It’s not true. While some people enjoy owning thier own home, renters benefit from having no

maintenance, and someone to take care of emergency repairs – and pay those bills! Renters have lower expenses, an easier time relocating, and the ability to make minor changes or major moves without too much expense or commitment.

Cleaning Managing your busy schedule

WORK-LIFE BALANCE MAY SEEM to be a mythical concept, but having a balanced daily routine is actually possible – and an important notion to embrace. Still, between work, school, walking the dog and invaluable girl time - who has the hours to spend cleaning their apartment?

If you’re stuck somewhere between 10 hour working days and a pile of dirty dishes, here are five tips to help you get through it: THE RIGHT CLEANING SUPPLIES The right cleaning products – this does not mean you have to buy the latest and greatest Mr.Clean Magic All Purpose Grease, Poop and Make Children Disappear Spray. The right products are simply the ones that work best for your life. For me, a broom is much more effective at keeping the kitchen floor clean on the daily (I’m too lazy to pull out the vacuum cleaner every night); and I’m much more likely to pull out a Lysol Disinfecting Wipe than a bottle of disinfecting spray to wipe down the counter. Discover what works best for you and stick with it.

CLEAN A LITTLE EVERY DAY It might feel like you don’t have time, but if you do a quick five to 15 minute clean every day you’ll see how easy it is to keep your home clean. (Yes, you do have five minutes a day!) Focus on cleaning just one room every weeknight or doing one cleaning task like either dusting or passing the vacuum cleaner.

DON’T LET IT ACCUMULATE By cleaning a little everyday, you’re not letting your weekend cleaning list accumulate. Who wants to do three loads of laundry on the weekend? Instead, do one every day, and come Saturday there won’t be any. The same goes for dirty dishes. Don’t let them pile in your sink. Wash them or put them in the dishwasher right after each meal.

MULTITASK AWAY You’re in the bathroom anyway – put your multitasking skills to good use and pass a sponge around the sink or wipe down the mirror. If you’re watching TV, pick up items that are lying around the living room during commercial breaks. Small steps like these can leave your home ‘clean enough’ in a jiffy.

CHOOSE YOUR BATTLES Finally, living in a clean space is important and certainly gives me peace of mind, but having the shiniest toilet bowl is far from the most important thing in my life.

Choose your battles. A dirty sink can wait until tomorrow to be cleaned and a load of laundry can easily be hidden until the end of the day. A clean home doesn’t mean a perfect home.

This week, don’t let your cleaning tasks slip through the cracks and leave you forced to spend an entire weekend getting it done. Do what you can and you’ll soon see worklife balance is possible.

RENTAL INSURANCE - THE BASICS

LOOKING TO MAKE SOME EXTRA CASH? You may be considering renting out a room in your apartment, or perhaps even buying rental property. But what happens when your tenant causes damage to your property? Does your regular insurance policy cover tenants? Do you even need to tell your insurance broker about the student who moved into your space? Find out these answers before you get caught unprepared. You need to find the right insurance.

The first thing any insurance broker will tell you is: “Don’t lie!”

It may seem easier to fudge the truth in order to save a few bucks a month on insurance, but in the end, any form of misrepresentation on a policy (which is a legally binding document) can lead to the cancellation of that policy.

For example, you fill out forms for a rental property, and you state that your two-bedroom home will be rented out to a family of three. Then, there is a house fire,

and upon further inspection, the insurance company discovers you’ve actually been renting the house to 10 students. Bad news for you! The policy will most likely be cancelled and you’re left to foot the bill.

Some important things to consider before becoming a landlord: 1. Most policies do allow for “occasional renters” but it is important that you check with your broker for an exact definition.

You may think “occasional” is every weekend; whereas your broker thinks it’s only one weekend per month.

2. If you’re using a spare room in your apartment as a short-term rental (such as an Airbnb), many insurance companies consider this a business pursuit. You need a special policy for anything that fits under that category.

3. Make sure your tenant gets renter’s insurance. In fact, put it in your lease agreement. Your policy does not cover what is deemed “tenant vandalism.”

4. If it’s a rental property, you are responsible for visiting the property once a month. Turns out you haven’t been back in eight months and your tenants have turned the place into a grow op?

Too bad – your policy is cancelled.

5. Lastly, if you’re renting out a room in your condo, make sure to check with your condo board that this is allowed.

The most important thing to keep in mind when deciding to make some extra money by renting your space: be upfront with your broker.

Rental properties are often inspected before they are insured, so if you are caught lying on your initial form, then odds are you’ll be deemed uninsurable.
