THE PROUD HOME of Toronto’s vibrant LGBT community, Church Wellesley Village’ is bound by Charles Street south to Gould, and from Yonge to Jarvis. This 24-hour neighbourhood occupies the northern half of what the City of Toronto defines as the Church-Yonge Corridor. While its importance to Toronto nightlife, and in particular gay culture, can’t be overstated, local residents are more likely to rave about the area’s abundance of culinary options – from fine dining restaurants and popular pubs, to the many specialty shops that appeal to the home chef. An urbanite’s paradise, this is another

big-city neighbourhood that many locals commend for its small town feel. Friendly, funny and altogether fabulous, the Village is undoubtedly the most festive part of town. By downtown standards it’s a relative bargain, but shops and businesses cater to a more upscale clientele in general. Its proximity to Ryerson and the University of Toronto means that there are a range of reasonably priced accommodations scattered amongst the more upscale dwellings that typify the area. While most households are comprised of working adults over 25,

the area also appeals to increasing numbers of families with young children. As long-time residents age, it’s also becoming home to a healthy population of very active seniors. But the area is mainly populated by singles and couples who love the urban lifestyle. Your best bet for getting around is on foot, there’s not much that isn’t within walking distance. TTC subway stops and subway are College, Wellesley, and Bloor-Yonge.

offer a wealth of opportunities, but can also come with its own set of hurdles, like learning how to navigate a new financial system. According to a new TD survey, nearly half (45 per cent) of new Canadians said they didn’t know where to start when it came to setting up their finances in Canada, and yet almost nine in 10 (88 per cent) consider it a top priority to establish good financial standing in their first year after arriving to Canada. “Starting over in a new country can be daunting, from finding a place to live, locating new schools, learning a new language to navigating a new banking system,” said Shirley Malloy, associate vice president, Everyday Banking, TD Canada Trust. “Cash flow is often top of mind, but don’t let banking fall off the radar. Basics like a chequing account, debit and credit card are essential to day to day life, and securing them early can make it easier to pay for things like rent or groceries, allowing you to focus on building your new life.” The survey found the top three financial goals of new Canadians include saving for a down payment (51 per cent), saving for their kids’ education (35 per cent) and buying or leasing a car (35 per cent). To reach these medium to long term financial goals, establishing a positive credit history in Canada is key. In fact, building up good Canadian credit history is often required before buying or renting a home or even securing a mobile phone plan. Eventually, building a healthy credit history opens the door to more relaxed borrowing options, often with lower interest rates. “Eighty-four per cent of new Canadians wish they had a better understanding of how to build their credit rating,” said Malloy. “The reality is that there’s no quick fix when it comes to building credit. Over time, practicing sound financial habits like paying your bills on time and in full 22

will naturally result in an improved credit rating.” Malloy shares her top tips to unpack banking basics in Canada: DON’T SKIP BANKING 101: As a newcomer in a new country, take the opportunity to ask questions about banking in Canada while addressing your immediate banking needs. LEARN THE BUILDING BLOCKS: Your credit history from another country is not considered when establishing credit in Canada. That’s why it’s important practice good financial habits right from the beginning, like paying all bills on time and in full. Setting up pre-authorized debits to pay credit card and other bill balances each month is a simple and effective way to ensure payments are never missed and your credit rating continues to improve. CUT THE JARGON: There are plenty of savings opportunities, but you can’t take advantage of what you don’t understand. An advisor can explain how things like a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) or Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) can help maximize savings. PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT: Like many newcomers, you may face compressed timelines to reach your financial goals. For example, in the first five years, you may plan to buy a home, while saving for your child’s education and retirement. MOVING CAN BE STRESSFUL for children. The change can be overwhelming, but there are ways to make it easier on them.

Most children will feel some anger, sadness or may worry about the move. Reassure them they aren’t alone and it’s OK to have these feelings.

It’s important to inform your kids about the family’s plans to move as soon as you can. The more time they have to prepare, the easier it will be for them, say child psychologists who suggest that children should participate in the decision-making.

Involve your kids in the packing process and start packing items you will not need ahead of time.

If kids feel included and take ownership of their new-home decision, the transition will go much easier. Moving is a family process so share the excitement and responsibilities with every member of the family. Give everyone an age-appropriate responsibility. Kids will enjoy decorating their moving boxes. And when you are in your new home, it will be easier for them to find their stuff. Throughout the move, stay as upbeat and calm as possible. Give your children a chance to express their feelings and try to be honest about your own feelings.

Sentimental items your children treasure such as special blankets, beloved stuffed animals and photo albums should be kept in a separate bag or box which they can keep close until moving day, and then bring with them to your new home. Plan a date to tour your new neighbourhood with your family. If it’s not a long distance, why not ride your bikes and scope out your children’s favourite activities and even fast food locations, new neighbourhood tennis courts, soccer clubs, baseball associations. Check with the local school PTA to determine if there is a Welcome Wagon program, arrange a tour of their new school and meet the teachers ahead of moving day.

IN SPITE OF THE WARM WEATHER, there’s no better time to chill. Calm and relaxing living spaces are all the rage in home decor this season, with trendy walls sporting soft and subtle colours, according to leading brand SICO paint in its summer 2016 palette. “From yellow-tinged whites to pale, floral-like pastels anchored by dark grey and black accents, the season’s paint palette is a reflection of the public’s increasing desire for tranquility and balance,” said Geneviève Paiement, brand manager for Sico paint, a brand of PPG. “The cocooning trend is back in full force, as

consumers choose to create home-based sanctuaries and cut through the technological, political and economic clutter of the outside world by lightening up their surroundings.” Topping the Sico paint brand’s list of popular colours are Himalayan White (6090-11*) creamy white, Alpine Morning (6163-31) soft green, Zuni Landscape (607321) light coffee brown, Cotton Duck (6186-63) taupe, Basalt Grey (6208-63) steel, Flanders Lake (6169-73) slate, Venice Skyline (6082-31) dusty rose and Violet Ambiance (6013-31) mauve.

“The contrast between soft and dark tones delivers a sense of stability to a room,” Paiement said, adding that soothing, powdery pastels also work well with earthy neutrals to create an aura of wellness, purity and peace. She offered this advice on incorporating the season’s trendy colours into your decor: PICK A ROOM, ANY ROOM: No longer are pastels confined to nurseries, kids’ rooms or feminine-style decor. Today’s pale hues work well in any space, from kitchens to living rooms, and can actually appear masculine when paired with bold colours and patterns. Add warmth, charm and depth to a kitchen, for example, by painting cabinets in a soft colour rather than traditional white. Or make a living area appear larger yet cozy by painting the walls a soft blue and decorating with navy blue or turquoise patterned fabrics. INCORPORATE THE UNEXPECTED: Use contrasting colours in surprising ways to bring interest and flair to a space. A pastelpainted room, for example, can come to life by painting an accent wall a dark grey or slate colour and adding industrial-inspired pieces, such as black-metal Iight fixtures, furniture or accessories. A room with pale walls can also be energized by introducing a bright punch of colour, painted on the wall behind an open bookcase or around a piece of artwork, or incorporated into furnishings. PLAY WITH FINISHES: Pair matte and high-gloss pastel paints side by side for a rich, current look. For example, create a chic powder room by painting the walls in alternating sheens of the Sico paint brand’s Venice Skyline (6082-31) dusty rose, using stripes or colour blocking patterns. Or, make a statement with a piece of furniture painted a high-gloss version of the pastel wall colour. Another option is to apply pale floral-patterned wallpaper on one wall and paint the rest of the room a shade pulled from the design.

COMBINE WITH WOOD: There’s something breathtaking and Zen-like about soft pastels mixed with the warmth of wood. In a room featuring natural wood furnishings, trim or decorative moulding, choose a pale pastel tone for the walls and natural fibres and textures for furniture, throw pillows and rugs. Complete the nature-infused decor by bringing in flowers, plants and floral printed-accessories.
