Global style and space refined In this issue of HD&R, several of our contributors take on the trend of adding global style to your home without having to pack a passport. Since trolling the globe for treasures isn’t always a possibility, Yanic Simard’s story on page 28 will help with tips and tricks for adding items from abroad, while design editor Glen Peloso gives us a mini history lesson and modern day solutions to add cultural clout to your next

decorating project. Since this issue also focuses on small-space solutions, Silvana Longo’s story on the conversion of a 1,250-sq.-ft., one-bedroom unit to a three-bedroom condo with all the comforts of home is a must-read for those looking for alternatives to traditional finishes and fixtures. Rounding out this issue is an assortment of great features including this month’s hot Smart Shopper deals from our advertisers plus new products and news from the decor and reno front in our What’s New section. We hope you enjoy this issue. If you have a reno story you’d like to share with us, please connect with us via email or give us a call. We’d love to hear from you!

SERENDIPITOUS FIND

NEW COUNTRY, NEW HOME

Dear HD&R

Since I moved to Canada four years ago I’ve been reading this amazing magazine, dreaming about the time when I would have the chance to apply some of the ideas for my own place. Well two and a half years ago, I became a proud homeowner and slowly have been using the decorating tips and the recommended places to organize, furnish and make my home a relaxing place.

Thank you so much for such a great magazine! We are just starting a major renovation and one of my two-year-old twins picked up your magazine at a local store today (and ran out with it in her hand). I ran after her saying, “Mommy has to pay for thatâ€? and was so pleased that it turned out to be FREE and that it’s ďŹ lled with amazing ideas and suggestions. A few months ago, I lost a tile brochure that had the kitchen tile (new wood look) I wanted and as I was reading your magazine, I found it!!!! I called the store and voilĂ , I got the price. We have also been debating to hire an interior designer and your article on “The beneďŹ ts of hiring a designer for your renovationsâ€? had wonderful suggestions for us. Thanks for a great read and have a great day!!!

Natalie Van Vilet

Congratulations! Natalie is the winner of the Tavaris handleset. Winners must e-mail susan.legge@wall2wallmedia.com or call 416.626.4212 and arrange to pick up their prize at our head ofďŹ ce before the end of the month of June 2012.

Please keep up the good work and the excellent articles. Respectfully, Mauricio Gomez Weiss

FROM VISION TO REALITY Thank you so much to everyone at the magazine for letting me tap into your knowledge and decorating skills. I have been cutting out pictures from your magazine for years to help me decorate and renovate my home. I am often complimented on my decorating style thanks to HD&R. Without your ideas, I would not be able to accomplish my goal of pulling off a decorating style for all the rooms in my home that make me happy. I look forward to each new issue. Thank you again to everyone on staff. Margaret Wilson

is money. Don’t waste my time. There are all kinds of clichĂŠs about time, and the sad part is, they are all true. The time you waste is time you will never get back. Spending time on tasks you don’t enjoy is practically a crime. Be conscious of the way you spend your time and streamline tasks to save time where you can. That extra time can be used for the better things in life. As John Lennon said “Life is what happens when you are busy making other plans.â€? 4W\RWbTOabPgQZSO`ZOPSZW\U You can retrieve anything you need quickly and effortlessly when you store related items in clear (see-through) containers and label the contents with large, easy-to-read labels. You can create labels using a label maker, computer-generated adhesive labels or handwritten shipping labels attached with clear packing tape (use a thick black marker).

/\Sfb`OV]c` I was listening to the radio when the announcer asked “If you had an extra hour in your day, what would you do with it? My first thought was that another question needs to be asked before I could answer that one, and it is: “What can you do to free up an extra hour in your day? I decided to hire someone to do my bookkeeping so I could free up time to take my dog for a leisurely walk instead of rushing. I challenged my daughter with this question and she decided to give up watching “Survivor this year so she could learn a dance solo for the studio’s competitive program. How we spend our time is our choice; we need to choose consciously. So, “what can you do to free up an extra hour in your day?

BW[S[O\OUS[S\bI’ve always maintained that the task expands to fit the time allotted for it, especially for perfectionists. But there is a point of diminishing returns on the time invested. When you begin a task or project, decide how much time it’s worth spending on the activity and stick to that (set a timer to help keep you on track).

AOdSabS^a Store items near the place you use them. For example, I keep a bottle of vinegar and water and a roll of paper towel in the kitchen and in each of the bathrooms. When a quick cleanup is required, it takes less time and energy because the supplies are handy. One of my mostoften used items in the house is a basket I keep in the hall closet on a shelf at waist height. I toss my keys and sunglasses in it so I never have to go searching for them when I’m rushing out the door. I also have a drawer there for my dog’s leash and bags – so handy!

C\RS`abO\Rg]c`VWUVZ]eS\S`Ug^S`W]RaO\R aQVSRcZSg]c`ROWZgbOaYaOQQ]`RW\UZgTackle tough tasks during high-energy periods and less-demanding tasks during low ones. Also consider your work style when planning your day; do you work best in short bursts or long stretches? You’ll be amazed at how much more you can accomplish by keeping your style in mind when planning your daily activities.

4W\RWbTOabIt’s easy to forget where we put the items we don’t use on a regular basis. Create an inventory that details the storage location of items you use only on a seasonal or occasional basis. Keep the document on your computer with a shortcut on your desktop. As the list grows, you can always find the information quickly by using the Edit/Find feature in MS Word. Now you never have to worry about remembering where you put your passport!

EVObWag]c`bW[Se]`bV- Do you wish you had more time yet find yourself spending time to save money? If you spend hours doing unpleasant tasks that you could hire someone to do, or drive across the city to save a few dollars on a grocery store special, you are squandering a precious commodity. Average people spend time to save money; successful people spend money to save time. Look at it this way: You can always make more money but you can never have more than 24 hours in a day. Before doing any task, get into the habit of asking yourself what it’s costing you in terms of your time and weigh the return on that investment.

1]\a]ZWRObSbOaYab]aOdSbW[S For example, return calls and emails in batches rather than interrupting yourself throughout the day.

an outfit - it completes the look and pulls it all together. To me, the best part of the design is all in the details. Accessories can be anything that complement a design and add to the aesthetic value. When you think of accessories, imagine the impact of wall art, throw pillows, antiques, sculptures, vases, collectibles or even memorabilia. It can be something very personal or on the contrary, a piece which varies seasonally. I like to pull the accessories together last or at least once all major pieces have been selected. This gives you the freedom to contrive a more organic design, almost allowing the accessories to find you. Once the major pieces have been chosen, you have a better sense of how the room feels and ultimately what is missing from within the mix. I like to plan the mood of a space right from the get-go so when it comes down to the details, it’s simple to reinforce the initial design concepts.

E63<G=CB67<9=4 /113AA=@73A7;/57<3 B637;>/1B=4E/:: /@BB6@=E>7::=EA /<B7?C3AA1C:>BC@3A D/A3A1=::31B70:3A=@ 3D3<;3;=@/07:7/ Accessories can be a very personal thing so there is no right or wrong answer, however there are a few “rules I like to follow. For instance, grouping Items together —odd numbers work best and combining multiple items allows you to create volume and add visual weight to your space. Choose objects with a common design element to create repetition, which is key to consistency. Allow the eye to see a balanced flow from one side of the room to the other. Tension, $

is one of my favourite elements of design when it comes to accessorizing. If you have a minimalistic space and your taste is modern, try to suggest tension between one standout accessory and the rest of your decor. Juxtaposing an ornate mirror or vase or even a lamp to produce tension in your space will provide high contrast and generate a memorable design aesthetic. The key to apt execution is placement and proportion. Like everything else in design, plan ahead—pull all your fabric swatches and floor plans together and bring them shopping with you. Having your floor plans or drawing will ensure you’re purchasing pieces that will actually fit into your space. However, it is the smallest details that will make the biggest impact. Show off your individuality by purchasing pieces that represent you and your lifestyle. I love unique pieces—whether it be the form of a vintage tray table or an abstract vase, anything to evoke conversation. Typically, it is these pieces, the smallest items in your space which will make your room truly unique. Toronto has some fantastic vintage and consignment shops where you’re bound to find distinctive objects no one else carries. One of my favourite shopping destinations is in the Summerhill neighbourhood on Yonge Street -—there you can shop for anything from Vintage Glam at Decorum to Contemporary eye candy at Artifacts. Purchase pieces you love and the best ones you can afford this way they will always work for you and your home.

WHAT IS IT? Global inuence is all about infusing cultural elements into your design. This can be costly if you’re looking for authentic pieces, but the trick is to do it in moderation. Bright and vivacious is what the international trend offers, with an energetic colour scheme that breathes new life into the home. ON THE RUNWAY The inuence of global design ďŹ rst appeared on the runway in 2009 when Ralph Lauren and Givenchy showed off multi-coloured garments with ornate gold jewelry, and the trend has lingered in home dĂŠcor since then and is stronger now more than ever.

TRENDING COUNTRIES Two speciďŹ c looks are really hot right now – Caribbean and Indian inuences. These two looks are completely different in terms of style but are both doing very well in the marketplace. WHERE IS IT? These ethnic styles creating a statement are invading wallpaper, tile and fabric, creating a chic cultural look.

POPULAR PATTERNS Ikat became huge this year, you can ďŹ nd one to suit any home’s dĂŠcor from tone-on-tone to contrasting brights, and next year you’ll start to notice Batik patterns making their way in! MATERIALS Bone inlay is really stylish right now – you can ďŹ nd it in small doses like on keepsake boxes, or in larger items such as dressers and headboards. Also be on the lookout for distressed mango wood. SHOPPING There is nothing like actually taking a trip to the country that your dĂŠcor is inspired by and picking up pieces there – instead of purchasing typical souvenirs like coffee mugs, umbrellas and key chains, pick up a set of sconces, a sculpture or a hand painting. Items from afar always make for conversation pieces but if you actually went there yourself and got it, it makes for an even better story – especially if you can talk to the individual who made it. observe anyone who travels extensively, they likely have a style that reflects elements of their travels. This is certainly prevalent in the fashion world, where the “skinnyâ€? jeans that are now so popular in North America were all the rage in Europe a few years ago, and the loose, drawstring-waist linen pants that many men favour have a definite East Indian influence. The same is true in the world of interior design, and it is certainly prevalent when you look at the variety of colours and patterns available. For example, the Moroccan influence in footstool shapes and fabrics, India’s influence on colour palette and pattern and China’s on accessory shapes and style. We recently saw this trend clearly when we were accessorizing a client’s space. You will see it yourself as you look at the newest home accessories from Indigo where the international influences are evident. This kind of cross-influence isn’t a new experience; in fact, there is evidence of it throughout history. From mid-17th century through to the mid-18th century, France saw the rise of “Chinoiserie,â€? which was a result of trading between France and China. Traders returning with indigenous home dĂŠcor items influenced society at large. The same is true when you look at English interior design – since the Royals married cross-culturally, British design was initially influenced by Italian and French designs. And later, there were influences from India, the Caribbean and every other country that the English occupied. Consequently, English design influences were also made popular in the occupied countries. Today, the international influences are pervasive for a variety of reasons. With so many of the elements of interior design originating in China and India, and with buyers and importers spending so much time in other countries and with access to

!6=;32p1=@/<2@3<=D/B7=<A8C:G

the Internet, evidence of these influences are increasingly seen in just about every corner of the world. Start with the colour trends that are popular now, and look to the Indian sari fabrics and colours. The strong oranges, azure blues and golds derive from the spices used in the local food. Traditionally, they also were the basis of dyes to create these colours. Next, look at the intricate details and complex fabrics that are found in throw pillows and bedding. The silk weaves that comprise the bed spreads and draperies show a strong Indian influence. Using items such as African masks and pottery, wooden sculptures and native wooden figures in dÊcor, particularly when designing a bathroom, is on trend. In the living room, a Moroccan side table (simple wooden base with a removable copper tray top) coupled with a modern sofa and an Indonesian sideboard, would not be considered a faux pas. Nor should you be afraid to mix and match traditional Chinese or Japanese patterns with influences of a traditional Turkish rug design – such as in a room divider with arches that mimic Indian buildings and Moroccan-inspired, heavily woven fabrics on stools. In bedrooms, it is not unusual to see carved headboards with linens and a bench at the end of the bed, reminiscent of a traditional seat of the Chinese empire. Feel free to use a bed with a canopy and side draperies in soft, sheer fabrics, perhaps most popular in climates closer to the equator but elegant in any environment. There may be throw cushions in a toile that depict a scene from a country other than in North America. Also, look at wallpaper patterns that may mimic the complex patterns associated with a Bindi artist’s work. These days we also see a fair amount of animal prints, more evocative of Africa than Toronto. Major Canadian cities reflect these international influences, and such design multiculturalism will continue to have a profound impact on the dÊcor in our homes.

Some updated figures were released at the Canadian Home Builders’ Association (CHBA) spring board meetings, which I attended in June, and that one definitely stood out. When I think about it, it makes a lot of sense. Across the country, people who have some equity in their homes are choosing to renovate or repair instead of sell. With the increased demand last year, the renovation industry created half-a-million jobs and the trickle-down effect amounted to additional income tax revenue for the government and increased consumer spending in the local economies where these professional renovators live. When I mention professional renovators, I would be remiss if I didn’t give a nod to the RenoMark program, which has expanded into seven provinces and 32 markets across Canada. Professional renovators who are RenoMark members abide by the CHBA Code of Ethics and a renovation-specific Code of Conduct, which includes providing a detailed written contract for all jobs, offering a minimum two-year warranty and carrying a minimum of $2-million liability insurance. Educating homeowners about the RenoMark program is one way home building associations across the country are combating the still-prevalent underground cash economy—another way is by asking the federal government to introduce a permanent home renovation tax rebate and we’re !$6=;32p1=@/<2@3<=D/B7=<A8C:G

still having those conversations. You can renovate with confidence knowing that RenoMark contractors are held to a higher standard. I read recently that Altus Group did a survey of new homebuyers that purchased between 2009 and 2011 across the nation and one in six said they were planning to do a renovation over $5,000 in the next year. ‘Tis the season and popular renovations range from designing and building a backyard deck, to upgrading a bathroom, to gutting and remodelling an entire kitchen. It goes without saying that an investment in your home, by way of renovation or repair, will get you a handsome return. In many cases, the return on your investment is more than 100 per cent. Doesn’t that sound like a win-win? If you’re thinking of doing a renovation or repair to your home, visit www.renomark.ca as a starting point and find an information guide, as well as a local list of professional contractors that work in your area.

hey say good things happen in threes. That was definitely the vision interior designer Belinda Albo had when she along with architect Alex Rubb, decided to convert a one-bedroom + den condo into a glamourous three-bedroom residence. With a complete reconfiguration of the 1,250 sq. ft. space, the entire renovation took a mere three months to complete – and that was with condo restrictions that only allowed them to do work between 9 am and 5 pm during the week with increased limitations over the weekend – a time frame only a pro could achieve. The result is a luxurious suite with two additional boudoirs that seamlessly blend into the whole. I met with the Winnipeg-native designer and veteran Toronto house flipper -- she has been successfully flipping properties for 10 years -- for a personal tour of the newly renovated condo. While we waited outside the suite a few moments waiting for an agent to finish showing the condo to prospective buyers, Albo begins to describe her design approach to this latest house-flipping venture, “We didn’t do typical things. For instance, most renovations start with new hardwood flooring. She didn’t go that route and opted to use large format 24 by 24-tiled porcelain floors instead. “It’s a pet-friendly and easyto-clean alternative, she assures me. Even still, this is Canada - not some southern European villa and I couldn’t fathom a home in the northern hemisphere without some presence of hardwood. Yet upon entry, I was struck by the

glamourous touches such as the unique lighting fixtures that mirrored the high-gloss floors making the space sparkle. And my predisposition for the warmth of hardwood? She successfully offset the coldness that porcelain floors give off by carpeting all the bedrooms which warmed up the space and upped the cosy factor. “We wanted to do something unique, that has quality but is still youthful and fresh, says Albo. “We also wanted the space to feel like a luxury hotel suite. Mission accomplished. A self-confessed frugal designer who takes pride in finding deals, and making better use of space, she chose the 25-year-old building located in the heart of North York for this design challenge of making three-out-of-one because of the spaciousness of the rooms. “We wanted a concept where value meets luxury, and most three bedroom units would have been a lot more expensive than our unit. In every renovation, there are surprises and Albo casually chalks it up to the learning process which inevitably sharpen her problem-solving skills. She created an interesting wall feature in the dining room

with drywall and textured wallpaper in order to drop the ceiling and resolve the concrete ceiling issue in condo buildings which impede installing light fixtures. The perfect marriage of art and function results in a stunning architectural detail. “Design is a process and the process is an evolution, says Albo. She advises to not be too rigid with your design ideas and to just have fun with the journey. Inherent in any creative process, once the project reaches completion, as this Beecroft condo has since it is on the market, this savvy house flipper is already thinking of future prospects where she can leverage her talent on the next resale venture. The cycle will inevitably start up again once that SOLD sign gives her the green light to design and conquer.
