should be given just enough water so that they show no sign of shriveling (be careful of over-watering!). Buy: westelm.ca

ADVICE | RENTERS’ HELP
CHILDPROOFING CHALLENGES by KIM CARLTON Having a baby is an exciting, but a nerve-wracking experience. Here are some strategies to help you keep your home safe and sound. • Make sure your electrical outlets are covered. There are many kinds of outlet covers – choose the one that is right for you. • Confirm that you have reliable smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Make sure that the batteries are working. • Use doorknob covers on doors to non-childproofed areas (like the bathrooms and laundry room). Baby gates are also an effective solution for keeping kids in or out of a room. • Don’t use toys or pillows in the
crib, especially with young babies - your baby could suffocate. Never use an electric blanket for a child (could cause a fire). • Never leave a child unattended in the bathtub. Drowning can occur in seconds, and mere inches of water pose a risk. • Make sure your bathtub has a non-skid mat or pads to avoid slips. You can use a baby tub inside the bathtub - one with baby slings are especially helpful with infants. • Lock up all medications, alcoholic beverages, chemicals and cleaning products. Make sure matches and lighters are out of reach. Use cabinet locks
to secure these items. • Make sure cords for blinds are not tied together at the bottom (this is a strangulation hazard). • Make sure knives and sharp items are in an area where kids can’t access them. • Check toys for broken parts/ bits that are a choking hazard or sharp. Keep small toys for older children (like figurines, game board pieces and small building blocks) away from your baby.

ADVICE | MONEY MATTERS
YOU’RE HAVING A BABY! GAIL VAZ-OXLADE
One of the life events that will have the biggest impact on your money is the arrival of a new babe and the income loss associated with taking maternity leave. In Canada, new moms can take up to 52 weeks off from their jobs and have those jobs protected for their return to work. However, all that time off doesn’t necessarily come with a full paycheque. Yes, there are companies that offer a ‘top up’, but it hardly ever is for the full amount of your before-baby pay, and it seldom lasts for the full year. For people who do not receive a top-up, employment insurance (EI) benefits will provide an income. EI benefits are calculated as 55 per cent of your normal earnings up to a maximum salary. So if you’re earning $40,000 a year, which translates into $3,333 before taxes a month, or $769 gross a week, you’ll be entitled to 55 per cent of that or about $423 a week, before taxes. Ouch! On top of that, the first two weeks of mat leave are unpaid, so your income calculation won’t start until the third week. And since it’ll take between four to six weeks to get your first EI benefit deposited into your bank account, don’t count on that money to make your mortgage payment or buy food. Moms aren’t the only ones who can take time off with your new Mini-Me. Dads can take up to 35 weeks of parental leave; however EI benefits have to be shared between the mother and father so they can’t both collect EI at the same time. 32 RentersGuide.ca
Adoptive parents also get to take parental benefits and fall under the same rules as dads. So how are you going to cope? Many new moms and dads resort to using their credit cards or lines of credit to see them through. Dumb! With a new longterm expense – that’s the baby – adding gobs of interest to the equation is no way to secure your financial future. Just because Canadians are guaranteed a year of mat leave doesn’t mean we should take it. We should do it if we’ve taken the time to plan for it, and have the money we’ll need to make ends meet without going into debt. The best way to see the implication of the mat leave income drop-off is to live on the equivalent of your mat leave income for the duration of your pregnancy. Put the rest of the money you’re earning away for emergencies, to buy the stuff you’ll need for the baby, or to start an education savings plan. If you can’t swing it for the months that you’re pregnant, you might want to reconsider taking the full year’s mat leave. The other thing you have to consider is which member of the family should take the most time with the baby. While traditionally, women have done this, when the woman is the primary breadwinner in the family then the income loss to the family is felt doubly. Do the math to see who should take time off and how much, and how that will impact on the family’s financial situation. You have to make a budget that balances while you’re off, including a whole bunch of new categories that incorporate baby’s food, clothes, personal care (diapers,
shampoo, cream), medical, toys, activities, and savings. The arrival of your newest family member should be a time filled with joy and excitement. But you can’t expect things to run smoothly if you’re a dope and don’t do some planning. People like to say they didn’t have any time to plan… that they were “surprised” by baby’s arrival. You’re kidding me, right? Nine (I actually think of it as 10) months isn’t enough time to figure out how you’re going to cope? Or maybe it’s that you don’t want to have to face some hard truths. Well, you have a baby to consider now, so it’s time to wake up and smell the poop!
