Parking can become a serious source of aggrivation. Yes, you think you’ve found the perfect place to call home, but have you found a home for your car (or cars) too? Sometimes apartments come with parking included. That’s a great value. If you’re a two-car family there’s often an additional fee, but factor that into the price of rent. Like rent, the price for parking is directly related to the property’s location. You’ll find parking charges in suburbs and small towns tend to be a lot less expensive than parking in big cities and high-density urban neighbourhoods.
Some apartments stipulate street parking only. This varies by municipality across the country. Some have bylaws prohibiting parking at certain times and days. Others simply require you to purchase a permit. Talk to other residents and see if a car-free family will rent their spot to you. But also consider– maybe you’re moving close enough to the places that you work and play that you can ditch the cars altogether. WHEN YOU HIRE A MOVING COMPANY, it is important to understand what services the firm can and cannot provide. At Two Men and a Truck – Canada, we pride ourselves on accommodating our clients in every possible way. But there are some requests that pose problems. MOVE HAZARDOUS MATERIALS, CONTAINERS OF FUEL AND GAS-POWERED ITEMS, SUCH AS LAWN MOWERS THAT ARE NOT EMPTIED OF FUEL: This is in accordance with Ontario’s Health and Safety Act and Hazard Materials Act. The law prohibits us from transporting these types of goods. MOVE LIVE PLANTS: Many movers, including our company, have their own guidelines about this. Securing plants takes a level of special treatment that we are not prepared to offer. If customers need advice on how to move plants, we can help them find companies that are equipped to do so. In our experience, most customers move plants themselves. MOVING ANIMALS: Moving animals takes special care, and movers are not willing to take responsibility for pets during a move. You are best to arrange for them to be somewhere else on moving day, and then ease them into their new surroundings yourself. REARRANGE YOUR FURNITURE: Sometimes people ask us to rearrange their furniture at their destination, which adds to the time estimated for your move. We are happy to provide you with this service – for a fee – but it shouldn’t be assumed it is automatically included. MOVE PERSONAL VALUABLES: It makes sense that small valuables such as jewelry, stocks, bonds and cash are items you want to transport yourself. STOP THE CLOCK BECAUSE THERE IS A CHANGE ON YOUR END: We get paid from the time we leave
our facility until the time we return. If you change the parameters of your contract or something unexpected happens on your end to cause a delay, the move continues on as planned, but will likely extend longer than your estimate. MOVE ITEMS LARGER THAN WE HAVE THE ABILITY TO DO: When we see items that are too big and bulky for us to handle, we will let you know. Upright pianos, for example, are incredibly heavy and usually require heavy-duty dollies and a truck with a lift gate. We can definitely help you with any size of piano. Massive walls can also present challenges. We can help you find the right firm to move those specialty items, if required. PROVIDE INSURANCE COVERAGE FOR ITEMS OF EXTRAORDINARY VALUE: Ontario’s Conditions of Carriage requires movers to insure items at least 60 cents per pound. If our coverage does not include antiques or works of art, we can arrange it through our Insurer as long as these items are itemized upfront. Your tenants insurance policy may also have a rider for goods in transit. INSTALL MAJOR APPLIANCES: We are neither plumbers nor electricians. If you require installation of your major appliances, arrange to have those professionals help you during your moving week. LOAD PRE-PACKED BOXES AND ITEMS INTO A U-HAUL OR POD: We do not do “load only moves.” If someone else is driving the vehicle and the goods are not under our control, we can’t take responsibility for the condition of the goods at their final destination. All of the above help ensure that your possessions arrive at the other end in one piece, with the safety of you, your family and the movers in mind. And, that’s our job!

TFROM BLISTERING HOT TO FREEZING COLD — it always seems to happen overnight, doesn’t it? If your rental unit was too hot during the summer, you might now be worried it will be too cold during the winter. Though keep in mind – although the landlord doesn’t have a responsibility to provide you with air conditioning, they certainly do have a responsibility to keep you warm during Canada’s colder months – generally above 21 to 22°C. But still, there are times you’ll want to warm up, and with winter around the corner, it’s never too early to prep your home for the cold. We all complain about it, but winter can be really fun! It’s just no fun to come home to a cold space. Don’t worry — there are plenty of cost-effective ways to warm up a cold home that won’t violate your rental agreement (or make your life too difficult)! PUT DOWN DRAFT STOPPERS Draft stoppers (also known as door snakes) act as barriers between the indoors and the cold outdoors. They are cheap to buy and easy enough to make if you’re more of a DIYer (just stuff them and sew them). It’s a small effort to put in for great results — in drafty apartments, you wouldn’t believe how much freezing air is drifting in through the gap at the bottom of the front door.

Cellular shades are a good option too, as they let light in, but tend to keep the cold out. This will bring the warm air down and help keep the temperature in your home from plummeting. You might still need a little help staying warm, so invest in a good space heater — just check your lease to confirm you’re allowed to have small appliances like heaters – especially if you aren’t responsible for paying for utilities. GET CREATIVE I’ve lived in a few cold apartments, and I’ve found that it’s all about knowing the little tricks. Once you’ve insulted the windows, sealed the gaps around the house and added warmth wherever you can, all you need to do is throw on some slippers and get creative. Sleep with a hot water bottle, microwave your socks, warm your towel on the radiator and leave the oven door open for a little while after you’ve cooked a meal or two!
COVER YOUR WINDOWS WITH INSULATION FILM Insulation film is basically Saran wrap for your windows — and it works wonders! I personally use it to cover most of my windows in the winter, and the difference in temperature can be felt immediately. As you’re placing it around the window, you’ll be able to see how strong the air coming in really is, because the draft will create a bubble beneath the wrap. Choose wisely when deciding which windows to cover because you will not be able to open them once they are insulated. COVER COLD SURFACES Put down a rug or two on your cold floors. If your ceramic tile is freezing during the winter, a nice rug to warm the feet can do a lot. Hardwood floors also
