Smaller households demand smaller homes Canadian households are shrinking according to Statistics Canada data. Seven decades ago, the average household consisted of 4.3 people; by 2011, the average size had dropped to 2.5 people per household, albeit, there’s plenty more of us to house. While the majority of Canadian homes over the last century were built to support larger families comprised of two parents with children, nowadays one or two people make up the majority of households, which is why apartment and condominium living – in urban areas in particular – have become increasingly popular.
The impact of smaller families on the Canadian housing market has been significant, spurring a dramatic change in the types of homes and apartments being constructed. The introduction of urban townhomes, bachelor apartments, studio lofts and condominiums of all shapes and sizes is effectively servicing smaller families and singles who need homes and nearby amenities. While larger homes are still a need for some, the next time you see another crane in the air keep this new demographic dynamic in mind.

Sure I can make my way around Montreal and Ottawa, having visited both cities countless times, and I’ve lived in Calgary and Toronto – so I have pretty good insight on both. I’ve traveled around Canada quite a bit, actually, but there is still much to learn about various neighbourhoods that make up each city. Since launching YPNextHome.ca I’ve come to find it an incredible tool. I can type an address in the search bar and it gives me the location within the city, as well as a profile of the
neighbourhood and many of that neighbourhood’s key demographics. I can then click around and see bordering neighbourhoods, check out amenities and dig deeper. At first it was useful when working, but I’ve come to rely on it heavily. I can honestly say I’ve learned a lot from using this too. I hope you’ll give it a try, it’s actually quite impressive. IF YOU’VE EVER RENTED BEFORE, ESPECIALLY IN A BUILDING, you might remember (either fondly or with hate) that one spot where everyone left their disregarded items. They weren’t necessarily unwanted items, in fact oftentimes they were great household objects that just 26

weren’t needed anymore. Some might even say it was the original Bunz Trading Zone – a popular and fast-growing online barter/trade site – albeit without the actual meet up and trade.
Even before Bunz, there were other sites that helped people get rid of their stuff. Freecycle, for example, allows you to join or start a local group, post items you no longer want and look for items you might need, but trading is not allowed. The free stuff section on Craigslist is another example. Bunz, Freecycle and Craigslist are all great ways to find some free stuff, but it’s not quite the same. Arguably it’s much better than having a ‘donations’ bag hanging around the apartment half full, waiting to be filled in order to warrant a trip to the drop-off donation site.
Lifelong renters often claim that renting is a lifestyle. Renters that hate being renters probably disagree. But even if renting is a stopover for you before homeownership, it really does offer a sort of unique lifestyle for a few reasons – one being that specific “spot.” While you still have access to neighbourhood groups, curbside finds and online trading groups when you own a home, the rental “spot” is different and pretty unique to renters.

The spot also makes it easy to get rid of clutter. Instead of holding on to unnecessary items, I just leave my stuff in that spot and it’s done – no second guessing. City living often means tight quarters, so the more often you purge, the better. If you’ve never rented, this probably sounds like dumpster diving, but it’s not – it’s an unspoken trade really. I leave that IKEA lamp I don’t want anymore that is just the thing someone else needs, and sometime down the line, I’ll likely score a new printer. It’s an unspoken bond that renters share, and we may all hate certain things about renting, but this is surely something we can all agree to love. You know the spot. What have you left for your neighbours? What have you found for yourself?
Even in a big city like Hogtown, that special spot flourishes and reminds us that while we may not know all of our neighbours well, we know we like their stuff. My apartment’s spot is just outside our gate – and

THE IDEA OF MOVING, whether it be upsizing or downsizing, can be a very exciting time – it can also be very overwhelming. Let’s face it: moving contents from one home to another can be quite a task. With a little planning and organizing, moving day can go off without a hitch. Here are some helpful tips to keep in mind when planning for the big day: 1. BOOK A REPUTABLE MOVING COMPANY WELL IN ADVANCE OF YOUR SCHEDULED MOVING DAY. The beginning and the end of the month tend to be the busiest. If you’re enlisting the help of your family and friends, have everything ready to go on moving day. They won’t be happy having to give up their free time if they’re waiting for you to complete your packing. 2. PURGE! This is the best time to donate or sell any household items including clothing that haven’t been used in the last six to 12 months. If you’re selling, post your items on Kijiji, Craigslist, or eBay about six weeks prior to your move. If you’re donating, call a local charity organization to pick up items about a week or two before moving. 3. START PACKING ROOM BY ROOM. Label boxes by listing the contents as well as the room they’ll be going in. Remember it’s easier to identify a box if the labelling is on the sides and not on the top – this makes unpacking a lot easier and more manageable. If you want to take it one step further, write an itemized list of all boxes and their contents per room for inventory. If your supply of boxes is limited, start using baskets, laundry hampers or suitcases with wheels. Suitcases are great for heavy items like books
or for the obvious – clothing. Wrap your fragile items, such as dishes and glasses, in clothing to save on bubble wrap. 4. CHANGE YOUR ADDRESS AT LEAST TWO WEEKS PRIOR TO MOVING. This may seem like an obvious task for utilities and cable, but don’t forget to advise credit card companies, magazine subscriptions, banking institutions, etc. 5. IF YOU’RE NOT AN ELECTRONICS GURU, YOU’LL WANT TO TAKE PHOTOS OF YOUR WIRE CONNECTIONS SO THAT YOU CAN REMEMBER HOW AND WHERE ALL THE WIRES GO. Wrap up cords and then tape to your electronics to keep them together. Use Ziploc bags for holding small parts that go along with curtain rods or mounted flat screen TV brackets. Tape the Ziploc bags to the back of the item they belong to. 6. PREPARE MOVING DAY ESSENTIALS. Chances are you’ll be too tired to unpack all your things so an overnight bag would be helpful especially if you’re going back to work the next day. You’ll need your essentials within easy reach – clothes for the next day, toiletries, a towel and perhaps your laptop. You should also consider using a clear plastic bin to pack items like disinfectant cleaning wipes, paper towels, toilet paper, a box cutter, garbage bags, scissors and phone chargers. Using a clear bin separates the essentials from the other cardboard boxes. With these tips, moving day should go as smoothly as possible if you give yourself enough time and stay organized!
