’m sure no one will disagree when I say that we all deserve a medal for making it through the harshest winter since 1898. The good news of course is that spring is finally here. There is a renewed sense of excitement and optimism that naturally occurs as the days get longer and we begin to enjoy the warmth of the sun. This is truly an exciting and busy time of the year for homeowners. The new season brings with it a long list of interior and exterior projects to tackle. These projects may include a new deck, sunroom, rec room, kitchen, bathroom or addition.

Regardless of the renovation, the end result will be highly desirable if professional renovators are employed. Professionals offer expert advice, accurate pricing and superior service. Professional renovators possess a proven track record, so make sure to ask for referrals. Legitimate renovators will have no problem providing you with a list of satisfied customers.

They will also provide you with a written contract. Remember that trust alone is not enough. A written contract protects both the renovator and the homeowner.

Everything is spelled out so that all parties involved know the details of the project, dollar amounts and timelines.

A professional renovator will have liability insurance and workers’ compensation coverage. Although it is unlikely that any property damage will occur during the renovation process, isn’t it nice to know that your professional renovator’s coverage protects you from liability?

We consider it important to receive a warranty for all sorts of purchases. Why should your renovation be any different? A professional renovation comes with a warranty on labour. Also, professional installation prevents voiding the manufacturer’s warranties on materials and products.

Homeowners are encouraged to research their projects well, hire professionals, and get everything down in writing. Much can be learned by visiting the MHBA’s website at www.homebuilders.mb.ca as well as the RenoMark website at www. renomark.ca. Be informed and don’t try to take shortcuts that could end up costing you more in the end. If the job requires a professional, hire a professional and get it done right the first time!

THE RENOMARK RENOVATORS’ COUNCIL OF

the Manitoba Home Builders’ Association is responsible for maintaining the high standards and professional conduct expected of this profession. In various formats, this group has been operating for a few decades. Many of their members are highlighted in this magazine through profiles, articles and advertisements. All are listed on the MHBA web site (www. homebuilders.mb.ca).

MHBA renovators follow the RenoMark standards as used across Canada. These include such items as always providing a detailed written contract, carrying a minimum of $2 million of liability insurance, offering a two year warranty on their work, have a GST number and file appropriate taxes, have Workers Compensation coverage for them and their sub-contractors and carry all applicable licenses and permits.

These are all reasonable expectations of a professional renovator but unfortunately not the norm for many that attempt to represent themselves as such.

Part of being a professional is paying one’s fair share of fees and taxes rather than feed the underground economy. Tax 12 HOME DÉCOR AND RENOVATIONS APR - MAY 2014

cheats hurt everyone and present a real danger to consumers.

If you don’t have the necessary permits, the work is illegal and you could be charged. If something goes wrong, you have no recourse as there was no record of the work being done. The consumer may bear the burden of legal liability if no written contract exists.

Professional renovators keep abreast of new developments in the industry and pursue educational opportunities. MHBA renovators are aware of building and energy code changes; they attend technical seminars and workshops and they receive information from both their provincial and national associations.

Consumers need to be certain that their renovation is being done to today’s standards and regulations and not just the way they’ve always done it.

RenoMark renovators maintain a safe worksite for the benefit of all. They are aware of Workplace Safety and Health regulations and the rights of their employees. Their safe work procedures are important to them and the wellbeing of the job site.

The Renovators’ Council gives back to the community too.

These are the people that work the Ask a Renovator booth at the Kitchen Bath and Renovation Show every year, offering free advice to attendees thinking about a future project.

They run a renovation seminar every spring, again answering consumer questions in an open forum. Many are involved in a number of charitable projects, helping those in need.

The old adage says you get what you pay for. Just as you wouldn’t want a part-time amateur doctor, dentist, engineer, teacher or any other important profession working on your behalf, you also don’t want an unskilled, untrained part-time pseudo-contractor working on your most expensive belonging – your house. Look for the RenoMark logo; look for the MHBA logo; look on the MHBA web site; read the RenoMark code of ethics; demand the utmost in professionalism from your renovator. You deserve the best.

Canada’s Handyman Challenge is in its third season – what can viewers expect?

BRYAN: This season is all about bigger challenges and bigger personalities.

We had some real characters this year, crazy weather and some interesting group dynamics.

SCOTT: First of all, we tapped into some new Canadian cities such as Calgary and Winnipeg, where we’d never been before. That brought all types of new talents and energy to the season, which was great. The other thing that was interesting was the outcome of this season – it was very unexpected. There were guys who I pinned to win from the beginning who got eliminated early, which allowed some others to emerge. It was unpredictable.

Nothing you think is going to happen does. There were a couple villains as well. It was the first time we had that on the show.

PAUL: In a nutshell, one of the biggest differences this season is that we are having a lot more fun. In each individual city, the challenges have been designed to not only test the skill level of our contestants but also the limits of their imagination. For me personally, the ability to be creative on the fly is something that I look for in Canada’s top handyman.

IN EACH INDIVIDUAL CITY THE CHALLENGES HAVE BEEN DESIGNED TO NOT ONLY TEST THE SKILL LEVEL OF OUR CONTESTANTS BUT ALSO THE LIMITS OF THEIR IMAGINATION

What is it like working together?

BRYAN: I grew up with two older brothers, so I was always the baby and never had any younger siblings. I now feel like I know what it’s like to have two little annoying brothers follow you around and harass you all day. The good news is they don’t follow me home!

SCOTT It’s awful (laughs). Seriously, we’re all friend, so it’s good.

We’re all in this for the same reasons. We’re trying to help people who should be in the trades, get into the trades. Bryan and I have been friends for a while, so we always have a good time and it’s great to hang out with Paul. You never know what’s going to happen when one of us doesn’t agree with the other two (which is often the case with me).

PAUL: It is like hanging out with your brothers for a full month, which means a lot of banter, a lot of practical jokes and a whole lot of fun. Each one of us brings something different to the table.

While we don’t always agree, this is part of what makes CHC an enjoyable experience. I love a good debate!

Do you have a memorable moment from this season?

BRYAN: There was one challenge that we were all really excited for, the contestants really went for it, but the results were not what we expected. You’ll have to watch the show!

SCOTT: When we were in Calgary, I laughed so hard when we had to do the strongman ringing-of-the-bell competition and Paul couldn’t ring the bell once. He tried so many times and it was so funny. There were a lot of wipe-outs and crashes this season. Paul came crashing down once and it was scary for a second, but it ended up being pretty funny.

PAUL: There are almost too many to choose just one. However, I will certainly never forget the look of terror on both Scott’s and Bryan’s faces during one particular challenge. You will know it when you see it.

What’s impressed you most about this group of contestants so far?

BRYAN: We’ve got a great variety of characters this year, from all across the country.

SCOTT: The teamwork. There was more teamwork than we’ve ever had before. They worked so well together and managed to do some pretty incredible stuff.

PAUL: It is always memorable when I see a group of contestants who are all there to win and yet they form an amazing camaraderie with each other and even fight for each other. This was more evident than ever in this season of CHC. You can always judge the quality of talent based on how difficult it is to send someone home. This year we had to make some of the most difficult cuts in the history of the show.

THE GREAT THING ABOUT HAVING THREE JUDGES IS WE ALL HAVE A DIFFERENT OPINION OF WHAT QUALITIES CONSTITUTE CANADA’S TOP HANDYMAN What does it mean to be a true “handyman”?

BRYAN: It’s not skill, precision or perfection that define a true handyman – it’s a love for working with your hands and creating or repairing something useful out of a variety of materials. It’s about trying new things, challenging yourself and having an innovative spirit.

SCOTT: A handyman is someone who has both the desire and the skill to fix and repair and build just about anything.

PAUL:

I am looking for passion and skill, but mostly I am looking for someone willing to step out of their comfort zone and take a risk because those are the people who truly discover what they capable of.

How do you think homeowners can release their inner handyman spirit?

BRYAN: Go get some tools, watch some HGTV for inspiration and go for it!

SCOTT: Homeowners who watch the show can identify with the contestants and what we do on the show. A lot of the people who show up at auditions watched last year and thought they can do it, too. When you see things that you think you could be good at, it’s time to try out.

PAUL: That’s an easy one! Remember what it was like to be a kid. Whether it was building forts in the backyard, a go-cart or even a project for the science fair, what people forget about developing the skill to fix things on your own is that it is not only incredibly rewarding, but it can also be a lot of fun.

Their ‘FOREVER’ home

THE ART OF THE DOWNSIZE DOESN’T NECESSARILY INVOLVE MAKING A

straight bee-line to condo living for retirees or those contemplating this new stage of life. Lesley and Al represent one such couple who have found their own middle ground by returning to the Riverview community of their youth from Whyte Ridge where they raised their family.

A central location close to downtown for Al, a small yard with towering trees and lilac bushes for Lesley, and a stunning front view of the Red River for both, were all compelling reasons to make the move.

The couple was fortunate to find a 1000 square foot bungalow built in the ‘40s and assessed its renovation potential before signing on the dotted line to make it their own.

A CENTRAL LOCATION CLOSE TO DOWNTOWN FOR AL, A SMALL YARD WITH TOWERING TREES AND LILAC BUSHES FOR LESLEY, AND A STUNNING FRONT VIEW OF THE RED RIVER FOR BOTH, WERE ALL COMPELLING REASONS TO MAKE THE MOVE.

The couple followed a recommendation from one of Al’s clients who had hired Jayson Nickol of Over and Above Custom Homes and Renovations for a project and ipso facto, the renovation began.

The first phase involved addressing the nuts and bolts of upgrading the electrical wiring, heating ducts, insulation, installation of windows and new roof as well as widening the original basement stairs.

Jayson and his crew proved their worth through this first leg of the renovation impressing the couple with “his problem solving abilities and his relationship with his trades people,” says Lesley.

The second phase of the renovation involved adding main floor footage for an eat-in space off the gallery kitchen, a re-working of three bedrooms to two resulting in an enlarged master with spacious walk-in closet and a proper den. The basement was re-vamped to a stylish, self-sufficient space for the couple’s daughter including a recreation room, spa-style bathroom and generously proportioned bedroom.

The original galley style kitchen layout was preserved. “I really like the configuration especially after having a big kitchen all those years. It saves a lot of steps but it still has plenty of

Every detail contributed to making the most of the view,” says Jayson.

Know why you want to renovate. What problems are you trying to solve?

Most renovations begin with practical issues. For instance, your bathroom may be cramped, you need more storage space in the kitchen, or there is nowhere for the children to play or do homework under your supervision.

Evaluate the structure, systems and general condition of your house. With your renovator, list the repairs and replacements likely to be

required over the next two, five and 10 years. If necessary, be prepared to make trade-offs between lifestyle improvements and work needed to keep your home in good shape.

Work with the strengths of your home. And save money at the same time. Check under existing carpeting and sheet flooring for old hardwood flooring. Refinish old trim and molding rather than replace it. Resurface cabinets rather than installing new ones. Turn a large landing into a child's play area, a quiet reading area or a small home office.

Keep it simple. A complex design can result in complicated and expensive construction. Whether you want to build on to your home, change roof lines or reconfigure interior space, consult with a professional renovator on the impact of design on construction and budget. Less complex designs will often let you achieve the same goals.

Don't worry about trends. Design trends come and go. First and foremost, plan for comfort, ease of living and personal satisfaction.

I am well acquainted with the design culture of our city. On the whole, we like contemporary looks, but not too modern.

We like to be different, but not too “out there.” We know who we are, and where we came from. We are prairie and we embrace all that prairie means (although we were really tested this year with the winter weather)!

As Winnipeggers, we generally prefer to set up our rooms in a more eclectic style — “matchy-matchy” is not for us.

A combination of contemporary finishes and classic design elements can help you accomplish an on-trend take on timeless style in any home. In this year’s lottery house, we juxtaposed traditional furniture and contemporary details in our very own prairie ways. We used washed and reclaimed wood and added rustic elements such as galvanized steel, vintage lighting and chalkboards.

Winnipeg has really embraced reclaimed wood. We know its ecofriendly, but it also adds a touch of history and it fits with prairie traditions of saving and repurposing quality material, especially when you live in the middle of Canada! It may be because its ties to the farmhouse style are a reminder of simpler times, or just that

wood is functional and beautiful (the best of both worlds!). Whatever the reason, wood is used in a bigger way – whether in the application of flooring, furniture or accessories – to bring more personality and texture into the space.

In the great room area, wire-brushed hardwood floors and occasional tables made from reclaimed wood add warmth to the contrasting black and white colour scheme.

In the dining area, we juxtaposed old and new, pairing a distressed driftwood table with clear acrylic chairs that seem to disappear into space for a perfect transitional twist on traditional.

Winnipeg has moved through many design trends, honing and refining looks and techniques as we’ve developed our own unique style — one that represents the prairie in all its beauty. We have shifted to our very own eclectic persona. We don’t want to be Toronto or Vancouver; Winnipeg has

its own identity. We take prairie aesthetics to a whole different level and we make it grand. And why not?

you will want to update or replace cladding, doors and windows at some point. Exterior renovations can give new life to a "tired" home and reduce maintenance significantly. At the same time, you can improve the energy efficiency, security and general comfort of your home.

When you are ready to begin planning, talk with a professional renovator to get ideas and a sense of cost. Make sure it's someone who is experienced in exterior renovations and can offer you both sound technical advice and design assistance.

A new look Maybe you simply want to update the appearance of your home, or maybe you want to transform it with a different look - now is the time to explore the possibilities. To begin with, there is a great selection of quality exterior cladding products bricks, stucco and siding in many different materials, colours, sizes and styles. Renovators sometimes mix and match materials to create attractive, custom-tailored exteriors.

Your renovator can advise you on the right new energy-efficient windows to help capture the sun's heat on the north side, block out sunlight and excess heat gain on the south side and to cut glare.

Also check the Office of Energy Efficiency at Natural Resources Canada for helpful information on upgrading the energy efficiency of your home.

Security and safety With today's new products, it's easier to secure your home. Exterior doors can be fitted with dead bolts and strong locks, and windows can be installed with solid locking mechanisms. Consult with your renovator about other measures you can take, such as bars on basement windows. With a resume of hit shows, including Sarah 101, Sarah’s House, and Real Potential, this design darling has shown us that even the most unsalvageable looking spaces can be transformed into something beautiful. Sarah took some time away from her busy schedule to solve some interior design dilemmas and provide us with her oh-so-coveted advice.

What is your favourite 2014 spring trend and what are a few ways to incorporate it into a home’s interior?

A Irregular faceted shapes are very popular right now. I’m seeing them in a variety of accessories, from table lamps to candles and vases, bowls and even just decorative objects.

Gold continues to be a big inspiration in both fashion and home so the combination of these faceted shapes and gilded finishes allows you to add a hit of lustre and a metallic finish to any room with ease. Add it to your mantel in a grouping, down the centre of your dining table (as votives), or as a grouping on the coffee table.

Many homes now feature hardwood and tiled flooring in living spaces. What are the do’s and don’ts for choosing the perfect area rug?

A As a general rule when placing furniture, make sure the front legs of your furniture are sitting on the carpet by at least 6”. If your carpet sits in the middle of the room and all furniture sits around it, the carpet will look like an island (or a postage stamp). I find 6’ x 9’ carpets are almost always too small for any room, unless you are using it in a foyer.

To measure the ideal size, leave a perimeter all around the room of about 14” and you’ll be left with the right sized carpet. It’s better to buy the right sized carpet from an affordable source, rather than buy a pricey one that is too small.

For many colour is a scary thing, leaving them to go with neutral, and sometimes less exciting, tones.

How do you decide which colour(s) work best in a space and how much colour to inject?

A No matter how much you love colour, using it everywhere is just too much. I always advise starting with a foundation of neutrals for all the big pieces (such as sofas and chairs), and then sprinkle in colour as desired. Pillows, artwork, accessories, and even carpets can be brought home and tested in place before making a big commitment, so you can experiment and decide what your colour comfort level is. Focus on which pieces will create impact, and leave some breathing areas where the eye can rest - it shouldn’t be a visual assault.

AVOID BUYING A SUITE - IT DOESN’T HAVE ANY PERSONALITY. CHOOSE COMPLIMENTARY ELEMENTS THAT HAVE A SIMILAR PROPORTION BUT A DIFFERENT PROFILE, AND YOU’LL BE ABLE TO CREATE A UNIFIED GROUPING. Open concept living spaces have the benefit of providing a modern and spacious environment; however, it can be challenging to split a space into multiple living areas.

What are some inventive ways to create space partitions?

A Instead of creating partitions, I’d recommend delineating zones within the room. The reason for buying an open concept space is to be able to benefit from long sight lines and large areas. If you have a large room, don’t feel that you can only do a single seating area. Break the room up and create distinct zones tailored to specific activities, and keep all seating tight enough together that you can have a conversation - if everything is pushed to the outer corners, you’ll have to yell to have a conversation.

Shopping for new living/family room seating often leaves individuals choosing a set of matching sofas and chairs. What are some tips to mixing and matching pieces to create a unique and personalized living room set?

A Avoid buying a suite - it doesn’t have any personality. Choose complimentary elements that have

a similar proportion but a different profile, and you’ll be able to create a unified grouping. Also think about what each area is best suited to - of course, you’ll want the sofa to be deep and comfortable if you’re kicking back and watching a movie, but do all the pieces need to serve the same purpose, or can some of the chairs be more sculptural and tailored (and perhaps suited to enjoying the fire, or being used by guests).

Family pictures are a great way to add a personal touch to a space. What are your favourite off-the-mantle ways to showcase a collection of photos?

A Photos are best when hung on a wall so you can get up close and really look at them. I think upper hallways and stairwells, or large basement walls are ideally suited to a collection of family photos installed as a gallery wall.

They are personal photos and work best when hung in your personal space instead of in the principal rooms. You just can’t go wrong with buying a collection of frames in the same finish in varying sizes. Try to find an option with ready cut mats so your photos will have a professional look when done. And hang them all with even spacing in between for a low cost/high impact install.

Exactly how much can we expect the cost of lawn care to increase using Fiesta as compared to Par 3, the current herbicide used to control weeds on lawns?

A

The price of Fiesta is coming down slightly as more municipalities and provinces impose bans on the use of Par 3. At present, comparing apples to apples, the cost of Fiesta is 23x higher that the cost of Par 3. However, as a consumer, one should expect to see a variety of strategies that will be put forth by lawn care companies. Programs that involve spot treatments will ultimately disappoint. This has been verified by the Guelph Turfgrass Institute, members of Landscape Ontario, as well at the manufacturer of Fiesta, Neudorff. In order to achieve proper results, a minimum of 2 applications of Fiesta in the first 30 days of spring will be required, followed by ongoing spot treatments for weeds throughout the remainder of the season. Consumers should expect price increases on the order of approximately 50% over current prices.

If I get rid of my weeds this summer, but my neighbours don’t, won’t their weeds infest my lawn next summer?

A

They certainly will, eventually. You would be wise to encourage your neighbours to eliminate their weeds this season, while they can do so at a minimal cost. If they aren’t keen to do so this season, it’s a safe bet they won’t be interested at all in doing it next year, after prices go up.

A

Pesticide possession is federally regulated. That is to say, that you can possess even the pesticides that the provincial government has banned.

The provincial ban addresses the “sale and use” of pesticides. While your neighbor may possess banned pesticides, it would be against the law for him to apply them in Manitoba. That being said, Manitoba Conservation has absolutely no intention of setting up a snitch line and would very much like to discourage homeowners from tying up the 411 line to inform on their neighbours.

The height of all upper cabinets was increased making the kitchen feel grander and adding extra storage. The couple chose a larger refrigerator and we replaced cabinets to accommodate it along with cabinet modifications above the stove for the over the range microwave.”

A feature aluminum door with flip-up hinge and masterpoint glass, a light valance positioned below the upper cabinets and a Cambria quartz countertop and waterfall gable in Praa Sands are aesthetic elements that are both striking and functional. And for whisper quiet operation, Sheri notes that all cabinetry doors and pots and pans drawers were upgraded with soft close hinges.

And the time frame for this astounding makeover delighted this couple to no end – a mere four days from start to finish!

“The pony wall used to hide the end of the cabinets. There was no finishing; it was just a flat box at the end of the counter. When we removed that wall, it was the perfect opportunity to have the waterfall quartz continue. Now it’s almost like looking at a piece of artwork.”

It seemed every space was alive with potted plant life, and I was especially taken with the miniature cactus gardens in each suite. Cleverly, these terrariums are both visually appealing because of their exotic nature (especially to those of us from northern climates), and also very easy to take care of, so they last much longer than a cut bouquet.

05 Non-Linear Thinking Besides the evocative paintings, The James uses small, unique details to give each space character and personality. Wiring for hanging pendants create curling abstract forms rather than running straight up the wall, and similar freeform lines in long hallway carpets are mirrored on the ceilings for a truly unique and eye-catching detail. At the end of the day, you have to remember not to take your style too seriously – after all, Miami is about having fun! others, and this project hit close. Really close. Not only were my clients extremely particular and demanding about all aspects of the design, they were also my parents. After 35 years of living in the house I grew up in, they had enough of all the stair climbing, yard work and maintenance involved in keeping up their home. The house was sold with all the nostalgia and mixed emotions that usually accompany such a life change, and they decided to purchase a condo. After my old room had been cleaned out,

repainted and staged, I had to get over it fast and focus on my next task – creating a new home for my parents that they would enjoy for the next chapter of their lives.

The building they chose had been built in the early 1980s, and the unit had never been updated. Although the kitchen was a good size, the original finishes were worn and dated, the cabinets small and the appliances

in poor condition. The entire condo, including the kitchen, was renovated before they moved in.

As an avid cook, my mother was concerned about having a functional kitchen with lots of counter and storage space. She wanted the room to be bright and airy, with sleek contemporary cabinetry. The kitchen was gutted – floor, walls and ceiling – and we started from scratch. I can still hear the echo of my

contractor’s warning, “This one better be perfect, or you’ll be hearing about it for the next 30 years.” The pressure was on.

The first challenge was the concrete construction of the building and the condo board rules. We had no choice but to leave the sink, stove and fridge in their existing locations, limiting the layout options for the room. My mom, however, wanted to increase the amount of storage, add a wine fridge, an attractive range hood and a built-in microwave. I had to find a way to create extra space where there was none before.

We were able to check off everything on my parents’ list by closing off the entrance to the adjoining room, (which was converted from the dining room to an office for my dad), creating more space for storage and appliances. The peninsula was moved out towards the window, giving us room for an additional cabinet next to the sink. The depth of the peninsula was also increased to allow for storage on all three sides, and plenty of counter space for cooking and baking.

With the layout settled, we set about creating the contemporary look my parents were after. The dropped ceiling was removed to create a more open feeling and new track lighting was added to properly illuminate the space. High gloss custom cabinets were installed in grey and white, and CaesarStone counters that look like marble provide a beautiful, maintenance-free work surface. Extra large porcelain tiles were used on the floor to create the illusion of an even bigger space.

For the backsplash, my mother wanted the simple, clean look of a marble slab, but it didn’t fit in the budget. To get the look without the price, we installed large marble tiles. Each tile is the same height as the distance between the counter and the upper cabinets, so there is little interruption in the veining of the marble.

My parents are now happily settled into their new condo. Like in the old house, the kitchen is the heart of their new home. It took no time for my mother to get back into her routine of hosting large family dinners, cooking and baking up a storm. “It’s amazing,” she told me recently. “I love my kitchen, and it’s even better than my old one.” Phew! Another demanding client satisfied. And it’s a good thing… this one has a key to my house!

Kitchen tips and tricks: 1

Using two different colours for kitchen cabinets can help create a more dynamic and balanced space.

In this kitchen, we used light grey cabinets on the sink side of the room to provide contrast with the dark counters and white backsplash. We used white on the opposite side where the cabinets run floor to ceiling.

Most kitchens require bulkheads for ventilation ducts. By hiding them inside the upper cabinets you can achieve a higher-end, more custom look.

Here, we built the cabinets, around the bulkheads and extended the doors in front of them to create the illusion that the cabinets go all the way to the ceiling. The taller cabinets add to the sleek look.

Large floor tiles can trick the eye into making a room seem bigger than it is, as long as the room isn’t tiny. In very small spaces such as powder rooms, large tiles can have the opposite effect. Be sure you can fit at least three full tiles across the width of the floor.

Instead of cabinets with doors, use large, deep drawers in your base cabinets. They allow you to store more items, can be organized with dividers and inserts, and are much easier to access.

Make the best use of corners by installing LeMans units. These handy gizmos make use of space that is otherwise lost, and pull all the way out of the cabinet for easy access. No more crawling on your hands and knees to find something buried all the way at the back.

Weed control changes coming

the provincial government has the intention to ban certain pesticides from use in Manitoba. The body responsible for the implementation of these changes is the Manitoba Department of Conservation and Water Stewardship. While Manitoba Conservation would prefer to regard the removal of these pesticides from use as a restriction rather than a ban, Manitobans are likely to call a spade a spade. The fact of the matter is, that Manitobans will no longer be permitted to use a long list of pesticides. The term ‘restricted’ would seem to imply that there may be extreme conditions under which the provincial government might permit their use, however, home

owners and lawn care companies should not expect to be able to use any of the common, inexpensive weed control products they’ve relied on for the past five decades. The fact is, these products will not be permitted for use under any circumstance, which means, in essence, they are ‘banned.’ We are told that the gist of the legislation has been written, though there are still minor details to be sorted out. I have been told that the provincial government expects to implement the ban on weed control products as of January 2015, with enforcement to commence no later than June of 2015.

While most hardware stores have already discontinued synthetic pesticides in favour of organic, lower risk products, lawn care companies that currently offer highly effective weed control utilizing cost effective weed control products, will be forced to make the switch to an organic, lower risk herbicide called Fiesta. The catch is that Fiesta will come with some serious sticker shock and homeowners will have to adjust their expectations. Fiesta will never achieve the same results that are almost instantaneously achieved by traditional herbicides.

This year, you will likely notice many lawn care companies introducing Fiesta as part of one of the programs they offer as they try to provide their customers some sense of what Fiesta can and can’t do, as well as what kind of price increases consumers can expect.

Fiesta is an iron-based, selective weed killer. On grass, iron acts to increase nutrient uptake, and an iron application will generate a dramatic dark green colour in the lawn, literally, within hours. In weeds however, Fiesta forces the weeds to take in certain nutrients much too rapidly. The weed effectively overdoses on nutrients. In Manitoba trials, at least two applications of Fiesta are suggested within a 30 day period. After the first treatment, weeds are immediately stunted. Dandelions cease to bloom. While many dandelions may survive the first treatment, the second treatment completely eliminates as much as 70% of the weeds that initially infested the lawn.

Unfortunately, only two treatments of Fiesta are typically possible in the spring, though spot treatments can be performed throughout the year.

Essentially, for this summer, the message is this; get rid of your weeds this summer, while you can still do so cost effectively, and with maximum effect. Once traditional weed control products are gone, the only

remaining option will be Fiesta. It is important to note as well, that in order to keep weeds to a minimum in your yard (note I did not say ‘weed free’), you must continue to use Fiesta annually. Fiesta is very effective on dandelions when used consistently, though a 100% guarantee would be difficult at best. Unfortunately, Fiesta has little to no effect on Thistle, Clover, Creeping Charlie, or Plantain. Proper cultural practices will become much more important if a thick lawn that leaves little space for weeds to invade, is desired.

In short, control your weeds now, while you can do so effectively and cheaply, for next season, you’ll likely be paying more, for less results.
