Good news, Ontario homeowners and prospective homebuyers – your housing market is expected to be among the strongest in Canada this year. For this, we can thank a reasonably strong economy and continuing low interest rates, among other factors. The Canadian Real Estate Association, in fact, forecasts that Ontario and BC will lead the country in 2016 in terms of sales activity and price growth.
The national picture is bright, with sales forecast to grow five per cent and prices 8.4 per cent. In Ontario, sales are projected to rise 9.3 per cent, and average prices eight per cent. BC will be tops in Canada, expected to grow more than 21 per cent in sales and 11.5 per cent in average prices. Other markets across the country should be so lucky, with far more challenging economies and other local factors

LONDON A city of growth and opportunity THE CITY OF LONDON is much
more than the hub of southwestern Ontario. True, the city of 360,000 residents (470,000 including surrounding villages and towns) is known as The Forest City for its abundance of urban forests. Yet London offers a cornucopia of sights and sounds that truly make it a beloved destination, and concurrently the perfect place to call “home.” London’s population was boosted by 60,000 people with a 1961 annexation, and by 1976 there were 250,000 residents. Another annexation in 1991 changed the city forever.

More recent local heroes include 2010 Winter Olympic Ice Dancing Gold Medalists Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir. Today, London’s demographics showcase a diverse, multicultural mosaic, with English, Scottish, Irish, German, Italian and Latin ethnic
origins all heavily represented. London’s commercial identity demonstrates a diverse flavour. Manufacturing, health care and social assistance, retail, education and accommodation/food services top London’s industrial chart. A combined effort from the city, the London Economic Development Corp. (LEDC), London Chamber of Commerce and Tourism London ensures the city remains vibrant in its efforts to attract business and cater to its residents who love the small-town feel within a large city. New highrise condominiums are being erected in a rejuvenated city core. Neighbourhood Profile OLD NORTH LONDON The elegant heritage neighbourhood is a popular neighbourhood for staff at the University of Western Ontario, as well students who are looking for an alternative to dormitory living. Lifestyle Healthy, active people enjoying the finer things in life is what Old North London’s all about. A very “happening” part of the city, from the sports fields to the research breakthroughs at UWO. It’s ideal for those who like the quiet life: an aesthete’s dream from an architectural standpoint, and a safe neighbourhood for people of all ages. Vibe More stately and affluent than the trendy neighbouring areas to the south, Old North London has a distinctly respectable feel. The area is dominated by institutions, and backs onto the university’s campus via the famous Richmond Gates. It’s quiet and scenic, a refined escape from all of the excitement offered downtown. Meet the neighbours Affluent families with children flock to Old North London, and people under the age of 19 make up almost 20 per cent of the population, according to the 2011 Census. Married couples without children at home are well represented, and many academics (both active and Emeritus) also call the area home. Given the abundance of high-density housing and proximity to campus, it’s also a very desirable location for students. In the area The university and its affiliate colleges offer a host of amenities that locals can access. The University Tennis Centre, which offers lessons to all ages and league play seven days a week for adults, is very popular. Numerous parks add to the ambience of this very green neighbourhood, including Ross, Broughdale, Tetherwood, North Branch and Doidge Park. Planes, trains & automobiles This can be a very pedestrian-friendly area, particularly if you’re a student, with the campus in easy reach. But bigger houses mean bigger blocks, and a long walk to places like the supermarket in this heavily residential area, so most homeowners find cars necessary. Cyclists have access to a good network of bike paths linking various parts of the university to the city streets and parks.

builds a mountain of toys for City Kidz THE HAMILTON-HALTON Home Builders’ Association recently held its annual Holiday Social and Toy Drive, collecting more than 100 toys that were donated to City Kidz. This toy drive was a great success, with more toys donated than last year thanks to the generous support of Association members and partners. Every year, the HHHBA answers the call to collect much needed toys for kids in our community and every year the success of this event continues to grow. The new toys were donated to City Kidz, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of children living in the inner city. This year, City Kidz hopes to collect 4,000 new toys for children in the Hamilton community. They will distribute the gifts at their annual Christmas parties where they provide children with dinner, candy bags, prizes and a personally selected gift.
