With low vacancy rates now the norm across Canada, the rental market can be competitive, so it’s important to know what you want and be prepared before you start your search. Familiarize yourself with pricing and get your budget in order. You need to know what you can afford to spend on rent – and what your maximum comfort level really is. BEAUTIFULLY COSY AND HISTORICALLY significant, the
Hespeler Village area of Cambridge is bounded by Hespeler Road, Blackbridge Road, Townline Road and the Jamieson Parkway. Approximately equidistant to Kitchener/Waterloo, Guelph and greater Cambridge (Galt), it is an oasis of quaintness in the Golden Triangle. Not the sleepy town it appears to be, Hespeler Village is characterized by a civic-minded population with a real mix of values, from the traditional (churches abound) to the esoteric (massage therapists, acupuncturists and holistic nutritionists aplenty).
Children of all ages play in the streets, and it’s definitely more of a family atmosphere than a singles scene. This is a neighbourhood on the move, outdoors oriented and eagerly embracing change. This a community loves the outdoors and shows pride in the homes and gardens. Active professionals jog or cycle along the Speed River, and congregate on weekends and evenings in the bistros of the rapidly gentrifying main drag, Queen Street. With origins as a mill town, Hespeler Village is a healthy mix of working class and younger
professionals, some with families. While housing is affordable, and big box stores and outlet malls are less than a kilometre away, the Queen Street strip readies itself for an influx of new residents in the next few years, with a more upscale feel and price scale. Restaurants are slightly pricier than those along Hespeler Road, but considering the quality and diversity of the dishes, they’re still a bargain compared to bigger city prices.
Anne Marshall has lived in New York City, Glasgow (Scotland), Greensboro (NC), Toronto, and somehow ended up back in the fabulous small city of Guelph, where she grew up. She loves nothing more than exploring new areas, peering into other people’s apartments, houses and yards.

How to dodge the “rogue movers” who take your belongings hostage MOVING SEASON IS IN FULL SWING.
Families want to settle into new homes before the school year starts. Military personnel across the country are receiving new assignments. College and university students are moving into residences and apartments. Wherever you’re headed, beware of the “rogue movers” scam, which is a real threat! Typically, rogue movers will find victims through ads on popular classified postings websites, quote a low price, claiming “no surprise fees” or that “everything is included.” The fraudsters will deal with you by phone, insisting that a verbal contract is enough and that the paper copy can be signed on the day of the move. However, when they arrive at your doorstep, they present you with a very different contract, containing unexpected clauses and extra charges, such as warehousing and pickup fees. They pressure you to sign the contract or be left in the lurch. In some instances, the fraudsters will hold your possessions hostage until you pay what they want for their delivery. You’re left scrambling to find the money, hoping that you will get everything back in one piece. Moving is stressful enough without these unpleasant surprises. Follow these tips to make sure that your move goes off without a hitch. Seek certification: Some provinces require professional movers to have specific permits or registrations. This is a good starting point to find a legitimate company. Consult your provincial consumer protection agency for more information. Do your homework: Take the time necessary to research the company and consult multiple reviews. Contact your provincial consumer protection 24
agency or the Better Business Bureau to see if they have received complaints about the company. Get an estimate: Legitimate companies will send representatives to assess your needs, ensuring your quote is detailed and complete. This is an opportunity to inquire about any surcharges, insurances or additional fees and to ask questions. Get it in writing: Do not trust companies providing quotes or contracts over the phone. Get both in writing before the move and take the time to read the information carefully.
Ask questions if clauses are unclear and keep records of responses. Trust your instincts: If it looks too good to be true, it probably is. If you’ve been the victim of a rogue mover or other fraud, or if you have information about this type of scam, report it to the Canada Anti-Fraud Centre, the Competition Bureau or your local police. You can also file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau or your provincial consumer protection agency to help others who might consider hiring the same company.
