It was an amazing night of renewing acquaintances, seeing old friends, and reaffirming the resilience of Edmonton’s new home building industry. Yes, the recent 2022 Awards of Excellence in Housing was a stunning success and marked a big return to the glory for the Canadian Home Builders’ Association – Edmonton Region (CHBA-ER).

Coventry Homes won big that night, taking in not only the Builder of the Year – Large Volume prize, but also the Leadership Award, along with a couple of new home awards and sales and marketing wins to go with it. Our cover story reveals how this remarkable Edmonton-based homebuilder feels about the win and how they have been able to stay on top.

We have coverage of the awards too, see if your favourite builder or developer made the winners’ list.

We’re in the middle of what’s shaping up to be a strong spring homebuying season, and our story on homebuilder design centres will inform readers of the process they will go through when they make their selections for finishes. Coventry Homes wins big at 2022 exCellenCe in Housing AwArds

by PePPer rodriguez Coventry Homes is no stranger to winning industry acclaim but taking home Builder of the Year-Large Volume honours at the 2022 CHBAER Excellence in Housing Awards is a special one, indeed!

Since winning its first Builder of the Year Award in 1990, the Edmontonbased homebuilder has amassed a huge collection of industry awards and recognition for the company and its CEO Henri Rodier, including the prestigious CHBA Awards of Excellence, Leadership Award in 2020 and 2022.

But winning this award particularly this year – after the difficult challenges of 2020 and 2021 – is gratifying, and Rodier says the award is a validation of the work done by everyone in Coventry Homes.

“This award is a great source of pride for us. It speaks volumes about the talent, dedication and hard work put in by each and every one

of our team members every day,” he tells Edmonton New Home + Condo Guide.

“We’re honored to win against such amazing competitors, and would like to especially thank our trade partners, suppliers, employees and clients for their continued support and trust.

Without an extensive team of truly talented individuals and supportive partners, none of this would have been possible.”

He continues that the award not only validates the work they do in the building and designing of homes but the customer service they proved to their clients, as well.

“The award is not only based on the quality of our build, but a large

piece of the award is also based on customer service, of which we pride ourselves on,” Rodier says.

Coventry Homes is never one to sit on its laurels. Indeed, innovation has always been a key part of its growth.

Some recent advancements have included integrating smart home technology in each of the homes they offer; an online client portal that allows buyers to keep track of the building process for their home; and virtual tours that were particularly key during the lockdown days, and which are now available for each of their showhomes and many quick possession homes.

They also put in place interactive renderings of kitchens bathrooms and exteriors, which allows the homebuyer to test out many of Coventry Homes’ selections and colour pallets before buying. The Lifestyle Packages they offer are worked on constantly and are ever evolving to take into account customer feedback.

Just introduced are the Radiant One and Watch Dog Lifestyle Packages. The Radiant One makes it easier than ever for homebuyers to go solar. Every system comes with 335 W High Efficiency Canadian Solar Modules with black frames, Albertamade fully galvanized racking system, Battery and Vehicle Ready Premium Inverters and much more.

Buyers can pick and choose how many features they can include in the home, says Coventry Homes’ Director of Marketing & Design, Tara Van Horn.

“Our solar services include securing permits, creating designs, installing solar panels on your home, and providing maintenance, if needed.”

Watch Dog, meanwhile, gives homeowners easy access to their home security. This package includes three, 2 Mega Pixel, infrared capable security cameras, 1 terabyte camera recording storage device, remote viewing capable for mobile devices and programmable recording hours of operation. Professional installers determine what your needs are for your security system and design it to fit your purposes,” she adds.

Growth remains on the horizon for Coventry Homes, and they constantly strive to be the best homebuilder in Edmonton.

This year, they are working on five new showhomes in the communities of Easton in Spruce Grove, Nouveau in St. Albert, as well as in Keswick Landing, Uplands and River’s Edge.

“We are very excited to be able to showcase two brand new home designs this year. The Ara and the Lyra will be making their debut,” Rodier adds.

“We will also be highlighting a brand-new Oilers Fan Cave, which will have a much different look and feel than anything we have done before!”

Coventry Homes also won this year for their Odessa showhome in Riverside for Best Single Family $350,000 to $400,000, and Kalliope in Griesbach for Best Single Family $600,000 to $700,000.

Van Horn says Coventry Homes brought on eight new showhomes last year including the two that won at this year’s awards.

The group’s Impact Homes division, which focuses solely on single-family detached garage homes, was also nominated in three categories and won all of them.

Winning awards, gratifying, as they may be, is never the point at Coventry Homes.

“While we are honoured to be recognized in this way, it is more important for the community that we serve to know of the hard work we put in improving the lives of Edmontonians – not just through the homes that we build – but in strengthening the bonds of the community itself,” Rodier says.

Coventry Homes currently builds in 15 new communities in the Edmonton area, offering well-designed, lifestylefocused single-family and multifamily homes. Rodier knows the value of hard work, having come up from the trades. “I started swinging a hammer a number of years ago,” he says, and he knows that in every challenge there is opportunity.

“Being prepared is always the best course of action. You can’t always 10

see what’s coming down the road, but having a culture of hard work in the company goes a long way in preparing for those difficulties.” The ability to adapt has been central to their success, and Rodier also believes that his inherent optimism - of “choosing to see the bright side” – is the only way to survive and to lead.

WHAT’S HAPPENING On Saturday, April 2nd, the Canadian Home Builders’ Association - Edmonton Region honoured some of the industry’s best at their annual Awards of Excellence in Housing gala. The 2022 awards welcomed guests back to an in-person event, which took over the Shaw Conference Centre with a Roaring Twenties theme. Dream centres: where home Design visions come true

Building a new home is like building a puzzle. Especially when it comes to composing the finishes that will make up the look of your home.

Finding the pieces that match is the easiest way to go about it, and it helps if the pieces are collated in one place.

And this is exactly the purpose of the homebuilders’ design centres.

It used to be that homebuyers had to go all over town to find their flooring, cabinetry, countertop, lighting fixtures and everything else that makes a house a home. But with these centralized desgn centres, what was once a tedious, overwhelming process has been simplified.

Design centres allow homebuyers to choose their finishes with ease, and not have to wonder if the flooring they selected at one store will match the cabinetry they picked at another.

These in-house facilities – usually located in the home offices of the builder – centralizes the entire selection process, creating a onestop-shop where homebuyers can more easily find the combination of

finishes that will complete their vision for the home.

Each builder has their own unique methods to make their clients’ dream home become a reality. We take a look at the processes employed by some of Edmonton‘s most recognizable homebuilder names: Coventry Homes, Qualico Communities’ design, and Homes by Avi. They all have evolved their processes to turn what could be a stressful experience into something a more fulfilling and even fun.

Coventry Homes

Its Builder of the Year win at the 2022 CHBA-ER’s Excellence in Housing Awards proves again the complete customer package that Coventry Homes offers its clients. Their meticulous yet fun design process is a key part in the builder’s success.

centre to come up with the look for their home. They encourage inperson appointments, which invariably gets the best results. “Buyers get a true colour accuracy and product representation.”

Coventry’s process starts weeks in advance, where the designers will go over the final floorplans in great detail. “Once clients arrive at the Choices design centre, we discuss needs, lifestyle and most importantly, budget. From there we move to reviewing floorplans and cabinetry with our clients. Once the cabinet layout is done, we turn to the fun part

designQ

– selecting cabinet colours, profile and countertops. Then onto flooring.”

The Choices by Design selection centre offers a wide range of standard and upgrade options to suit every style, and budget. “We are passionate about designing homes that are both flexible and affordable, and work with real people and their lifestyles,” she says. “We also believe that high grade finishes and fixtures should be ugrades and therefore you will find popular items such as quartz countertops, high quality flooring, and popular tile options within our standard offering.”

She reminds buyers that they have a responsibility too in making the selection process as painless as possible. “We have a total of 13 showhomes in and around the city, including 8 stunning new designs.

Homebuyers are encouraged to tour the showhomes (virtually or in person) to get an idea of the style and look they want to achieve.”

designQ is the in-house design centre for Qualico Communities Edmonton, and they are the one-stop-shop for all its three homebuilding divisions: Pacesetter Homes, Sterling Homes and StreetSide Developments.

Despite the heavy workload, designQ gives their clients every chance to succeed in their selctions by dividing the design centre into two distinct areas, says designQ marketing manager, Melissa London.

such as flooring, countertops, etc.

The ‘Shop’ portion of designQ is optional to builder clients, as well as the general public. Here we assist clients in selecting their interior comforts, such as wall features, blinds and drapery, furniture and décor.”

London breaks down their process.

She says when the clients are writing up the home contract with their area sales manager, they are able to include an allowance (basically a gift card if you will) to spend for their interior selections at designQ. “This amount will form part of the purchase price, and therefore be included in the mortgage. Clients are now able to also include an allowance for items such as blinds, drapery, wallpaper and wall features.

These items are purchased through our designQ Shop, which is a separate appointment to the interior selections. These items can form part of the mortgage as well, so no additional costs are required after you move in for these items.”

London says clients get a four-hour appointment with a professional Interior Designer to help them coordinate their blinds/ drapery/wall features with the rest of the selections in their home.”

She adds that an advantage about selecting the above items with designQ Shop, is that typically, depending on stage of construction, “we can have them all installed before moving in.”

2021 was an interesting year for interior design. We saw lots of new interior design trends including more traditional looks, fluting and wallpaper everywhere. Many of the styles that were popular in 2021 won’t stay that way for long, here’s 10 of them that are for sure on their way out.

1. Modern Farmhouse Market is saturated with Fixer Upper’s Joanna Gaines style, and when a trend oversaturates the market it tends to fade away.

2. Open Kitchens Yes - the open concept dining/kitchen is on its way out. The pandemic solidified a need for separate rooms, and more home offices.

3. Mid Century Modern Meets Boho Mid century modern has reigned for years, more recently combining with Boho. In the future neither is going away, but moreover heading towards purity of mid-century modern. Like anything popular, we tire of the same and are looking for fresh, new ideas. Mid-century is no different. Most designers are turning Modern towards bold colours and textures of the 1960s and 1970s.

4. Minimalism I believe we’ve also run this course through and through. Less is finally less. 2022 we’ll see a return to thoughtful, warm, inviting and cozy spaces.

I believe a home should tell a story and be a reflection of the homeowners who live there.

5. Monochromatic - all white interiors The days of monochromatic looks are on their way out. We are spending more time in our homes and tire of the ever present all white kitchens and I couldn’t be more thrilled.

White is lovely, but it needs colour to be truly stunning. People are reevaluating how they furnish, decorate and layer artwork in their homes. They want the details too. We can expect details like pleats, scallops and tailoring. I believe linear is on its way out too. I foresee warm neutrals and lots of textures replacing stark white decor.

6. 1970s Inspired Wall Hangings Macramé wall hangings have been all the rage the past couple of years, these too are on their way out.

7. Stainless Steel Kitchen Hood Fans Essential for years, the stainless hood fan are tired, and made their statement years ago. I haven’t specified one for years so this trend won’t be missed. I look for unique ways to bring in more texture or charm by going with plaster, or millwork for my hood fans.

8. Copycat Interiors YouTube, Instagram and Tiktok are great resources - but many people are outright copying the looks they see on these platforms without putting their own design spin on it. It has always been my hope to see truly inspired and original spaces from designers, I say good riddance to copycats and let’s bring on the originality!

9. Black Hardware Black hardware dominated in 2021, but its going to look dated in 2022. I tend to spin my metal materials into an eclectic mix so it doesn’t get dated as a trend.

10. Faux Design From wood tile and vinyl floors to marble porcelain, faux design has been huge for years. Although these materials are budget-friendly, unfortunately they tend to be poorly installed, which only hurts the home-owner and the value of their home. There will be a big push to go back to natural in all things home for 2022. Genuine materials will replace faux in 2022, and I for one will embrace it.
