Average rent There is a lot of discussion about the average rent in a city. Organizations like the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Association collect data on rent, and this number is often cited in the news. But don’t expect to budget by that average. Rent varies between provinces and cities – but there’s also significant variation within a city. While stats are collected and developed on each product – one bedrooms, two bedrooms, etc. – the data is generally based on the rates set by purpose-built rental apartment buildings. It doesn’t account for investor-owned condo renals, second suites or private residences. Average rent also doesn’t address the differences in neighbourhoods – safer, trendier and more upscale areas are going to be much more expensive, while there will cheaper options at the other end of the spectrum. It’s supply

and demand that dictates pricing. Average rent also doesn’t take into account elements like onsite amenities, parking or even address the difference between all inclusive units versus units where all of the utilities and laundry are additional expenses. When you’re ready to move you’ll need to start looking around in your preferred neighbourhood and see what the average rent is where you want to live. It’s a more effective way of budgeting because location and style dictate price. If you search solely based on price, investigate the neighbourhoood to ensure you know what to expect. STONEY CREEK begins east of the Red
Valley Parkway, including the area from Lake Ontario up to Rymal Road, and ends where Grimsby begins, at Fifty Road/11th Road East. The area is popular among families, young urban professionals as well as seniors. Outdoorsy types who still require urban comforts will really feel at home in Stoney Creek. You can go for a hike atop the World Biosphere Reserve, looking out on what can only be described as a panoramic vista, then take a short drive down the parkway to all of the shopping and cultural options that Hamilton has to offer.
Most of the original settlement took place below “the Mountain” (aka the Niagara Escarpment), but there’s been a recent housing boom in the formerly very rural upper town, where several new subdivisions have grown in the last decade, with many more on the horizon. Families raising children and younger professionals make up a good chunk of the population, but there’s a healthy percentage of active seniors living here too, particularly in lower Stoney Creek. There are a lot of families in Stoney Creek and a lot of elementary schools, most of which are in the
more established part of town below the escarpment. Stoney Creek has decent public transit. Cyclists will find bike lanes and paths make it easier to get around, but most residents still drive to work and for errands. Close proximity to the QEW (via three interchanges), the Red Valley Parkway, Highway 8, and Highway 20 make it an excellent choice for commuters.
Anne Marshall has lived in New York City, Glasgow (Scotland), Greensboro (NC), Toronto, and somehow ended up back in the fabulous small city of Guelph, where she grew up. She loves nothing more than exploring new areas, peering into other people’s apartments, houses and yards.

I love wall detailing – even the most subtle elements can make an incredible impact. Both wallpaper and wood detailing can give you an elegant custom look, but if a project of this scale isn’t in the cards for you, try a Bohemian wall hanging. An alternate to adding in bold, dramatic dark colours is to incorporate bright and cheery accents. Try a new headboard which will make a dramatic statement. Adding a few stools in the same pattern but different colours will also make a huge impact. joalcorn.ca
