Matthew
Matthew was born in August 2012, three weeks prematurely. At 30 weeks gestation a routine ultrasound showed fluid in his abdomen. Matthew’s mom, Gillian, was transferred to the high risk unit at their local hospital. Their doctor there suspected that Matthew had meconium peritonitis, a rupture of the bowel. This is rarely seen in babies in utero, but is associated with babies who have cystic fibrosis. His parents were tested and learned that they carry the gene for cystic fibrosis. This came as a total surprise to them as there is no CF in their families. At birth, Matthew had a blood test and was confirmed to have CF and presented with the “classic” form – the delta gene. He was transferred to SickKids and had surgery to unblock his bowel on his first day of life. He had some complications, and spent six weeks at SickKids. Shortly before Christmas, he had a second surgery and was in hospital for three days. Matthew’s condition has already affected his pancreas and although it has not yet affected his lungs, his parents expect that it will as he develops and grows. They do physiotherapy with him daily to keep his lungs as healthy as possible. “It’s the worst feeling watching your child fight to get better,” says Gillian. “But despite his condition, Matthew’s been a happy boy providing us smiles.” Matthew’s parents decided that they want to do everything they can to help advance research. They met Dr. Felix Ratjen, head of respiratory medicine and co-director of the Cystic Fibrosis centre, who spoke to them about CF stem cell research and they readily agreed to allow SickKids to take a sample of Matthew’s skin when he came to have his surgery in December. “You can’t do anything to help other than be there and love them unconditionally. There were really two reasons behind participating in the research study: a little hope and a lot of fear. My optimistic side would say a lot of hope,” says Gillian. Last year, SickKids researcher, Dr. Janet Rossant and her team became the first in the world to use skin cells from patients with CF to produce mature lung cells in a petri dish. Lung cells generated from patients can be used to develop and test drugs that target the genetic mutation underlying the condition. If the drugs work on the lung cells, then later they may also be tried on the patient. Until recently, the only therapies available for patients with CF targeted the symptoms, like infection and digestive disorders, rather than the underlying genetic alteration.

Timely tips for

WHEN PURCHASING REAL ESTATE IN ONTARIO,
you should obtain the services of a real estate agent. The real estate agent will give you the following useful suggestions as you proceed through the process of purchasing. 1 | Always obtain a building inspection for both residential and commercial properties. 2 | Obtain a copy of the zoning by-law for both residential and commercial properties, but more importantly where the purchase is that of a duplex or triplex. 3 | If you are purchasing vacant land for the purpose of building, visit the building department in your area to determine if there are any unusual requirements such as setback and height requirements. Be particularly careful in rural areas where municipalities have some unusual local requirements. 4 | Ascertain what the cost of obtaining a building permit will be and whether there are any unusual levies, development charges or park dedication.
5 | Purchasers should know that they will need insurance when buying property that contains a building. It is also a good idea to buy liability insurance when purchasing vacant land, whether it’s residential or commercial. You may be able to extend your personal residence liability insurance to the vacant land. 6 | When you are selling property, you are required to obtain utility readings and cancel your insurance. When cancelling insurance, make the cancellation the day after closing unless the closing is on a Friday. If insurance cancels at midnight and there is a fire and you are still the owner, you will be without insurance. If the closing is scheduled for a Friday, request the cancellation for the following Monday or Tuesday in the event of a statutory holiday in case the transaction does not close on the intended closing date.

A house is a home. So the real question is how do you turn the bricks and mortar into a place where you can make memories. So, first and foremost, ask yourself what the needs of your family are. What do you truly need in your home? Is your family going to be growing, or will you be downsizing? Is a yard a must-have or just a burden and you prefer that someone else look after maintenance?
