PENNY WISE AND POUND FOOLISH WHEN PLANNING YOUR MOVE

There’s an old saying about being penny wise and pound foolish, which I see play out often in the moving industry.

When anticipating moving your home or business, you have the option to hire a moving company or do it yourself. Although some assume DIY is an economical way to go, hiring a professional mover can, in fact, save you time, stress and even money.

Think about it. By doing it yourself, you have to rent a truck, determine moving supplies and equipment as well as other incidentals. You need to transfer your possessions from Point A to B safely and efficiently, and find moving helpers.

Few are qualified or willing to get behind the wheel of a moving truck, so you will likely end up with a cargo van, which requires several trips. You ask a few friends or family members, or both, to help. You promise to reward them with cold beverages and pizza but, at the last minute, some of them do not show up. Those who do are probably not trained in the art of moving, including how to lift boxes without hurting their backs. There is much more chance of injury when people move themselves.

The most common reason why people opt for DIY is because they assume long-time, recognized, national-brand movers are

expensive. On the contrary. Relocation specialists offer skilled, trained, bonded, uniformed and experienced movers who have the same goal in mind as you do—to move your items as quickly and as safely as possible.

Many people don’t realize what it takes to move; you may be surprised at the cost and what it covers. Was getting your personal finances organized one of your New Year’s resolutions? If so, here are four tips to help you hit your goal and stay on track.

CREATE A BUDGET

There’s a reason why every article you’ll ever read about better managing your personal finances says to create a budget: It’s the only way to accurately understand your financial situation. Simply put, a proper budget tallies all of your expenses and all of your income. You can make one yourself or use an online tool.

CUT BACK ON UNNECESSARY EXPENSES

Once you have a clearer picture of your reoccurring expenses, you’ll be able to see areas where you might be able to cut back. Do you still have a landline that only ever seems to receive telemarketing calls? It might be time to cancel that. What about that list of streaming services and

other subscriptions you aren’t really using? And while that other resolution is admirable – you know, the one where you make space for exercise in your regular routine – if you’re not actually going to the gym, you may want to look into other options to cut out that monthly fee, such as working out at home or going for daily walks.

PLAN FOR THE UNEXPECTED

Sometimes spending money is a wise investment. Take insurance, for example. Vacationing is wonderful. But if you get sick or have an accident abroad and you don’t have travel coverage, you could face financial ruin. Similarly, health and life insurance are relatively small monthly investments that help protect your family in the event of illness, or worse.

“Insurance helps to provide a financial cushion for unexpected life expenses,” says Cathy Preston, vice-president of individual markets at RBC Insurance. “Having

that safety net gives peace of mind, especially during an emergency or a difficult time when finances should be the last thing on your mind.”

REVISIT YOUR INSURANCE POLICIES

Speaking of insurance, it’s a good idea to periodically review your various policies to make sure you’re properly covered. But also check to make sure you aren’t overpaying or paying for coverage you no longer need. If your job, for example, allows you to work mostly or entirely from home, you may be able to lower payments on your car insurance. Lower premiums may be available with some policies if you pay the full annual amount upfront, rather than making monthly payments. of environmental psychology in interior design

In our bustling world, the environment in which we live can influence our mental state and overall well-being. The field of environmental psychology delves into how our surroundings impact our thoughts, emotions and behaviours. Exploring the relationship between environmental psychology and interior design often leads to a rich tapestry of insights to light up the way to creating a living space that’s not just beautiful, but also healthier and more nurturing.

The concept

The core of environmental psychology includes the concepts of perception, cognition, behaviour, and emotion. These elements intricately weave together to shape our experiences within a given environment. How we interact with our surroundings, be it a cosy corner of our home

or the bustling streets of a city, is the result of a dynamic interplay between our internal state and external stimuli. For example, light, colour, materials and acoustics directly affect our senses and feelings and influence our emotions and functionality when we interact with elements or people in the space.

For a deeper insight into the relationship between environmental psychology and interior design, I spoke with Funmi Ade-Ojo, a practitioner in the field. When asked about her journey into interior design and the inter-relationship between environmental psychology and her work, Ade-Ojo says, “I’ve always been fascinated by the intersection between the science of design and its transformative power to enhance the human experience. Understanding the psychological nuances of how people interact with their surroundings has been integral to my approach as a designer.”

Mental health

The link between one’s environment and mental health is where interior design emerges as a potent tool to create spaces that enhance emotional well-being. From soothing colour palettes to thoughtful spatial arrangements, design choices can lift spirits and alleviate stress, possibly serving as a sanctuary amidst life’s chaos.

Ade-Ojo says, “I’ve witnessed firsthand the profound impact that well-implemented environments can have on mental well-being. One project that stands out is a galley kitchen that spanned 24 ft. The kitchen build tapped into neurodiversity, addressing the homeowner’s child’s ADHD, catering to the child’s need to pace up and down, while empowering him to function within the kitchen. In the same project, we utilized the placement of the east-facing windows to take full advantage of the rising sun, promoting the

circadian rhythm and well-being of the neurodiverse individuals that lived and operated in the space.”

Crafting spaces

Incorporating elements of the natural world into interior spaces evokes a sense of tranquillity and connection to the earth. Verdant foliage, cascading water features, and natural light infuse a room with vitality and serenity, offering respite from the rigours of modern life. Additionally, ample natural light, optimal ventilation and ergonomic furniture further elevate comfort and productivity, nurturing a harmonious balance between work and relaxation.

“I prioritize creating spaces with a heavy influence and impact on the end-user experience,” says Ade-Ojo. “Working with key elements such as layering colour within light fixtures to promote well-being and relaxation, and using biomimicry in texture, tones, patterns and the integration of natural products and biophilia to create a connection to the great outdoors.”

This approach suggests that aesthetics will no longer take

centre stage as the driving factor in how we design. Ade-Ojo says, “Automation, in specific movement into smart design, will evolve using biological senses that are monitored through AI in products such as sofas, responding to our biological needs; for example, feeling very hot, and sensors in the sofa sending a message to the thermostat to turn on the air conditioning.”

Paving the way forward

From virtual reality simulations that allow us to visualize spatial concepts to sustainable design practices that prioritize both ecological stewardship and human well-being, the landscape of design is poised

for evolution. When asked to discuss the collaboration between psychologists, designers and architects to create environments that focus on human well-being in residential design, Ade-Ojo says a multi-disciplinary approach to design has been ongoing in the commercial and healthcare spaces, and she expects to see it employed in residential spaces as people become more aware of the holistic approach.

RENTING VERSUS OWNING

FIVE REASONS RENTING IS BETTER

Here are five good reasons why renting is preferable to owning.

1. PROPERTY MAINTENANCE. Shovelling snow, raking autumn leaves, mowing the lawn –outdoor tasks are your landlord, superintendent or management company’s responsibility, unless your lease dictates otherwise.

2. FIXTURE REPAIR. If your shower stops running properly, it’s your landlord’s responsibility to call and pay for a plumber.

3. ACCESS TO AMENITIES.

Pools, gyms, party rooms and libraries are all fairly common features of upscale modern apartment buildings. In addition, high-density housing is often situated in the heart of the city, close to entertainment and shopping.

4. CHEAPER INSURANCE.

The key lies in mastering the art of the display. The following are some of my favourite tips for creating a thoughtful arrangement.

To add warmth and character to your shelving, incorporate natural wood for a warm and inviting feel or opt for metal accents for an industrial touch. The interplay of textures, such as woven baskets or ceramic vases, adds depth and visual interest to your display. The tactile experience of different materials enhances the overall appeal of your shelves, creating a space that feels livedin and personal.

2| Tell your story

Shelving is more than just a storage solution; it’s an opportunity to tell the story of the people who live in the space. Use your shelves to display personal items, cherished mementos and unique artifacts. Whether it’s a collection of travel souvenirs or family heirlooms, integrating personal elements on your shelves creates a narrative that resonates with everyone who enters the room. This not only adds character, but also fosters a sense of connection between you and your living space.

3| Distribution and repetition

EAST KILDONAN

A POPULAR SUBURB

East Kildonan is a popular suburb running west from the Red River to Panet Road on the east and again north from Oakland Avenue almost to Harbison Avenue in the south. Largely residential and stretching down Henderson Highway, E.K. residents constantly course downtown over the Disraeli Freeway.

Those who call East Kildonan home know the community by heart – this is a community with deep roots and a lot of long-time residents. They’ve gone to school here or started a family here. Some like the access to other parts of the city while

others are hard-core locals who wouldn’t venture past the bridge.

Life in this big neighbourhood is busy for families – and for traffic. Teens hang out after school near the malls while young parents play at the pool or stroll down the sidewalks. The many parks and pathways also attract young singles in the summer who bike or rollerblade with a friend or a pet.

Locals vary from Harley Davidson fans to Winnipeg Jets fans. Workingclass and middle-income families find housing fairly affordable here, especially east of Henderson Highway. Further west, along the river, bigger, more affluent homes have more seclusion and winding, seemingly exclusive roads. Lush, green groves and bustling community centres are on both sides of the road with many trails teeming with activity.

East Kildonan is home to two school divisions with 15 schools and three community centres – great for families with kids of all ages. There are many small parks and many acres for leisure activity in outreaching Kil-Cona Regional Park. The nearest hospitals are the Health Sciences Centre downtown and Concordia Hospital, plus the family health centre.

The most common ways to get around the main routes are by vehicle and bus. There are 14 bus routes and major roads to follow, but the side roads and pathways that follow the river and through residential blocks are ideal for foot traffic and cyclists. The airport is past the city centre, at least 13 kilometres away.

WHAT WILL YOU BE LOOKING FOR IN YOUR NEXT RENTAL?

How flexible are you about where you will live? Before you start a search, draft a list of your rental requirements.

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE RENT?

Aside from the basic monthly rent, there are less-visible costs that add up. Heat, electricity, water, cable television and Internet connection may not be included in the rent. Then there’s laundry, parking and transportation costs. Are there

appliances? Is there rent control in place and if not, what are the landlord’s plans for rent increases?

AFFORDABLE OR NOT?

As a general rule, your monthly shelter – including rent, electricity, heat, water, and municipal services – should be less than 30 per cent of beforetax household income. However, there will be circumstance and/or markets where it is difficult to find a rental that

accommodates this. Property insurance, parking, cable, telephone service, and Internet connection are not included in this calculation.

LOCATION

Prime locations cost more, but often offer advantages, like commuting time and expense. Proximity to work, school, public transit or other amenities helps pinpoint ideal locations, as are safety and proximity to family and friends.

Consider the following when evaluating a location:

• Crime level in the area.

• Distance to work and/or school, friends and family.

• Access to public transit and major roads.

• If you have children, are parks and play areas nearby? What about schools?

• Local amenities: entertainment, recreation facilities, shopping, library, restaurants.

• Traffic: are the roads busy? What about heavy traffic at rush hour or seasonal times?

• How are the noise levels in the area at different times of day?

HOUSING TYPES

Basement Apartment: A basement in a house that has been converted to an apartment may have a separate entrance, its own bathroom, kitchen, laundry room and heating system, or it may share those amenities with the rest of the home. Lowrise apartment buildings also have basement apartments.

Detached: Not attached to any other building, usually one or two storeys. Also called a single-detached or a singlefamily dwelling. A bungalow is a one-storey home and a

ranch-style bungalow is a large, spread-out one-storey house.

Walk-Up or Lowrise Apartment: Located in a building that does not have an elevator. Generally, monthly rent is less than monthly rent for a highrise apartment. Usually older buildings less than five storeys high with only a few conveniences, such as laundry rooms or storage lockers.

Highrise Apartment: A building that can range from six to 30 or more stories. Has elevators and often security systems to monitor entry and exit. May have laundry, sports and recreation facilities and other amenities. Usually has efficient electrical, heating, sewage and plumbing systems.

Rooming House: Rents rooms by the week or the month. Have a refrigerator to store food. Usually, roomers share the kitchen and bathroom(s). A single person is the most likely tenant for a rooming house.

Semi-Detached or Duplex: Is attached to another, similar house. The common wall is generally thick enough to prevent sound passing between the units. Semis can be either one or two storeys.

Single-Room Occupancy (SRO): Similar to a rooming house, but with a kitchen and a bathroom in each unit.

Townhouse or Row House: Several homes with common walls between each house, usually two storeys. A stacked townhouse is one townhouse sitting on top of another. Each townhouse is two storeys. CMHC

MOLLY MAID CLEANING TIPS FROM

1. SIMPLIFY YOUR CLEANING PRODUCTS

Limit cleaning products to a quality window/glass cleaner, all-purpose cleaner, tile/grout cleaner and a toilet bowl cleaner.

2. THE MOLLY MAID SYSTEM

Clean each room from the top to bottom starting on the left and moving right. This really is the quickest and most efficient way to thoroughly clean your home.

3. DUST FIRST, VACUUM SECOND

Any bits of dust or dirt that fall to the floor as you’re dusting will be picked up by the vacuum cleaner.

4. PET HAIR

Remove it from upholstery with a damp microfibre cloth or rubber glove.

5. MICROWAVE SPATTERS

Fill a cup with water and microwave on high for a few minutes. The steam will loosen any baked on food so you can easily wipe it clean.

6. DISH CLOTHS AND SPONGES

These are germ incubators. Wash dish cloths regularly, and microwave damp sponges on high for several minutes to kill bacteria.

7. DE-SCALE THE KETTLE

Fill the kettle half-and-half with white vinegar and water and leave it to soak overnight. Using an old toothbrush, dislodge any stubborn bits of lime scale. Rinse out thoroughly a couple of times and then boil some water to eliminate any odour of vinegar.

8. THE TOOTHBRUSH

Use a toothbrush for hard-toreach areas in the bathroom and kitchen (for example, around the soap holder, taps and drain).

We all deal with stress at various times in our lives, from looming deadlines at work to worrying about being able to pay our bills on time. Stress is a natural reaction to challenges in life, but it can also have significant impacts on our overall health

if it becomes long-lasting and we aren’t able to deal with it. Here are seven tips to help you alleviate the stress in your life.

GET ENOUGH REST

A good night’s sleep is essential for taking care of both your

physical and mental health. Most adults need seven to nine hours of sleep a night. Practising good sleep habits, like going to bed at a consistent time each night and keeping the room cool and dark can help you get a more restful sleep. If you’re a light sleeper,

consider using a white noise machine or fan to block out external sounds.

EAT WELL

Eating a variety of healthy foods supports your overall nutritional health and physical and mental well-being. A healthy eating pattern includes plenty of vegetables and fruits, whole grain and protein foods, and healthy fats instead of saturated fats. Healthy eating is more than the foods you eat, it is also the where, when, why and how

you eat. This can include taking time to eat without distractions, enjoying your food by creating a positive eating environment and using mealtime as a chance to connect with others.

GET YOUR EXERCISE

Regular physical activity has been shown to improve our ability to learn and problem solve, while also reducing the risk of developing dementia or other cognitive issues. If you’re not into jogging or hitting the gym, low-impact exercises like yoga or going for a walk are great ways to clear your mind and reduce your stress while getting your body moving.

UNPLUG YOUR DEVICES

The constant exposure to social media and the news can be overwhelming and have an impact on our mental health. If you find that it is negatively affecting you or adding additional stress to your life, consider reducing the amount of time you spend “doom scrolling” or taking a break from it altogether. Shutting down your screens at least an hour before bedtime can also help with better sleep.

SPEND TIME WITH LOVED ONES

If you can, prioritize some time to meaningfully connect with friends or family, whether in a group or one-on-one. If you are feeling stressed out, it can help to talk things through with someone you trust.

SET A SCHEDULE

Stress can make it challenging to keep track of the things we want to get done from day to day. Setting a regular schedule for things like mealtime, chores and exercise will help you remember important tasks and feel more in control of your life.

SEEK HELP WHEN NEEDED

Sometimes we aren’t able to sort things out on our own and need more support. If feelings of stress or worry are long-lasting and are having a negative impact on your daily life, know there is help. There are a number of free mental health supports that you can access at anytime, from anywhere.
