When I was 26 and freshly out of university. I wanted to explore Canada before deciding where to plant my roots. Traveling across the country was an amazing adventure. I saw a lot and learned a lot. It opened my eyes to the difference between living in a big city versus a small town. It highlighted regional differences and made me love living in Canada even more.
If I did it now I think I’d get more out of it with the Internet and great information about different neighbourhoods. I think my travels and decisions would have been much better planned! WELLINGTON ST. WEST is bordered
by the Somerset St. Bridge to the east and Island Park Dr. to the west. The neighbourhood runs from Scott St. to the north and the Queensway to the south. The boundaries of Wellington St. West are easily blurred with the neighbouring communities of Westboro and Hintonburg, but many residents are quick to say the areas are quite distinct. Once all referred to as Mechanicsville, it’s establishing itself as a prime location for renters, buyers, shoppers and eaters! Buy local, eat organic, be consciously aware, and most definitely grow a beard! This is the
overall hipster vibe of Wellington St. West, but it’s not over-the-top like some trendy neighbourhoods. In fact, you can spend an entire day without even realize just how trendy it is. With so many local vendors, and the farmers market, there is no excuse not to eat fresh and local, while supporting your neighbours. Along Wellington there are numerous shops – many residents are owners or employees, and it creates a great sense of community pride, all wanting the area to thrive. are still parts of the neighbourhood that are in transition, but it won’t be long before developers and renovators takeover. The atmosphere here is exciting, fun and young. Wellington St. West is only a few kilometers away from the Ottawa Hospital, the Royal Ottawa, and many small malls. There are also quite a few schools in the area, including NotreDame and Nepean High School. In the summer there is the always popular Parkdale Market, and many smaller markets along Wellington. Wellington St. West is in a prime location. The area is close to the 417, the OC Transpo bus routes, and the new LRT station will be located only meters away at Tunney’s Pasture. Within biking distance to downtown and the NCR pathways, this area is perfect for those on foot or in a car.
