he end of November rolls around and then it’s a holiday marathon that doesn’t stop until we reach the finish line on January 1. Do you realize the convenience that apartment living offers over the holidays? I don’t want to hear that your apartment is small, you can’t have many people over. Au contraire. I’ve always had the home that was the holiday destination. Whether for a feast or a fête, there’s never been a lack of room – it just takes some planning. I’ve moved the furniture out of the way and rented a big table and extra chairs. Doesn’t that seem the logical thing to do for the once-a-year you need seating for 15, instead of having a dedicated dining room you rarely use? I’ve been lucky enough to live in buildings where there are party rooms. I book my dates months in advance. I’ve never had a guest list too large for the party room – and it saves me the deep clean of my own place before guests arrive. Many party rooms have upscale features like a fireplace, piano, catering kitchen and bar – even a sound system for dancing. When I go to parties at the apartments of family and friends, I always check if there’s a guest suite I can rent. They’re often available at a nominal fee. It’s so much more convenient and comfortable than a late night cab ride. Guest suites come to be like mini-vacations, especially if you’re visiting friends and family who live some distance away. I wouldn’t want to impose on my host further, so it’s an ideal solution! Apartment entertaining is also fabulous because there are no worries about parking, no last minute driveway to shovel, and most apartments are convenient to public transit so there’s no excuse for guests who don’t drive. You’re ready for holiday rental living, and we’re here to help. Our magazine and website, TheRentersGuide.ca, offer the best selection of apartments, informative articles and advice, making it easy to make your move!

5 tips for decorating

small spaces by LISA CANNING

SMALL SPACES ARE MORE AND MORE COMMON,

and making these spaces work can be a challenge. With careful space planning and ingenious multi-functional products, you can have all the function and style in any square footage. TIP #1: START WITH A RIGHT-SIZED SOFA The sofa is often a great place to start when planning a small space, as it usually takes up the most mass, and it is also the easiest piece to purchase incorrectly. A sofa that is too large in a given space can feel cumbersome. Conversely, a sofa that is too small can feel like dollhouse furniture. Luckily, many retailers make it easier to make the right choice by carrying apartment-sized, or condo-appropriate pieces, which are often smaller-scale translations of their most popular lines. And of course, many apartment/condo-sized sofas can also be purchased with a sofa bed option to give you the flexibility of creating a guest room in your small space. TIP #2: USE CLEAR FURNITURE What’s great about furniture made out of glass or acrylic is that it doesn’t take up much visual space. A ghost chair or a waterfall table will give you an instant modern update and provide great function while keeping the space feeling light. In spaces that have gorgeous large windows, place pieces that are clear directly in front, since they won’t obstruct the view. TIP #3: WALL-MOUNTED LIGHTING A layered lighting plan is something I always recommend TheRentersGuide.ca to clients, but in a small space this approach is especially advantageous. Rather than opting for a floor lamp with mass, weight and that takes up floor area, sconces give you ambient lighting while saving space. I love the architectural detail sconces provide and often use them on either end of aTheRentersGuide.ca gallery wall or sofa.

TIP #4: WORK WITH PIECES THAT ARE MULTIFUNCTIONAL In a space that might be too small for a home office, or a formal dining room, I have some great innovative products to share. The first is the Functional Coffee Table from BoConcept. At first glance, it looks like a sleek, minimal coffee table. But with an easy lift, it reveals a desk-height table and ample storage. Storage will always be an issue in small spaces, so anything that will serve a function and provide storage is a great addition. Another incredible product on the market is the Lacuna table by VNO Designs. This innovative product begins as a piece of customizable art on the wall. With the release of a latch, the art piece lowers to reveal a concealed leg and becomes a dining table for five. For people who don’t formally entertain often, or for those living in really limited space, this is a unique space-saving solution. TIP #5: WORK WITH SMART STORAGE SYSTEMS Great interior storage is just as important as utilizing multi-functional storage. Drawer dividers, shelf dividers and small storage boxes are great tools to use to increase your storage space. The more levels you can create within a drawer, the more items can be stored and easily found. I love using small stackable, acrylic storage compartments to divide my drawers. Style doesn’t stop at the exterior of a piece – allow your furniture to function at its best by investing in interior organization.

Burlington Towers Supports Clothesline

IN THE FIGHT AGAINST DIABETES! THE “FILL A TRUCK” EVENT HELD ON NOVEMBER 23 AT BURLINGTON TOWERS WAS AN OVERWHELMING SUCCESS. Donations from everyone – residents and staff alike – filled the truck with gently used clothing, household goods and small appliances. “From floor to ceiling,” says Jason Rodrigue, Hamilton Operations Manager, National Diabetes Trust (NDT). “It was a nice turn out and the people at Burlington towers we extremely generous and so nice. It was very heartwarming to see how giving they were at this time of year.” Burlington Towers ran the donation drive to support Clothesline Project. Clothesline sells the clothes to support the NDT. Everything that gets donated is avoiding becoming landfill. It’s a win-win-win-win situation. That last win is because Clothesline and NDT will soon be announcing the winner of its campaign that runs from August 22 to December 2, “Make room in your closet for Hawaii” contest. One lucky donor whose generosity amounted to a minimum of a three bag donation will be awarded the prize of a trip to Hawaii. But truly, another win is the recipients of these goods. Clothesline sells all of the collected donations to Value Village where they will be consumed a second time – at quite reasonable cost for the value. All of the money Clothesline receives from Value Village is used directly to fund NDT and the fight to find a cure for diabetes. Last year, funds raised by Clothesline helped NDT: t Invest $7.4 million in diabetes research t Operate 12 summer camps for more than 1,600 children with type 1 diabetes and their families; t Introduce nutrition tools for high-risk populations; t Host education events reaching more than 280,000 people across Canada; t Launch the 2013 Clinical Practice guidelines; t Work with government to improve and enhance diabetes policies across Canada through advocacy efforts. One of the few charities that will do home pick-up of your donations, Clothesline makes it easy for you to donate. You just need to contact them and leave labeled donations for them to pick up. Rodrigue noted that this Fill A Truck event was especially successful because they were able to collect such a large donation in such a short period, and with only TheRentersGuide.ca the one stop, they didn’t have to absorb the expense for a great deal of fuel. “I must say, it was a wonderful way to spend a day at work,” says Tammy Landry-Taylor, representative for Burlington Towers.“The cold and snow really got us into the festive spirit of giving, and it was touching for me to see so many TheRentersGuide.ca residents carrying down their donations by the bag full.”

Landry-Taylor was very receptive to the Clothesline Project and was instrumental in setting it up. With the overwhelming outpouring of support, it’s easy to see the great relationship that exists within the Burlington Towers community. One of the most desirable communities in Burlington, Burlington Towers provides a prime rental opportunity. Not only a great community socially – but also in terms of being surrounded by convenience and amenities. From shopping to highway access, it’s in a great location. Suites are modern and stylish and the community enjoys an extensive list of amenities, making this more than a home it offers an exceptional lifestyle. For more information on Burlington Towers visit burlingtontowers.com – and get ready for some spring cleaning. Landry-Taylor and Rodrigue would like to see another event around Easter – though the big red bin will remain on-site for resident donations at any time. To donate to Clothesline directly you have three options: By phone: Call 1-800-505-5525 to schedule a free pick up Online: Schedule a free pick up at diabetes.ca In person: Visit a donation centre. To find one near you, call 1-800-505-5525 or visit diabetes.ca/clothesline. Clothesline accepts gently used clothing, all cloth-based items, purses, accessories TheRentersGuide.ca shoes, boots, drapes, bedding, toys, kitchenware, cell phones, cameras, electronics, small household appliances, technology and more. Moving etiquette Follow the

golden rule

BY CHUCK R ESNICK

E

ven at the best of times, moving day can be stressful for everyone involved. Whether you are moving into/out of a highrise apartment building, condo, low-rise home or commercial property, a move involves trucks, boxes, packing materials, workers and a certain amount of organized chaos. As with any major event, preparation is key. There are certain things to do on moving day to make things go as smoothly as possible. The first is to be sure to bring your manners with you.

THE BREAK-UP:

regaining financial stability after divorce is a priority TD Canada Trust offers advice to the newly single for laying the groundwork to long-term financial success If there is one constant in the entertainment gossip pages, it is celebrity divorces. While celebrity couples may appear to take this in stride, they are not immune to the financial blow felt by most couples going through a divorce. Recent research from TD Canada Trust suggests many Canadians may not be financially prepared for a break-up, but there are steps women and men can take to regain their financial footing as soon as possible after divorce. According to research conducted for TD Canada Trust, the majority of Canadians in serious relationships have shared assets. Of those Canadians currently in, or recently in, a relationship, 72 per cent own a home together, 68 per cent have a joint bank account, 64 per cent have a joint financial plan and 52 per cent have a joint credit card. And, divorce TheRentersGuide.ca proceedings are taking longer, with 21 per cent lasting more than two years, an increase of six per cent in the past five years. “Most Canadian couples are financially interdependent, and it is a real challenge trying to navigate the financial aftermath at the end of a TheRentersGuide.ca relationship. Many people just aren’t prepared for the costs associated

with divorce and how their lifestyles may change afterwards,” says John Tracy, senior vice president, TD Canada Trust. “It’s important for newly single Canadians to stabilize their financial situation after a break-up so that they don’t start taking on debt, and there are simple steps people can take to re-establish their financial independence at any stage in life.” John Tracy offers advice to newly single Canadians on how to regain financial stability: Get started: The first step in establishing your financial plan is to understand your current position. You and your partner may have joint assets and liabilities. You’ll need to work out the division of the assets and find out what liabilities you’ll be responsible for. Work with an expert to understand the implications of dividing your assets and get an accurate and thorough understanding of your financial position. TheRentersGuide.ca Speak with a financial advisor: If your partner was the one who was making most money-

TheRentersGuide.ca

related decisions, it’s time to take the reins on money management. Even if you’ve always been in charge of finances in your household, it’s important to reevaluate your goals and financial situation, and adjust your investments accordingly. Now is the time to reconsider your priorities and goals and what your retirement looks like. A financial advisor can help you navigate your way through these questions and help you create a financial plan. A plan is essential to organizing your financial resources so you can achieve your shortand long-term goals. Even if you and your former spouse shared a common financial advisor prior to the separation or divorce, your financial advisor should respect your privacy as you work together on your future financial plans. Focus on building wealth: Becoming financially independent means it is solely your responsibility to accumulate wealth for the future. Moving from a saving to an investing mindset is an effective strategy to help build your wealth over time - and it doesn’t need to be daunting. Look for investment options that offer a low minimum investment. Everyone has a different risk profile, though, so make sure you have the right mix for you. And, speak to your bank about setting up a pre-authorized transfer that automatically transfers a set amount at regular intervals throughout the year into your RSP. In addition to saving without having to think about it, regular contributions also let you benefit from dollar-cost averaging, which can help build your wealth faster. Start today and continue to track your progress: Once you have your plan in place, it’s time to move forward with your finances. Create a budget, stick to it and track your progress - being disciplined with your budget today will pay off in the future. It’s important to review your financial plan regularly to ensure it continues to evolve as your needs and lifestyle change. It’s not unusual to have an event that causes a detour in your plan, but a good advisor will be there to help you make sound choices to ensure your goals remain on track. And if you’re not sure how to balance competing savings, investing and debt priorities, try out the available online budgeting tools or visit your local branch and talk to an advisor. TD Bank Group commissioned Environics Research Group to conduct a telephone omnibus survey of 2,000 Canadians 18 years of age or older, with 1,379 who are currently or were recently in a serious relationship. Results were collected between January 5 - 15, 2012. TD Canada Trust offers personal and business banking to more than 11.5 million customers. We provide a wide range of products and services from chequing and savings accounts, to credit cards, mortgages and business banking, to credit protection and travel medical insurance, as well as advice on managing everyday finances. TD Canada Trust makes banking comfortable with award-winning service and convenience through 24/7 mobile, internet, telephone and ATM banking, as well as in over 1,100 branches, with convenient hours to serve customers better.
