Wish list What’s on your wish list when searching for a home to lease? I did an informal survey with a small group of past and present renters to see what people look for, and the results are in. In the top spot – without a doubt – are actually two key items that go hand-in-hand: clean and quiet. A building with reliable security system was also near the top of the list in many cases, as was a property manager that responded quickly to issues, and a laundry room that was
readily available and fully functional. New appliances and new paint were also in demand and in one case, a home that offered lots of natural light was a request. While your “Top 10” list may read differently, make sure you do in fact have a list handy so that you can compare apples with apples when shopping for a space to lease. I know some people look at having lots of space as a luxury – but not me. I dislike living in more space than I need. It just becomes a place store stuff and more rooms to clean. I’ve always been like this. It’s not a matter of budget, it’s a matter of lifestyle. I like to have the right amount of space. Some people need to upsize for various reasons. Working from home? Sure, that home office is absolutely a need. Growing family? I can see the point of more rooms here quite easily. But when the nest is empty or the opportunity avails itself, downsizing
can be a really good idea. A home should be a place you live, not just a place to accommodate all of the stuff you accumulate. You shouldn’t need to upsize because your stuff doesn’t fit – not that can’t! If you love shopping and collecting, by all means, find the right sized place for you and your things. But often it’s a matter of the right storage, not needing more space. It’s a great way to budget better – and clean less! STONEY CREEK begins east of the Red
Valley Parkway, including the area from Lake Ontario up to Rymal Road, and ends where Grimsby begins, at Fifty Road/11th Road East. The area is popular among families, young urban professionals as well as seniors. Outdoorsy types who still require urban comforts will really feel at home in Stoney Creek. You can go for a hike atop the World Biosphere Reserve, looking out on what can only be described as a panoramic vista, then take a short drive down the parkway to all of the shopping and cultural options that Hamilton has to offer.
Most of the original settlement took place below “the Mountain” (aka the Niagara Escarpment), but there’s been a recent housing boom in the formerly very rural upper town, where several new subdivisions have grown in the last decade, with many more on the horizon. Families raising children and younger professionals make up a good chunk of the population, but there’s a healthy percentage of active seniors living here too, particularly in lower Stoney Creek. There are a lot of families in Stoney Creek and a lot of elementary schools, most of which are in the
more established part of town below the escarpment. Stoney Creek has decent public transit. Cyclists will find bike lanes and paths make it easier to get around, but most residents still drive to work and for errands. Close proximity to the QEW (via three interchanges), the Red Valley Parkway, Highway 8, and Highway 20 make it an excellent choice for commuters.
Anne Marshall has lived in New York City, Glasgow (Scotland), Greensboro (NC), Toronto, and somehow ended up back in the fabulous small city of Guelph, where she grew up. She loves nothing more than exploring new areas, peering into other people’s apartments, houses and yards.
