west of Highway 400, north of the 401 and east of the Humber Valley. The area east of the train tracks is a manufacturing district. Humberlea’s residential zones comprise two distinct areas – a long-established neighbourhood of detached homes in the southwest end and a brand-new subdivision of townhomes, semis and detached properties at the northwest corner of Humberlea. There are also a small group of older highrises at Sheppard and Weston. All of these neighbourhoods consist mainly of working families.

The streets are relatively quiet during the day and come alive when kids and parents are off from work and school. Families are at the heart of Humberlea. Large homes with small children, working parents and seniors living under one roof are common. Humberlea is extremely multicultural. Joseph Bannon Park is at the centre of the new subdivision, featuring a skating rink and splash pad, along with a large playground and greenspace. Humberlea is accessible via TTC bus service along Weston, Wilson and Sheppard. However, residents

say the area is car-dependent in order to access amenities such as larger grocery stores and fine dining restaurants to the north and south. As this community lies just northwest of where Highways 400 and 401 meet, Humberlea drivers enjoy convenient highway access out of the city. Humberlea families appreciate the peaceful and quiet community, although those looking for the downtown hustle and bustle won’t find it here.

IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR A housing option that requires little maintenance, renting is often the way to go. But depending on your lease and provincial laws, you could end up in a heap of trouble if your dog destroys your carpeted stairs or your teenager drives through the fence. Sometimes preventing damage is easy, but there are a few circumstances that have less obvious preventative measures. Here’s how to avoid a few overlooked problems that could cause harm to your rental unit. 28

HOW TO FAMILY-PROOF A RENTAL Toddlers always manage to get into something they shouldn’t – makeup, peanut butter, paint. Kids are basically little peace disturbers. I once put an entire container of Vaseline into my hair. If you are renting with a toddler, the basic safety latches and locks on cabinets, drawers and toilets are good, but here’s a couple more ways to avoid disaster with toddlers and their older siblings. PUT DOORKNOB COVERS ON BATHROOM DOORS If the door stays closed, toddlers (and pets) can’t get into anything hidden away in the bathroom — including, but not limited to, toilet water, makeup, powders, creams and garbage. We all know you can’t watch the wee one every second of every day, so this is the next best thing.

COVER FLOOR VENTS WITH TULLE Let’s all admit we’ve thrown something down the vent at some point in our lives. My sister admits she threw her nail polish down one. Avoid serious damage by covering your vents with tulle. By doing so air can still get by but trinkets cannot. INSTALL SHUT-OFF VALVES ON FAUCETS AND SHOWER HEADS While this is actually intended to promote water conservation, shut-off valves that can be placed on faucets and shower heads also limit flood opportunities because the water cannot be left running. BUY A DOOR STOP AND WALL PROTECTOR In my childhood home we used to ram our front door into the wall behind it all the time. I swear it felt like we made a doorknob-shaped hole in that wall every week. Buy a strong doorstop that can withstand a family of five busting into the house, and place a wall protector on the wall for when the doorstop fails.

BUY BEDDING ENCASEMENTS Buying a mattress and box spring protector won’t stop bugs from entering your home, but it will make it easier to deal with them should they find their way in. Spilled flour, coloured-on walls and noise complaints are bad-at-the-time events that become funny stories down the road, but flooded floors, torn-up stairs and poor credit are things that will haunt your renting future. Know how to help yourself and take a few precautions to make sure your home is protected against rental disasters.

HOW TO DOG-PROOF YOUR RENTAL I love dogs, but it’s true that they can cause a mess and literally destroy homes. Here’s how to make sure your landlord doesn’t regret their decision to be pet friendly. GATES AND CRATES If your pup seems to want to eat everything, make no mistake, he will eat the stairs and the walls. Crate training will not only protect your rental unit, but it will help with separation anxiety. Baby gates on stairs or across entrances is another way to protect your unit as it ensures your pup only goes where you want him to. Don’t buy one of those mesh crates if you have a spirited dog. My friend’s dog chewed through hers, took down the Christmas tree and chewed up a can of WD40 (at his boyfriend’s mom’s house). HOW TO FRAT-PROOF A RENTAL If you’re renting somewhere where bed bugs and

ULTIMATE LIFE HACKER Being a renter keeps you on your toes and your experience has served you well because today, you are the ultimate life hacker. It doesn’t matter what life throws your way, you’ve worked around your landlords “rules” and now you can find a solution to anything. 5. YOU ROLL WITH THE PUNCHES If you’re a new renter or an experienced renter, chances are you’re renting because you’re not sure where life is going, and you’re enjoying the ride. MOVING CAN BE a real chore. Between apartment searching, paperwork, giving notice and booking movers, you’re probably finding yourself impatient to get it all over with. As excited as you might be to get out of your current place, it’s a good idea to build in a few days of overlap between your old and new lease. Having extra time to clean, pack and tie up loose ends before turning in your keys can help cut down on moving day stress. But if your old lease ends right when your new lease starts, things can get a little tricky. According to the Landlord and Tenant Board of Ontario, you’re required to be moved out of your unit by 11:59pm on the last day of your lease, and you can take possession of a new unit at 12am on the first day of your lease. “It’s not ideal to schedule your

move on the exact closing date of your lease,” says Nicole McNeely, marketing manager at Park Property Management. If you’re timing your moves very closely together, make sure to talk to your both your old and new landlords. In some cases, they may have some flexibility to add a couple extra days on your lease or let you move in early, so you and your boxes won’t have to resort to couchsurfing at your great-aunt’s house. Also, If there’s currently a tenant living in the unit you’re slated to move into, it wouldn’t hurt to confirm with your new landlord that they’ll be gone by the time you’re planning on moving in, to avoid any unwelcome surprises. In the event you find yourself having to move out and in on the same day, it’s important to be organized. McNeely suggests getting in touch with the superintendent to book an elevator, if needed, and

coordinating with your moving company to ensure your belongings can go straight from your unit into the truck. This way, you’re not wasting time waiting for the movers to show up, or paying extra for your movers to wait around until the elevator opens up. Being organized also includes being fully packed and ready to go on the day of the move. McNeely estimates that it can take two people at least three days to pack a threebedroom home, so it’s important to give yourself enough time. You may also want to arrange for your mail to be forwarded to your new address, so you don’t miss the delivery of any important items. Even though moving may never be your idea of fun, keeping these things in mind can help make the process headache-free.

WHEN YOU MOVE your home or office, of course you want your belongings to arrive at their destination location safely, with nothing broken or misplaced. But there are other forms of safety and security that are also worth important consideration, whether you are moving yourself or hiring a professional mover. For example, Items are being transferred to and from the truck or vehicles. How can you be sure nothing will go missing when everyone who is dong the moving is in the house or apartment? At Two Men and a Truck - Canada, we dispatch movers in teams of three so that one person can be with the truck at all times, supervising the job and keeping an eye on your belongings. Should you be moving yourself, be careful running your own move with friends and family that those involved donâ€™t get so caught up in carrying items in and out they leave vehicles unattended. This is particularly important when moving out of and into an apartment building or condominium, when elevator trips may mean those carrying the items are gone from the moving vehicle for extended periods of time. Another safety aspect is ensuring that no one gets hurt during your move. Professional movers are trained to lift correctly and have strapping and other aides that help to move bulky items. We also understand fragility and treat delicate items with the 58

care they deserve. Untrained people who help you may inadvertently cause damage because they lack the know-how of how to move certain items. Movers have special packing materials, labels and loading/ unloading techniques in place to protect these cherished pieces. If you are planning a business move, it is wise to hire a professional mover and sit down with the move consultant to develop a plan. For example, long before the actual move, begin shredding unneeded documents to save time and money, and to avoid unwanted confusion at either end. Moving electronic storage equipment and servers can be tricky. Does your over have a strategy in place with information security as a goal? One approach may be to move critical servers in separate trucks so that all of the information would not be damaged in the unlikely event of a traffic accident. Speaking of sensitive or expensive cargo, whether moving home or office, itâ€™s a good idea to have specific items appraised and insured personally to protect them. Be sure

to create an inventory of these items, take photos of them and provide a copy to the mover. Another aspect of a move that clients may neglect is the ability of the drivers. People who choose a DIY move usually rent a truck or trailer, but are they actually skilled enough, experienced or even trained to drive the vehicle safely? If you are not used to driving with a heavy load in a vehicle it can be risky. A professional moving company provides trained drivers who are used to driving safely from point A to B with your belongings in tow. If you need to store items for a period of time, ask your mover if they have a storage facility that is climate controlled and insured against floods, fire, theft, and the like. A mover who offers full insurance with professional and bonded employees relieves you of the worry and stress of these kinds of safety and security issues.
