hether you’re relocating from one coast to the other or moving to your first place out of parents home, changing homes can be hectic, exciting and certainly stressful. But, relax.

You can eliminate all the anxiety sometimes associated with moving by taking control of the situation with confidence. If you decide to move yourself, book a moving truck well in advance from a reliable company that can help you give you tips on moving as well as advice regarding the size of vehicle you will need. If you decide to go with a pro, ask your friends and family for a recommendation of mover. Call at least three companies to ask about their services and then decide. Professional movers can do everything for you if you wish, from packing and unpacking, to disconnecting appliances and electronics, but of course there’s extra cost involved. Make sure you understand the terms of your agreement no matter what you decide as well any other additional costs, such as insurance and mileage costs so you can budget accordingly.

his year Labour Day comes late - as late as is possible, the 7th. It feels like we won a little bit of extra summer, so don’t put away those white shoes just yet! But get busy putting everything else away.

September 1st is a popular moving day. People want to get settled before school starts – whether parents of school-aged children, post-secondary students setting up their own homes, or educators that will be getting back to work after a summer respite. If school isn’t part of your world, well then it will explain why you’ve found this month such a busy and difficult one to move.

Busy months have movers booked, trucks reserved and friends spread thin. If you’re relying on some friends to do-it-yourself with a bit of help, you may have to consider how many other people are moving and needing that muscle on September 1st too. If you’re moving to accommodate school, you’ll find it’s a bit more of a rush to settle in, too. Where the summer offered long, easy days, the start of the school year wraps up a large part of your free time – not just at school, but traveling to and from, homework, meetings, extracurriculars and trips to the library. You have the extra seven days, use them wisely to get your home settled and your things put away. Once the rigors of school set in, fitting the move into the routine may seem just a little more difficult. But, you made it! CORKTOWN IS A COMMUNITY ON THE MOVE AND ONE TO WATCH. As one of Toronto’s oldest ‘hoods, it’s popular with young professionals for its affordability and being within reach of the city lights, while laying claim to shops and eateries along its very own Queen Street East. A short walk or a streetcar ride away is Yonge Street to the west, with more accessibility, destination shopping and the trendy Distillery District to the south.

Corktown is a community on the move and one to watch. Corktown lays claim to the shops and eateries along King Street East, while also being within reach of the St. Lawrence Market. With warehouse conversions and loft living and working commonplace, Corktown residents now seek out King and Parliament as the goto area to browse, shop or dine. With close proximity to downtown, city nightlife is there whenever the heart desires. There is a bit of everything, from mom’n’pops shops to trendy storefronts and pricey furniture. It’s got that cool vibe of new and old intermingling. One block features the area mechanic who’s been servicing the community for decades, and on the next, you’ll find an ultra-lux spa. Live-work studios are in vogue, breathing life into tired commercial buildings, longclosed factories and storefronts. People are drawn to converted lofts and offices that have revitalized the entire neighbourhood and invited new business. Residents will find even more at the John Innes Community Recreation Centre on Sherbourne with an indoor pool, gym and running track. Residents are just a stone’s throw from the Adelaide Street ramp to the Don Valley Parkway, and an equally short distance to the Gardiner Expressway and Lakeshore Boulevard. Public transit is just as easy as the Queen and King streetcars connect to stations on the Yonge-University-Spadina subway line, while the Parliament streetcar connects passengers to the Castle Frank station on the Bloor-Danforth subway line. Retail-wise there are lots of bargains and down-to-earth shops on Queen. Lining the streets of Corktown are some of the oldest Victorian rowhouses in Toronto, dating back to the mid-1800s, many refurbished, and in great demand. Former workers’ cottages can be found on narrow laneways hidden from the main drag. WHETHER YOU’RE LOOKING FOR YOUR FIRST OR NTH RENTAL, finding the right one can pose a challenge. Here are 10 things you should think about before saying yes to the address. 1. ACCESSIBILITY: While realtors might emphasize the importance of location, it doesn’t necessarily mean just proximity to the things you care about. A unit geographically closer to work might take longer to get to than one further away but right along a major highway. Living along a subway route might make your commute more pleasant in the winter, when a 20 minute walk will chill you to the bone. 2. PRICE: A big one for most people, a good rule of thumb is to keep your housing costs (including utilities and other essentials) at about 30% of your net income. After all, what good the perfect unit if you have to drastically change your lifestyle to stay in it? You should be living your best life! 3. PROXIMITY: Although it doesn’t necessarily guarantee accessibility (see 1), there’s usually a positive correlation between how far away you are from somewhere, to how long it’ll take for you to get there. So if there are some places you know you’ll go frequently (work, school, maybe your mom’s house), it pays to consider how close they are to your new home. 4. AMENITIES: A newly built condo with all the bells and whistles will generally cost more to live in than an older, lower rise building with the basics. If you don’t have much need for a pool, party room, or extra parking, why pay for them? Save your money for the things that matter to you. 5. DEMOGRAPHICS: Think about whether your life meshes with those of your neighbours, businesses and establishments located nearby. Like peace and quiet? Living on a major road, near student housing, for example, may not be the best fit for you. On the other hand, if you’re a party animal, you might find being in a suburban, family friendly area a bit stifling. 6. TRANSPORTATION: How do you get around? Do you love to walk? An area with convenient shops and services nearby could be perfect for you. If you love driving, you might not mind your favourite stores further away, as long as there’s plenty of parking.
