We welcome 2022 tucked in a warm cocoon of blankets as bed weather sets in. We thought the frigid circumstances of early January might be a great setting for starting a conversation about bedroom design. We feature the unique look rising Canadian interior design star, Louis Duncan-He, can give to the bedroom – heck, any room – with his tips on how to cosy up the style. These designs are sure to make you want to stay in the bedroom even when the temperature isn’t hovering below -20 degrees C. What hasn’t been cold is the Edmonton housing market, which continues to burn bright through 2021 and seems poised for a repeat this year. Sherwood Park is a perfect example of this kind of dynamic growth, and we get to explore the Strathcona County hamlet just east of Edmonton and find out what locals love about living here. We also start the year with a story on the new home design trends that homebuilders have introduced recently. Flex space seems to be the order of the day, as more new homeowners – and not just single-family homeowners, but for apartment condos and townhomes, as well – opt for the extra space for home office or den to accommodate the prevailing work-at-home lifestyle. of the art of design. From scale and proportion, to balance and harmony, to colour theory – these principles highlight that there is indeed a very technical side to the process, which can be acquired through theory and practice.

Still, the heart and soul of design is not something that can be easily extracted from a book.

Great designers not only design with precision, but also with an incredible amount of energy, creativity and spirit. You can feel the difference when you step into a space that was designed with a deeper intention in mind.

As a designer, my mandate is to thoughtfully reveal the authentic aspirations of each client to create spaces that are rich in spirit and restorative to the soul. Although the process and end product may vary for each homeowner, here are my top 5 things to always keep in mind ahead: 1. Focus on a Feeling

When we start working with clients, this is one of the first and most important exercises we go through. We ask them to come to the design briefing with a variety of inspiration photos that

We all love looking at a beautifully designed room. The impact of flow, form and function in a space can be transcendent. As we face another New Year – particularly after two years of unique and acute challenges, globally, and often, as a result, individually-the comfort we get from a well-designed space can be indescribable. You cannot put words to the comfort, warmth, serenity, or restorative quality of a beautiful room. It is just something that you feel.

As designers, we learned the fundamental building blocks

elicit an immediate reaction or feeling. It should be visceral: it either moves you, or it doesn’t.

It doesn’t matter if you love a specific sofa or armchair in a living room reference. What’s important is to try and nail down the overall intention and sentiment of the space, because without this key piece of information, it’s hard

to actually design with much meaning and purpose.

2. get personal

Whether you’re working on your own or with a designer, get very personal. During the onboarding process, a good designer will ask questions in a variety of different ways, trying to get to the root

behind your aspirations. If we aren’t getting anywhere with straightforward questions, we may pivot to exploring areas like art, music, travel. Ultimately, it’s not about trying to identify the exact shade of colour you want.

Rather, why are you drawn to the colour in the first place? Because in understanding the underlying desire and reason behind a choice, it becomes much more impactful.

3. Find balance

Balance and harmony can be brought into a room in so many different ways. It can be as simple as highlighting overall symmetry, or utilizing the principles of Feng Shui, or focusing on harmonizing the five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, water). The point is, finding a way to create balance and harmony in a way that visually makes sense to you will add calmness and a restorative quality to your home nexthome.ca 9

4. go natural

Finding ways to incorporate natural and organic elements into your home is always soothing to the soul. You may want a very rustic looking space containing wood with a live edge. Bring in a soft alpaca throw or add subtle fluted wood detailing accents or piece of furniture.

5. Follow your heart

We often intuitively know exactly what we want, so instead of trying to create an endless array of the “why it won’t work”, focus on ways to work with your overall vision and bring it to life. Usually having this sense of direction and conviction is the best way to enter into a partnership with a designer.

Because it’s not a designer’s job to think for you. Rather, it’s our job to help edit and bring a certain level of focus to the project, to help bring your ideas to life in the most beautiful and meaningful way possible.

Working from home increased the need for flex spaces not only in single-family homes where they are expected, but in the multi-family sector as well.

But the need to please the senses is still as important and establishing an emotional tie with the homebuyer through stylishly staged showhomes remains key.

Plank says developing secondary suites have become important to their buyers for rental income or to accommodate extended family. We are hoping to develop more floorplans that accommodate this upgrade,” she adds.

by PEPPER RODRIGUEZ The name Sherwood Park certainly sounds like a fairy tale town, and with its idyllic nature and romantic allure it can definitely live up to it. But what this hamlet of Strathcona County has become for many is a viable homeowning option where they can find their happily-ever-after.

The community of Sherwood Park is located just east of Edmonton. It is a community that has seen tremendous growth over the past two decades with well over two-thirds of Strathcona County residents residing here.

Growth is the abiding promise in Sherwood Park. Even now, there are several ongoing residential developments that make it the perfect place to put down roots in. There is the ambitious Centre in the Park at the heart of the community, Aspen Trails and Summerwood to its north, and Salisbury Village and the Sherwood Golf & Country Club to the south.

AFFORDABILITY AND ACCESSIBILITY

Doherty says that Sherwood Park had been a haven for senior living in the past, and it continues to be with several 55+ living facilities available, including the new Emerald Hills Landing that offers studio apartments up to twobedroom-plus den suites.

But Doherty says younger families are now becoming more prominent in the hamlet, attracted by the affordable housing, plentiful amenities and easy-living lifestyle Sherwood Park offers.

“Average housing price is about $465,000, and you get a lot more home for that price here compared to Edmonton,” Doherty says. Those working in the city will find its accessibility a big factor as well as Sherwood Park is just about a 25-minute drive to Edmonton’s downtown. “We’re also just half an hour drive to the international airport,” Doherty says.

Residents have a wide choice of housing options to choose from, including multi-family housing,

single-family, and executive estate homes. The largest growth of structure type between 2011 and 2016 continues to be singledetached homes with 1,265 new homes added. The second largest growth in structure types was in low-rise apartment buildings (fewer than five storeys) and semidetached homes.
