Like most everyone else, I hate change. I’m a creature of habit and I find comfort in routine. But these are changing times we’re living in and adapting to the situation is imperative for our own sanity and even survival. Edmonton’s homebuilding industry has proven its capability to adjust to the times and business has stabilized enough to become the new normal. But some are going way beyond a mere return to status quo.

Our cover feature is a case in point. The Beaverbrook Group of Companies has taken the leap to rebrand in the middle of COVID-19 plagued 2020, taking faith that its more than 25year history will carry them through the metamorphosis to its new brand name: Cantiro. We spoke to its CEO and Founder, George Cantalini, and he says the time is right for the change that brings their varied interests – including the former Dolce Vita Homes and Beaverbrook Communities – under a unified brand of Cantiro. Another sign of changing times is the virtual celebration event that BILD Alberta recently held. The online event took the place of its gala event held annually in Jasper celebrating the best of the best in the provincial industry. Congratulations to all the winners, the majority of whom were from the Edmonton region this year, including Milestone Group of Companies and Accent Infill and the Edmonton-arm of Brookfield Residential, which took home major awards. But with all our divisions operating under different names and visual identities, many of our customers

Cantiro (pronounced: kanTEE-ro) will be operating as one brand with the following divisions: Cantiro Homes (formerly Dolce Vita Homes and MODA Townhomes), Cantiro Communities (formerly Beaverbrook Communities); Cantiro Commercial (formerly Beaverbrook Commercial) and Cantiro Residential Rentals for their upcoming residential rental portfolio.

For over 25 years, Beaverbrook has forged a path to success, producing about 200 homes per year in 10 communities in Edmonton and surrounding areas, including Spruce Grove and Leduc.

The story behind Cantiro is simple. It is an homage to Cantalini’s mentor, Tony Cairo, that combines their surnames.

Cantalini says it’s a way of

honouring his mentor who had instilled in him the values and spirit of entrepreneurship that remain fundamental to the company today.

Life in the new normal requires innovative ways of thinking; Qualico Communities is up for the challenge, as the renowned land developer introduces a new, fun way of unveiling their newest show homes in Meadowview in Leduc.

“Given today’s climate of Covid-19 we had to rethink a traditional Grand Opening. How could we bring people to the community and view the show homes while keeping everyone safe?” says Kimberly Walker, marketing coordinator at Qualico Communities Edmonton.

“Enter our first community scavenger hunt! With a set of clues, people will tour through Meadowview from October 9-19, to hunt for answers. Each answer will be an entry with up to six entries for our grand prizes, a $500 VISA or $500 Skip the Dishes gift card,” she says.

For a bonus prize, people will “tour” through the brand-new single-family show homes by watching a video and answering a question on one of the show homes. “Virtually touring customers through the builders show homes is a fantastic way to showcase the beautiful interiors from a distance,” Walker says.

Recently, Edmonton City Council voted to adopt a new Municipal Development and Transportation Master Plan called the City Plan.

This plan is a roadmap for how the city will grow and welcome new residents, eventually becoming a city of two million people. The City Plan is a visionary document that re-imagines Edmonton’s future and focuses in on the key roles that housing and transportation will play throughout the city.

One point of particular interest is the City’s target of 50 per cent of new units to be added through redevelopment city wide. This ambitious target means that there will be a large focus on density within existing city boundaries. The Plan also imagines this density to be concentrated around a network of nodes and transportation 50

corridors, an integrated system which is intended to create a more compact and efficient urban form.

The City has already made excellent strides to encourage new development in existing neighbourhoods. Through projects such as the Missing Middle Zoning amendments, the City has removed barriers to redevelopment. This allows for a diversity of medium scale housing types such as townhouses, walkup apartments, and courtyard housing. In addition, the Zoning Bylaw amendments allow for Open Option Parking which removed the requirement for parking minimums, opening the door for innovation and costsavings in housing and businesses.

The City Plan will inform future amendments, as it provides direction for the multi-year, comprehensive overhaul of the Zoning Bylaw.

This is an exciting time for the city to make bold changes.

The City Plan allows for the City

and industry to come together to achieve common goals and build a City that is livable and affordable for Edmontonians. As the City begins to implement this new vision, and the residential construction industry works to navigate it, the plan will also need to be flexible so it can respond to both economic and market conditions, which includes consumer choice.

The City plan provides a wonderful opportunity for increased housing innovation and the residential construction industry remains committed to building and developing a variety of communities and houses for Edmontonians to call home for decades to come.
