Where will you be?

WHILE IT SEEMS THAT the world around you is getting into holiday mode, you’re busy searching through rental ads and making plans to view apartments. You may be in the throes of packing, sorting, streamlining and boxing it all up. Not a very festive type of activity.

It’s a tough time of year to move, but it’s also a great time of year to make the change! Where will you be in 2018? Will you be starting the year off with the same housing issues you currently face, or will you be settling into your brand new apartment, having fun with some new decor pieces and getting comfortable in a space that really suits your needs?

Moving is disruptive. But it doesn’t have to overtake your life. That can be easier said than done when you’re moving over the holidays, because, let’s face it, the holidays present a lot of work and consume a lot of our free time, regardless of what we celebrate - or if we even celebrate the season.

If you celebrate, you know the demands of shopping, cooking, making plans to see family and

friends, going to get-togethers and such. Even if you don’t celebrate, you know that stores are too busy – or closed – causing inconvenience. And if you work in retail, it means many extra hours. The schools let out and this means two weeks of children at home needing your attention. It means getting your supplies and your movers lined up well ahead, because movers who celebrate the holidays and go away on vacations will leave those who need movers in shorter supply than normal.

Plan ahead and break down your tasks. Have a schedule for packing your home, book the movers early and try to book viewings together to make the most of your time on the hunt for that new apartment.

Ah yes, the holidays mean more than snowflakes, skating and school concerts when you’re moving, but think about how nice it will be to start 2018 in that perfect home!

1 | Containers will always get you organized. FALSE. Before you spend money on containers or other organizing products, do some preliminary planning. The first thing I recommend is doing the purge.

Only when you know exactly what it is you need to store, how much of it, and where the most suitable location is

to store it, should you go out and purchase containers. And don’t forget to measure first.

Bringing home the wrong containers adds more clutter.

2 | Being messy automatically means you are disorganized.

FALSE. Organizing is not about how it looks, it’s about how it works. Visual, creative types need to have things out where they can see them, because out-of-sight is out-of-mind for them. They need to find products that will allow them to contain their stuff to keep down the visual clutter while

still keeping them within view.

3 | You have to toss everything to get organized. FALSE. Although you shouldn’t keep things you don’t like or will never use, there’s always a way to either display or store the things that matter. For example, shadow boxes or display cases allow you to protect as well as showcase the possessions that truly mean something to you.

Traffic is slowed for safety within Linden Woods but surrounding it are truck routes, trains and fast-flowing vehicles. A trip to the airport is approximately twenty minutes and thirty minutes downtown. Three bus routes run in Linden Woods but most people travel by car or SUV.

Technology on the move

LET’S FACE IT – your electronic

devices make the world go round, and in the moving business, we realize how important those items are to families.

One of the most common questions we get is regarding how to transport electronics safely, especially big-screen TVs. During a move, whether it’s across town or across Canada, it is important to give these items special treatment so they arrive in one piece and in good working order. The best advice we have for accomplishing this goal requires some forethought: to keep the original boxes and foam spacers the electronic items came in.

That is truly the safest method for moving them.

Of course, people rarely keep these boxes, so at Two Men and a Truck - Canada, we have specialty boxes and crates designed specifically to move big-screen TVs safely. People who do their own packing and moving should be aware of how easy it is to damage one of these units. Spending a few dollars extra to purchase or rent one of these special boxes can make all the difference. They can accommodate any size TV, so there is a solution for every unit.

Another thing to remember is that most of these television sets are mounted on wall brackets – and moving companies are reluctant to disassemble the wall 2 0 nexthome.ca

mounts or assemble them at the other end. Usually, if something is going to go wrong, that’s when it will happen – and again, people rarely keep the installation instructions for the brackets. It’s far too chaotic on moving day to be trying to find any instruction

manuals. The best plan when preparing for your move is to take the TVs off the walls yourself, ahead of time, and have them ready to be packaged properly.

Here’s a tip for anyone disassembling electronics for a move. Get your digital camera

or phone and take photos of the wiring connections on the backs of the TVs, cable boxes, DVD players and the like. When it comes time to reassemble them, it will be much easier to reference how they were set up originally, saving time, stress and frustration.

The same goes for stereos and gaming systems. Many teenagers leave their entire gaming systems hooked up until moving day. It’s up to them to disassemble their systems and hopefully place them into the packing they arrived in. If

not, the best thing to do is wrap consoles in anti-static bubble wrap and place them into appropriately sized boxes so they won’t move around during the trip. In fact, this is the best way to treat most electronics items. That includes computers – especially desktop units. We have specialty boxes designed specifically for them that can be bought separately. If you choose not to go that route, then surround the unit with anti-static bubble wrap, and again, place it into an appropriate sized box.

And one last handy tip: pack the associated hardware with your electronics. When packing computers, place the mouse, keyboard, power cord, scanner, printer cables, etc. all into the same box. When these cartons arrive at your new digs, you’ll be very glad you did!

always sounds relaxing, until you actually have to plan for it. That’s when you realize you have about five thousand different things to worry about before your feet hit the sand and that mojito finally makes it into your hands. I’m talking about those little details you worry about that can ruing a trip. Like the possibility of losing your passport at the last possible moment, wondering if you actually locked the back door of your home and the thought of forgetting to ask your parents to feed the cat.

Then there’s the anxiety that comes with actually leaving your home behind. Those four walls hold all your worldly positions so it’s kind of normal that it’s totally a big deal.

Still, the holidays are almost here and you’re taking off for a bit. Don’t let fear stand between you and the perfect sun tan or trip back home. Just follow these simple steps to rest assured and have your rental still standing for your homecoming.

Leave your home key with someone you trust This is one of those moments where you realize how valuable a good friendship with your neighbours can be. If you’re

living in a secure building, you shouldn’t really be letting your friends come and go while you are away and it’s just easier to have someone as close as next door to check on your place. If you’re comfortable with it, tell your neighbour the details of your trip and give them access to your home in case of any emergencies. In fact, your insurance may require your home to be checked in on with some regularity to keep your policy valid. You don’t want to come home after three weeks and find that you left the water running the whole time, having turned your den into a swamp.

Tell your landlord In your lease agreement there may be information about vacation procedure (check it!).

Either way, let your landlord know if you will be away in case they may try to get in touch with you to plan repairs or any other emergencies. In fact, if there is a need for repairs or maintenance that would otherwise interrupt your happy lifestyle, this would be a perfect time for management to perform the work.

Clean your rental Cleaning your rental seems pretty

obvious, but it requires a bit more attention before you leave on vacation. Don’t fool yourself in believing that leaving a couple of dirty dishes on the counter won’t make a difference. It will!

Do a thorough cleaning such as clean out your fridge of any perishables that wont be good once you come back home.

Most importantly, make sure you take out the trash. You don’t want to come home to any surprising odours.

Don’t forget about Your dog/cat If you’re not bringing your furry companion with you, plan to have someone take care of them. It’s a big responsibility and you wouldn’t leave them with just anyone. Don’t leave this important detail to the last second.

Double check everything To really ensure you won’t be worrying about your home while on vacay, double check everything! Make a list if you have to and cross things off once you checked them to make sure you did in fact get them all done.
