You’ve found that perfect place, now what? It’s not just the search – just when you think you’ve found the perfect place to call home, you’ll face your next hurdle. The application. Some landlords will offer you an apartment on the spot, but most will make you go through the application process. They want to check your references, you employment and your credit.

Be aware, you have to authorize, with signed consent, for a prospective landlord to do a credit check. You’ll also be required to leave last month’s rent as a deposit. This will eventually be applied, upon your next move, to your last month in your apartment. The landlord can ask for first and last month’s rent with your application or lease, but will often take last and then accept first when you pick up your keys.

LAWRENCE HEIGHTS is bordered by Jane Street in the west, the Allen Road in the east, Willson in the north, and Lawrence Avenue West in the south. This quiet neighbourhood is home to a close-knit community made up of both young families and seniors, often all living together in the same household. Walking down the residential streets of Lawrence Heights, you feel like you’re in a close-knit community. It’s the kind of place where people know their neighbours and stop to talk with them. There aren’t a lot of restaurants or nightlife, the area is quiet at night with

the exception of a few restaurants and Yorkdale, where the movie theatres are open in the evening. Lawrence Heights is convenient, with schools, libraries, and lots of greenspace. There is plenty of shopping, particularly at Yorkdale, Orfus Road, and Lawrence Square, although the shopping areas are mostly clustered at the eastern end of the neighbourhood. It’s easy to get around this neighbourhood – and access other parts of the city too. The northeast and southeast corners of the neighbourhood are anchored by two subway stations, and buses run along

the neighbourhood’s boundaries as well as along main and side streets through the area. The Allen Road is a convenient north-south corridor, and the 401 runs through too. Lawrence Heights is a relatively inexpensive neighbourhood to live in, with budget friendly rents and larger apartments that can accommodate a bigger family. It is well serviced by public transit, has good shopping, and has some lovely parks and residential areas.

The perks of LIVING ALONE By Kathryn Kusyszyn

TO HAVE A ROOM OF ONE’S OWN, as famously championed by Virginia Woolf, is a necessity for a woman writer. In modern times, more women (and men), whether writers or not, are taking advantage of financial independence to enjoy the benefits of solitary living. In our overcrowded world, with incessant advertising, stimulation, and pollution of all sorts, living alone provides a sanctuary for the soul. It’s a respite for the individual who needs to recharge, with somewhat surprising social and creative implications. Primary among the benefits of living alone is the freedom afforded to come and go as one likes, do as one pleases, and not answer to anyone. There is no need to deal with others’ preferences in the areas of music, food, decorating, entertainment, temperature and above all, cleanliness. Only one person’s mess to clean up, one person’s laundry, one person’s dishes… ah, heavenly!

Other perks are privacy and the opportunity for full self-expression. No one is present to cramp one’s style. Wandering the house in all manner of (un)dress is perfectly acceptable, as is ordering in at 3am, having spontaneous dance parties, and leaving the dishes unwashed for days. This type of home is conducive to productivity, since there is no one around to get into long conversations with. The next Great Canadian novel is more likely to be written without the distraction of others. When one does desire company, it is by choice. Eric Klinenberg, author of the book The Extraordinary Rise and Surprising appeal of Living Alone, found that people who lived alone spent more time with friends and neighbours than married couples. Apparently so-called ‘loners’ have the best of both worlds, quiet when they want it and company when they want it. The benefit of guaranteed quiet at home is a welcome contrast

to the outside world. Especially for introverts, who recharge by spending time alone, this living arrangement is desirable and potentially essential for their wellbeing. Home becomes an oasis, a place of restorative solitude. A single inhabitant home can also be a castle. Knowing that everything is just where one left it (excepting mischievous pets), is a feature not available to multi-person households. It’s grounding and stabilizing. Not to mention that the last piece of cake is never eaten by someone else. So if you think about it, for reasons of social health, peace of mind, selfexpression and creativity, solitary living is on the upswing. Virginia would certainly approve.

Your friends, family, and recent connections are reading the signs when they enter your home – and are making some interesting notes. Don’t send out mix signals. This is what your home decor is saying about you: STILL LOOKS LIKE MOVE-IN DAY Decorating a rental might feel impossible because of painting and other decor restrictions, but leaving your apartment bare gives off the impression that you’re lazy and uninventive. You have paintings to hang up, they’ve just been leaning against the wall since move-in day, and any other attempt at home decor basically began and ended when you bought red pillows for the living room. White walls and parquet flooring is not a style! Stop being afraid of taking a few risks and start adding some personality to your home. MIX AND MATCH EVERYTHING You don’t like to be confined by labels or limited by a certain aesthetic. You have eclectic taste. Your home style is a mix and match of second-hand furniture from your parents’ home, a combination of bad house warming gifts and items you refuse to live without. You just can’t say no to the things you love or bear to let a good item go to waste. Your taste won’t please everybody, but at least we know you’re all about functionality and living by your own rules.
