EDITOR’S NOTE
SPRING IS A GOOD TIME TO WALK THE NEIGHBOURHOODS Spring! It’s finally here. No matter that it’s still chilly outside. The days are brighter and longer, and will soon warm up, making it perfect for walking through different neighbourhoods to see where you’d like to live. This is probably one of the best ways to find a rental that suits your needs and lifestyle. Yes, budget is important, but so is feeling comfortable in the neighbourhood you choose. Walking through a variety of areas allows you to compare the housing and amenities, broadening your choices. Are there a lot of apartment buildings, condos or houses? Are they older construction or newly built? This will give you an idea of how rentable the area is, as well as an approximate idea of price. What about amenities? If you like to cook, you may want a few food shops nearby, and if you don’t cook very much, then a restaurant-dense neighbourhood may be more your style. If you have a dog, an area with some parks may suit you and if you commute to work, being close to public transit is a must. You can also check out the neighbourhood profiles in each issue of Renters Guide. They give you a snapshot of the neighbourhood, including hot spots, location and area amenities so you can narrow down your search. In this issue, we profile Sherwood (pg. 14). So enjoy renting, and when it’s time to make a move, let Renters Guide help. You can also check us out at NextHome.ca and get ready to find your new next home!

DIY DESSERT STAND Editor Sara Duck shows you how to make a customized three-tiered dessert stand. The best part? It dismantles easily for quick storage!
YOU WILL NEED THE FOLLOWING MATERIALS AND TOOLS BEFORE YOU START: • Three plates (small, medium and large) in your style of choice • Handle hardware. I sourced mine from Ebay • Safety glasses *because accidents can happen, it’s best to be safe! • Power drill
• 1/4-inch ceramic drill bit • 1/4-inch diamond drill bit • Sharpie marker • Ruler • Gorilla or Duct tape • Piece of wood
STEP ONE: On the front of the plate, find the centre by using a ruler to measure and mark a dot. STEP TWO: Turn the plate over and put a piece of reinforced tape like Gorilla or Duct tape in the centre, on the back of the plate. Smooth out any air bubbles. The tape helps to keep the plate from splintering once the drilling starts. STEP THREE: Turn the plate face up. Place a piece of wood under the plate to avoid damaging your tabletop. Put safety glasses on! Drill a pilot hole using the 1/4-inch ceramic drill bit in the centre marking. Use a good amount of pressure while drilling this pilot hole, so the drill bit doesn’t slip. A pilot hole does not go all the way through the plate. Make a strong indent without going all the way through; this will help the next drill bit grip easily to the plate.
STEP FOUR: Sprinkle a little water on the plate (to avoid burning out your drill), attach the 1/4-inch diamond grit drill bit and drill hole all the way through the plate. Depending on the quality of the plate, this could take 15 seconds or a few minutes. Be patient, don’t rush this process. STEP FIVE: Once the holes are drilled, assemble the plates using hardware.

SHERWOOD A SCENIC, FAMILY-FRIENDLY NEIGHBOURHOOD
+MORE PHOTOS AND STATS ONLINE: nexthome.ca/hamilton-sherwood
TAYLOR STINSON Sherwood is a scenic neighbourhood with a familyfriendly vibe. Bound by Upper Gage Avenue, Mohawk Road E. and the curved Mountain Brow Boulevard, Sherwood is a neighbourhood in the upper east end of Hamilton with scenic views and charming homes with large front yards. Homes here are many small bungalows and detached family homes located in mature subdivisions on tree-lined streets. The area is purely residential—here is the place to be if you want some peace and quiet.
There may be middleclass families living in this neighbourhood in detached and single-family bungalows, but there are some townhomes and apartments adjacent to the major streets. Since the area is so residential, it is also quiet and calm, with neighbours who respect each other’s space. Since the area is so residential, the main hotspots in this neighbourhood stray from your typical local eateries and pubs, and tend to be mainly park and school spaces, along with recreational facilities, like the arena and indoor pool. There are also many green spaces and parks. Though the neighbourhood is set back a bit from the downtown area, transit on the east mountain

is still decent, with buses coming every 15 to 20 minutes. Of course, having a car here is essential when it comes to running errands and commuting back and forth from work on a daily basis. While you can’t get very far without a car, a walk around the neighbourhood is relaxed and calming. If you value privacy and quietness in a community, considerate neighbours, and plenty of park space, then Sherwood is the place to call home.

ADVICE | APARTMENTALITY
NEED A LITTLE LUCK TO FIND THAT PERFECT HOME? Want to live at lucky number seven? Would you ever live on the 13th floor? How superstitious are you, and how much would it affect your next apartment? UNLUCKY 4: Tetraphobia. In Chinese it sounds like the word for death so four, and any number with a digit of four, is to be avoided: 40, 444, 441. Numerous buildings exclude the fourth floor and some even a room number four. LUCKY 7: Whether it’s the number of days it took the divine to create the world or the fact that seven is a number that repeats itself in many obvious ways – seven seas, seven colours in the rainbow’s spectrum, seven notes on the scale – it’s everyone’s lucky number . LUCKY 8: An auspicious number in Chinese culture, eight is
considered to be the luckiest number. UNLUCKY 9: In Japanese, nine sounds like the word for torture or suffering and is to be avoided. UNLUCKY 13: Triskaidekaphobia or the fear of the number 13 has long been a superstition. Whether it stems from The Last Supper in the Christian faith or from Viking lore, we’ll never know – but it’s among the most famous superstitions, enough so that most buildings don’t offer a 13th floor. UNLUCKY 17: In Italy, 17 is not a welcome number. The Roman numeral for 17 – XVII – is an anagram for VIXI – a term implying you’re dead, similar to the term RIP (Rest In Peace). You don’t want your address denoting you’re dead.
LUCKY 18: In Hebrew, the same
digits are used for letters and numbers, so every word can be read as a number. The digits for 18 are read as the word “life” which is invested with a belief of luck, especially luck to live a long life. EVIL 666: From the book of Revelations, John The Apostle’s reference to ‘The number of the beast’ (chapter 13) is associated with Hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia. However, in Chinese culture, the pronunciation of 666 sounds like “things going smoothly” so the number is favourable. There are other superstitions and signs of luck in real estate, so may luck be with you finding that new apartment!

ADVICE | THE RENTALIST
THE BEST NON-RENO RENOS FOR
YOUR RENTAL UNIT JACKIE MARCHILDON As a renter, you’ve likely had a moment or two when you wished you could make a big change to your rental unit — the countertops, the flooring — or, on a bad day, everything. But you also know you can’t make drastic changes, and you probably don’t really want to invest that much time and money into it anyway. Luckily, there are a number of options for renters that can help make big changes without the headache (and illegality) of renovating a rental. USE CONTACT PAPER
Generic countertops are a staple in rental units but they are easy to change without renovations. Contact paper comes in all kinds of colours and designs and applying it can make a huge difference in the kitchen. You can

ISLAND
Most of the time we think we need to add things to make a big difference, but that’s not always true. If you remove the doors of your kitchen cupboards, for example, you create a bright, open-concept look. For an even richer effect, you can paint the insides of the cupboards or use contact paper to liven it all up.
In the spirit of creating more space (and keeping you sane if you feel like you’re always doing dishes), buy a portable dishwasher. Not only will it save you hours of dishwashing time, it’ll give you more counterspace! If you already have a dishwasher, and simply crave more counters, buy an island — it works as storage, a counter and a table.
CHANGE LIGHT FIXTURES AND SWITCHES
ADD SMART STORAGE
Replacing boring light fixtures with new distinctive ones like chandeliers or pendant lamps can really alter the look of your unit. If your home feels dark, this helps in the obvious way of brightening the space up, but it also helps a rental feel more unique. Check with your landlord before you play with anything electrical and you need to hire a professional. You can also change your light switch plates. Replace the dull plastic ones with something fancy like gold or brightly coloured plates to create little pops of colour throughout your home.
If you wish you could build more closets in your house (or build a garage), find unique ways to store stuff. Ceiling hooks are a great way to hang big items like bikes, and shelves can double as storage and decor. CHANGE THE HARDWARE
A new showerhead can make a huge difference in the bathroom. If you buy the right one, it’ll make you feel like you’ve renovated your shower and it’ll look nice and shiny. While you’re at it, see if you can change up your faucets and little drawer knobs, too. These little changes yield big results.
PAINT AND HANG MIRRORS
Painting can be a pain, but it can have dramatic effects on a space. To mimic the look of a chair rail, paint two-tone walls — use a dark colour in the upper area and a lighter one in the lower section. If your wish is for spaciousness, paint a light colour and hang mirrors. Incorporating mirrors into your decor helps lighten up a space and

ADVICE | MOVING
MOVING TO YOUR FIRST APARTMENT REQUIRES
SMART ORGANIZATION AND PLANNING CHUCK RESNICK For many university or college students, moving out for the first time can be a stressful change, and the transition to college or university on top of that can make it a very overwhelming experience. However, taking a few painless steps can make the move to the new “home-away-from-home” go more smoothly. It’s easy to get frustrated when faced with packing and condensing belongings that will ultimately have to fit in a small room in a space often shared by one, two, three or more people. So here are some tips for parents and students to make the process easier.
belongings. Items can get tossed around during the move and if loose items fall out, people can get hurt. Also, beware of using grocery store boxes – they stored food and can carry bugs.
START EARLY
Don’t wait until the last minute to collect boxes and moving supplies. Start packing non-essential items immediately, such as seasonal clothing. Clearly label all boxes so unpacking is made easier.
PACK SIMILAR ITEMS TOGETHER
TRY TO CONDENSE
Remember, the heavier the item, the smaller the box.
Label the boxes so they are easily identified. This will help the student prioritize unpacking without making a huge mess.
RECYCLE
Buying reusable supplies such as high-quality containers is good for parents’ wallets and for the environment. Most corrugated cardboard boxes can be easily folded and stored during the school year. Plastic storage bins with lids are also a good option. The containers parents buy this year can be reused and recycled throughout the student’s university career.
DON’T OVER-PACK BOXES
Go through the new student’s belongings before packing. Reduce the amount of items to move to start the school year clutter-free. USE THE RIGHT SUPPLIES
Shop around for competitive prices on supplies. Avoid using old shopping bags, laundry baskets or topless boxes to transport 22 RentersGuide.ca
USE ORIGINAL PACKAGING FOR LARGE ELECTRONICS
The safest way to transport electronics such as a computer, TV, mini-fridge or a microwave is to use the original packaging. If it’s not available, wrap the electronics in anti-static bubble wrap.

“Metals can inspire creativity or simply be the finishing touches to your space. This year, I’ve been falling in love all over again with brass. If you’re reading this and starting to envision the shiny, yellow brassy gold of decades past, put those thoughts out of your head. The brass of today is modern, less formal than gold and can add a pop of shine to any space in your home. When designing spaces for my clients, I find I’m drawn to brass for bathroom fittings, lighting, cabinet hardware and accessories. Everywhere you look you see the warm glow of metals, so don’t shy away. Become inspired and embrace brass again in 2018!”

ADVICE | QUICK TIPS
ORGANIZE ON A BUDGET COST-EFFECTIVE TIPS TO CUT YOUR CLUTTER
HELLEN BUTTIGIEG Prices keep going up and up, so if you’re trying to cut costs, why not cut clutter at the same time? You don’t need to spend your hard-earned money on expensive storage solutions – chances are, you may already have the thrifty answers in your home! USE WHAT YOU HAVE. Organizing
doesn’t have to cost a fortune; just get creative. Before rushing out to buy bins and baskets, look around your home for containers you can re-purpose. Here are some ideas: » Egg cartons or ice-cube trays can be used to organize earring sets, cufflinks or hair accessories. » Empty plastic baby-wipe containers can be used to store crayons, first aid or sewing supplies, and they stack easily on a shelf. » Empty baby food jars can be used to keep touch-up paint, spare buttons, or screws and nails. » A mug holder can be repurposed into a scarf or baseball cap holder. » Empty tissue boxes can hold plastic grocery bags or, with the top cut off, packets of gravy and instant soup. BEFORE YOU GO SHOPPING,
less because you know what you already have, you can buy clothes that co-ordinate with existing items, and you’ll be able to get dressed faster because there will be fewer decisions to make. CORRAL COIN CLUTTER. Do you have loose change in every part of your home? Grab a clear jar and label it Fun Funds. Now you have a designated place to deposit those coins, both reducing clutter and creating a little nest egg. Once the jar is full, treat yourself to a small indulgence and then start again.
ELIMINATE THE CLOTHES YOU DON’T WEAR TO MAKE ROOM
REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF PAPER

paper out of your printer and store it in a file folder across the room.
Although this may seem counterproductive, you will actually be saving time in the long run. By making it less convenient to print, you will begin to print more consciously and less often. As a result, you’ll have fewer papers to pile, sort through and file later, and you’ll spend less money on print cartridges and paper. ADVICE | SMART SPACES
CREATING A SPACE IN YOUR HOME FOR YOUR HOME BUSINESS
KATHRYN KUSYSZYN You’re taking the plunge into entrepreneurship. Now you need to make myriad decisions, starting with where in your home to set up your workspace. The right space can make all the difference to the success of your venture. Here are some considerations for effectiveness and productivity. First off is the actual location. How much space is required and the type of space available will dictate where to set up shop. Depending on your space, a den, spare bedroom or mudroom can easily suit this purpose. Claiming part of a basement could work as well. When a full room isn’t available, consider converting a large foyer or the space under a staircase. Enclosing a porch or a balcony may do the trick. At the very least – and if it’s all your apartment can handle, designate a corner of one room as a work-only space. Ensure everyone knows this is a work-only area and off limits. A physical demarcation will assist with organization as well as support clear boundaries. Make a list of the needs and desires for the type of work you’re going to perform. You may prefer a space that offers such features as privacy, quiet, optimal ventilation, natural light, bright colours, artwork and an inspiring view. Choose the elements that are crucial for you to be at your best. Fulfill the needs first; the majority of desires will follow. 28 RentersGuide.ca
Let’s assume you need a desk, a phone and a computer. These require power, an Internet connection and lighting. Note the outlets and electricity available. Ensure there is enough power to handle a space heater or fan, computer, printer, desk lighting and whatever else you need all at once. Beware of tripping hazards like extension cords and power bars. If you will be seeing clients or colleagues in your space, there are other considerations. Check the local bylaws regarding signage and parking. The front walk will need to be well maintained with snow and ice removed when necessary. Clear entryways and preferably a direct route to the workspace rather than
through the living space are ideal. Ask friends and colleagues for their impressions and how you can make it more welcoming. Just as important is the mental space. Entering a workspace that meets your needs and is designated as such allows the mind to focus. When it’s both functional and pleasurable to be in, your work will flow.
