pring is here, regardless of what the Weather Network keeps saying. The start of spring always means three things. Get your taxes ready, get your spring cleaning done and get your balcony ready for better weather.
Take your rent receipts and talk to your accountant. As part of the Ontario Property Tax Credit your rent may be a deductible. There are specific criteria to be met (isn’t there always with the CRA?) but all renters should investigate whether they’re eligible to claim it. Now that you’ve gotten all that paperwork together, all those receipts gathered and the rest filed away for next year, you’re already on your way to spring cleaning! It’s time to tackle that other stuff – the piles, the junk drawer, the odds and sods you’ve been holding on to for too long. Those things that have no purpose but to take up space. Apartments are great for spring cleaning because you are forced to face your stuff. You can’t tuck it away in an attic or a garage, you’ve got limited storage space for the ‘extras’ so you need to be decisive. Your options are: Rent a bigger place or get rid of it if you don’t need it. Figure out what your needs are. Spring is also the right time to think about your patio, terrace or balcony. Smallscale furnishing are becoming a more accessible trend so that you’ve got options for some simple balcony furnishings – a chaise, a table, a few chairs – whatever will give you the best use of your outdoor space. Don’t ignore your green thumb, either. You may not have a yard, but there are all kinds of new products filling the shelves at the gardening centre for balcony-friendly solutions for everything from herbs to flowers. Consider some attractive pots and get container gardening. Spring is also a great time for apartment hunting, and we’re always here to help. RESIDENTS, RENTERS, TENANTSTS, APARTMENT OFFICIANADOS, IT’S TIME TO GO THROUGH THOSE CUPBOARDS, DIG INTO those pantries and pick up a few extras the next time you go grocery shopping. The 14th Annual Spring H.O.P.E. Food Drive is taking place on Tuesday April 8. H.O.P.E. stands for Housing Owners and People Everywhere, a real sense of a community looking after each other. The Food Banks shelves sure could use some restocking and Apartment Associations across the province, in conjunction with landlords and property management companies are making it easy for you to pitch in by collecting donations in support. You can expect a knock on the door between 6:30 and 9:30 pm from canvassing volunteers happy to pick up your donation. You can leave your donation outside of your door if you won’t be available, you can bring food down to your super or site office in advance and you can even make an online donation at www. springhopefooddrive.ca. The lovely thing about Spring H.O.P.E. is that all food collected stays within the TheRentersGuide.ca community – residents should feel good that they’ll be supporting neighbours. Hunger can affect anyone in need – it doesn’t discriminate by age, background or neighbourhood.
Bank, this food drive is one of the most important because of its timing.“It’s a time of year when the shelves are depleting,” she says.“The infusion of food restocks our shelves.” The most needed items are the staples: rice, peanut butter, tins of fish, lentils, cereal – anything with good, substantial nutritious value. There is also always great need for baby food and products. Do what you can, even if it’s just a single item sitting at the back of your shelf that you know isn’t going to be used. And if your building isn’t participating, you can still make a donation directly to your local food bank. “The food drive receives incredible support and participation is up,” says Bonnie Hoy, rental industry professional and President of Bonnie Hoy and TheRentersGuide.ca Associates.

WHY DOES THE RETURN OF LONGER DAYS AND WARMER TEMPERATURES trigger an urge to purge our homes of clutter and engage in cleaning them from top to bottom? In climates with a cold winter, spring was traditionally seen as the best season for dusting because it was getting warm enough to open windows and doors and the high winds could carry the dust out of the house. In winter-weary Canada, the good weather means we can finally relegate our boots and heavy outerwear to the back of the closet. And just as birds can be seen fashioning their nests in the spring, so does a similar instinct to freshen up and “feather” our own nests suddenly manifest itself.

In tackling your own apartment, organize the task into decluttering and cleaning and spread it out over a period of several weeks. Before getting started, make sure you have all necessary cleaning supplies on hand (broom, vacuum, mop, TheRentersGuide.ca bucket, cleaning cloths and enough cleaning products).

DE-CLUTTERING: Thoroughly clean all boots, footwear and outerwear and clean out your coat closet. Go through your collection of hats, gloves, and scarves, washing and cleaning where necessary, discarding odd gloves and organizing all into storage baskets. Wash your boot tray or hallway mat and put away in a closet until next winter. Remove everything from your pantry and straighten up all your dry ingredients, discarding stale boxes of cereal, cookies, crackers, etc. Take an inventory of what you need and replenish with fresh spices, oils and other staples. Check under the sink and refresh your supply of sponges, cleaning products and other supplies. Go through your dishes, cutlery and cookware, discarding odd, broken items or things you never use. Treat yourself to a trip to a kitchen supply store and purchase something that will make food preparation and serving easier, such as a good set of storage containers, some new glasses, or a special serving piece.

become a pack rat. Does your coffee table look like a war zone? Move everything off of it and re-evaluate what you want it to be, a focal point for the room or a catch-all for your books and papers. Go through your upper and lower bathroom cupboards, discarding all expired cosmetics and other products. Replace and replenish soaps, body wash, shampoo, sunscreen, paper products, etc. Check the condition of your towels – if you can afford it, spring is a good time to invest in a set of new ones. Take time to re-arrange your wardrobe, so that warm weather garments are more accessible. Wash or dry clean garments before storing them in zippered bags. Go through your closets, drawers, shoe collection, cleaning, polishing, repairing and discarding where necessary. Donate apparel you no longer use. Some apartment buildings have charity drop boxes right on the grounds; if yours doesn’t, take things you no longer need or use to a shelter or resale centre.
CLEANING: Turn off your refrigerator and begin by cleaning the dust off the coils (these are usually at the bottom, under the grill). Clean with a vacuum attachment or damp cloth. the freezer and wipe the interior with a solution of 2 tbs. baking soda per 1 litre hot water. Clean all the surfaces of the kitchen, including the walls, backsplashes, tops and doors of cupboards and the oven. Clean out your files, reviewing bank statements, paid bills, contracts, household inventories, warranties and other personal documents. Clean your computer keyboard with a cotton swab; wipe the screen with a special cloth and spray cleaning solution.
Clean the frames with all-purpose cleaner or more vinegar and water. Wipe down or vacuum all furniture and other surfaces, such as windowsills and baseboards. Clean window coverings and rugs. Check the batteries in your smoke detector and ensure they are fee of dust. Moving all the furniture to clean around and underneath where possible, dust and vacuum every room in the apartment, then wash and mop all floors. Open the windows and let the fresh air and sunshine in. Now, sit down and relax and enjoy the pleasure of your clean apartment!
Thoroughly clean or replace your mattress pad. Replace winter bedding with lighter, warm weather blankets. Clean your pillows to rid them of mould, bacteria and odours. If you’ve been using your balcony as a storeroom, now is the time to move those snow tires, bicycles and other large items out of sight. On a warm day when the sun is not shining directly, go out and clean your balcony sliding door. Mix up a solution of one part white vinegar and one part hot water. Using a large sponge, rub the glass with the water and vinegar solution to rub away the dirt. Wet a squeegee and wipe the glass thoroughly. Wipe the surfaces with lintfree cloths such as cloth diapers or other cloths that have not been laundered with fabric softener which will leave a residue.

WHEN THE FEDERATION OF RENTAL-HOUSING PROVIDERS OF ONTARIO (FRPO) CREATED THE CERTIFIED RENTAL BUILDING PROGRAM (CRBP) to improve the quality of life of apartment dwellers and staff in the province, we knew that accountability was a key factor in the program’s effectiveness for everyone involved. To ensure objectivity and reporting of the finest quality, we enlisted J.D. Power and Associates to conduct all the building audits for participating firms. Established in 1968, that well-respected third-party independent performance measurement firm conducts unbiased surveys of customer satisfaction, product quality and buyer behaviour in a number of major industries.. The Building Audit component of the CRBP helps to ensure that the property managers and owners of certified buildings are conducting their dayto-day business with good practices and processes in place. CREAM OF CAULIFLOWER SOUP (Crème du Barry)
INGREDIENTS Serves 6 to 8
› 2 tbsp butter
› 2 cups 10% cream
› 2 cups chopped leeks, white portion only, rinsed well
› 1 bay leaf
› 1 head of cauliflower, cut into florets › 4 cups chicken or vegetable broth
› 2 tsp sea salt and freshly ground white pepper, to taste › fresh chives or chervil, for garnish
DIRECTIONS
In a large soup pot over medium heat, warm the butter. Add the leeks and sauté, stirring constantly, until tender, about five minutes. Add the cauliflower and sauté for about five minutes. Add the stock, cream, bay leaf and sea salt, bring to a simmer, reduce the heat to medium-low and cover. Simmer, stirring occasionally, until the cauliflower is very tender, about 45 to 60 minutes. Remove the bay leaf.

CALLED CRÈME DU BARRY IN FRANCE, ITS NAME LIES IN HISTORY, LIKE MANY GOOD FRENCH RECIPES. This easy, rich and creamy soup was named after Madame Jeanne Bécu, comtesse du Barry, a famous French beauty who was the last official mistress of the ill-fated king, Louis XV. At the time, it was a common practice to recognize royalty and other public figures in the naming of new culinary creations, so whenever you see the term du Barry, you know the dish includes cauliflower. I can think of many foods I might want to be named after, other than cauliflower, but in this case TheRentersGuide.ca it had to do with the dish being considered “high class” in preparation and presentation...creamy, silky, smooth, and pure. Although, Madame Du Barry was not exactly pure, her legend lives on in this velvety smooth and delicious soup. TheRentersGuide.ca 42
Using a stick blender, purée the soup directly in the pot until it’s very smooth and creamy. Alternatively, use a food processor, and puree the soup in batches. Press the soup through a chinois or other fine-mesh sieve set over a clean saucepan. Season with white pepper. Keep the soup warm over low heat until ready to serve. Ladle the soup into warmed individual bowls, garnishing each serving with some fresh ground white pepper, snipped chives or chervil. Serve immediately.

Moving can be one of the most stressful events in life, so why should that be any different for your dog?
HERE ARE 10 TIPS ON HOW TO PREPARE YOUR DOG:

Under no circumstances should you place your dog in the back of a moving truck. Even safely tucked in a well-ventilated pet travel carrier, the truck is almost always hot (even in winter) and of course, the doors are closed.

Your dog will most likely want to play with the movers and probably everyone else, so take him/her to a kennel, dog spa or have a friend or relative dogsit at their home, before the movers arrive. Those will be the best places for your furry friend; then you can devote your total attention to your moving activities.

If your dog must be with you during your move, keep your loved one outside or out of the movers’ way. Dogs crave the attention of strangers and can create obstacles which will impede the move.

Have dog treats on hand for move day to keep your dog quiet. It’s also good way to get your dog to listen and obey. And, it’s a great idea to have water and nutritious human treats for your movers as well. Pack a separate box of your dog’s favourite toys. Once at your new home, your dog may be frightened of the new surroundings, so, having familiar playthings ready will reduce stress levels. Don’t forget that your dog will be excited on move day and will need plenty of water. Exercise is the best way to get your dog ready, more relaxed and calm for when the movers arrive. Depending on your dog’s age and size, draining your dog’s energy level may not be easy, so plan frequent walks. I know that a 30-minute walk barely makes a dent in our dog’s energy level.

Make sure you let your pet out for “mess” breaks. Nothing will ruin your moving day experience more TheRentersGuide.ca than a ‘surprise’ from your dog inside your new abode. Remember to clean up after your dog to avoid making a bad first impression on your neighbours.

If your dog will be around during the move, let your movers know ahead of time. You’d be surprised how many men are afraid of dogs. Whether large or small animals, it doesn’t matter. Also, there are movers that are allergic to dogs.

After the move you will be busy unpacking, so don’t ignore your dog. Take regular and long walks, if you can, to explore your new neighbourhood together or even short breaks from unpacking, to play. Time together will help your dog be better behaved during this change in everyone’s environment.

Have fun – moving into new digs is a time to celebrate. Have the movers take a picture…you, your family and your dog in your new home. What a perfect reminder of the day you just shared.

THIS WINTER’S FRIGID TEMPERATURE HAD ME DAYDREAMING about my trip last year to The James Royal
Palm in Miami, Florida. Not only was it the perfect winter getaway, the trip was filled with tons of design inspiration, that I just have to share. The hotel is designed by the hospitality mavens at Rottet Studio, the expansive property’s many interiors carry the intimacy of a boutique hotel, achieved through the attention to detail, exquisite materials and healthy collection of unique artworks. Modern wood walls make wide-open spaces more intimate, while darkgrained details on chairs, coffee tables and chests keep the palette earthy – you’ll find very little chrome in this collection, and even the exteriors are clad in limestone. It seemed every space was alive with potted plant life, and I was especially taken with the miniature cactus gardens in each suite. At the end of the day, you have to remember not to take your style too seriously – after all, Miami is about having fun! After you’ve carefully edited and selected, toss in one thing that just makes you smile and relax. The work is over, and it’s time to rest and enjoy the season – South Beach style!
