The neighbours Living in an apartment is living in a community. There are a lot of neighbours – to the left, the right, above, below and across the hall too.

The larger the apartment building, the more neighbours you’ll have.

Whether it’s the pool, the elevator, the lobby or the parking garage, you’re going to interact with quite a few of the neighbours each day.

Some buildings are social, with management companies fostering a sense of community through resident events, from coffee mornings and summer barbecues to holiday parties.

Amenities like on-site playgrounds are great for families, where kids can play together and the parents can actually have adult conversations.

Screening rooms and games rooms can also be a great way to mingle and schmooze with neighbours – what could be better than a bit of socializing without having to go out.

But there’s a fine line when you live in a community. You don’t want to be the guy on the elevator who won’t make eye contact, let alone say “Hello” – but you also don’t want to be the guy that knows everyone’s business and talks out of school about what’s going on with the couple in 3B. Remember that your home and your community are what you make of them. With a little bit of effort and interest you can enjoy the people you live with and develop meaningful relationships. Whether it’s playdates for the kids, dinner parties, or just someone who is able to water the plants when you go on vacation, it’s always nice to have a few friendly faces to come home to.

villages, the largest of which is Fonthill, the area of Niagara known as Pelham is located to the west of Thorold and Welland, south of St. Catharines, and east of Lincoln.

Taking it easy seems to be the order of the day in Pelham. Other than cyclists, you won’t see anyone here in a particular hurry. The weekly Farmer’s Market on Thursday evenings is a major social event.

The abundance of good Italian food, incredible natural beauty and generous spirit are probably the best reasons to choose this particularly rural part of Niagara, from a city

slicker’s perspective.

Rural and idyllic, Pelham has a very different feel from the busier Niagara communities that surround it. Perched atop the Niagara Escarpment, you can turn onto nearly any side road heading north and catch a breathtaking view of Lake Ontario in the distance. While much of the area is still farmland, dotted with the occasional fourcorners hamlet, there’s real suburban growth occurring.

Home to a slightly older population than other parts of Niagara, the dream of retiring to the country is a reality for many folks here. Residents

are down-to-earth, friendly, and extremely proud of the area’s rich history and agricultural heritage. It seems like a place that would be welcoming to newcomers regardless of their origins.

Given its rural setting, it’s no surprise that the best way to get around Pelham is by car. There is Highway 20, and the 406 connects to it as well as the QEW and Highway 3.

The St. Catharines Transit Pelham Rd. route will get you close, and Welland offers a similar not-quite-there service. Bike trails abound, but these are more useful for recreational rides.

MOVING TO A NEW HOME is an

exciting and stressful time. Think: a new space, a different layout, a blank canvas!

But before you move into your new residence, you’ve got to move out of the old. You’ve got lots of stuff which means many boxes, which means lots of work. As they say about new beginnings: To make room for more, sometimes you’ve got to let things go.

In anticipation of the move, purge your belongings. There’s value in decluttering your home before you move. The process itself forces you to itemize and organize your belongings, which is always helpful before tackling moving day.

Take note of what your must haves are, what will work in your new space and what you want to leave behind.

Know that when you hire a mover, you pay for space and time. Items for which you have no use or need, if packed, take up valuable space in the truck that could be used to carry something else. Also, the labour and effort of properly packing and carrying those items costs you time.

Don’t pay to transport something you don’t need.

Moving needn’t be expensive if you plan properly. Consumers can help subsidize the cost of hiring a professional mover by selling unwanted items like couches or furniture sets. Luckily for savvy savers, all it takes is a few keyboard clicks.

Other alternatives could be donating to favourite charities and local furniture banks. Give someone else a fresh start from belongings that don’t make the cut for your new space.

Look for fixtures that require more than one bulb for added lightning. Make sure none of your current bulbs are burnt out, and have fun with this. You can even accessorize by adding some new lamps or lanterns around your home.

Add mirrors Mirrors give the illusion that a space is bigger. Hanging them not only helps make an area feel roomier, but because they reflect light, mirrors also essentially double the amount of light you have in your unit. They help with the stream of light in a
