You don’t need to spend your hard-earned money on expensive storage solutions – chances are, you may have the thrifty answers in your home already!

Use what you have. Get creative.

Before rushing out to buy bins and baskets, look around your home for containers you can re-purpose.

Here are some ideas: » Use egg cartons or ice cube trays to organize earring sets, cuff links or hair accessories.

» Try empty plastic baby-wipe containers for crayons, first aid or sewing supplies, and they stack easily on a shelf. » Empty baby food jars are good for touch-up paint, spare buttons, or screws and nails. » Re-purpose a mug holder into a scarf or baseball cap holder. » Empty tissue boxes can hold plastic grocery bags or, with the top cut off, packets of gravy and instant soup. » Pre-washed salad bags are perfect for storing special occasion shoes, keeping them visible yet dust-free.

Eliminate the clothes you don’t wear to make room for new items. Use the “one in – one out”

rule: For every item you bring home, let go of one.

Is it any surprise that in 2022 – our third year in a global pandemic — interior trends are slanting towards ways to make us feel less pressured and more emotionally relaxed? Here are some of my 18

favourite interior design trends for 2022 that focus on calm.

Think of anything that feels warm and cosy, such as natureinspired surfaces (marble, stoneware and terracotta), accents such as cashmere throws and oversized pillows, vintage bulbs in your lighting fixtures, or incorporating shades of brown (chocolate, camels and caramels) into your soft furnishings, a kitchen backsplash or decorative accessories. Stay close to hues you would find in nature to create an environment that feels soothing and mimics the calming effect of the outdoors.

CREATE A MEDITATION NOOK

When it comes to maintaining a healthy sense of self, more and more people are going for an inside-out approach. A big part of that is incorporating meditation and mindfulness practice into their daily routines.

Pre-pandemic, we may have looked at taking time out of our busy days to meditate as a luxury.

Now it’s become a necessity: We need an outlet to relieve stress and develop coping mechanisms that preserve our mental health during one of the most trying times we have been through.

You can transform any room in your home into a peaceful mediation nook: Find a comfortable corner (ideally, near a window) and create a cosy sanctuary with soft floor pillows, a small carpet and a comfortable bench for sitting. Whether you meditate for three minutes or 30, carve out time in your day to focus on yourself outside of your daily distractions. Meditation works wonders in keeping us in the moment, and it can be effective in reducing our heart rates, cortisol levels and anxiety.

CREATIVE WORK-FROMHOME SOLUTIONS

Home offices are a must these days, and I don’t see this need dying down anytime soon. With many people working from home

and possibly having the option to continue once this pandemic is over, we will need to be more creative with designing our spaces to accommodate our working from home lives.

Many open-plan kitchens will reconfigure into alternative workspaces with shelves, spacesaving features and maximized corners. Kitchen nooks are the new workspace: They can work double duty as a workspace instead of the living room.

CURVED FURNITURE

Curved furniture is massive for 2022, and as we continue to shift away from cold minimalism towards cosier interiors, our furniture is also moving towards softer and curvier lines.

Organically-shaped furniture (no hard edges!) and round-edged

pieces will dominate, giving comfort and calm.

SUSTAINABLE PIECES

People have begun to shop more sustainably, and I don’t expect that to end anytime soon. Vintage is such a strong storyteller, and it has the power to create a beautiful narrative in any room. Still, aside from the inherent intrigue and history in antique furniture and pieces, vintage also supports sustainability, which we should all commit to in an even more significant way this new year.

Whether you commit to shopping locally or buy responsibly-sourced items, people are keen to stay Green as much as they can. By repurposing old, reworked or antique pieces, we reduce our footprint and create a warm environment.

ST. VITAL BETWEEN TWO RIVERS

St. Vital is a sprawling suburban area in Winnipeg wading far and wide between two rivers.

The Red River marks the west boundary and the Seine River marks the east. Carriere Avenue is the northern boundary and the rural municipality of Ritchot is the southern boundary.

Newer, amenity-oriented neighbourhoods dominate the landscape in clusters in smiling St. Vital. The suburban style of family living close to the country gets richer in the south, but all homes and residents seem fairly prosperous and settled. Old St. Vital has some francophone history, yet it’s largely overshadowed by modern cosmopolitan consumers who want to shop and live in luxury by the river.

As the middle child in a French family of three sisters, St. Vital starts out as gregariously urban with long rows of strip malls braided alongside a huge shopping mall and cosy middle-class lots near the river.

Furthest south, the landscape suddenly becomes rural, running past shops into pastures of prairie grass and corn mazes.

Professional residents know how to maneouvre around roadblocks from busy Bishop Grandin Boulevard to the farmers’ markets.

Starting out traditionally Francophone, St. Vital has grown and significantly changed over the years. Decades ago, she became 28

overwhelmingly Anglophone, but now there is a lot of variation between neighbourhoods and more ethnic diversity among new residents. More seniors typically reside along the northwest and residents with higher incomes and education are located further south.

St. Vital offers a lot for middleincome families. A smaller budget might find North St. Vital more central and affordable. Big budgets build in the south.

The growing trend toward diversity and demand for new housing has made St. Vital homeownership-competitive. With Baby Boomers retiring, there is also a growing need for multi-family homes and services. Apartments, condos and townhouses situated close to the malls and main bus

routes have much to offer with balconies, granite counters, large suites with lofts and some with a highrise view.

Traffic is constant east to west and on main cross streets, covering large expanses of land by high-speed roads. Buses are frequent, especially at the northern intersections. Pedestrians and cyclists congregate closer to the south by the mall or on residential streets. A trip to the airport could be half an hour.

Major parks and centres include St. Vital Park near the Red River, Maple Grove at the southern tip, plus Jonathan Toews Community Centre and St. Vital Centennial Arena.

St. Vital is loved by residents and visitors. The shopping is stupendous, but a car is a must.

Helping friends move Jennifer Braun The year’s most popular moving dates are coming up. I want to suggest you actually consider helping a friend move. Why? Because it won’t be as bad as you think, and your fellow renter would really appreciate it.

If a friend asks you to help them move, it does not mean you will be facilitating the entire move. In fact, I really do not suggest relying on friends for a complete move, but rather for a pair of helping hands.

There are many ways you can help with a move, including before the move, during the move and

even after the move. Getting personal belongings organized and neatly packed into boxes is actually half the work.

Moving also involves a lot of cleaning – be it the old place or the new place that still needs to be vacuumed and dusted before bringing in furniture. Then, after all that work, there’s unpacking and getting organized.

So, before you say no to helping with a move, consider asking your friend what they need help with.

Your strength at some point may be needed, but just being there to help pack, clean and organize can also be a big help. All that being said, helping friends move still isn’t the most enjoyable way to spend a Sunday afternoon. That’s why I say

keep your friends close and the friends you help move even closer – they totally owe you – including with your own next big move!

WhyThesize matters: ImporTance of scale INSPIRATION |

I

n my professional opinion, a well-designed home must meet two key criteria: the home (and everything in it) must be practical and aesthetically pleasing.

These are two areas that I focus on when kicking off a new design project for my clients. Now, you might be thinking, “Just two criteria?” Don’t be fooled by your perceived simplicity of a number. A lot of planning goes into achieving fashion and function. One of them is scale.

The rules of scale apply to everything in the space, in relation to the space itself. Furniture, light fixtures, art and accessories all have to work within the proportions of a room to achieve

the perfect fit. When everything is scaled to the space, your home will feel like a well-tailored suit.

Pieces that are too large or too small can create visual awkwardness and physical inefficiencies. Here are three common victims of measuring missteps.

Area Rugs

Area rugs don’t get the attention they deserve, and they’re certainly not a first focus for measureminded folks. Big mistake! Area rugs are important because they define “zones” and anchor everything in them.

Oftentimes people will look at their space, complete with

furniture in place, and “estimate” the size of their rug requirements based on the empty area between the furnishings. The result is an ill-fitting rug that floats aimlessly between the sofa and chairs.

When choosing the rightsized rug, the furnishings of your zone–be it a conversation area in the living room or a small reading nook in the bedroom–should be large enough to accommodate at least the front legs of the furniture of that “zone.” For example, in the sitting area this might include a sofa and some chairs, a coffee table, a side table and maybe an ottoman. Ensure the rug isn’t butting up against the walls, leaving a gap or a few inches to create a border.

Have you heard of “tablescaping?” Try arranging accessories and collections in odd numbers–threes, fives or sevens.

Place the tallest piece at the centre and work your way out.

Light Fixtures

Light fixtures are often measured incorrectly, in more ways than one. When choosing a light fixture, ensure it is not too small.

Remember, lighting should be a focal point, so choose something that stands out, both in terms of style and scale. Like area rugs, light fixtures help to define a living area, enhance a room’s function, and highlight its focal points. Choosing an appropriately sized fixture brings balance to the room–and yes, there’s simple a formula for that! Measure the length and width of the room in feet, add the two numbers and the result, expressed in inches, is the ideal size of your light fixture. For example, a room that is 10 ft. wide by 20 ft. long would be best

suited to a fixture that measures 30 inches in diameter. If you’re choosing a fixture to hang over a table, measure the table in inches and subtract 12, which gives you the ideal diameter for your chandelier or pendant.

The second scale slip-up occurs when determining the height of suspension. As a general rule, the fixture should hang three ft. above a tabletop or six ft. from the floor.

Decor

Last but not least, art and accessories are often over- or underestimated, leaving them looking inadequate and ineffectual.

In an effort to achieve a clean and uncluttered space, people often “go small” when it comes to their decor.

The result is decor that falls short on size and visual effect. The secret to success is to be selective in your decor. Limit the number of pieces and ensure they’re big enough to make an impression.

Buyer Beware

When visiting a furniture showroom, be mindful that these spaces typically have high ceilings and vast floor area can be deceiving, so don’t trust yourself to “just eyeball it.”

Advanced planning is essential, and a tape measure your best friend.

Sketch out the room, making note of room dimensions, ceiling height, doorways, windows, focal points, and paths of traffic. While you’re at it, be sure to measure hallways, doorways, and elevators to ensure your furniture will fit through when it is delivered.

Then, get some tape and delineate where your furniture will be placed and how big each piece should realistically be. Then, shop with measurements in hand.

Work with a professional designer to ensure all your selections “measure up” in every regard. When it comes to your home, make no compromises.

Style versus comfort Style is certainly top-of-mind when decorating your home, but ignoring function and comfort is a big mistake.

Think about how you intend to use the space, and go from there. For example, having a coffee table and side tables within reach of the seating highlights the space’s functionality and convenience, and it makes the room look complete.

Slightly off-centre By no fault of homeowners, I often see the dining area light fixture off-centre to where the table should be. Rather than trying to centre the table to the fixture, place the table where it makes sense. Then, simply swag the chain of the fixture, so it’s centred to the table.

Wrong starting point When arranging your bedroom furniture, start with the bed placement first. A bed that comfortably sits in the room with side tables and a headboard is all you need. Of course, accent chairs and a dresser are excellent additions, space permitting!

Now, back up...

Nothing is worse than walking into a room and being met by the back of a big, bulky sofa. When arranging your furniture, view your pieces from every angle. Reconsider your arrangement and alternate angles to create a more pleasing and inviting furniture layout.

Following sockets and outlets Just because your cable outlet is located on a certain wall does not mean your Tv should be there. Think about what makes sense to how you plan to use the room, and its natural focal point. Remember, unsightly cables can be re-routed or covered.

Maintain good balance Ensure your furnishings are equally distributed to maintain balance. This doesn’t mean you have to go completely symmetrical; it’s more about the visual weight of your furnishings and how it’s distributed.

Focus!

A focal point is the initial point of interest when you enter a room. your main seating area should always have a focal point, whether it’s a window, a fireplace or an archway/opening into another room. If you don’t have one, you can create one using a piece of art or furniture, such as a beautiful console table.

Forgetting flow and function When arranging furniture, consider how you will enter, exit and navigate the room.

For living rooms, make sure that you can easily get in and out of seating areas without having to awkwardly dodge furnishings.

kathryn kusyszyn Employers check references, landlords check references, and if you’re considering someone as a roommate, you should check their references, too. A person can seem charming initially, then later on turn into a nightmare. Do your homework and avoid such situations.

Have a rental application form that’s appropriate for your province. It will cover all the bases.

Discuss how they feel about overnight visitors, smoking, pets, sharing household chores and other mutual responsibilities. Ask

why they left their last place and how long they lived there.

The application should ask for references from a current employer, a previous landlord and at least one previous roommate.

By providing contact info, the prospective roommate is giving you permission to contact them.

When calling an employer, state that you are verifying the potential roommate’s employment status and character, not doing an employment check. Ask previous landlords how long the person lived there, whether they paid their rent on time and why they left.

Past roommates can be revealing. Ask how long they have known the person and how long they lived together.

Ask what they liked and disliked

about living with them and why they went separate ways.

If someone cannot provide any references or if none of their references are forthcoming, beware.

You will be living with this person in close quarters and relying on them to fulfil their responsibilities. You need to have a reasonable comfort level with them.

Be selective, and with some searching, you will find the right match.
