SANDY HILL, one of Ottawa’s oldest
suburbs, is bordered by the Rideau Canal and the Rideau River, with Rideau Street and the Byward Market area to the north, and Hwy 417 to the south. This expansive neighbourhood is best known for its proximity to the University of Ottawa as well as its many steep hills – which make walking around this neighbourhood a workout! Sandy Hill is a neighbourhood where you will quickly begin to recognize faces, where neighbours watch out for one another, and where people are found to bike or walk most of the time.
This area was once one of the most affluent neighbourhoods in Ottawa, and still boasts expansive mansions, but now they’re primarily home to university students. The further you get from campus, the more common it is to find more young families, older couples, and large embassies. Shops and restaurants are aimed at students needs. Coffee here is cheap, and not surprisingly, the beer is even cheaper! Affluent residents won’t be found biting into a burger at the local Royal Oak. Highway 417 is within blocks offering quick and easy access to the rest of the city. There is a bus
route that travels throughout the neighbourhood. You can hop on at one end of Sandy Hill, take the bus up the large hill on Somerset St., and then hop off at the top. Perfect for all us lazy folks too sleepy in the morning to climb that hill! This area is full of mature trees, steps from the Rideau Canal and the Rideau River, and the homes are historic, the streets quaint. What more could you ask for?

Don’t know where to start? Making a decision can be very liberating – like making the decision to move. Once you’ve got your mind made up and you’re ready to go, though, your momentum can come to a full stop because you just don’t know where to start. Start looking around two to three months before you give notice. You want to be able to gauge where the market is at. Get out and see places. Have your references, depoit cheque, credit check and all other info lined up so you are prepared to jump on any oportunities that arise. One of the most common questions I get is, whether to give notice first or to find a place first. This is a very tough call and depends on your finances and your ability to handle some risk. You need to give notice - it varies from province to province, but most landlords need 60 days – and that 60 days needs to start from the day your

rent is due. Give notice in writing. You can find an apartment first, and then give notice. It’s the safe route, but this will cost you. You’ll likely pay one or two months of rent to both your new and your old landlord where your notice period overlaps your new tenancy. You’re on the hook for the notice period that you’re legally obligated to give. You may ask your landlord if they’re flexible – in a hot market many landlords have a waiting list and can facilitate your early exit – but they don’t have to, so ask. Once you give notice, there’s no going back! I always found that it put the passion in me to find the right place. It can be frightening in a tight market, when apartments are in demand and vacancy is low. Hope this issue of Renters Guide can help. LIVING WITH ROOMMATES has many benefits: it can be fun, you can often afford a bigger place, and you can all pitch in on furniture and household items that can be kind of pricey to purchase alone. Having said that, living with roomies can get a little tricky if you don’t decide how to deal with the usual living costs that go along with rent. I’m talking about replenishables. the things that everyone in the household will use: toilet paper, food, dish soap, light bulbs, paper towels, etc. The sooner you choose the best way for you and your roomies to buy this stuff, the better. It will help you avoid fighting over who uses the most toilet paper.
Take turns buying: This works if – and only if – everyone agrees to it. If not, it’s chaos. You probably don’t want to buy toilet paper and just assume your roommate will grab it next time, because that roommate might never buy any. But, you also can’t live without toilet paper. Be clear — I’ll buy this pack; you buy the next. In one of my homes, my bathroom was on the main floor by the kitchen, so naturally it was used more frequently by everyone — guests and roommates alike. The two of us on the main floor tried to keep it stocked, but the upstairs roommates weren’t quick to help since they also had another bathroom. We all felt like we were constantly buying toilet paper. Decide who buys what and for where if you’re going to take turns. Same goes for groceries, cleaning supplies and anything else you might share. The slush fund: If you think it’s necessary, create a fund that you all contribute to that will be there
when you need essentials. Placing a jar in the kitchen works as long as everyone agrees not to use the funds for takeout (it can be tempting when you get low on groceries). Decide on an amount that everyone will contribute on a weekly or monthly basis, and confirm what the funds will be used to buy. Will they strictly be used for household supplies or will they pay for groceries too? Keep things separate: If you can’t all agree on the best way to deal with replenishables, it’s best to keep it all separate. If you’re living with someone you strictly consider a roommate, and not necessarily a friend, this is often the best bet. It can get tiresome to split up toilet paper but it can also avoid awkward scenarios and fights about money. There’s nothing wrong with keeping things to yourself, plus it can make your monthly budgeting a lot easier. Embrace family living: If you’re close with your roommates, you might not need an actual system. For some roommates, especially those that have lived together for a long time, these things just work themselves out. You’ll grab toilet paper when it’s on sale, and so will your roommate. You’ll make dinner, they’ll do the dishes, and vice versa. If you like to bake, and your roommates like to eat your baking, they’ll make sure the house is always stocked with flour. When you live like this, you have more of a family dynamic than a roommate agreement. It can be wonderful to have a relationship like this, but it’s not for everyone. Make sure you’re all on board before you start using your roomies’ shampoo or eating their cereal!

HERE A RE A FEW TIPS TO HELP you avoid finding damaged items at your destination: 1. CONSIDER PURCHASING BOXES FROM YOUR MOVER. The most common packing mistake we see is people getting free boxes at the grocery or liquor store and then putting too much weight in them. For example, using a large box to pack books and magazines may make it too heavy to lift, and the box might break during the move due to the weight.

If you’re not completely packed and ready on moving day, we can’t create that box wall early on and, this decreases the capacity of the items that can be moved at one time. It also eats up precious time and, therefore, money!
Use this rule of thumb: the heavier the item, the smaller the box. Be choosy about your boxes; free boxes from a grocery store that have been used to ship produce could contain insect larvae that may transfer to your belongings. 2. BE REALISTIC ABOUT THE NUMBER OF BOXES YOU NEED. Depending on how long you have lived in your current location, you will most likely underestimate your boxes requirement. Often, we hear of people who think 50 or 60 boxes will be enough, and then realize they need 250, two days before moving day. 3. START PACKING EARLY AND BE COMPLETELY PACKED WHEN THE MOVERS ARRIVE. Sometimes we arrive at a customer’s home and they’re not packed. There’s nothing more frustrating than trying to move a customer’s belongings while they are attempting to shove items into boxes and we get in each others’ way.
4. THINK AHEAD. Begin packing items you don’t use daily. As you pack your boxes move them to the front of your apartment and stack them along a wall near the front door. Say it takes 2.5 minutes, on average, to move a box from an upper bedroom to the truck. Having it on the main floor can shave 45 seconds off the time for each box. Saving 45 seconds multiplied by 200 boxes can save lots of time and money.
This also interferes with the optimal loading of the moving truck. We have a loading system where the first things we place in the truck are light items such as chairs, lampshades, cushions, etc; we place these items in the ‘attic’ (the area over the cab) of the truck. We can get lots of light items up there and they stay secure.
5. CONSIDER HAVING YOUR MOVING COMPANY PACK FOR YOU. We are skilled, have more experience and have standard-size small, medium and large boxes that are designed to fit into our trucks to create a perfect box wall for optimum efficiency and safety.
Next, we create a ‘box wall’ stacked to the ceiling to hold the items in the attic in place. We then stand plastic wrapped mattresses against the box wall and secure
