his issue showcases the winners in this year’s RenoMark Renovation of the Year Awards. Categories include bathrooms, kitchens, exteriors, outdoor structures, additions, basements and whole home renovations. These homes were transformed by professional renovators who pride themselves on working by the elevated standards and practices as outlined by the RenoMark program. This award program is a significant initiative for several reasons. First of all, it is truly inspiring to see the dramatic makeovers these homes have experienced. This in turn motivates us to imagine how our own homes can be modified. Further, this award program demonstrates the kind of talent and experience we have right here in our great city. We are not second rate. In fact, these renovators are operating at the highest professional standards in Canada. Several of the award categories revolve around the development of new living space. This addresses one of the most common complaints people have about their homes, which is lack of space. As the number of our possessions increases, available space decreases. Many of us are now finding ourselves working at home and require an adequate place to set up an office. Perhaps our family is growing and subsequently outgrowing our home. For some, the solution is to move to a larger home. This however, can be very costly and disruptive. Alternatively, a large number of homeowners decide to stay and build an addition and/or develop their basement. If you love your home and neighborhood, this could be the solution for you. Just be sure to work with professionals who will ensure that your renovation is a success.

Decorating your bedroom last is a common faux-pas. Really, the opposite should be true. Your bedroom is the first thing you see in the morning, and the last place you curl up each night. So, it should be a space that makes you happy and where you enjoy spending time. I recently worked on a bedroom that completely lacked inspiration. In a house where the rest of the rooms were stylish, functional and inspiring, this revamp was long overdue. Read on to find out how I created a dream bedroom makeover.
PAINT COLOUR To start, I always recommend a paint colour that you love; choose one that gives you a serene, relaxing feel and that speaks to you personally. For this space, I chose Benjamin Moore’s (benjaminmoore.com) Wickham Gray HC-171. It was the base that started to bring this room to life.
DESIGNER TOUCH Every room needs interest and dimension, and the bedroom is no exception. I made this room a designer’s dream by creating a wall treatment using great trim products from Metrie (metrie.com), which gave the space an elegant feel.
STANDOUT PIECE A fireplace is the perfect addition to a bedroom setting and this electric unit adds the perfect ambiance. This fireplace is a Dimplex (dimplex.com) unit that took the homeowner only 25 minutes to unload, unpack and set up! While the fireplace alone is eye-catching, we didn’t stop there. We had a custom build-up created with a mantel to make the fireplace really stand out. I used Metrie products again and matched the existing crown moulding to the new unit. And for the finishing touch on the mantel, some great artwork and accessories from HomeSense (homesense.ca) really pulled it all together.
MATTRESS No bedroom is complete without a bed – it is the most important functional piece in the room. In this space we used a Casper mattress (casper.com), which was delivered in a box right to the homeowners’ front door. It’s a great option for city dwellers and people without cars. Plus, it’s extremely comfortable! I paired that with the headboard and bed frame from my Jo Alcorn Collection (alcornhome.com).
LINENS This is where you can have some serious fun with patterns, colour and texture. I started with crisp white sheets, pillows and pillow cases from Casper and topped it off with a subtle duvet cover from HomeSense. From my Jo Alcorn Home Collection, I used pillows to incorporate the exact texture and finishing touches that are perfect for this room.
LIGHTING Don’t forget about lighting… and darkening. You need to make sure you have the perfect lighting for reading and relaxing, but darkness is a necessity for sleeping. In this bedroom, the side table lamps and curtains were purchased from Wayfair (wayfair.ca). A stroll through Bouclair Home (bouclair.com) led to the perfect ceiling light. Sometimes wandering through a home store will inspire your creativity and help you find those unique pieces that can complete a room.
PRACTICAL ELEMENTS I often add a bench to the end of the bed. It looks great and is the perfect place to pile your decorative pillows and throw at night when you turn in. For this space I used this stylish white bench from Bouclair Home (bouclair.com), which fit perfectly into the space and budget.

DEPOSITS: What to pay and when

lthough this is a renovation advice and guidance column, let me first of all say, wow, what a great Jets season and congratulations to the team for an outstanding year and the thrill of the ride for the City of Winnipeg. Just as thrilling however for you at this time of year, is the renovation you may now be undertaking and the excitement of how it’s all going to turn out. As you begin your negotiations with your contractor and start reviewing the contracts and expectations, there’s always that one line that makes you nervous and that is the request for deposits and should you or shouldn’t you, or is it an appropriate amount. I have participated in so many conversations about this topic, read advice, seen the so called TV renovator experts exude their opinions on it and I can tell you that not only are deposits appropriate, but very necessary. There is no other product or service in the consumer world where you can get someone, in this case a General Contractor, to provide services or product without you making a financial commitment to the project as well. It is assumed you have done your homework in selecting

you contractor, reviewed their website, seen and received references and believe in and trust who you are working with. Our industry, due to no real regulations or certifications, has a bad reputation and I am afraid that it is sometimes justified due to lack of regulations. There’s even a TV show called “Catch a Contractor,” which I’m sure scares people from ever doing anything. But, again, if you have done your homework and research you should have no worries. That being the case, you need to realize that contractors are not financiers and nor should they be expected to be. The deposit given certainly does not go into the contractor’s pocket. In today’s contracting world everyone wants deposits, so the first thing they have to do is pass on those deposit monies to the suppliers and sub-trades who are asking for up front deposit money as well. It should not be on your contractor to lay out all those funds on your behalf without some participation from the client. So what is an appropriate amount? That’s a conversation you should have with your contractor to determine what they need to get your project going. It also depends on what the payment schedule is and the type of contract you are working with, cost plus or fixed price, but for a rule of thumb I feel that 25% of the total budget is an appropriate value and up from there depending on what the contractor has to lay out up front. Good luck with all your summer projects and let’s hope the Blue Bombers bring us as many thrills as the Jets did! WHEN MAKING THE DECISION TO MOVE or renovate, there are often more than bricks and mortar to consider – a great neighbourhood, access to favorite shops and parks; all are factors that make the case for staying. Homeowners Bev and Duayne were at that point. “We were debating between moving or renovating because the house was starting to look quite dated. We looked around at houses that were for sale, and came to the conclusion, that no matter where you moved you’re still probably going to have to do some work. And we really liked our yard. We’ve done a lot of work on it; we like the size of it so we didn’t really want to leave the property,” says Bev.
With the decision made, the couple sourced Doreen Gauthier, President, Make It Home Ltd. (Master Renovator) to make a plan to breathe new life into their Island Lakes two-storey built in 1994.

To get things rolling, Doreen encouraged Bev to find an inspiration photo to guide the process as well as start noticing different finishes that appealed to her. The transformation began in the foyer entrance with the installation of a new fibreglass door and side-lite stained in graphite colour. The wooden handrails of the hardwood

The adjacent dining room was outfitted with modern clean edge built-ins. “It was such an unused space so I thought if we got the built-ins, we’d use it more,” says Bev. The previous kitchen received a major makeover with the skillful use of contrasting finishes and cabinet placement. The kitchen cabinets are shaker-style painted maple in BM

- Vanilla Milkshake and the dark cabinets are natural walnut veneer with a flat profile and horizontal grain. Countertops and island are both quartz solid surface. The pewter cabinetry handles offer a subtle counterpoint to the LED lights that illuminate the island and dining area. “These fixtures are so much fun!” says Doreen. “They feel modern and add a really special mood to the space.” In considering the backsplash, Bev says, “I really didn’t want to have a lot of grout so we went with very large 18” by 36” porcelain tiles with a polished sheen marble effect that gives the look of a solid surface.”

cabinets flanking the new Cosmo fireplace surround that refers to the kitchen backsplash with a smaller porcelain tile in matte finish. “The fireplace, floating shelf, TV and Sonos system were all designed at specific heights to ensure excessive heat does not reach the electronics,” says Doreen. It seems this renovation even pleased the couple’s cats with an opening in the basement door to the litter box and another in the closet door to get to the food dish! Bev and Duayne are certain they chose the right person for their renovation. “Doreen is a great listener and takes the time to understand what we wanted. She always provided
feedback and was very receptive to what we wanted and how we were going to use the space. We will recommend her, no question!” says Bev. Doreen loves helping clients find their own design aesthetic. “I offer suggestions, but the client chooses what they are drawn to and what fits their overall budget. THE MANITOBA HOME BUILDERS’ ASSOCIATION recognized the best renovation projects undertaken in Manitoba over the past year at the MHBA’s annual RenoMark Renovation of the Year Awards. This year, entries were featured in six different award categories – Additions, Kitchens, Bathrooms, Exteriors, Whole House and Basement. Each projected nominated for the RenoMark Renovation Awards is as stunning display of what professional renovators can do in terms of updating and upgrading your home. The Awards were handed out during an evening reception held at the Victoria Inn in Winnipeg on May 3, 2018. This year, 44 different projects by 13 outstanding MHBA RenoMark renovators were nominated for awards. Each entry consisted of before and after photos, blueprints and drawings, a detailed description of the work done, design details and any additional information that might contribute to this comprehensive package. Judging was done by a panel of judges who reviewed every entry in every category. Projects done by Manitoba renovators have also been recognized as some of the best done in Canada over the past year. Harwood Design Builders Ltd. from Winnipeg had 7 projects nominated as finalists for the Canadian Home Builders’ Association’s Awards for Housing Excellence. Having 7 projects recognized as some of the best renovations done in Canada over the past year is a tremendous accomplishment and showcases the great work done by professional renovators right here at home. Everybody has something that they have been longing to improve in their kitchen. Bathrooms are being updated and modernized for comfort and practicality on a regular basis. This client had a garage with a small breezeway that led to the back door of their home. The overhead door was a 90 degree turn from their driveway. It was a poor design, so the clients wanted to utilize the garage for extra living space. We added on to the breezeway to connect the garage to the home. The floor was jackhammered out to allow for proper drainage, as well as new insulated floor joists. Electrical service was upgraded, spray foam and Roxul insulation, new windows installed, new drywall, flooring, and paint. New modern furnishings make this additional space beautiful!
More living space was required for a growing family, and an attached garage was desired. The existing home was in the perfect area, it just wasn’t large enough. Rather than moving, they decided to add on the space they needed. A two-story home addition was added to the rear of the home and included a mud & laundry room and attached two car garage on the main level. The second story of the addition included two bedrooms, a study, hardwood flooring, and a large bathroom with a full walk-in shower, bath tub, dual sinks, and beautifully designed floor and wall tile throughout.
This 100 + year old character home, believe it or not, still had not had a developed basement! Cold and damp, this glorified storage space beckoned to be transformed from nothing into something. Wanting to keep some of the ‘old’ showing amongst all the ‘new,’ the client’s design called for some creative thinking to make an eclectic mix work together.

Creating an open plan basement space suitable for all ages while remedying awkward layout issues challenged our design and build team to implement creative solutions. After re-working the teleposts, awkward forty-five degree angles and numerous bulkheads, the team added a fireplace, dry bar and bedroom and finished the space with durable materials; luxury vinyl plank for the floors, stacked stone around the fireplace, and a beautiful live-edge wood countertop to complete the space. Now the space is one that the whole family can use, with the added benefit of staying on schedule and within budget.
This 10 year old custom built home now has a custom built basement. Both husband and wife are professionals so making a home based office was a must. They also wanted a space that they could entertain and host parties in, as well as a place to relax with their children. A glass wall with a sliding glass door separates the office from the main living area without hindering the view. A large laundry room with tons of storage and windows to allow in natural light and a beautiful bathroom with a tile shower and guest bedroom were added.
This bathroom had some upgrading done many years ago, but was tired, and in need of some TLC! We fully gutted the bathroom and upgraded the insulation in the exterior wall. We replaced the exhaust fan with a new, more powerful unit, and installed new moisture resistant drywall on all walls and ceiling. From there, we installed a new acrylic tub and surround and new shower fixtures. We installed a beautiful floating vanity with a matching toilet topper for more storage. We installed new sheet vinyl flooring, new toilet, and built a custom storage cabinet behind the door.

The homeowner wished to update the original ensuite bathroom. The space was reconfigured to allow for the best design. Italian mosaic and wall tile created a stunning effect. The shower had multiple body sprays with independent controls; and his/hers shower heads. There was in-floor heat throughout the room including in the shower stall. The his and hers sinks had LED illumination and 3D LED illuminated mirrors above. The windows surrounding the free-standing oversize tub featured a blackout option on remote control that was imported from Germany, to allow for privacy at the touch of a button.
This ensuite bathroom, while spacious, was dark, outdated and lacked style. The completed renovation beautifully complemented the natural light and transformed the space. We brought in modern colours and unique pieces and personalized the room for our clients. Modular vanities were built to give a custom look with a quartz countertop and a linen tower atop to break the space between his and hers undermounted square sinks. Flooring was replaced in a light petrified wood style with in-floor heating through-out. The shower was designed with seamless entry, unique linear drain, built-in niche shelving and tiled through-out.
While the ensuite bathroom in this 60’s home had been recently renovated, the room was cramped and needed an update. Wall to wall marble set the tone in this one of a kind ensuite, including a floating marble shower bench with heated backrest. A crystal clear Starphire shower glass enclosure insures that every inch of this stunning retreat is within view. A tech wood floating vanity with Corion top provides ample storage and prep space for 2, while a large soaker tub and floor mounted tub filler draws the eye, offering the perfect finishing touch.

Loving the neighborhood and their large property but not loving the typical bungalow look and shape, these clients made the move to radically change the design, form & function of their home. Adding extra square footage out back allowed the new roof shapes and exterior finishes to tie everything together into one cohesive home, with an exciting new look.
This Riverview home received a full deep energy retrofit. Blueskin VP100, a premium weather-resistive barrier ideal for our Winnipeg climate was used. 3” of Roxul comfort board and a rainscreen system was then installed on the outside of the home, followed by James Hardie siding. New energy-efficient windows were installed within the insulation build-out with custom-made jam extensions, allowing for a well-sealed tie-in to the VP100 barrier. Additionally, the closer a window is kept to the interior of a home, the more energy efficient it becomes; this design maximized the overall energy efficiency of this project.
After 30 years of deterred maintenance, this galley style kitchen was gutted to the studs, and the insulation in the exterior wall was upgraded. A small closet in the hallway was removed to give the kitchen a little more space. Plumbing and electrical were upgraded, and an old window was replaced. We installed new luxury vinyl tile flooring, and new custom cabinetry was also installed. A sleek, black granite countertop was next, and new undermount sink and faucet. A custom brick-look tile backsplash was installed, and new paint job finished off this beautiful kitchen.

This small kitchen had already been updated from the original 1952 construction, but it was time again for a refresh! The dated melamine cabinets had yellowed and become dull. The layout was no longer current. We worked with the homeowner over several meetings to deliberate the layout options. We decided to place the peninsula on the other side of the room and relocate the stove. We decided on forest green for base cabinets and pantries and soft white for the uppers. Other materials used were vinyl tile flooring, maple countertops, brick backsplash and modern plumbing and light fixtures. The two-toned cabinets really modernize the space.
This Meadows kitchen was completely original. The dark oak cabinets dated the house to 1980’s. We worked with the homeowner over several meetings to deliberate the benefits of working within the existing space or repurposing one small bedroom to create a larger great room space. In the end, simplicity won out and we kept the kitchen within the existing space! We decided on an indigo blue for base cabinets and soft white for the uppers and pantries. Other materials used were vinyl tile flooring, quartz countertops, porcelain tile backsplash and modern plumbing and light fixtures. The two-toned cabinets really modernize the space!

This project successfully married modern and mid-century styles to create a bright, airy entertaining space for a busy family. By focusing on function and effective space planning, the project team transformed the space into the hub of the home, fulfilling the client’s request for a unified meeting space as well as continuity between the kitchen, dining, and family spaces and a personalized touch through finishes. Durable countertops, floors and cabinets paired with exceptional appliances and details created a timeless space sure to be utilized for generations to come.
Our goal was to create better use of the space, all while staying true to the character of this beautiful home. New hardwood floors were sanded and finished to match the existing floors. The old plywood cabinets were replaced with new, while pealing laminate counter tops made way for stunning granite, complimented by a traditional subway tile backsplash. Staying true to character, a custom oak banquette was designed and constructed, complete with hidden storage underneath. This one of kind piece of furniture creates a beautiful focal point, and is sure to be a conversation piece in this kitchen!
This client had a small concrete porch on the front of their home that was built in 1951. The porch was crumbling and was too small for even a single lawn chair. We removed the porch and framed for a new 12 foot x 28 foot deck. The client requested a deck less than 18” off of the ground, so that no railing was required. The deck is built with pressure treated lumber underneath, on concrete pads, with a beautiful grey composite material on top. This deck requires virtually no maintenance and should last the client many years.

We helped our client create an open concept kitchen design and formal type dining room by removing the partition wall and large closet between the kitchen and dining room. Our custom built-in cabinetry fit into the dated china cabinet niche area which included under cabinet lighting, tiled backsplash and a wine fridge. Our clients who enjoy entertaining and have busy families appreciate the flexible seating we incorporated into the island area. The crisp and clean pendant lighting showcases the beauty of the quartz countertops.

This rural bungalow was built in the 1990’s and appeared dark and dated on first look. There were plenty of cabinets but a long wall between the kitchen and living room separated the spaces. The homeowner only wanted to update all the finishes, but in the end decided that removing the wall would have the most impact. The items we worked on were; removal of non-loading bearing wall, new cabinets for kitchen and bathrooms, new countertops, new fireplace wall finish, new ensuite shower, new beamed ceiling, lighting and paint. Removing the separation between the kitchen and living room was key to modernize the space.
Our objective was to reconfigure the existing space and provide a much needed update to an aging home. By eliminating a wall between the great room and the kitchen, we were able to make better use of the available space and capitalize on the amazing back yard view that this home had to offer. The new kitchen boasts 2 tone maple cabinets, stunning quartz counter tops, traditional subway tile backsplash, and stainless steel appliances. Hardwood floors, pot lights, and shaker style doors were installed throughout, providing the finishing touches on the renovation that this home deserved.
Our objective with this project was to bring a much needed update, to this aging builder basic home. Updates on the main floor included additional kitchen cabinets, an ensuite overhaul, and a stunning feature wall in the great room, creating an eye catching conversation piece. Basement renovations include a custom bathroom, complete with heated floors and tiled shower. A high end wet bar, stylish office, and stunning 3D tile fireplace surround make this space as eye catching as it is functional. A series of floating bulkheads throughout, provide linear, indirect lighting, and ensure that this home truly is something special.

This whole home renovation was complete rejuvenation project on the interior as well as the exterior. This 1980s cab over was updated to today’s standards, incorporating a transitional modern feel. Walls were removed as well as upper banks of kitchen cabinets to facilitate a open concept. The entire project included an extensive interior and exterior transformation. The total renovation included, satin finished ebony stained hardwoods, custom tile, quartz counters, stainless and glass combination backsplash, soft white cabinets, wall paper accents, quartzite stone for the fireplace and brand new appliances.

The existing home was fully renovated. Existing stone fireplaces were maintained and incorporated into the new design. Two additions were built which included a fourseason sunroom, new entry, office, master suite, ensuite, and main-floor laundry. Curb appeal was enhanced through the addition of a timber-framed canopy and entry with transom. The farm-house appeal was maintained by restoring vertical wood planking, installing whitewashed wood, and utilizing reclaimed barn-wood in the master bedroom. A lowmaintenance exterior was achieved without sacrificing the overall look-and-feel of the home. New masonry matching the existing was installed, with PVC windows, James Hardie siding, and aluminum cladding.

Good cooks care about the way staples are stored in the kitchen. Karen Mordechai, food photographer, founder of Sunday Suppers, and cookbook author, has six smart suggestions. Buy in smaller quantities and avoid overcrowding. “I’ve learned over the years to purchase food in a more thoughtful manner,” says Mordechai. “Sometimes that means shopping more frequently, but I’m okay with that. I love having a refrigerator that feels approachable and inspiring.” Establish distinct storage zones. To avoid a free-for-all, store like with like to introduce predictability and order. In most fridges, the bottom shelf is the coldest zone, making it ideal for meat; beverages do well on the top shelf; vinegar-based condiments (such as ketchup and mustard) belong in the door compartments, which are less chilly. Leftovers, meanwhile, should be clustered at eye level where they’re sure to be noticed. Practice first in, first out. Adopted from grocers and other retailers, the FIFO approach ensures that what needs to be used first, such as milk that will soon expire, is stocked up front. Commit to a once-a-week fridge cleanup and clear-out. “I find this very therapeutic,” says Mordechai. “It always inspires a kitchen-sink meal or two, such as a frittata, a soup and a big salad.” Use enamel, ceramic and glass containers. Unlike plastic, they can go directly from fridge to oven to table (and your food doesn’t have to mingle with things like BPA and phthalates). Label containers with washi tape to keep track of contents and dates.

Store produce in reusable cloth and mesh bags (instead of plastic). And use your fridge properly: The high-humidity drawer is for things that wilt, such as greens, herbs and strawberries. Oranges, apples, stone fruits, avocados and other ethylene producers go in the low-humidity drawer.

If you follow our company, you know we were involved with the Renovations Show and the Home and Garden show, designing the booths for Dufresne. company designs and builds passive and net zero homes. He was referred to us by my good friends at Dufresne. Eric also entered into the Home and Garden Show and was looking for help on pulling the plan and staging together for the show. He just needed an interior designer to bounce ideas off of. It was a fantastic learning experience on passive, net zero homes and it was a team effort to create the best possible product outcome. Every time I think of net zero homes, I think of the initial

cost to construct that home and how unaffordable it would be. Talking to Eric about how he builds these homes allowed me to understand that it is totally doable and it puts high performance housing within reach of the mainstream market. The KITHOUSE, as it is called (you will understand the reasons why later) Premiere model, is a compact two bedroom home with all of the amenities expected but with one notable thing missing - energy bills. Exceptional attention to energy efficiency in the design of this home has allowed for a modest sized, roof-mounted solar energy array to generate as much energy as this home will consume throughout the year. At the core of the design is a superinsulated foam-free building envelope that provides year-
round comfort and exceptional energy efficiency, even in the harshest of climates, with a small environmental footprint. I was enthralled that he could build a home that could be a two bedroom with a good sized kitchen and living space in 600 sq. ft. We did help him with the layout to make sure we used every square inch efficiently. We also selected the materials to ensure the space felt as spacious as it is and bounced ideas back and forth on the exterior. The end result was amazing! I can see this home being used by people starting out in life who are energy conscious, or people who have land for a summer cottage and would like to get something on the land that is self-contained, low on energy consumption and easy to construct. Designer Jo Alcorn breathes new life into a dysfunctional family room. The result? Cosy living space the entire family enjoys! 1. FOCAL POINT The fireplace was the jumping-off point for this room. I converted the family’s gas fireplace to an electric one. Electric fireplaces have come so far in recent years, and it’s something I incorporate into almost all my designs now. For this space, I selected a Dimplex (dimplex.com) electric fireplace that appears so real, people have to look twice! I started with a style that would fit the room and then created a stunning built-in unit to surround it. To create the look, I used Metrie’s French Curves Collection (metrie.com).
2. TECH TALK To make this room multi-functional, I chose this amazing TV mount arm from Wayfair Canada, which allows you to pull the TV so that you can watch it from any seat in the room. I am obsessed with the Sonos (sonos.com) system, which I love having in my own home, so I naturally want all my clients to get it as well. The Sonos Playbar connects to the TV and makes everything sound better.
3. LET THERE BE LIGHT For this room, potlights were not in the budget, but good lighting was a necessity. I chose lighting from Wayfair Canada’s (wayfair.ca) home improvement category, where we paired together two affordable ceiling lights to give the impression of one large track-lighting system in the room.
4. PERSONALIZED DETAILS I love incorporating non-traditional and meaningful photos to a family’s space, especially when they are artistically taken. These photos are some of the most cherished memories from this family and all we did was upload them 48 Home Decor & Renovations | JUNE - JULY 2018
to Posterjack (posterjack.ca). Then, with a few clicks of the mouse, we chose the frame style, size and changed the photos to black and white. And, presto, they were delivered right to their home.
5. COMFORTABLE SEATING This room needed ample seating that would work for this
family of four. I chose an oversized sectional from Structube (structube.com). The great thing about this furniture is that it is super family-friendly and the prices are incredibly affordable. I was also able to add a side chair and a modern rocking chair. Since this company is so budget-conscious, I was also able to add in a gorgeous glass coffee table and raw wood side tables – all within my client’s budget.
6. FINISHING TOUCHES With all the key components in place, I went on a shopping spree at HomeSense (homesense.ca) to give this room the finishing touches it needed to be brought to life. I grabbed a multitude of throw cushions, side table accessories, pots and bowls, which gave it the elevated look I was aiming for.

6 hard-cooked eggs, peeled and coarsely chopped 4 tbsp (50 mL) light or regular mayonnaise 2 tsp (10 mL) Dijon mustard

1. In a small bowl, combine eggs, mayonnaise, mustard, chives, salt and pepper; stir well to combine.

2. In a large bowl, whisk together ricotta and eggs; whisk in milk. Add flour, baking powder and salt and stir to combine ingredients. 3. Stir in melted butter, lemon zest and thyme. 4. In a non-stick fry pan over medium heat, pour 2 tbsp (25 mL) of canola oil. 5. Using a 1 ½ or 2 tbsp (20-25 mL) scoop, drop batter into heated pan and cook until browned on the bottom, about 2 minutes. 6. Flip blinis over and cook the second sides about 1-2 minutes longer. 7. Use more oil as necessary to cook remaining blinis. 8. Let blinis cool on a wire rack. Spread egg salad on blinis and garnish with fresh thyme sprigs.
Best Chocolate Cake with Caramel Icing INGREDIENTS
MAKES 10-12 SERVINGS
½ cup (125 mL) cocoa powder 1 cup (250 mL) boiling water ½ cup (125 mL) canola oil 2 cups (500 mL) sugar 2 eggs 2 cups (500 mL) flour ½ tsp (2 mL) baking powder 1 tsp (5 mL) vanilla 1 cup (250 mL) buttermilk 2 tsp (10 mL) baking soda 1 tsp (5 mL) salt CARAMEL ICING
½ cup (125 mL) butter ¼ cup (50 mL) milk 1 cup (250 mL) brown sugar, packed 1 ¾ to 2 cups (425 – 500 mL) icing sugar
1. Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C). 2. Grease and flour 2-8-inch (20 cm) cake pan or Bundt pan. 3. In a large bowl, mix together cocoa, water, oil and sugar. 4. Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Pour batter into prepared pan(s). 5. Place in oven and cook for 35-45 minutes or until toothpick comes clean when inserted into the middle of cake. 6. In a large saucepan over medium-high heat, melt butter. Stir in brown sugar and bring to a boil for 2 minutes, stirring constantly. 7. Add milk and bring to a boil once more, stirring constantly. 8. Pour into a large mixing bowl and add 1 cup (250 mL) icing sugar. 9. Let cool for approximately 4-5 minutes. Add remaining icing sugar to reach desired consistency. 10. If icing firms up, add a bit of milk. Frost cake immediately as the icing will harden as it cools completely. 11. NOTE: if using a Bundt pan, cake will not rise to the top of the pan. Let cake cool and then ice with Caramel Icing.

in Designer Jaclyn Harper creates a dainty nursery for her daughter Evie and shares some information on how you can create your own personalized baby room There are so many things to consider when designing your baby’s nursery. Do you want it to be gender specific? Do you want furniture that will grow with your child? Is it a small space? Are you on a tight budget? I’ll stop there. It can be overwhelming for sure! I’m here to help. Let’s get you thinking about your nursery by breaking the design down into three parts.
FLOORPLAN Before you decide on a colour or finishes for your room, it’s important to consider the space that you’re working with. If you have a small nursery (like I do), I’d suggest avoiding heavy and bulky furniture items. This means opting for a crib that has thin spindles and sleek lines. Keep this in mind when shopping for your dresser and glider as well. The bigger the furniture, the smaller your room will feel. The only item this does not apply to is an area rug. I love the look of a layered rug to make a room feel cosy. There are some fantastic washable options for kids that you can throw right into the washing machine. I then like to ground the space with a large neutral rug. This can add texture and warmth to the nursery.
You can use green painter’s tape to measure out the furniture you’re sourcing. It will help give you an idea how everything will fit into the room.
COLOUR When it comes to the colour of your space, I’ve got a great rule for you to consider. I call it the 60-30-10 rule – 60 per cent will be the primary colour. For example, let’s choose white (I love a neutral white wall for any space). Then you’d choose a secondary colour at 30 per cent for the room – let’s go with pink. Lastly, your accent colour, which is your 10 per cent, could be green. I know this sounds like a strange combination, but if you look at my nursery for Evie, that’s exactly what I’ve done. This is a great colour theory for any room in your home. Also keep in mind that when it comes to colour, you don’t have to go crazy with your paint selection. Stick to areas that you can change easily such as smaller accessories. Crib sheets, throw blankets, pillows and rugs are a great place to play with colour and pattern. Bouclair (bouclair. com) has quite the selection of colourful accessories to choose from in its baby and kids’ line, but you can also use items from its regular line, which can then grow with the space.
FINISHING TOUCHES Speaking of accessories, the biggest tip I can give you would be – don’t over do it. A lot of the time, people put too many trinkets on display, which can ultimately make the space look and feel cluttered. Go for fewer items on display to finish off your nursery. For instance, I’ve decorated Evie’s nursery with simple accessories such as a curated selection of children’s books, a plush stuffie, an adorable frilly dress, potted plants and even a single pair of shoes. Now, that’s practical decor, right? The Shoe Fairy (shoefairy.ca) has an amazing selection of shoes for your nursery. I also suggest artwork that isn’t just for your baby. You’re the one who will be spending copious amounts of time in this space. Make it livable and enjoyable for you. Purchase a piece that you love – you will be staring at it a lot!

A beautifully decorated home involves more than just great furniture pieces. A proper layout will ensure your pieces look their best and the room flows – Red

Style versus comfort Style is certainly top of mind when decorating your home, but ignoring function and comfort is a big mistake. Think about how you intend to use the space, and go from there. For example, having a coffee table and side tables within reach of the seating highlights the space’s functionality and convenience, and it makes the room look complete. Slightly off-centre By no fault of homeowners, I often see condominiums and townhouses with the dining area light fixture off-centre to where the table should be. Rather than trying to centre the table to the fixture, place the table where it makes sense. Then, simply swag the chain of the fixture, so it’s centred to the table. Wrong starting point When arranging your bedroom furniture, start with the bed placement first. It’s the most important piece of furniture in the space, not to mention the biggest, meaning your options for other furniture will be limited. A bed that comfortably sits in the room with side tables and a headboard is all you need. Of course, accent chairs and a dresser are excellent additions, space permitting! Now, back up... Nothing is worse than walking into a room and being met by a big, bulky sofa back – and an ugly one at that! When arranging your furniture, always view your pieces from every angle. Reconsider your arrangement and alternate angles to create a more pleasing and inviting furniture layout. Following sockets and outlets Just because your cable outlet is located on a certain wall does not mean your TV should be there. Again, think about what makes sense to how you plan to use the room, and it’s natural focal point. Remember, unsightly cables can be re-routed or covered. Maintain good balance An unbalanced room is like a seesaw with only one person on it. It just doesn’t work. Ensure your furnishings are equally distributed to maintain balance. This doesn’t mean you have to go completely symmetrical; it’s more about the visual weight of your furnishings and how it’s distributed. Focus! A focal point is the initial point of interest when you enter a room. Your main seating area should always have a focal point, whether it’s a window, a fireplace or an archway/ opening into another room. If you don’t have one, you can create one using a piece of art or furniture, such as a beautiful console table. Forgetting flow and function When arranging furniture, consider how you will enter, exit and navigate the room. For living rooms, make sure that you can easily get in and out of seating areas without having to awkwardly dodge furnishings.

TO MULCH OR NOT TO MULCH
For years, I’ve rallied against homeowners using bright red mulch. In my opinion, red mulch in the sun is the only thing you see when looking at a garden. It overwhelms the plants. Finally, there is some science to support my dislike for the “fake” stuff. While some mulches are organically dyed, many of the new products are chemically treated, and the chemicals slowly leach into the soil. If you are determined to go for colour (there is purple and blue now too), choose a product that is safe for the environment.

BE AWARE OF BIG DECK SYNDROME
This is when homeowners invest lots of money and build a large deck or walk out on the back of the second storey of their homes. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve seen some amazing constructions done by talented contractors, but eventually, the homeowner is going to realize that their beautiful deck is a giant stage and they have just put themselves in full view of every one of their neighbours. Two tips to keep in mind – plan for privacy as part of the design and use an environmentally friendly wood. These come pre-treated in rich brown tones that look great. My personal favourite is MicroPro Sienna.
FRONT GARDEN FRUSTRATION
Every single house, in almost every single neighbourhood in Canada, has a garden jammed up against the house under the front windows. Very few of these are successful because this is a challenging spot for plants to grow. Instead of placing the garden tight to the house, move it out by two to three ft., and put a band of gravel behind it. The gravel allows you access to the home for things like cleaning windows, but it also forces you to plant forward, allowing the plants some space from the home itself. Have you planted a row of cedars to create privacy? Many homeowners have. The issue I have with them is that there are very few successful examples that are healthy, full and green. Instead, I see hedges that have one tree in the middle that has died and turned reddish-brown. Or, the hedge itself has lost all of its branches at the bottom, creating an ugly gap that we try to fill with Hosta plants or other doomed perennials. Trying to create privacy with a triangle is a tough challenge! In the case of cedar, the skinniest part is at the top, right where we need the most coverage. Instead of just a cedar hedge, try planting a pair of cedars with an ornamental pear tree. By layering trees that are different shapes, you can create more privacy significantly faster.

Gardening vs. Landscaping There’s a misconception that landscaping is the same as gardening when it comes to the value of your investment. Gardening is all about the plants and using plants to create visual interest. Adept gardeners can create impressive displays of colour and interest that can add value to a home. Landscaping includes plants and gardens, but landscaping also encompasses the manipulation of land and usable space. Landscaping includes things like outdoor kitchens, walkways, patios, decks, fences, water features and shade structures. As a result, landscaping costs are on average significantly higher than the costs involved with putting in a garden. So often homeowners set their budgets based on numbers associated with gardening and not with the true expense for landscaping. When pricing an outdoor renovation for my clients, the landscaping costs are often 10 times more than the plant budget. Before you start any outdoor work, do your pricing first and always work from a plan.

BACK WHEN I WAS LEARNING how to cook in the 1980s, there was a formality taught to young chefs. Based in French cuisine, the constant mantra was that plates must be perfect – highly manicured. In hindsight, it’s a ridiculous notion, nothing in nature is “perfect.” I’m not suggesting we shouldn’t strive for perfection with the taste of our meals. For me, I’ve always been attracted to plating styles that mirror the beautiful chaos of what ingredients look like in their natural state.
I always build a little garden wherever I live. Even if it’s just a windowsill blooming with fresh herbs, there’s something relaxing and tactile about being around ingredients in their natural state. This dish is inspired by that theme. Ridiculously simple to prepare, the fun and magic lays in how you decide to plate the ingredients. Connect with your inner child, throw rules out the window and picture your clean white plate as a painting palette. Enjoy!

Charred Matcha Salad The health benefits of matcha tea are undeniable, but it’s also a fun cooking ingredient – well-known in ice cream and other desserts, and now salad. Its gentle smoky flavour lends gorgeously to this light summer charred salad. This makes a perfect appetizer or light supper, double up your veggies for a main course. DRESSING • 2 tsp matcha tea, separate • 2 tbsp mayo • 2 tbsp Greek yogurt • 1/2 tsp salt
• 2 tbsp creme fraiche (or sour cream) • 4 green onions, chopped lengthwise and in half • 6 asparagus stalks, sliced lengthwise
• 1 baby cucumber, ran lengthwise over a mandolin • 2 tbsp green peas • 1/2 cup microgreens (I used broccoli greens) • 1/4 cup dill sprigs
INSTRUCTIONS » In a hot grill pan (regular fry pan works also) add a splash of olive oil. Gently sear off green onions and asparagus. Add a little salt and pepper while on the grill. Remove when grill marks appear. Be careful not to overcook them, you want a little crunch to remain. Remove and set aside. » In a squeeze bottle (or Ziplock bag) add 1 teaspoon of matcha tea, mayo, Greek yogurt and salt. Shake well. » Over two plates (or one if you prefer to serve family style) add small uneven-sized dabs of dressing (if you make your dressing in a Ziplock bag cut the corner and use as a piping bag). Add green onions, asparagus, rolled up cucumber, peas, microgreens and dill. Add small dabs of creme fraiche (or sour cream), sift the remaining teaspoon of matcha through a sieve (as you would icing sugar over a cake), add a few small drops of olive oil and pinch or two of finishing salt (kosher will do also).

There are three components to look for when purchasing authentic quality sheets:
1.
THE TYPE OF COTTON. Long staple cotton is considered to be the best in the world, due to the strength and softness of its long fibres. Egyptian and American Pima are two of the world’s best cottons.
2.
WHERE THE FABRIC IS WOVEN. Italian mills are the world’s foremost experts thanks to their long history of weaving and superior technology. Sheets woven in Italy, or other parts of Europe such as Portugal and Switzerland, will typically be of a higher quality than parts of the world where weaving is a more recent industry and technology is not quite as advanced.
3.
THE THREAD COUNT. Look for a thread count higher than 200 (less than 200 is called muslin), but remember, thread count is a personal preference. It’s all about determining what feel you like best. Do you prefer your sheets to feel soft or crisp? Fine or heavy? It’s up to you! What matters most is that the sheet has the very best raw materials: Long staple Egyptian or Pima cotton, and a superior weave.

EXPERT TIP: Always look for 100-per-cent long staple cotton sheets. Labels can be misleading. While numerous brands claim to use “Egyptian cotton,” their linens may contain as little as one per cent. Make sure the packaging says 100 per cent Egyptian or Pima cotton. Also, where the product is made is not necessarily where the fabric is woven. If you find a very inexpensive sheet with a really high thread count, it’s probably not pure Egyptian cotton, or has an inferior weave from a country without a long history of weaving or state-of-the-art technology.
