THE HERITAGE neighbourhood of Old North London is bounded by Windermere in the north and Oxford Street to the south. The Thames River and Adelaide Street mark its western and eastern borders. More stately and affluent than the trendy neighbouring areas to the south, Old North London is dominated by institutions, and backs onto the University of Western Ontario’s campus via the famous Richmond Gates. It’s quiet and scenic, a refined escape from all of the excitement offered downtown. Affluent families with children flock to Old North London. Married couples
without children at home are well represented, and many academics (both active and Emeritus) also call the area home. Given the abundance of high-density housing and proximity to campus, it’s also a very desirable location for students. The University of Western Ontario and its affiliate colleges offer a host of amenities that locals can access. Numerous parks add to the ambience of this very green neighbourhood. It can be a very pedestrian friendly area, but bigger houses mean bigger blocks, and a long walk to places like the supermarket in this heavily residential area, so most homeowners
find cars necessary. Cyclists have access to a good network of bike paths linking various parts of the university to the city streets and parks. It’s a fairly quiet and upscale neighbourhood, with home prices significantly higher than elsewhere in the city. Take-out establishments catering largely to students offer decent prices, but everything else is going to cost you a little more up here.
Anne Marshall has lived in New York City, Glasgow (Scotland), Greensboro (NC), Toronto, and somehow ended up back in the fabulous small city of Guelph, where she grew up. She loves nothing more than exploring new areas, peering into other people’s apartments, houses and yards.

MOVING CAN BE STRESSFUL for children. The change can be overwhelming, but there are ways to make it easier on them.
Most children will feel some anger, sadness or may worry about the move. Reassure them they aren’t alone and it’s OK to have these feelings.
It’s important to inform your kids about the family’s plans to move as soon as you can. The more time they have to prepare, the easier it will be for them, say child psychologists who suggest that children should participate in the decision-making.
Involve your kids in the packing process and start packing items you will not need ahead of time.
If kids feel included and take ownership of their new-home decision, the transition will go much easier. Moving is a family process so share the excitement and responsibilities with every member of the family. Give everyone an age-appropriate responsibility. Kids will enjoy decorating their moving boxes. And when you are in your new home, it will be easier for them to find their stuff. Throughout the move, stay as upbeat and calm as possible. Give your children a chance to express their feelings and try to be honest about your own feelings.
Sentimental items your children treasure such as special blankets, beloved stuffed animals and photo albums should be kept in a separate bag or box which they can keep close until moving day, and then bring with them to your new home. Plan a date to tour your new neighbourhood with your family. If it’s not a long distance, why not ride your bikes and scope out your children’s favourite activities and even fast food locations, new neighbourhood tennis courts, soccer clubs, baseball associations. Check with the local school PTA to determine if there is a Welcome Wagon program, arrange a tour of their new school and meet the teachers ahead of moving day.

IN SPITE OF THE WARM WEATHER, there’s no better time to chill. Calm and relaxing living spaces are all the rage in home decor this season, with trendy walls sporting soft and subtle colours, according to leading brand SICO paint in its summer 2016 palette. “From yellow-tinged whites to pale, floral-like pastels anchored by dark grey and black accents, the season’s paint palette is a reflection of the public’s increasing desire for tranquility and balance,” said Geneviève Paiement, brand manager for Sico paint, a brand of PPG. “The cocooning trend is back in full force, as

consumers choose to create home-based sanctuaries and cut through the technological, political and economic clutter of the outside world by lightening up their surroundings.” Topping the Sico paint brand’s list of popular colours are Himalayan White (6090-11*) creamy white, Alpine Morning (6163-31) soft green, Zuni Landscape (607321) light coffee brown, Cotton Duck (6186-63) taupe, Basalt Grey (6208-63) steel, Flanders Lake (6169-73) slate, Venice Skyline (6082-31) dusty rose and Violet Ambiance (6013-31) mauve.
“The contrast between soft and dark tones delivers a sense of stability to a room,” Paiement said, adding that soothing, powdery pastels also work well with earthy neutrals to create an aura of wellness, purity and peace. She offered this advice on incorporating the season’s trendy colours into your decor: PICK A ROOM, ANY ROOM: No longer are pastels confined to nurseries, kids’ rooms or feminine-style decor. Today’s pale hues work well in any space, from kitchens to living rooms, and can actually appear masculine when paired with bold colours and patterns. Add warmth, charm and depth to a kitchen, for example, by painting cabinets in a soft colour rather than traditional white. Or make a living area appear larger yet cozy by painting the walls a soft blue and decorating with navy blue or turquoise patterned fabrics. INCORPORATE THE UNEXPECTED: Use contrasting colours in surprising ways to bring interest and flair to a space. A pastelpainted room, for example, can come to life by painting an accent wall a dark grey or slate colour and adding industrial-inspired pieces, such as black-metal Iight fixtures, furniture or accessories. A room with pale walls can also be energized by introducing a bright punch of colour, painted on the wall behind an open bookcase or around a piece of artwork, or incorporated into furnishings. PLAY WITH FINISHES: Pair matte and high-gloss pastel paints side by side for a rich, current look. For example, create a chic powder room by painting the walls in alternating sheens of the Sico paint brand’s Venice Skyline (6082-31) dusty rose, using stripes or colour blocking patterns. Or, make a statement with a piece of furniture painted a high-gloss version of the pastel wall colour. Another option is to apply pale floral-patterned wallpaper on one wall and paint the rest of the room a shade pulled from the design.
