As the days grow warmer and we open our windows to let in the fresh air, we also risk letting in pesky insects and flies. A friend of mine recently told me the tranquility of her sunroom is being disrupted by some wasps. So far, she has managed to find someone to guide the stinging, buzzing pests outside, but she’s finding it hard to relax in her sunroom, lest they return. Her husband suggested calling an exterminator to see if there is a nest, but although my friend is afraid of wasps, she doesn’t want to kill them. I get her desire to respect all living things, but frankly, I’ve never been a fan of spiders, flies, ants or anything creepy crawly when I’m outside, never mind when they invade my living space. As kindhearted as I am, it’s wham-slam, into the garbage can as soon as I see an ant, spider or bug in my house. And if I had an infestation, I would call my landlord to take care of it. If you’re being pestered by unwanted house guests, call your landlord. It is their responsibility to take care of the problem. Most landlords appreciate knowing about a situation when it starts, as they would prefer to keep their properties clean. And when it’s time to make a move, let Renters Guide help. YONGE & EGLINTON FUN FOR ALL IN MID-TOWN The heart of mid-town, Yonge and Eglinton, is a vibrant community with a financial centre, nightlife, businesses, entertainment, parks, dining and upscale shopping. It’s a great neighbourhood for strolling, as well as a perfect place to live, especially if you require public transit. It’s a great neighbourhood for those who love to get out and enjoy plenty of community resources and amenities. From parks and sports to socializing and group activities, there really is something for everyone – at any time of day. It’s a busy pace in the hub – right at Yonge and Eglinton – but the side streets are quiet and tranquil, with large, old trees and well-kept homes boasting well-manicured lawns. It’s a cool part of town, definitely attracting active and outdoorsy residents. Occasionally referred to as Yonge and Eligible, there is a notable community of young single professionals out to enjoy the lifestyle here. There are also a lot of older, active adults on the move, with a lot of upscale and posh residences. While there are still some deals and budget dining, the area is known for its upscale shopping and five-star restos. Yonge and Eglinton is right on the Yonge subway line and the station is a really busy one. The area is well served by public transit for those who don’t have a car. Mount Pleasant and Avenue Road are also great access routes to the city when Yonge Street is too busy. The neighbourhood has a large shopping centre and business complex. The library as well as several schools — public and private — are in the area, including the prestigious Havergal College for girls and Upper Canada College for boys. Eglinton Park is massive, with everything from tennis and baseball diamonds to a playground and winter ice skating.

For years, I’ve rallied against homeowners using bright red mulch. In my opinion, red mulch in the sun is the only thing you see when looking at a garden. It overwhelms the plants. Finally, there is some science to support my dislike for the “fake” stuff. While some mulches are organically dyed, many of the new products are chemically treated, and the chemicals slowly leach into the soil. If you are determined to go for colour (there is purple and blue now too), choose a product that is safe for the environment.

BE AWARE OF BIG DECK SYNDROME
This is when homeowners invest lots of money and build a large deck or walk out on the back of the second storey of their homes. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve seen some amazing constructions done by talented contractors, but eventually, the homeowner is going to realize that their beautiful deck is a giant stage and they have just put themselves in full view of every one of their neighbours. Two tips to keep in mind – plan for privacy as part of the design and use an environmentally friendly wood. These come pre-treated in rich brown tones that look great. My personal favourite is MicroPro Sienna.
FRONT GARDEN FRUSTRATION
Every single house, in almost every single neighbourhood in Canada, has a garden jammed up against the house under the front windows. Very few of these are successful because this is a challenging spot for plants to grow. Instead of placing the garden tight to the house, move it out by two to three ft., and put a band of gravel behind it. The gravel allows you access to the home for things like cleaning windows, but it also forces you to plant forward, allowing the plants some space from the home itself. The best part, as the plants grow, no one will see the band of gravel from the sidewalk!
PRIVACY, PLEASE!
Have you planted a row of cedars to create privacy? Many homeowners have. The issue I have with them is that there are very few successful examples that are healthy, full and green. Instead, I see hedges that have one tree in the middle that has died and turned reddish-brown. Or, the hedge itself has lost all of its branches at the bottom, creating an ugly gap that we try to fill with Hosta plants or other doomed perennials. Trying to create privacy with a triangle is a tough challenge! In the case of cedar, the skinniest part is at the top, right where we need the most coverage. Instead of just a cedar hedge, try planting a pair of cedars with an ornamental pear tree. By layering trees that are different shapes, you can create more privacy significantly faster.

There’s a misconception that landscaping is the same as gardening when it comes to the value of your investment. Gardening is all about the plants and using plants to create visual interest. Adept gardeners can create impressive displays of colour and interest that can add value to a home. Landscaping includes plants and gardens, but landscaping also encompasses the manipulation of land and usable space. Landscaping includes things like outdoor kitchens, walkways, patios, decks, fences, water features and shade structures. As a result, landscaping costs are on average significantly higher than the costs involved with putting in a garden. So often homeowners set their budgets based on numbers associated with gardening and not with the true expense for landscaping. When pricing an outdoor renovation for my clients, the landscaping costs are often 10 times more than the plant budget. Before you start any outdoor work, do your pricing first and always work from a plan.

DON’T BUG ME GETTING RID OF CREEPY, CRAWLY HOUSE GUESTS by MARLENE EISNER It can happen to anyone at any time: you’re sitting in the living room peacefully watching TV and munching on popcorn when suddenly you’re hit by an unwanted guest — a carpenter ant. The lowly black insect may seem lonely crawling along the edge of your coffee table, but you know that if there is one, there have got to be more. Household pests can crop up in some rental properties. These opportunistic pests live anywhere they can find food, water, warmth and shelter. Some pests can become a serious health hazard and your landlord is responsible for getting rid of them. If you’ve already tried to fix the problem with a product from the hardware
store but have had no success, tell your landlord. He or she is obliged to hire a professional exterminator. Most landlords want to help, as it’s in their best interest to keep their properties clean. If your landlord is reluctant to do anything, the local
health department can aid you in handling the pest problem. Although you may never be disturbed by carpenter ants or silverfish, it’s a good idea to learn how to identify pests, their risks and how to get rid of them.

SILVERFISH Long, flat silver-grey body. Broad at head and narrow at rear. Move quickly. Prefer damp, warm areas. Active at night. Contaminate food.

BEDBUGS Small, oval and flattened. Reddish-brown. Active at night. Bites leave minor to severe lumps or swelling and can cause bleeding.
ELIMINATION/PREVENTION Clean and air bedding. Replace mattresses that are infected. Vacuum frequently.
CARPENTER ANTS Large black ant or black with red marks. Active at night. Prefer moist areas. Live in walls, ceilings, doors and insulation. Destroy wood structures by tunnelling. Carry germs with their bite.
ELIMINATION/PREVENTION Keep areas dry. Remove food sources. Seal honey, jelly, fruit and meat. Keep areas around the outside of house free of wood. Spread diatomaceous earth along the foundation. If infestation is present, locate and destroy the nest.
