EDITOR’S NOTE

APPLIANCES FASHION OR FUNCTIONALITY? “The oven’s not preheating,” I call out to my partner, who is in another room. “What do you mean?” he asks, reappearing moments later. “I preheated it 10 minutes ago, and it’s stuck at 100 degrees,” I say as I open the door and touch the racks with a brazen fervour. “See?” He mimics my movements and frowns, agreeing with my assessment.

Thirty minutes of painful elevator music later, and he’s scheduled a call with our oven’s service department. We both are flummoxed by the suddenly dysfunctional appliance, given we’d only used it a handful of times since its delivery three months ago when we took possession of our new home.

When repair day comes, I observe the technician from my spot at the breakfast bar. I apologize for my inundation of questions that are goaded on by my naturally inquisitive nature as he lays various parts of our oven onto the kitchen floor. He sighs, frustrated, before finally speaking. “It’s your igniter.” He seems amused by my expression. “Really? Already?”

“They just don’t make ‘em like they used to,” he says.

So I ask: “Is there any brand that’s less impervious to these kinds of issues?” He shakes his head, “Nope.” He jimmies another panel free, mumbling a curse to himself. “I tell my clients all the time, save your money, forgo the glitz and glam and focus on functionality. These things go too quickly to justify the price of repairing ‘em.”

Gone are the days of appliances outliving fashion and music periods. My grandmother still cooks holiday meals on the stove she’s had since the late ‘70’s. Meanwhile, we’re cashing in on our one-year warranty, three months in.

I mull over what the service guy says and with a sigh, I realize he’s probably right. Functionality should always win the war over fashion in your home.

COVENTRY HOMES CELEBRATES THE 11TH ANNUAL PAWS AND CLAWS GALA

On Sat., March 9, the Coventry Homes team came together with hundreds of guests at the Northlands Expo Centre to celebrate its partnership with the Edmonton Humane Society. This year marked the 11th annual Paws and Claws Gala - a fundraising event that supports a worthy cause in the community.

Last year’s event marked an incredible milestone for the gala, with more than $1 million raised.

This year, the event added another $85,000 to Coventry’s fundraising initiative – final donations are still being totalled.

The music-themed gala featured a gourmet buffet dinner and live music by Clayton Bellamy, who performed the music of Tom Petty throughout the evening. The night’s great music and delicious food were accompanied by numerous ways to donate to the Edmonton Humane Society: a 50/50 raffle, an extensive silent auction, a Heads/Tails game during dinner, and the popular Adopt-aStuffie Raffle all made it easy for guests to support

the Edmonton Humane Society.

One of the most anticipated events of the night was the live auction, which included some fantastic experiences like a puppy & kitten visit from the Edmonton Humane Society, an Oilers Alumni VIP Experience, and an Elton John Farewell Tour Concert Package for four, which includes dinner, drinks, concert tickets, hotel stay and spa.

Another highlight of the event were the furry guests of honour - adorable animals from the Edmonton Humane Society that guests were able to spend time with throughout the night. The chance to meet some of the animals in need of a forever home shined the spotlight on just how important the Edmonton Humane Society is in our community. Providing consistent and honorable advancements in animal welfare is what defines the Edmonton Humane Society, and the funds raised by the Paws and Claws gala go toward the enrichment of the programs and services it provides.

CHBA Celebrating the 2019 Awards of Excellence in Housing

On Sat. March 16, the Canadian Home Builders’ Association - Edmonton Region honoured some of the industry’s best at its annual Awards of Excellence in Housing gala. The 2019 awards took over the Shaw Conference Centre in Parisian style to congratulate some of Edmonton’s finest in home building, renovating, community development, sales and marketing.

The sold-out evening featured a chic Paris in Spring theme, which included French gardeninspired décor, with a magnificent Eiffel Tower at the centre of the space that stole the show.

Guests were also treated to a delicious French-influenced dinner, and fantastic music from a live band. Of course, the highlight of the evening was the exciting awards program that noted another excellent year of first-rate housing and community projects in the city.

The Awards were presented in 60 individual categories including Single-Family, Multi-Family, Renovation, Sales Centre, Advertising, Development, Leadership, Environmental, Builders’ Choice, Sales Volume, Sales People and Builder/Realtor.

There were many deserving winners throughout the night in a variety of categories. Rohit Communities took home four advertising awards including Best Digital Campaign. Best Show Home Parade went to Qualico Communities for The Uplands at Riverview, and the popular Canada Lands Company development, Griesbach, won for Best Community. The

most anticipated awards of the night were the coveted Builder of the Year trophies. This year’s winners were Vicky’s Homes for Small Volume, Marcson Homes for Large Volume, and Carrington Communities for Multi-Family.

Consumer Agency of Canada, for many Canadians, their knowledge and use of home equity lines of credit (HELOC) is putting their well-being at risk.

Some standout findings by the report are: • Most respondents used their HELOC as planned, but one in five borrowed more than intended • Most scored less than 50 per cent on their knowledge of HELOCs, • The results also show that more than 25 per cent

surveyed made mainly interestonly payments on their HELOC. But, 62 per cent of those interest-only payers expected to repay their HELOC in full within five years, an overly optimistic result considering more than three million Canadians holding a HELOC owe an average of $65,000.
