love my car, but sometimes I wonder if the convenience is really worth it.
If I didn’t own a vehicle, I’d save hundreds of dollars every month, not to mention get some much needed exercise by walking more than I currently do, while reducing my carbon footprint. If you use public transportation as your way to get around, living in a transit friendly area becomes one of the most important things to consider when you’re looking for a new location. The other alternative is to live near a Zipcar or AutoShare location. These are car sharing clubs. All you need to join is a driver’s license and a clean driving record to enjoy the benefits. You can use a car for a few hours or a few days and then drop it right back off where you picked it up. It’s a great alternative to owning a car since gas and insurance are usually covered and you don’t ever have to get a car wash or an oil change. Many rental properties in Canadian cities have started to incorporate this service into their communities. When you’re out shopping around for a new place to call home, be sure to ask about transit and alternates like car clubs. Save money and be kind to the environment.

ou are a great tenant. Your pets – they’re good tenants too, right?
For some, Rover and Muffin are the fur family. Some treat pets like humans. Some take their pets everywhere they go. Designer carriers and toy pooch purses are a fashionable accessory. My mother crocheted little outfits for her dog to keep him warm. When I met my husband I found he always made his dog a hot meal for dinner. I get it, they’re family. But not everyone feels this way. In an apartment building, people have no way of avoiding your pets. It’s your responsibility to ensure your pet is the perfect tenant. While some provinces have legal provisions to allow or prohibit pets on the premises, the bottom line is that non-pet-owners should not be put out by neighbouring animals. Do your duty and poop ’n’ scoop. Nobody – and I mean nobody – likes to find it on the grounds. Often enough, a mindful neighbour will turn in dog owners that don’t pick up after their pooch. And no, the balcony is not a reasonable alternative to a walk. Do right by your dog – and your neighbours. The elevator and hallways are common areas. We all have to share them – but kitty shouldn’t be out wandering the halls. No pets should be out of the apartment alone, unsupervised. It’s dangerous to your pet to wander alone, and beyond that, other people may be allergic, or may have a phobia, or may not want a white cat rubbing along their black pant leg, leaving an unsightly fur trail. They chose not to have a pet, they shouldn’t have to deal with the drawbacks from yours. That goes for dogs jumping up on neighbours. It may be hard to restrain them on the elevator – and that may mean you need to wait for an empty elevator or take the stairs. Fish, ferrets, dogs, cats, hamsters, canaries and gerbils – there are so many little animals to love. Find the perfect home for you and yours – we’re here to help! The best way to ensure that situation is for all parties to communicate effectively. From the mover’s point-of-view, having a contract that is clear and agreed upon is the number-one way to achieve success. In Ontario, service agreements with moving companies come under the umbrella of Consumer and Corporate Affairs. When we provide you with a written quote in person, by law, we cannot charge you greater than 10 per cent over the amount stipulated in the contract – unless you change the conditions of the move. At Two Men and a Truck - Canada, we price by the hour, whatever it takes. If you call and ask to have 100 boxes moved, and we show up to find 200, of course we have to charge more than what we agreed upon. That is considered a change to the conditions of the move. Moving takes time, and there are many unexpected situations that might cause a delay and make your price go up. For example, the person who moves out of your apartment building before you may be running late, and the elevator is tied up longer than you planned. For the mover, the meter is running the entire time. Sometimes customers neglect to tell us that they are giving a large furniture item to a friend or relative and want us to drop it off on the way. This is a change to the conditions of the move and will cost more. The most common glitch is that the key to the new home isn’t available when it should be, and someone has to drive somewhere to get it. We bill RentersGuide.ca from dock to dock, so anything that increases the time also ups the price. When one of these unexpected happenings occurs, the mover will pull out a form called “Revision to Estimate” to explain the change, and everyone signs it.
