When I was 26 and freshly out of university. I wanted to explore Canada before deciding where to plant my roots. Traveling across the country was an amazing adventure. I saw a lot and learned a lot. It opened my eyes to the difference between living in a big city versus a small town. It highlighted regional differences and made me love living in Canada even more.

If I did it now I think I’d get more out of it with the Internet and great information about different neighbourhoods. I think my travels and decisions would have been much better planned! LOCATED NEAR DOWNTOWN MISSISSAUGA, the neighbourhood of

Erin Mills begins at Dundas St. West and Mississauga Road in the east, and ends at Ninth Line and Winston Churchill Blvd. in the north. Average to larger luxury suburban homes characterize this neighbourhood, known for wide streets and lawns catered towards families with children. Demand for housing has increased over the years, resulting in higher home prices. Residents consider Erin Mills a suburban paradise. Its population is steadily rising due to several housing developments in the area. A diverse

population lends to a variety of ethnic food choices, and fuels celebrations in Mississauga’s downtown core such as Carassauga, and the South Asian Heritage Festival. Erin Mills uses Mississauga’s MiWay bussing system that has 80 different routes covering 3,600 bus stops. Buying a pass or using a Presto Card would be the best option when using this service, as the fare is $3.50 per ride on its own. Erin Mills is close to several Go Train Stations including Streetsville Go, Clarkson Go and Erindale Go, all about 10-15 minutes from Erin Mills Town Centre. Erin Mills is designed for those

who enjoy a fairly affluent suburban lifestyle. Denser urban centres are not too far away, with Toronto, Mississauga’s downtown core and Oakville all nearby. But a vehicle is needed to leave the city or you’ll be relying on public transit alone. Activities within the boarders of Erin Mills are limited other than Erin Mills Town Centre along with a variety of restaurants. There’s a lot of construction going on in the area as it continues to be developed.

IT DOESN’T TAKE a certain type of person to rent their own space, but a renter does become a certain type of person. Here are five signs you’re a renter. 1. YOU’RE A HANDYMAN (SORT OF) Just like home owning, your rental will present minor annoyances like a continuous leaking kitchen sink and a squeaking oven door. But as an experienced renter, you’re able to decode any cricks and cracks in your home and do minor repairs yourself. If not, you have your landlord on speed dial. 2. WHY BUY WHEN YOU CAN DIY? Your rental is your home and naturally you want it to reflect your personality and taste. Yet, you always put off investing in good decor and furniture because you’re only renting. Never mind you’ve been only renting for the last 3 years. Instead, your Pinterest is filled with pins like “7 DIY projects for renters” and “28 decorating tricks to brighten up your rental home”. 3. YOU ROCK AT SMALL TALK You can only talk to your neighbours so many times throughout the year about the weather. Instead of living though the awkward silence of an 11 floor elevator ride, you’ve mastered the art of small talk. You can keep a lighthearted conversation going for at least 90 seconds and you’re able to get out of it once you’ve reached your door. “Nice talking to you Bob!” 4. ULTIMATE LIFE HACKER Being a renter keeps you on your toes and your experience has served you well because today, you are the ultimate life hacker. It doesn’t matter what life throws your way, you’ve worked around your landlords “rules” and now you can find a solution to anything.

5. YOU ROLL WITH THE PUNCHES If you’re a new renter or an experienced renter, chances are you’re renting because you’re not sure where life is going, and you’re enjoying the ride. is usually a cause for celebration. So what happens if your “fresh start” isn’t happening by choice, but instead by eviction? In Ontario, you can be evicted for non-payment of rent or regularly making late rent payments; disturbing your neighbours; causing excessive damage to the unit or building; committing illegal acts; exceeding the number of allowable tenants; or lying about your income at the time of application. Your landlord may also evict you if they intend to demolish or renovate the property to an extent that requires you to vacate; rent the unit to a member of their immediate family (or that person’s caregiver); or no longer rent it as housing. If your building comprises three or fewer residential units, and your landlord sells it to someone who asks you to vacate, you may also be evicted, but only after the end of your lease period. If you’re in any of these circumstances, here’s how the process works: Your landlord must first send you a Notice of Termination of your lease, outlining the specific reason(s) you are being asked to move. If the stated reason is something you can fix, like non-payment of rent, the notice will outline a specific timeline to correct the situation. If you are unable to address the wrong and will not agree to move, your

landlord must apply to the Landlord and Tenant Board for an eviction hearing, which you should definitely attend. But you can’t be forced to move until after the hearing happens. Should the Board rule against you, an official Eviction Order will be issued. You’ll want to make arrangements to find another place to stay quickly, even if it’s only temporary. Eviction orders are legally binding to all parties. Once an order has been issued against you, if you won’t leave voluntarily, your landlord must take that document to the Superior Court of Justice Enforcement (Sheriff’s Office) to schedule an eviction. The Sheriff then sends out a Notice to Vacate, instructing you to leave the rental unit on or by a specific date. If you’re not insane, aim to be gone when they come knocking. Hunkering down behind boxes, screaming “You can’t do this to me!” like one notorious Toronto tenant, probably isn’t going to satisfy the law. Nor will it impress your landlord, who must accompany the Sheriff to the eviction. But if you do decide to stage a “Hell no, I won’t go” protest, here’s what you can expect: The Sheriff will knock on the door, announcing who they are, and ask you to leave. Even if you don’t answer, your landlord will gain entry, as you no longer have any legal right to occupy. Don’t bother with the deadbolt and chain, either: locks must be changed in the presence of the Sheriff, so there’s usually a locksmith on hand. While it’s incredibly rare for a tenant to not leave peacefully, in such instances police will be called to remove you from the property. Once the lock is changed, if you haven’t got all your stuff out yet, you have 72 hours to do so. Your landlord has to make the unit accessible to you from 8 am to 8 pm for the next three days, so that you can retrieve your belongings. Beyond that point, anything that remains in the unit or building becomes your landlord’s legal property, and they can do whatever they wish with it. So if you’re facing a similar situation, you’ll want to be more than ready to go by the time the law arrives.
