Smaller households demand smaller homes Canadian households are shrinking according to Statistics Canada data. Seven decades ago, the average household consisted of 4.3 people; by 2011, the average size had dropped to 2.5 people per household, albeit, there’s plenty more of us to house. While the majority of Canadian homes over the last century were built to support larger families comprised of two parents with children, nowadays one or two people make up the majority of households, which is why apartment and condominium living – in urban areas in particular – have become increasingly popular.
The impact of smaller families on the Canadian housing market has been significant, spurring a dramatic change in the types of homes and apartments being constructed. The introduction of urban townhomes, bachelor apartments, studio lofts and condominiums of all shapes and sizes is effectively servicing smaller families and singles who need homes and nearby amenities. While larger homes are still a need for some, the next time you see another crane in the air keep this new demographic dynamic in mind.

KNOWN AS “The heart of St. Catharines,” the former town of Merritton is now one of the most happening neighbourhoods in the city. Home to both the Pen Centre (Niagara’s largest mall) and Brock University, this east side community stretches from Highway 406 to the Welland Canal, and from Lincoln Avenue/Queenston Street to St. David’s Road/Townline. The preservation of greenspace in key areas, such as along the old Welland canals, make this a walker’s paradise. It’s an active area, home to the Centennial Arena and Lion’s Park, and even has its own Merritton
Athletic Association, founded in 1946. Merritton still retains its working class traditions, despite the fact that residents are now likely to commute to an office job in the city. Merritton prides itself on being an important contributor to city life. From its early days as an industrial manufacturing hub to its more recent transformation into an entertainment, dining and shopping mecca, the neighbourhood has seen many improvements in recent years. New developments are re-energizing this friendly smalltown neighbourhood, and gradually creating a more upscale urban environment.

IF YOU’RE SHARING A space with someone else, unless you’re both on completely different schedules, they’re going to become a pretty big part of your life. Girlfriends and boyfriends come and go, but especially in a big city, roommates can be with each other for years – even decades if the lease is good enough. If you’ve been “set up” by friends, it’s easy to find out about the other person’s habits and foibles before you let them sign the lease. But how can you ensure that cool-seeming stranger who answered your ad won’t become your new worst enemy once the lease is signed? I just happen to be a professional matchmaker, and the similarities that run between a love match and a roomie match are astounding, so I’m going to offer my professional matchmaking advice on finding that perfect roommate. These five topics can guide your roommate compatability testing – and are ideal to cover before you go making any yearlong commitments. 1. Are you lark, or an owl? If you’ve barely hit the sack at 3am after a Walking Dead marathon and your
roomie rises at 4:45am for an early morning run, it’s never going to work unless you’ve got an extremely soundproof kitchen and bathroom. Better to find someone who keeps similar hours. 2. How do you play the social game? How’s your social life? A single introvert may not pair up very well with somebody who hosts a party every month and has friends “drop by” at random. Make sure you ask before the first spontaneous afterwork session occurs in your living room. 3. Where aer your boundaries? Can I borrow your boots? Do you mind if I use some of this soy sauce? Some people are extremely comfortable with sharing not only a space, but also the items within it. I once had a roommate who – after I’d told her she could wear a particular skirt – took to dressing herself daily from my wardrobe, never bothering to ask permission. Boundaries around everything from the food in the kitchen to the contents of your closet need to be clearly delineated.

4. Who’s a bathroom hog? How much longer will you be in there? When two people share a lone bathroom, shower length, makeup application time and the duration of your depilation sessions all become a matter of some urgency. Talk to your potential cohabitant about their personal habits, especially if you both leave for work around the same time. 5. Housekeeping expectations? When was the last time you cleaned your bathtub? If your answer is “this morning, right after my shower,” and your prospective roommate responds incredulously, “you clean your bathtub?” it’s not a match. Be upfront about housekeeping standards, or one of you might end up feeling like the other one’s mom.

Then I realized the hard part was actually putting the furniture together. Who knew putting together a bed frame could actually take an entire day. Then once you think it’s over, you end up with one leftover piece!

Whether it’s that time you accidently locked yourself out of your home or that week your landlord was on vacation and the building’s entire water supply was cut off. Fortunately, a fellow renter can always top your story no matter how bad you think it was and make you feel better.

When looking for the perfect gift for someone, it’s wise to consider whether they’re a renter, young professional, raising a family or an empty nester. To make holiday shopping a little easier, here’s a list of the top gifts to give for different life stages.
1. The Student Most students are renters and if you’re in need of a gift for someone who is renting, you’ll want to consider giving them items that will, at the very least, make them feel more at home.
