windows have been designed to let in light. Keeping out the elements came later. the modern word comes from the old norse word, vindauga, meaning “wind eye.” in old english, it was called eagduru, or “eyedoor.” Some of the earliest were paned with flattened pieces of animal horn, and plates of thinly sliced marble. Paper windows were once the norm throughout Asia. the romans were the first to use glass, known as fenestra in latin. our part in the story began in 1948, when Stan Dudeck opened up a small, family company called Paramount, specializing in custom wooden windows and doors. ome improvements can be looked at in two ways. One is the ROI view, the return on investment. If the improvement pays you back, it makes sense from an investment standpoint, and of course you will be glad you did it. The other view has more to do with feelings. If it makes you feel better about your home, then it’s worth it, even if you’ll never recover the cost, or, it doesn’t add a penny of value. This viewpoint is especially relevant if you’re planning on staying in your home for many years to come.

Needless to say, most renovation projects serve both views. They add value to your home and provide you with the intangible happiness that comes from owning a beautiful, well-appointed abode.

What are some projects that provide you with strong ROI and homeowner happiness? There are too many to cover in the space designated for this editor’s note. However, I will touch on a few. f you’ve ever watched HGTV chances are you’ve seen Sarah Richardson working her design magic. With four hit shows, Sarah’s House, Design Inc., Sarah 101 and Room Service, Sarah Richardson has become one of the most celebrated TV designer personalities. For over ten years Sarah has been sharing her design expertise and captivating audiences with her ability to transform average spaces into functional and unique environments that are visually stunning. We caught up with Sarah between her busy schedule to have her share some advice on completing a successful and stylish renovation.

Q

With fall just around the corner, what trends are you most excited about?

A Fall in Canada always offers a terrific chance to get cozy and turn inwards. I love to pull out nubbly textures and rich fabrics that instantly add a sense of warmth and luxury to home. Blankets, throws, velvet pillows and lots and lots of candles are a wonderful and easy way to counteract the drop in outside temperatures!

What are some budget friendly ways to transition a space from one season to the next?

A Transitioning through the seasons isn’t so much about re-decorating as it is about rotating what you have. I preferred a crisp and streamlined, unadorned “less is more” look in the summer, but come

fall, I love to dive into my cupboards and rediscover all the cozy bits and pieces that have been tucked away.

Your love of colour is evident with your Para paint collection. What steps do you take when deciding on a colour palette for a space?

A My first step if it’s a total room project is to start with a jumping off point of inspiration. This could be a patterned rug or a piece of fabric with a variety of colours that epitomizes the look and feel I’m trying to achieve in the room. Next I pull together a broad collection of fabrics that have the same hues, and then it’s easy to build a scheme and select paint colour based on the inspiration. I love the combination of a variety of paint colours in a home and treat every wall as a new opportunity to transition to another shade.

In your hit show Sarah’s House you go through an entire home renovation. What has been the most important lesson you have learned from overtaking a project that of that scale?

A The most important focus is always about total scope.

It’s imperative to me to be able to accomplish a fully realized vision every time and that means top to bottom and inside to outside have to receive the same level and quality of finish.

I don’t want one room to be a showpiece while the next is barren and empty, so I juggle and prioritize every step of the way to ensure that I can make it to the finish line. Doing an entire house requires discipline with decision making and spending, and lots of organization to bring it in on time and budget. No detail is ever too small, and you always need to have the end goal in your focus to keep on track. I can’t tell you it’s a cinch every time, but if you get to live in a home you love, it’s all worth it!

Kitchen renovations are as popular as they are expensive.

What kitchen element do you believe should take the largest portion of the renovation budget, and what should use the least?

A I don’t think there’s a single element as everything needs to be in line and of similar quality. Expensive appliances and cheap cabinetry make no sense to me, nor does the opposite approach. If you are doing a mid-level reno, keep that in mind every step of the way and see how far you can stretch your dollar to get what you want. Good flow, layout and functionality are top concerns for me as the kitchen must work on a daily basis.

What room do you have the most fun designing in a home?

A Don’t make me choose! Each and every room in every home is a new, fresh challenge due to the combination of architecture, exposure, location, client and personality. I enjoy the process of creating a unique expression in every project I tackle and am always inclined to think my current project is the most fun. I live in the moment and am always looking ahead!

What area of the home do you feel has hidden functionality that is often overlooked?

A Every room can be more and work better if it has good storage and is designed to work for a variety of functions to accommodate the needs of an entire family. Instead of living only in your kitchen, I challenge you to think about how you can get more out of some of the less used spaces in your home by making them destinations that attract your family. If you aren’t using a room often enough, think about why, and then try to devise a new plan that really works for your lifestyle.

Where do you look for home dew cor inspiration?

A Everywhere! In nature, in magazines and books, in museums and art galleries, in my daily life with my kids, and always when I travel. Having the opportunity to escape from my everyday routines and see things from a new perspective, or notice elements that seem new and fresh to me keeps my creative juices going.

What has been the most rewarding design project you have worked on in your career?

A Whether it’s for me personally or for a client, the best projects are the ones which create a positive experience for the people who inhabit them. I’m driven to keep on doing what I do by the positive feedback we get and knowing that our design approach and our investment of creativity has resulted in the homeowners living happily in their space.

Knowing that we can make a difference in how clients feel about their home is very rewarding. I don’t want to create rooms that are simply beautiful, I want them to be inviting, engaging, comfortable, livable, and enduring!

What is your dream design or renovation project?

A I’d love to have carte blanche to design a small hotel in an exotic destination that would be unique and chic and elegant, and allow people to come and stay and experience my take on design first hand, instead of just watching it on TV. ocT - nov 2012 home décor and renovations 11

That’s why they’ve sequentially been the owners of two previous century-old homes before purchasing their present Riverview home that the couple agrees is a ‘keeper.’

Having lived in character homes before, Reed and Suzie were wellprepared for the inevitable renovations that needed to be done in this gem of a home that was loaded with potential.

Remaining true to the home’s stately pedigree was important but the couple also wanted to inject a contemporary vibe with, of all things, hits of stainless steel; what the couple envisioned as a ‘spaceship’ in the Canadian Shield.

“We wanted it to feel like the Canadian Shield but with contemporary pictured aBove elements,” says Reed. Other contemporary touches are incorporated into a series of glass-fronted display cabinets that punctuate the expanse of solid face maple doors with stainless steel trims that unify the overall effect.

Reed credits Ron Dyck, owner of Hawthorne, for coming up with a great idea for a valance on either side of the chimney which was really important for the couple to preserve. “It was a yellow brick chimney from a coal burner in the basement and it was original to the house.”

“Since the house is 100 years old we wanted to inject elements that were ancient in terms of pre-technology like granite and stone. We wanted these old elements to be juxtaposed against the stainless steel range hood and the induction range because we are really into that kind of eclectic look. Overall, it’s a really neat combination of light and heavy along with the feeling of old and new. It makes for a really wonderful contrast.”

The renovation also included adding yards and yards of functional counterspace, a feature sadly lacking in the previous kitchen, along with lowering the kitchen windows for a better view of the backyard herb garden.

Chris Dyck, a 4th generation family member and Hawthorne employee, comments, “Anytime you’re installing a kitchen into an older space, there are always going to be challenges, both in design and in working with houses which have shifted and moved over the years. With 66 years of experience behind us, we’ve got the knowledge and creativity to solve any problems that may arise.”

colour is a multi-billion-dollar

industry. It is also the most powerful aspect in the design world. It can change the way you’re feeling, stimulate thought, increase your appetite – it’s really quite phenomenal.

You’re drawn to colours that you like when you’re shopping for clothing because you know you’ll feel good when you’re wearing them, and the same thing goes for interiors. Statistics show that most people spend about 90 per cent of their time inside, a large portion of which is in their own home. If you live with colours that make you feel good, it will make for a better quality of life.

Deciding which direction to take in terms of colour is where many people tend to panic. My advice is to look through several magazines, tear out the pages that have elements you like, put them all in a folder and, once you have at least 20 different style images, analyze the colours that appear most often. This is a great way to get inspired and decide on colours for your own space.

Paint Particulars I am very particular about colour selection and when I design a space, I like to keep the walls through any open areas in a consistent hue. My entire place is painted in Benjamin Moore’s OC-23, Classic Grey. It’s a very soothing colour that really adapts to the other colours around it – like a chameleon. It’s a nice hue to wake up to in the morning and to fall asleep to at night. The tone of it varies throughout the day with the amount of light; it’s brighter in the day and much richer in the evening.

When you’re choosing your paint colour, remember: it’s just paint. It’s not permanent and can be easily changed if you’re not happy with it.

People always forget that you can get sample cans from the paint store.

Pick up a maximum of three different testers that you like, paint sections of each on different walls (or paint large sheets of white Bristol board and stick them up), and live with them for a few

days. (If you give yourself more than three options, trust me, you’ll never decide).

Then narrow it down to your favourite two, and then finally pick the one.

Get Used to It Choosing a colour palette should never be an impulsive decision; you should take time deciding so you know you’ll be comfortable with it. Once you finally do paint the walls, you might still wonder if you selected the right colour. However, keep in mind that you have to give yourself the chance to live with it.

Big changes take time to adapt to. For instance, if you’re going from burgundy to off-white you can’t expect to get used to it within the first few hours.

No-commitment Pieces Pillows, accessories and other accent pieces give you the chance to have fun with colour, since they’re ‘non-committal.’ I’ve used hints of blue and green throughout my interior. It’s nice to have your entire residence consistent in terms of colour because then you can move pieces from one room to the next and you’ll never have to worry about making sure it coordinates.

Just remember that choosing colours for your home won’t happen overnight. It’s a process that starts with getting inspired; the rest will fall into place. It should be fun, not painful. And if you find that you really can’t do it on your own, it’s probably time to hire a good designer to do it for you.

This issue of Renovations magazine is always very popular because readers see what has been done in other houses and then develop ideas of what could be in their home. These are not displays or artists’ conceptions, but rather real projects completed by professional renovators in homes in nearby neighbourhoods. That same creativity can be applied to our own homes as we pursue our renovation plans. I encourage everyone to study these renovation projects carefully and then think about what could be done in your own home.

the clients have a lovely home in a wooded area of the city but they wanted more room. the resulting plans had solutions for all of their concerns and addressed even more. a beautiful huge window in the new kitchen/eating space takes advantage of the lovely green view of the yard. a spacious walk-in pantry off the kitchen and a butler’s pantry serving area enhance the storage and serving functions for the entire area. on the second fl oor, the original three piece bath became an ensuite with a walk in shower. the third bedroom was transformed into a new four piece bath and a large laundry/storage room. the third bedroom was added over the kitchen addition area.

this addition addresses the issue of a poor entry with a new entry closet space that is enormous. a three piece bath helps with the problems of teenagers and only 1 shower, while the home offi ce gives the professional parents a place to escape and work. the family room that is opened up to the existing kitchen & dining adds to the spacious feel of the whole home and provides the extra living and entertaining space that the homeowners were seeking. the exterior of the home was clad with cement board panels and aluminum trim, with the covered entry adding outdoor living space and a focus to the entry.

this home was located in the heart of an established neighborhood that many people look to live in. unfortunately, at only 780 sq.ft., the home was just too small by today's standards to accommodate a modern family. so, our client asked us to do a very large addition, more than doubling the square footage of the home. the addition of almost 1200 sq. ft. (200 sq.ft. in the back and almost 1000sq.ft. on the second fl oor) gave them the room they needed to make this house their home in the perfect neighborhood.

this home was located on a very large beautiful river lot. unfortunately, at 1,012 sq.ft. the home was too small for today's modern family. so, our clients had us add an entire second fl oor to this former bungalow, bringing the home up to 2,025 sq.ft. the additional space was enough for us to create two over sized guest bedrooms and a huge master suite including large walk in closet, 5 piece ensuite with heated fl oors and a bedroom with sitting area and second fl oor balcony.

this story and a half was converted to a full two story. the main fl oor was entirely renovated to suit the new layout as designed. the exterior fi nishes of the entire outside of the existing home were removed and all walls were fi nished in matching vinyl siding. a nicely detailed front porch was added which tied in nicely with other porches in the neighborhood. three bathrooms were included in the renovation; two upstairs and one downstairs. two alcoves were added on the south side of the main fl oor to increase the fl oor space of the adjoining rooms.

the objective of this renovation was to expand existing indoor/outdoor living space. a spacious new great room was built, complete with Hickory fl ooring, and fl oating reclaimed wood shelves. a large double sided fi replace between the living room and 4 season sun room was the jewel in the crown. in keeping with the contemporary feel, a state of the art home automation system was installed. a roomy back entrance and exercise room replaced the old existing deck. the new master bedroom was complemented by a spacious walk in closet, and ensuite. Heated fl oors, fl oating vanity and custom tile shower were all selected with relaxation in mind.

the objective of this renovation was to create more year round livable space. by building a 300 sq.ft. great room addition directly off of the kitchen, we were able to create the additional open concept living space that the family was looking for. espresso cabinets, quartz counter tops, and stainless steel appliances made the functional space eye catching as well. additional custom touches such as a Hansgrohe kitchen faucet, daltile Metal effects kitchen fl oor tile, and a red 40 linear fi replace complete with a custom universal slate surround ensured the “Wow!” factor that the clients were looking for.

the original home, built in the 1960’s, was compartmentalized with small cramped rooms. the new design required completely demolishing four rooms and creating three luxurious spaces. the new master bath features double sinks set into a granite counter, a wall hung bidet toilet with heated seat and automatic open & close. the enormous walk in shower has an iPod dock, internal speakers and aromatherapy steam unit, lighting, a rain shower function and three body sprays. a two-person jetted tub with convenient wine platform features warmed back rest and Wi-fi stereo. to set the mood of the room a wall mounted fi replace was set across from tub.

this client wanted to upgrade their tired ensuite. the wish list included a large shower, separate tub, his and hers vanities, and a walk in closet. custom oak vanities with reed glass doors, heated travertine fl oors, and quartz countertops were all selected to create a calm and tranquil atmosphere.

Hand painted swirls decorate the room and were replicated onto the shower glass surround offering a unique and eclectic design. the jetted free standing tub offers the perfect fi nishing touch.

our customers were tired of their 1970’s monochromatic exterior and wanted to bring in character to match the surrounding area. the clients wanted to accent the existing characteristic profile of the exterior and blend the existing stucco colour with the new design.

However, we needed to address hidden problems; a leaky chimney, wall plumbness, before moving forward. exterior features included custom stained cedar trims, cultured stone accents, maintenance free vinyl shakes, new asphalt shingles with ice and water shield, prefi nished soffit, fascia and eaves, and accent lighting. all of these helped provide our clients with a charming character exterior.

this 1940’s house exterior was dated and needed someone to see the potential. the customer loved their neighborhood and property and wanted to invest. our client’s number one concern was to have a renovator who would work directly with them from start to fi nish. this architecturally country inspired front porch is a simple idea but it had very challenging details that included relocation of a gas meter, removal of solid concrete steps, piles, a cedar deck, a stick framed roof, cultured stone accents, electrical, a hidden motorized lift with a concrete pad, dentil blocks and expanded cellular Pvc tapered maintenance free columns.

this home had been a rental property for 20 years and it showed. our clients not only wanted the home's style to be updated they also wanted to address the lack of energy effi ciency. We completely removed all the stucco, windows and doors. the entire exterior was insulated with 1.5" extruded polystyrene insulation and all new triple pane windows and energy star doors were installed. We then fi nished the exterior with a combination of stucco and stone for a beautiful and energy effi cient home.

aside from the exterior of the home being outdated and unattractive, the shell of the home was in desperate need of energy saving enhancements. all of the siding was removed as were the windows and doors. new triple pane casement windows were installed along with energy star doors. the exterior was clad with 1.5" extruded polystyrene insulation before being fi nished with the beautiful stucco and stone fi nish styled to fit the historic neighborhood in which the home is located. a two level deck was also added at the rear with the master bedroom access to the upper level. this was a complete renovation with energy effi ciency in mind.

the clients have a lovely home in a wooded area of the city with a wonderful large screen porch which leads into the back yard. their existing kitchen and eating area was tight, too small for their lifestyle. they had a desire for an expanded kitchen to provide better spaces for storage, baking and entertaining. the new kitchen has an abundance of upper cabinets, a wonderful scenic view of the back yard, loads of drawers and long stretches of cambria stone quartz countertops. the custom fi nish on the cabinets blends with the feel of the traditional home, and the butler’s pantry between the kitchen and dining room is an added convenience for large dinners or social gatherings. the walk in pantry provides a vast amount of additional storage for food, pop, countertop appliances and large items.

an extensive addition/renovation was done on this home with no plans to change the kitchen. as the project came closer to completion, the decision to recreate the kitchen was made. the existing eating area was seldom used, as their dining room table is used for everyday meals. the kitchen was small with minimal counters and no drawers. the design that evolved is one that took into consideration the way the family lives, the need for quick meal space and storage requirements. there is a tremendous amount of counter space, pot drawers, garbage & recycling center along with a large peninsula that serves as an eating area and serving buffet for family gatherings. the sink on the peninsula allows for views out the patio door and through the dining room to the expanse and greenery of Wildwood Park.

this 1976 home featured dated aesthetics and small, cramped rooms that didn’t fit with the family’s active lifestyle. the decision was made to open up the living room, dining room and kitchen to facilitate a smooth fl ow and better functionality. the focal point is the kitchen. the dark wood island was designed to be like a piece of furniture to create a warm gathering place. the custom cabinetry features glass fronts and provides a perfect separation between the kitchen and dining room, but still lets enough light shine through for an airy, open feel.

the homeowner’s house was newer and had modern details throughout. However, when it came to the kitchen, the details were not at the same standard. the customer’s main need was to have a place to entertain and to open up the kitchen. We cut a wall and created a two-tier breakfast bar, which opened up to the dining room, allowing for entertaining. custom maple raspberry cabinets with soft close doors and drawers, solid granite countertops, under-cabinet lighting, ceramic tile subway backsplash with a stainless steel accent, and upper lit accent cabinets created the fi nishing touches on this elegant kitchen design.

the client loved their 100 year old heritage home.

However, the kitchen was plain and outdated. to ensure a seamless transition, we needed to utilize and incorporate in our design existing heritage materials. We reshaped a giant plaster custom curved stair bulkhead and increased storage space along with incorporating a new craft area without changing the size of the kitchen. We used the following products to ensure quality and to retain the home’s heritage: custom maple cabinets with pullouts, valance lighting, under-cabinet, subway tile backsplash, a solid surface countertop, vinyl fl ooring, reinstalled and customer fabricated existing casings and bases.

this large, 3 season sun room was designed with relaxation in mind. White stained vertical pine provides a sleek modern edge to the overall warmth of the room, while the fl oor to ceiling Weather Wall creates a panoramic view of the pristine back yard. a gas fi replace complete with full height quartz surround creates a warm and inviting focal point to the space. Matching luxury vinyl tile spills through custom bi-fold doors into the custom kitchen beyond. custom ash cabinets, quartz countertops and new stainless appliances provide the perfect back drop to this exquisite 3 season addition.

the renovation needs for this main fl oor were to have a proper mudroom/entry that did not come right into the living space, a larger front entry, and more rooms for entertaining. the resulting main fl oor design now features a music room in the front corner. the front entry was vastly improved with a large closet and room to greet guests. a buffet with built in cabinetry and wine/beverage fridges was installed. the new second fl oor contains three bedrooms and a full bathroom for the kids, and a large master suite. a covered front porch for park viewing was built on the front of the home and the entire exterior is maintenance free.

the desire for a mudroom with storage and large bedrooms for all the kids, along with space for the parents and entertaining led to the plan that was created. the addition is dropped one step but 9’ 10” ceilings were achieved over the main living portion by raising the master bedroom on the second fl oor. the master suite has a gargantuan walk in closet, an ensuite with a free standing glass shower, soaker tub, double vanity and enclosed toilet room and a separate walk in, with a separate entry to the main hall. the entire exterior of the home was stripped, insulation added to the existing structure and stucco, stone and cement board siding installed, along with aluminum soffit, fascia and eavestrough for a truly no maintenance exterior.

this home had been a rental property for almost 20 years. the new owners wanted to take advantage of an amazing river lot and create a dream home in a dream location. the home was gutted down to the studs, re-levelled by almost 6" and then rebuilt using the highest environmental standards while creating an incredible modern home. absolutely nothing was compromised with this home.

this renovation was one of the most challenging that we have ever completed. our client wanted the home to be brought up to and beyond today’s codes and modern style of living. from this home’s humble beginnings, we were able to create an incredible space that meets and exceeds all of the modern family’s demands for style and function while tackling all of the structural improvements that were required. this project was incredibly demanding but looking back, we managed to create a beautiful home that respects the environment and will stand the test of time without compromising the customer’s budget or needs.

awesome- that’s what i thought when i saw these plans. the client and designer had worked for months to achieve their style without sacrifi cing function. starting with a 1,200 sq. ft. bungalow, the goal was to signifi cantly increase the style, space and comfort of the home. natural woods, stone and earth tone colors were to be the primary fi nishes. through plenty of coordination with the designers the project moved steadily to a spectacular fi nished product.

the main fl oor of this home was entirely gutted to the ‘bones.’ all mechanical systems were upgraded to modern codes. Problem areas with second fl oor mechanical were also addressed. some structural issues were also brought up to code. new windows and a new patio door were installed. insulation values were upgraded with r14 batts and 1” styrofoam on the inside. all new kitchen cabinetry with granite tops were installed. new fl ooring consisted of a combination of pre-fi nished hardwood and tiles.

first and second fl oor additions and a large renovation of existing fl oor space allowed these homeowners to create the home they always dreamed of. lots of large windows allow natural light to fl ood into the new spaces. the extensive kitchen allows for large dinner parties and many nights entertaining friends. a large dining room facilitates more formal gatherings. Heated fl oors, curbless custom tile and glass shower and pedestal tubs are just some of the features in the new ensuite and the new main bathroom on the second fl oor.

Pre-fi nished cherry fl oors and large polished marble tiles cover literally every square foot of fl oor space.

the objective of this renovation was to remodel the tired house, providing a more functional layout and modern design. gut the house and start over. Walls were removed and the new kitchen layout designed with functionality and entertaining in mind. White cabinets, black granite counters, and stainless steel appliances provide a beautiful, modern contrast, and really make the space pop. Walls were spray foamed and triple pane windows installed. luxurious 24" x 24" tile in the front foyer set the perfect tone for this breath taking design. a custom solid oak stair case was installed and matching hand scraped hardwood fl oors were installed throughout.

ome and Renovation Masters (HRM) is still going strong in a Winnipeg renovation market that shows no signs of slowing down. Since opening in 2008, the company’s quality work has distinguished itself among its peers. “We’re busier, doing more work and our projects are getting larger all the time,” says Dave Stewart, President.

With another year in business, Dave cites referrals from satisfied customers as a strong indicator of success. Dave attributes the consistent quality of HRM’s work for its rising prominence. “Also, when we give people quotations, we stick by our numbers. We give people very detailed and exact

living five years ago. “We already had a cottage and didn’t want to have to double up on the maintenance,” says Ryan. The couple knew that condo living would liberate them from snow shoveling, grass cutting and other labour-intensive chores, but renovation issues, unfortunately, were not one of them.

footage. The only thing we didn’t like is the fact that it wasn’t updated by the previous owners,” says Ryan. “Everything was original to the bathrooms with old vinyl flooring and dated vanities and needed to be brought up to a current style.” That’s when Ryan and Doris met with Randy Mandelik of WC Potts to launch into a fullscale renovation to their master ensuite and guest bathroom.

Randy recommends thermofoil as a good choice in the bathroom since it works well with the extra humidity and provides an easy wipe-down.

Meanwhile, Randy Mandelik, bathroom designer and Joe Kuncl and his installation crew were concentrating on the mechanics of making the bathrooms function as they should. Powered by the existing wiring from the former whirlpool tub, higher wattage heating coils were installed underfoot not only to warm the tiles but also to serve as the main source of radiant heat in the space.

When you place heating cables directly on concrete, you wind up heating the concrete, but by putting down the KerdiBoard, more heat is drawn up to the tiles which is very important since the heated floor is the main source of radiant heat in the space.”

The guest bathroom underwent a significant transformation with the removal of the old bathtub for a dedicated walk-in shower. “ We had to use new Schluter inline shower system due to the position of floor drain which had to remain where it was according to condo requirements, says Randy. “The system consists of a very neat trough drain that ensures the shower will function well while meeting the condo guidelines.”

“Concrete floors present more challenges than a normal wooden floor in a house,” adds Randy. “We have to work

with the existing pipes and cables so it requires more thought on where to position things to be in line with the electrical codes. The vanity, toilet and free-standing tub in the master ensuite, for example, are located against a wall ledge that houses the condo’s plumbing.”

Working on condo renovations does not have the same free rein as in a house, informs Randy, “because there are fixed construction issues that need to be followed and the jobs can often involve longer time frames due to limited elevator access and daytime work hours.

All in all, Ryan and Doris are very happy with the combination of products and service that WC Potts provided for their condo bathroom renovations. “Randy and his crew were very easy to deal with. They were very helpful and offered lots of suggestions throughout the installation. Our condo was left clean and spotless at the end of the day and both the bathrooms were done in just two weeks. We’re very happy we chose them.”

Human development drives change to the extent that lifestyle experiences could be considered the strongest force behind design development. A space & a place for everything

by Hellen Buttigieg Whether you have a sprawling home with plenty

of room or a cosy place that has little in the way of extra space, you need to create a system so that your home functions in a manner that accommodates your lifestyle needs. And whether you live large or small, chances are there’s a favourite spot in your home that sees more than its fair share of action. It’s a corner of the sofa you curl up in, or a spot at the breakfast counter that has a pile of things you want to get to ‘when you have a minute’ that could use a little bit of help. Without designated spaces you’re forever tucking things away that don’t have a real home – and wasting far too much time trying to remember where and when you go to retrieve them. Develop a place for each activity you do and space to keep those items that go with it to add some organization to your home – and your life!

Everyone needs a home office. Are you using your kitchen or dining room table as an office? It can be frustrating and time consuming to constantly have to pack up your papers and bring them out again. Whether you’re an entrepreneur, a student or a homemaker, you need a space in your home specifically designated for processing paperwork. Although it would be ideal to have a room devoted entirely to this purpose, you can also use an armoire in the family room that closes up when not in use, or a closet that has been refitted with a countertop and drawers. You’ll also need good lighting, a comfortable chair, and a functional filing system.

Where did I put the... Have you ever stored a special item in a safe place and then forgotten where you put it when you need it three months later? A simple solution is to create a document in MS Word or a similar program on your computer to record the location of seldom-used articles. Use the ‘find’ feature in Word (located in the Edit drop-down menu) to retrieve the information quickly within the document. Be sure to name the document something obvious so you can find it on your computer.

Name that room. Rooms that don’t have a specific purpose often become dumping grounds for clutter. Before you begin de-cluttering, go through your home, room by room, and determine how you want to use each space. Identify which items support the purpose of the room and which ones should be moved elsewhere. Keep a few boxes handy so you can easily transport smaller items to their appropriate rooms.

Everything needs a home. Whenever you bring a new item into your home, immediately find a permanent place for it to live. To help you determine the best spot for it, ask yourself what else is like it, and where (and how often) you will use it. Store similar things together and store items near their place of use. Items used daily should be placed in the most accessible areas (within arm’s reach), whereas seldomused items can be stored in out-of-the way spaces. Keep a label maker handy to label drawers, shelves and containers so you don’t have to rely on your memory when you need to find something quickly.

What did I do with that manual? Did you add new appliances and electronics to your collection recently? Staple the receipt and warranty to the instruction manual and tape it to the bottom of the item so it’s easy to find if you need to refer to it. For portable items like cell phones and MP3 players, store the manuals in an accordion file by category.

Where did I leave my keys? The most common excuse for lateness? “I couldn’t find my keys”. It’s hard to be successful if you can’t even leave your home. Save yourself the frustration and embarrassment by simply making an extra set of keys and keeping them in a special place. Give another set to a relative or neighbour in case of emergency. Create a home for your keys and always place them there when you arrive. You can use a bowl, a small basket or a hook. If all else fails, attach a beeper to your keys that you can activate when they go missing.

described as a year of contrasts, defying anything in the middle. Would this mean pairing dark colour choices with neutrals, brights with pastels?

Peggy van allen Yes, definitely the combination of dark with light, muted with bold but also contrasting textures and sheens.

Sl How does this translate to incorporating these trends into your home?

PVA Using the Vestiges trend as an example, you could use one of the more moody colours such as Woodgate but then bring in accents with accessories or furniture in Leek and Botticelli.

Sl These contrasts are divided into four colour stories: Phenomena, Dialects,

Vestiges and Curated. Tell me which colour story is your favourite and why.

PVA I really like Vestiges with its dark, moody story but I also like the influences behind the Phenomena trend. I think this trend which looks at the art of math and

science is one that we will see continuing past 2013. The colours are vivid and clear and really uplift us from the more muted and grey colours that we have been using.

It’s a counter-balance as we tire of the frugal and safe recession-era colours.

Sl In reference to the Dialects colour story, what international influences are

the strongest right now in design and colour?

PVA We are actually seeing more of the local cultural influence in this trend. Instead of the melting pot, it is about communities of people who celebrate what makes them different from other tribes while bringing the knowledge of more worldly influences and celebrating them on a local level. There is also a strong African influence that we are showing with the visuals in this trend -- rich, vivid colours and patterns.

SL What Pratt & Lambert colour choices would you suggest for a West-facing

room? What colours are recommended for an East-facing room?

PVA This is a great question that we are asked often, and we actually have a callout on PrattandLambert.com that discusses colour theory and behaviour. Western facing rooms have light that is strong and warm, especially in the afternoon hours.

The light can change dramatically throughout the day, so use neutral colours for a more balanced feeling. Eastern light windows that face east will generally give a room a softer light. The light will be at its strongest and warmest in the morning, becoming more muted throughout the day. A mix of warm and cool colours will help balance out the changes in light.

SL What paint colour for fall 2012 do you think sums up the season?

PVA Corsican 28-13 is our pick for colour of the year.

SL What trends do you forecast for spring/summer 2013?

PVA We don’t really break our forecast into seasons. Paint colours and home decorating are typically not as fast-changing as fashion trends. While overall trends are not changing in a big way each year, the nuances and stories around the trends are communicated much more. I think this is due to the Internet and specifically social media. Colour awareness and “love of colour” are big right now and marketers are capitalizing on this by using colour to sell all products. Consumers are craving colour and wanting to use it economically which makes paint such a great option for updating a home’s palette.

PVA Oh, this is like asking which one is my favourite child -- I can’t pick! I do like Leek 21-27 from Vestiges and Tide Pools 21-10 from Phenomena as being directional and key for 2013.

Janine Druery What are your five favourite colours (the ones you tend to gravitate toward) for painting a home?

Sharon Grech When I am looking for an overall backdrop for a home or room I tend to gravitate to these five colours: Revere Pewter HC-172 it’s a perfectly warm grey, anything but drab! Sophisticated as a backdrop to deep woods and natural stone finishes and coordinates beautifully with any accent colour in the rainbow!

Delaware Putty CC-230 this is my go-to for a pale, warm khaki tone – it works well with pale woods and creamy white trim. Its green undertone gives it a little more life than a beige or a grey.

Oat Straw AF-340 oat straw is deceiving on a small chip, but in a room with natural sunlight it radiates and at night feels like candlelight. A perfect choice for a space with a mix of woods, heavier textiles and earth tones. (Currently this is the wall colour of my main floor.)

Pashmina AF-100 a sophisticated, truly chameleon grey, Pashmina can shift from a slight mauvey tone to a green tone depending on its context. At night especially, it 52 home décor and renovations oct - nov 2012

Gray Wisp CC-670 a cool, refreshing blue-grey, this neutral doesn’t disappear into the backdrop. With a hint of green in the formula to warm it up, it isn’t too sweet or too cool, so plays well in a living space, hallway or bedroom.

JD What do you think about deep, rich tones in a home?

SG I love the drama and romance of rich colours used in a home. Outfitted with a variety of cosy textures and interesting patterns, a deep wall colour is the perfect finishing touch. But the colour palette has to suit the space, the contents and the owners’ personality. It’s not enough to just “like” a colour, it’s important that the colour plan reflects the “feel” you want when you enter the room.

JD Which paint colour is the hardest to get right?

SG Surprisingly, I find whites and off-whites the most difficult to choose correctly.

Even a white with just “white” in the formula will appear different under different lighting conditions. Benjamin Moore has hundreds of whites to choose from, each with a different undertone, some slightly pink, yellow, green, blue and everything in between! So especially to the untrained eye it can be a shock when the colour is on the wall. I always recommend buying a small colour sample to test out first.

JD What are your favourite colours in general – for instance, to wear?

SG My personal favourite fashion colours are rusty orange, olive green and grey. I keep promising myself NOT to buy one more grey item, but it’s so hard because just like a grey wall, grey attire allows room for colourful accessories, which I love!

JD Do you believe colour dictates mood in a home?

SG Colour absolutely dictates the mood in a home. Colour is a very emotional choice, but there are certain colours that just physiologically feel cooler and others warmer. Cool colours, like the sky and water naturally recede and feel more airy, promoting a serene environment. Warm colours like fire naturally advance and feel more cosy and intimate. Most people will use a balance of these colours to find the “mood” they want in their space.

JD What would you classify as a “colour mistake” when decorating?

SG If there is a sense of dis-harmony in a room, it can often be helped with paint colour correction. The paint on the wall, as well as the flooring are often the most visible colours in the room. So if these two colours don’t complement one another it can have a negative effect on the whole space.

JD What wall colour would you choose if you could have only one?

SG Oh my ---- so difficult to choose just one! I think today I would have to say Revere Pewter HC-172.

A breath of Nu-Life in the kitchen From drab to dazzling in just 4 days

“We’ve always been kitchen people,” says Pam. That’s where we

tend to eat our meals, socialize, play cards and just spend time.”

So even though Pam and Paul have recently downsized to a smaller home since they’ve both retired, they wanted to make sure that the kitchen would be large enough to accommodate an island when it came time to renovate. Pam says, “We were happy with the overall size and layout of the original kitchen so rather than do a complete gut, we took the advice of our friends and decided to reface the cabinets instead.”

While the 80’s cabinetry style and materials were outdated, there were materials worth keeping especially the $10,000 worth of black granite countertop that was only a couple years old. “It would be a waste to rip that all out,” says Pam. The couple consulted Mark Bjornson, owner of Nu-Life Kitchens, to work some magic. “Mark came out and he was very personable and very knowledgeable so we decided to go ahead,” says Pam. coloured cabinetry in the kitchen. This time around, Pam chose a light palette in Antique Whitewash that really makes the existing dark granite countertops pop. Traditional door styles with black hardware were chosen to match the granite along with new black appliances for a crisp aesthetic effect.

Crown moulding on the uppers adds rich detailing along with staggered cabinet heights over the stove and fridge for a custom look. A matching light valance was added to conceal the under-cabinet lighting.

As for the new island, Nu-Life Kitchens constructed it with deluxe panels for an upgraded look. The new addition houses the garbage and recycling functions while providing a spacious granite countertop to match the existing material.

Mark points out the craftsmanship details that go into a Nu-Life Kitchens re-facing project. “Older kitchens have the hinges on the outside of the doors, but we provide brand new concealed hinges that are installed behind the doors that give the kitchen an instantly modern look.”

This technique modernizes the kitchen and provides a much cleaner look.”

Rejuvenating the look of a dated kitchen is Nu-Life Kitchens premier claim but Mark says, “Our company can do countertops, add an island or a pantry cabinet and make modifications such as converting door cabinets to drawers. We also offer a selection of modern handles that our clients can choose from. It’s all done within the time frame of four days and at savings of up to 50 percent of the cost of a totally renovated kitchen.”

Pam and hubby concur. “The only thing we had to do was to empty our cupboards while the work was in progress, but that was the only real inconvenience we had.”

Pam is extremely pleased with the thermofoil finish that is easy to wipe down and uncannily matches the look of wood.

“You wouldn’t know by looking at it that it wasn’t the real thing.”

As for the Nu-Life Kitchens’ service, Pam rates it as ‘excellent’.

“The fellow who did the work was a real professional and made sure to clean up every day before he left. And just four days later, we had our brand new kitchen!”

as a designer, I’m involved in exciting design, décor and renovation

projects daily. The notion that a designer’s job is only about creativity, colour and vision is simply not the case – that’s just the half of it. We are also number crunchers, analysts and budget planners. It’s not the best part of our profession but at the end of the day, everyone is concerned with the bottom line: what’s this going to cost me?

Custom drapery often gets a bad reputation for being too expensive. The truth is, it could be a real budget splurge but it doesn’t have to be. We always encourage setting your budget perimeter at the beginning of a project and making the best choices for you and your home.

Adding colour to your home is like watching a

black and white movie remade into a colour film - it’s as though someone turned on the lights and gave it new life.

It energizes the scene, it presents new details hidden by shadow and adds a sense of personality otherwise ignored through shade. Let’s turn on the colour in your space and give it a new life as well.

People tend to be nervous when it comes to decorating with colour. It’s safe and easy to choose a neutral but it’s fun and exciting to play with colour. When we hear a client tell us that they love colour and want to see it incorporated into their space, it’s like music to a designer’s ears. It means we can infuse the room with fresh hues, dramatic contrast and an exuberance of personality.

Most fear arises from doubt - what kind colours to use, how to use colour in appropriate doses, and what if you use too much colour? The tone-on-tone colour combination is the simplest to work with. It means taking a colour and developing a layered effect by using the same colour in different variations. However, if you are ready to play with

renovator need to work closely together to make sure that everything goes as smoothly as possible. The renovator needs a good working environment so the job can progress without problems or delays. You want as few inconveniences and disruptions to your daily routine as possible.

Many of the responsibilities of both the renovator and the homeowner have already been spelled out in the contract. Before the work starts, sit down with your renovator and discuss everyone’s expectations and responsibilities in detail.

Good communication is key to a good renovation experience and a satisfying result.

BEFORE THE WORK BEGINS › Discuss the renovator’s requirements for the work. including access to electricity and water on a regular basis, delivery and storage of building materials, and disposal of wastes. › Determine the rules of the house for the work crew. Clarify access to bathroom facilities and eating areas, as well as kitchen privileges, if any, and also which parts of the house are off limits. Set out your smoking policy and if you permit music in the work area. › Verify that municipal permits and approvals have been obtained as needed. The contract may stipulate that your renovator will do this; however, the ultimate responsibility rests with you, the homeowner.

RENOVATOR RESPONSIBILITIES › Your professional renovator will make every effort to avoid disruptions and minimize the impact on your household. For instance, additions will be built and partially finished before the connecting wall is removed. Temporary hook-ups for water and electricity will allow you to continue your daily cooking and cleaning routines. › To keep you informed, your renovator will name a contact person for your project, usually the site supervisor or the renovator personally, who will stay in touch with you throughout the project. You will get regular updates on the progress of the work and be told when to expect tradespeople and when you will be needed for decisions. This person will also be available on short notice to respond to any questions or concerns that you have have. › The renovator is responsible for meeting deadlines.

The contract should clearly outline the project schedule and deadlines to which your renovator will work. If the work gets off-track for unforeseen reasons, the renovator will discuss the situation with you immediately and find ways to correct it. › Daily clean-up is part of the service. Professional renovators leave a clean work site at the end of each day. Be sure to discuss your expectations.

HOMEOWNER RESPONSIBILITIES › Clear work areas of furniture, drapes and art.

Protect your valuables by placing them in an area where no work is going on, or out of the home, and cover anything that might be harmed by dust. › Make early product selections. The contract may stipulate that you select and/or provide specific items such as flooring, lighting equipment, tiles and kitchen cabinets. Have these items available to your renovator when needed to ensure the smooth progress of the work.

VERIFY THAT MUNICIPAL PERMITS AND APPROVALS HAVE BEEN OBTAINED AS NEEDED. THE CONTRACT MAY STIPULATE THAT YOUR RENOVATOR WILL DO THIS; HOWEVER, THE ULTIMATE RESPONSIBILITY RESTS WITH YOU, THE HOMEOWNER. › Keep changes to a minimum. Most renovators are willing to accommodate changes to the original plan as you go along. However, changes may result in a cost increase or a time delay so make sure to discuss the implications with your renovator. Change orders are amendments to the contract and must be signed by both parties. › Be available to your renovator. Invariably, you will be asked to make a number of smaller decisions as the work progresses. Make sure that your renovator can reach you on short notice. › Discuss your concerns as they arise. Bring any concerns and questions to your renovator's attention immediately; don’t wait for “the right moment”. › Provide payment as agreed upon in the payment schedule set up in the contract. Be sure to hold back the appropriate amounts required by the Contractors’ Lien Act in your province; contact your provincial government or your lawyer for information. › Accept the unpredictable. Foul weather, unavailable products, unforeseen complications… these can be part of the renovation experience and will be dealt with by your renovator in a professional manner.

You may suspect you have a problem with mould

– so what do you do? How do you confirm or rule out your suspicions? Gregg Dalrymple, managing director of Mold.ca Inc. (mri-mold.ca ) says the only step to take is calling in a certified mould remediation company to assess the situation.

While many contractors will tell you they can do mould remediation – and Dalrymple notes that the industry is not regulated – he strongly recommends that an expert be brought in. “Mould is the new asbestos.”

Mould poses some serious health risks, Dalrymple explains, and can cause a great deal of concern. It needs to be contained and removed properly so that it doesn’t contaminate additional areas of the property. A professional mould inspection will include visual checks as well as inspection for dampness with an infrared camera, moisture meter as well as third-party air-quality testing, if required.

When people find mould they’re often confused as to what to do. Some mould isn’t a concern, says Dalrymple. The stuff you find in the corners of the tub, for example, especially when the caulking and grout is all in tact, can be cleaned up with a good mould and mildew tub cleaner. The mould that causes concern is the stuff growing inside the walls or covering large surfaces.

There are several varieties of mould, some more menacing than others, but the fundamental similarity is that mould needs moisture to survive and grow. Some of it is live spores, some not, either way, it shouldn’t be there. You can develop a mould issue when you allow moisture to get in, through a leak in the foundation, leaky roof or windows – or any way that water gets behind the walls. You can also develop mould when you allow humidity to build – not using a fan or opening a window when taking a steamy shower, not using the hood fan when boiling pots are on the stove.

The mould that causes concern is the stuff growing inside the walls or covering large surfaces.

floor; dark spotting along baseboards; or a leaky pipe are all tell-tale signs. If you have water damage, a burst pipe or discover a leak, it’s very important to have the area inspected for mould, says Dalrymple, since this creates the ideal condition for mould to grow. And it grows fast. In 24 to 48 hours you can go from no mould to major problem.

If you think you might have mould, it’s nothing to fear – or ignore! It’s estimated that between 63 and 68 per cent of Canadian homes have mould, according to Dalrymple.

A Level 1 contamination is less than 10 sq. ft. – about a sheet of drywall he explains. That small of an amount might be a do-it-yourself project, but a Level 2 contamination – from 10 sq. ft. to 100 sq. ft.; or a Level 3 contamination of more than 100 sq. ft. should definitely be left to professionals. Mould can be toxic, some strains more than others, but many of the fairly common strains carry health risks.

A professional remediation company will seal the affected space off, creating a containment area, and utilize negative air pressure so that spores cannot transfer to the rest of the home. They will clean all mould-contaminated surfaces with a commercial-grade anti-microbial disinfectant and securely wrap debris, then clean the wrap’s surface before it leaves the containment area and enters your home’s environment on its way out to the dumpster. They also use an air scrubber to ensure that no spores transfer from the contaminated area to the unaffected areas of your home. “There are no shortcuts,” says Dalrymple. Specialized equipment including a $3,000 HEPA vacuum, air scrubbers, negative pressure machine, thermal fogger, protective masks, suiting and gear to protect both the crew and property owners are just some of the equipment and products needed to effectively eradicate mould. Proper remediation can be pricey, but contaminating the rest of your home and having to gut the whole thing – or worse, getting sick, carries a much heftier price.

“My husband says we have that cottage smell,” one client told Dalrymple. He explained to her that smell is actually mould. She may very well have mould at the cottage and now that she and her husband brought back a mouldy box from the cottage and stored it in their new wine cellar, they had contaminated it too. He recommended remediation in both their home and their cottage.

Smell is one of the very obvious signs of mould Dalrymple explains.

Dalrymple says that he’s been seeing a lot of people whose doctors have recommended they have their homes tested for mould. Mould can cause all types of respiratory issues and people with weak immune systems, allergies, the very young and the very old are even more sensitive.

He also strongly recommends mould be something you discuss when having a home inspection. A lot of flips will cover up damage or may have work not done to code. He’s seen mould in brand new spaces because renovators have taken shortcuts – such as building additions directly onto the ground, exposing drywall to the sub-grade elements. He’s seen ‘lipstick solutions’ to seriously expensive problems that would have made the renovation or house flip unprofitable if dealt with properly. You never know what’s behind a fresh coat of paint. Dalrymple is even starting to see mould issues in condos.

A mould inspection is the only definitive way to determine if mould is present.

With infrared cameras and moisture meters employed, damp areas can be identified. With air quality testing done by an accredited lab the guesswork is completely removed. Nothing can hide from air quality testing and the official lab report which is signed off by a doctor. This report will give you the answers you need, even the species of mould present, so that you can make informed decisions regarding proper mould remediation and take control of your environment. ocT - nov 2012 home décor and renovations 75

a colourful one. I am currently embarking on a full kitchen renovation where introducing colour will play a large role. While ensuring the kitchen is in keeping with the colour palette of the rest of my house, (greys and blues) I’m hoping to do a few unexpected things to keep the kitchen modern and playful. Similar to many of my residential clients, my husband and I differ on the amount of colour to be used as we both have a different threshold (mine large, his smaller). But luckily, there are many options available on the market today to satiate one’s taste for colour in the kitchen, both large and small.

For colour-embracing cooks, the Viking range available at the new Appliance Canada showroom is a beautiful tool. The range and hood can be coloured in a multitude of vibrant hues including: fire engine red, cobalt blue, and goldenrod yellow. Additionally, the knobs and handles can be customized in various metal finishes. Also consider colour on the interior of your major appliances. Electrolux’s appliance interiors come in a bright blue hue that not only looks great when opened, but assists in the performance of warming and cooking. Finally, to make washing your dishes an invigorating experience, Kohler has partnered with colour guru Jonathan Adler in a line of eye-catching cast iron kitchen sinks sure to create a stunning statement.

Cabinetry is another area where colour can make a large impact. While beige and brown are beautiful classic choices, navy blue, forest green and rust orange can 76 home décor and renovations oct - nov 2012

retain a traditional aesthetic while introducing a new colour to your palette.

In a more modern kitchen, the sky’s the limit — bright and bold cabinets can be a great fit for a more modern space.

While committing to colour on a grand scale is not for everyone, there are easy ways to introduce punches of colour in smaller doses. The Bodum Bistro Toaster comes in a variety of bright hues and can be coordinated with their equally vibrant kettles, blenders and juicers. The Kitchen Aid stand mixer is another countertop appliance that comes in a variety of hues to suit your taste. Coordinating these smaller appliances with your dishtowels, serving ware or flower vases is another way to add a small punch and retailers like Bouclair make it simple to purchase accessories by organizing their merchandise by colour.

I’m approaching choosing colours for my own kitchen renovation in a similar manner to the way I assist my clients. I’m asking the questions, “will this colour make me feel great to come home to? Will the overall look enhance my quality of life?” I look forward to using colour to put my own personal stamp on my new kitchen, and create a colourful space my family will enjoy for years to come.

Dealing with radon in your home YOU MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE IT IN

your home. You may have an acceptable amount of it, or too much. If the latter, you should get rid of it, and there is no better time to do so than when you are renovating your home.

The "it" is radon, an invisible, odourless soil gas that occurs naturally in areas across Canada. Radon is not a health concern outside in the open air because it exists in very low concentrations. But when it finds its way into your home, it can build up to a level where it may have a detrimental effect on your health, if you are exposed for a prolonged period. Radon has been linked to lung cancer, and smokers in particular are vulnerable to its effects.

Essentially, the soil around your home exerts pressure on the foundation and under the slab. Where present in the soil, radon can seep into your home through dirt floors, cracks and fissure in the basement floor and walls, sump pumps, and other openings. While the highest concentrations are usually found on the lowest level, radon can disperse throughout the whole house, including your living and sleeping areas.

You can't smell or see radon, so the only way to know if you have it is to test for it. Some areas in Canada are more prone to radon than others, but radon can occur anywhere. And just because your neighbour doesn't have it, or only at a low acceptable level, it doesn't mean that you don't need to bother about testing. Your home could have an entirely different reading.

Testing is easy. There are a number of do-it-yourself radon test kits on the market, or you can hire someone to do it. Be aware that the best and most reliable tests take time, several months or longer. It is a good idea to start testing well in advance of doing any renovation work so you can incorporate any radon-related work into the project.

Testing need not delay your plans, usually there is a considerable lagtime between when people first start thinking about renovating and when the work gets underway. And of course, you don't have to wait until you decide to renovate, it is a good idea to test your home for radon anytime, just to be certain.

In 2007 Health Canada lowered the acceptable level for radon in homes to bring it into line with international guidelines. It also made recommendations for new home construction and measures to deal with radon problems in existing homes.

If your home shows that radon is present above acceptable levels, there is a whole range of things that can be done to bring it down.

Possible measures to prevent radon from entering the house include sealing cracks and other openings or depressurizing the basement (essentially sucking the air out from below the slab).

Installing a heat recovery ventilator (HRV) to increase ventilation in the whole house can also reduce the amount of radon in the air. This is where a professional renovator can be very helpful, and can discuss with you how to integrate these measures with the rest of the renovation work, and how they may affect the work and your budget.

There is a wealth of great information and advice available from a number of sources, including Health Canada and the Canadian Lung Association to help you learn more about radon and its effects, myths and facts, how to test for it in your own home and approaches to deal with it, should this prove necessary.

Provincial governments may also have helpful information.
