Great kitchen renos do happen when you seek out solid expert advice

We created Home Décor and Renovations for people who love their homes. It’s much more than just a décor magazine, it’s your guide to cool new products, local shops and services, and expert advice to help inspire you and get your next renovation or redesign project going. This issue is full of kitchen tips and design ideas – from practical design points to customized catering kitchens, we’ve got you covered! The kitchen isn’t a favourite room to remodel for obvious reasons – it’s costly, time-consuming and inconvenient. To avoid major pitfalls, you need a solid plan and a reputable renovator who can deliver on schedule. Cooking microwave meals in the living room and relying on takeout isn’t fun (except for the kids) but knowing there’s a well-planned kitchen in your future makes it worth it. There are always going to be some surprises along the way, and it’s essential to choose your appliances well in advance so the kitchen designer can incorporate them into the overall plan. Once you’ve chosen your favourites, it’s hard to change the sizing, so choose well! Since products and appliances can incorporate trends, don’t forget to assess your family’s appliance needs first and don’t favour style over substance. Remember avocado-coloured ranges and harvest gold refrigerators – need I say more? For more simple advice, practical tips and news, check out our blog. We always looking forward to your feedback on this issue, so please write to us!

MY FAVOURITE FIND OF THE MONTH

Since this is our kitchen issue I couldn’t resist this tip, which was sent via my mother-in-law. The email included a whole slew of useful and surprisingly easy tips from blog The Daily Buzz. “You can purchase an inexpensive tension rod at retailers that carry drapery to organize your spray cleaners any which way you see fit. Make sure you measure your cabinet space before buying.”

We’ve posted more of these tips on our blog, www. homedecorandrenovations.com.

winner Loving the trends

Inspiration!

This year involves big changes for me, one of the biggest being decorating my own place. I rip out the pages of pictures and ideas from HD&R. A fresh start to the new year and decor trends to go along with it. Who doesn’t love that?

Wow. What a wonderful, inspirational, informative, colourful issue that has something for all taste and design preference. I did a happy dance when I open my issue!

I know I do and that is why I study the trend reports from your top designers. Glen Peloso never fails and touches on all aspects of design from colours to fabrics and patterns. I love the trend report - orange crush accents and the vintage retro look are on my list of what the house is going to feel like. I am a modern girl at heart but I think I can incorporate a little vintage into my life. It’s almost like having my own designer helping me out… Almost :-). I look forward to every issue.   Thanks for all the help! Effie Pessos

Congratulations!

Effie is the winner of the BALLOONA stool from UMBRA! Winners must e-mail susan.legge@wall2wallmedia.com or call 416.626.4212 and arrange to pick up their prize at our head office before the end of the month of February, 2012.

Merci, Heather Blake

For the love of great design Hello, I really like your magazine. Getting this quality for free is amazing. I do read your articles, too. What got me writing is “Forecasting trends” written by Glen Peloso. People who designed almost all that timeless furniture: Le Corbusier, MacKintosh, Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies van der Rohe, C. Eames are first and foremost architects. Industrial design is that magical place where the brain of an engineer and an artist fuse. Before Bauhaus, there were no schools for industrial design. If one wanted to design furniture (even in the1970s) and interiors, they had to became an architect first. I can say this for Europe, but as far as I know it was the same elsewhere in the world. Keep on bringing your nice work to us! Elvira

DESIGNERADVICE

The heart of red by GLEN PELOSO

IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR WHEN EVERYTHING SEEMS

to be hearts, chocolate and red. Valentine’s Day permeates just about every retail shop in the city, and strong reds seem to be so associated with this Hallmark holiday that we rarely look at the colour unless it’s in the month of February. In my opinion, cupid has run off with this colour but it is time to hang on to it as a great one to use in the home. I have to say that red is one of my favourite colours to use in a space, largely because it is a strong colour that often overpowers the other colours that are part of the room. As a result, it offers the person entering the room for the first time – or anytime really – a place to start the experience of the room. We subconsciously look to the brightest colour in the room to start the experience of that room, and by offering a very clear focal point in a strong hue, we remove the feeling of being overwhelmed that you can get in a large space. I have to say that there is something very enticing about the excitement the colour red invokes, and that may very likely be the reason that it has been selected

024-025 Designer Advice-Glen-Decorating with RED.indd 24

as the colour that has come to represent Valentine’s Day – which is all about passion. That same kind of passion is great to inject in to the home, but the question remains how to effectively do it so that it isn’t overwhelming, but is an exciting experience. Red is certainly a great colour for creating intimacy and romance in the home. It can often be a wonderful colour to use in a dining room, for instance, where you may cover all of the walls in a warm red shade. Generally, the dining room is used in the evening when it is illuminated with the warm flicker of candles or other sources of soft lighting. You want to create a sense of intimacy and closeness, whether you are using the space for a group of friends having stimulating conversation or just for two people celebrating a significant day, like Valentine’s Day. Creating a room that is both somewhat dark and aesthetically “close” helps to create that feeling of familiarity. Deep reds can also be a pleasing choice for an accent wall in a master bedroom. Whether you use the colour in a detailed wall paper or as a solid block for

1/24/12 12:23:59 PM

a featured wall like the headboard wall, the depth of colour gives a feeling of sleep and passionate intimacy, which is generally what you hope for in the bedroom. In other rooms, red is a fantastic colour as an accent. You can use it in accessories that may be placed on a bookshelf to offer pops of colour to the area. Having pieces of glass in a bright red can offer excitement to coffee tables, side tables, or elements on a mantel shelf. I have also used larger red glass bowls on a kitchen table, which serves to ground the table and the area. Speaking of grounding an area, traditional Persian rugs filled with deep reds can be wonderful to ground the furniture in a room. I don’t suggest red as a colour to use in flooring, like the red cherry-stained floors that have been used in the past. Red works best in the home as a “spice” but not as a “flavour.” Selecting the right red can be a bit of a trick and you certainly don’t want to work with a primary colour unless you are creating a kids play area. Opt for a deep red when used on walls, and a slightly brighter shade when used it as an accent. Benjamin Moore’s “Rapture” is one that I really like and have used effectively in the past. If you ask me, I think that every room should have some element in red, whether that be a throw cushion, an accessory, a carpet or an entire wall. It creates a sense of excitement, passion and good design. With all that said – have a wonderful Valentine’s Day!

Designing

the kitchen of your dreams by yanic simard

re you in love with your home but have a hate-on for the kitchen? You’re probably thinking of renovating sometime down the line, but the thought of it may overwhelm you to the point of wanting to put up the “For Sale” sign, pack your things and move into a home with a brand new kitchen. But before you do that, take a minute to stop and think about it. If you re-design the space yourself it will be your own, created the way you want it. Just about everything is customizable and nothing’s worse then moving into a home where the layout or function of this main room just doesn’t work for you and your family. Sure, it might look pretty, but it may actually be quite unpractical. The kitchen is a space that should be well thought out and well planned – especially since you’ll probably only do this once. Hiring a professional and experienced design firm can be very beneficial. Not only will they make the design process a whole lot easier, but they will help you avoid costly mistakes. I’m going to take you through the course of action I took when creating this beautiful space.

PERSONALITY Constructing a space that is well-suited to the homeowners is very important to me. I really like to bring the personality and character of the family to life through the design. The kitchen is the hub of the home, which means that investing in this area is a very wise decision – not only for the time while you live in it, but also if you decide to sell in the future. This kitchen is completely customized, made exactly how the homeowners wanted it.

THE OVERALL DESIGN I always like to begin a project with some sort of inspiration. Clive Christian’s designs very much inspired the look of this kitchen, above. It’s traditional, but with a twist of contemporary. I kept a lot of important elements in mind when coming up with the design, contrast being at the top of my list. The dark, elaborate wood for the cabinetry really stands out against the colouring of the natural stone. You’ll notice that the Calacatta marble for the flooring, countertops and backsplash are all the same, creating a strong sense of unity. To add some visual interest, I laid out the backsplash in a brick pattern. You might also notice the cut out in the backsplash area – this was made specifically for the pop-out fan for the range, so when it’s being used, it is flush with the wall rather than protruding outwards. The more little details you incorporate, the bigger the impact of the space will be. I kept the look clean by paneling the fridge to match the contemporary shaker-style cabinet doors.

THE ISLAND Keeping the work triangle in mind, I decided place the sink here, keeping it, the fridge and stove all within an acceptable distance of one another. I made the height of the island higher than the typical 36 inches. Instead, I opted for 40 inches because I find that it’s much better for cooking and baking, which is what the family was mainly going to use it for. All four sides of the island are used for storage, consisting of doors and shelves, with wicker baskets that offer easy access for the children. I even made room in there for recycling and garbage components along with a water filter. It’s all in the details. Underneath all of this beauty went a lot of hard work. Don’t be fooled to think that because the kitchen is massive, that the efficiency is not there. This big kitchen is for a big family, and functionality played the most important role in the design, which was totally achieved. The homeowners love it, which is the best payoff for me as a designer. Now go and take down that for sale sign!

– and prettier, too, thanks to the talents of her designer, Rachel Finer. Finer and Ford worked together to bring this very unusual kitchen to life. Ford wasn’t worried so much about aesthetics, she was tearing out her lovely and oh-soconventional white marble kitchen, and function was her priority. She wanted to design the function and flow based on the smooth systems she enjoys in professional kitchens, while Finer kept bringing in the idea of resale, of entertaining, and ensuring that neither function nor fashion would need to be sacrificed – though the two did need to come up with some interesting solutions for this residential installation. The results are as beautiful in practice as they are in the pictures. Stainless steel is not only flattering, Ford explains that the five-foot section of stainless countertop creates the perfect surface for rolling out pastry dough and working with cold applications. The rest is quartz, “everY time i Went “HeY!” tHe creW Went “oH for its durability and heat resistance. no...” But those “Hey!” moments translated into some The choice of material offered Finer a incredible features in the City Girl Catering kitchen. cheaper!” Finer had let Ford know that bringing professional equipment into a residence would have posed an issue with insurance. Of course there is a large, stainless range hood above the stove, also from the GE Monagram series. While these stylish little numbers are starting to show up in a lot of residential kitchens, most will never realize the power these have, but from fish to deep-fry, these really do keep odour from escaping the kitchen. It has four speeds as well as two built-in warming lamps. One of the most commercially recognizable elements of the kitchen is the restaurant style “feat of engineering” over the peninsula. Ford wanted the shelving above her main work station to house all of the items she needs at hand. Instead of running around the kitchen gathering pans and ingredients, they are all within arm’s reach. But the price for convenience is steep. While Ford jokes about the feat of engineering, she is completely serious when she explains that “six large steel posts support literally over a tonne of weight.” The stainless wrapped cherry protects the wood from damage during use, but the cherry is strong and enduring – and also an attractive finish. The peninsula itself proved more functional than an island. While it concerned Finer that Ford wanted the countertop height almost two inches higher than conventional countertops, Ford’s not concerned about resale. Some renovations are personal, you’ve got to love where you live. In this case it’s more than just a home. “It’s my office, it should be perfect.” says Ford. The peninsula and countertops actually have dual function. While cooking and catering are her main uses by day, Ford also teaches cooking classes, and the bar-height countertop along the one side can seat eight comfortably, with a perfect view. The bar is also ideal for entertaining.

The lights are also great for entertaining – thanks to dimmers and undermounts. But soft light isn’t practical for a catering kitchen. Ford has six pot lights over the peninsula, another 15 ceiling pots as well as more undermounts. While investigating lighting, Ford also found hydroponic grow lights and incorporated them over the wall shelving. Sourced from North Carolina, they are energy efficient and stay on all night. With them she grows an herb garden, the selection her to have the freshest herbs at her disposal any time of year. One element that most will not have considered for their own kitchen is the massive blower box. The reason may be that this is Ford’s own invention. She does a lot of smoking fish and searing meat and needs to dry the surface. The three-sided blower box, equipped with two high-powered fans does the trick. It’s also the perfect way to dry blanched veggies, she explains, they travel better and don’t break down that way. Of course there is floor-to-ceiling storage for the endless varieties of specialty oils, vinegars, salts, and assortment of baking ingredients, but she’s created shallow shelving instead of arm’s deep pantries so that she can see and access what she needs. A large Sub-Zero fridge with the side-by-side freezer is adequate for what she needs at hand, but fridges and deep freezers have taken over the basement. While not at all a conventional kitchen, it’s perfect for Ford. She’s proven that there’s no need to limit yourself in kitchen design, room to think beyond resale, and to find perfection in those “Hey!” moments.

getting started Lydia McNutt chats with Peter Khatami, co-owner of Nostco Construction, to get the lowdown on home renovations, how to get started and when you need to surrender your tools to the pros. Q The new year is naturally a time for renewal – around the house, as in life. It’s a great time to start thinking about the renovation projects you plan to execute in the year ahead. But, all too often, people don’t know how to start the planning – or worse, they just dive right in without giving it proper thought. Before embarking on a hefty project like a kitchen, bathroom or a whole-house reno, what steps should be involved in the planning phase? A It is often best to begin by defining the project from a design perspective. The design can stem from your own vision, or from the expertise of a professional designer or architect. As the design is being refined it is best to bring in the contractor for the project in order to receive valuable “value engineering” and feasibility comparisons. To begin looking at your project, most professional contractors will require a financial commitment. Some people exercise another option, which is to allow the designer or architect to complete the entire preconstruction package (such as design, financial revue/ budget, permits, zoning, etc.) and only then begin to discuss the project with a contractor. However, in doing so, most people are losing out on the tremendously valuable insight of the people who will actually be bringing the vision to reality. If you retain the services of professionals then all you should have to do is:

• Choose design/select finishes, and • Provide the funds to complete the project. If you want to design it yourself then ensure that you have a complete and well-rounded design concept that takes construction feasibility weighed against budget into consideration. The budget is concurrent with the design and based off the design, so as the design changes, so will the budget. As you build the design and budget, you have to source materials/labour. By the end you should have a budget, scope of work, design and schedule for the project. This is what we call the “pre-construction package” and it acts as a blueprint for the project.

In the absence of such a package, the project is vulnerable to losing its direction. Each project is a journey comprised of numerous phases, you must connect the phases fluidly and anticipate the next corner. The biggest secret in quality construction is the valuable resource of talented designers and construction managers that define and plan the best path to completion. Wherever your construction journey takes you, ensure you invest the proper amount of time in planning out your path. You will know you are done the planning phase when you have answered all the questions about the renovation more or less and the only thing left to ask is, “When do we start?”

RENOMARK

planning is the secret to a successful renovation by JOE VACCARO Acting President, BILD

IN THIS COLUMN, I’M GOING TO LET YOU IN ON AN INDUSTRY SECRET.

Even though we’re a long way from fall – the renovation industry’s busiest season – there’s never been a better time to start looking for a contractor to finally tackle that renovation you’ve been putting off for a couple of years now. We’ve all been guilty of this – putting off the very important task of seeking out a reputable renovator until a mere few weeks prior to renovation season, only to find out that your city’s most sought-after contractor’s calendar is booked for the rest of the year. So why not make 2012 different? Much like a home purchase, major renovations require considerable prep work which involves some time-consuming elements such as obtaining permits or calculating budgets. In some instances, you may require the help of an architect to redesign your basement. In others, a building permit to add another floor to your detached home. These are all matters that need to be addressed in advance, and a professional contractor can be of tremendous help when it comes to planning your renovation in a timely fashion. A professional renovator can help you identify any legal actions required by your renovation, or recommend specialists such as architects or designers that will take care of the prep work in the early stages of your renovation, avoiding any delays. For this, of course, you will need to do your research and seek out a professional contractor, and February is a good time to start. Much like a trendy restaurant or a popular nightclub, a good renovator must be booked way in advance. Renovating your home is a big financial investment, so putting all that money into the hands of someone you called up the first week of September is a risky move. A good place to start your search is renomark.ca – home to the national RenoMark program and a database of professional renovators in 32 markets across seven provinces. Now in its 11th year, RenoMark has rapidly grown to be a highly respected brand of professional renovators who abide by a national Code of Ethics, as well as a renovation-specific Code of Conduct. The

latter specifies that the contractor will provide the homeowner with a detailed, written contract, offer a minimum two-year warranty, carry a minimum $2 million in liability insurance and hold all applicable licences and certificates. Simply visit renomark.ca to see if a Renomark program is administered in your geographical area, then use the “Find a Renovator” tool. Do your research by calling these renovators and requesting examples of past work, referrals or other ways they can demonstrate their professionalism and earn your business, such as recent awards or other recognitions. You can also take advantage of the program’s social media presence by seeking out the official Facebook page at facebook.com/renomark or twitter handle at twitter.com/renomark_ca. When it comes to a renovation, planning ahead can mean the difference between a solid investment and an expensive mistake, but it all starts with planning ahead.

JOE VACCARO Joe Vaccaro is Acting President of the Building Industry and Land Development Association (BILD). You can read more from Joe and BILD by visiting the Association’s official blog at bildblogs.ca.

any sugar-coating, she marshals readers through the renovation process, step by step, in easy-to-understand terms. In this bootcamp book she explains the different features you’re going to need to consider. She explains the differences between options you’re going to be given. She explains what you’ll need, who you’ll need and how the whole thing will fit together. You are going to renovate. These are the things to think about. By the time you finish this read you’ll be ready for what’s about to happen as the walls come down and the style cachet goes up! The reality is in every page. Some of it is classic advice. Some is information that is hard to digest when you’re overwhelmed by the options and expenses. Some of it, says Robin, is “information that you don’t know you need to know.” All of it is exactly what you can expect, step by step, when you take on a renovation. Full of great images as well as some light-hearted illustrations by Andy Donato (keep an eye out for his signature bird!) this book is the ideal preparation for anyone considering a kitchen reno. Robin Siegerman is a Registered Interior Designer and award-winning Certified Kitchen Designer. With over 20 years of experience she’s a published columnist and has done a podcast series of Renovation Bootcamp as well. Visit renovationbootcamp.net for more information.

Top 5 picks at

IDS12

Here’s a sneak-peek at some of the hottest products and displays at this year’s Interior Design Show January 26-29 | Metro Toronto Convention Centre | interiordesignshow.com

1 Moss & Lam showcased a giant version

3

of their new Polar bear table (that will be launching at Avenue Road). Moss & Lam is the studio of Deborah Moss and Edward Lam. As the lines between art and design are increasingly blurred, Moss & Lam can be considered artistic problem solvers, creating art and objects that appeal to our instinctual yen for things that are imaginative, whimsical and authentic. Since 1989 Moss & Lam have worked autonomously and collaboratively with some of the world’s finest designers to create art installations, furniture and accessories. Their work seamlessly merges digital and handcrafted techniques and draws on mythical and personal narratives, while prompting contemporary visions. Hovering between

4

many conventions, their work delights and enhances our experiences with visual poetry.
