EDITORS’ NOTES

r

enting an apartment over owning a home makes lots of financial sense for people in many different life situations. Maybe you just can’t afford to buy a home or don’t want to spend your hard-earned money on one. Maybe you have a plan to buy a home in a few years, and want to start saving for a down payment. Or maybe you’re simply not interested in the cost and commitment that comes with being a homeowner. No matter why you’re renting an apartment, you need to know your rights as a tenant. As part of the renting process, your landlord must give you a copy of the agreement after you sign and return it. Since this document outlines all the terms you’ve agreed to, it’s an important document to have on hand. You should avoid breaking a lease if at all possible. Each lease agreement has its own penalties for not honouring the outlined terms. Be sure to check your lease to make sure you can handle the financial ramifications that come with breaking a lease — before you break it.

‘m that person – I love ringing in the new year. I admit it, I especially love the countdown – everything stops for that ten second count. It’s the end, and then it’s the beginning. I’ve always put a lot of stock into it, and that first second of that first day is transformative. Not everyone feels the way I do, but at least my friends and family indulge me! Every year I look forward to letting go of the past and making decisions for the new. I think it’s good to have a point – however symbolic – that allows you to step back and take a pause. Decide what comes with on the next part of your journey, and what will purposely be left behind. It doesn’t need to be the new year. In fact, it doesn’t need to be a set date, but it is a good idea to take the time to have a good long look at life and make decisions, consider change, take account of what you want and how to make it happen. One of the things I always reflect on is my home. Have I been storing things – holding onto possessions, clutter, the past – unnecessarily, or is it all still part of my life? Have I outgrown my space or has it outgrown me. Do I need to plan for a change: Storage? Decor? Organization? Relocation? I moved a lot more when I was younger – a new city, different roommates, cohabitating, growing my family. Not that I’d start looking at rental ads on January 1, but I’d identify it, put it in my plan for the new year. I’m not a ‘New Year’s Resolution’ person, but I guess you could call me a ‘New Year’s Organization’ person. I invite you to join me – think about all the things you’d like to leave behind in 2013 and all the new you’d like for 2014. If you’re ready for a move in 2014, we’re here to help. Our magazine and website, TheRentersGuide.ca, offer the best selection of apartments, informative articles and advice, making it easy to make your move!

quicktips

replace holiday stress with holiday joy by Hellen Buttigieg Holiday season strikes fear in tHe Hearts of

many. Instead of visions of sugar plums we get visions of mad mall dashes, credit card bills and lots of cleaning to do. Put years past behind you and make a few simple changes. These tips will help replace the holiday stress with holiday joy. avoid gifts that clutter: Give gifts that can be consumed rather than those which take up space. Consider giving candles, gourmet food baskets, vintage wines, fresh floral arrangements, jams and jellies, etc. Gift certificates are also appreciated by those who want to streamline their homes. Clear away the ‘every day’: For more impact and less clutter, remove your every day decorative items from tabletops and mantles before you display your holiday decorations. You can store them temporarily in the boxes that held your decorations. Help for the host: Hosting a holiday soirée this year? Don’t be a superhero – accept help. Make it a potluck. People enjoy contributing and it makes the meal more interesting. While you’re at it, consider putting your kids to work during the event or hiring students to help out. They can take coats as guests arrive, freshen up the appetizer plates and load the dishwasher. They’ll be learning valuable skills and perhaps making some extra money and you’ll be a more relaxed and joyful host! avoid mall madness: Do you get stressed when shopping for gifts at the mall this time of year? Do the long lineups and limited parking dampen your holiday spirit? If you hurry, there’s still time to shop online and have your items delivered in time. Many retailers offer free shipping or other incentives this time of year. Another option is to hire a personal shopper. Some major department stores actually offer this service at no cost, so ask. Make it meaningful: Connect to what the holidays are really all about – spending time and making special memories with the people you love. Make time for doing fun things together, like baking cookies, going downtown to see the holiday lights and festive store windows, renting TheRentersGuide.ca a favourite family movie or going skating at the local rink. An effective way to make time for these activities is to let go of the need to create the perfect home, buy the perfect gifts, and cook the perfect holiday meal. Perfection is unattainable, no matter how organized and talented you TheRentersGuide.ca are (especially this time of year).

Be an early bird: Wrap and ship your holiday gifts to out-of-town friends/family early to avoid rush postage costs and long lineups at the post office. track your spending: Consider paying by debit instead of credit when shopping for gifts to avoid the shock of your credit card statement in January. Another option is to put all your purchases on one credit card and only use that card for gift-buying; with most cards you can track your spending by viewing the balance online. Guilt-free Holidays: Take a day to catch up on unfinished business like filing, returning calls, etc. Most of these ‘loose ends’ take only a few minutes, but are put off because they don’t seem urgent. However, you still worry about getting them done, and it takes up space in your brain. Eliminate these energy leaks and you will be free to enjoy your holidays. Hire help if you need to. Under-decorate: If you find it overwhelming to decorate every room of your home for the holidays, consider a new approach. Decorate the one or two rooms you’ll use the most over the season and see how you feel. Chances are you and your family won’t miss the extra knick-knacks and you may even enjoy the holidays more because you’ll be less stressed. You will be especially appreciative when it comes time to take down the decorations and put them away. Pick a calendar that works: Invest time in choosing the right calendar system for you. Go to an office supply store and take a few minutes to look through the options. Are you a visual person who prefers a paper-based planner or a digital person who relates to an app or a computer program? Do you like a large desk blotter-type calendar or does a pocket-sized appointment book make more sense? Which format do you prefer: day-, week-, or month-at-aglance? Making the best decision for you now will pay off many times over the new year.

entertaining

Tips on hosTing

a holiday soiree

W

ith the holidays around the corner, entertaining season is in full swing with soirees to host, roast dinners to serve and plenty of get-togethers that scale from small and casual to large and formal. Here are some simple tips to make all your celebrations easy entertaining:

Set the Date – Choose one date that accommodates your schedule and stick with it! From 5 guests to 50, there will always be a scheduling conflict for someone, so don’t let that complicate your party. There are plenty of other holiday parties, send them a holiday card and let them know you’ll see them soon. Set the Menu – Whether it’s a few canapés and a signature cocktail or a seven course meal with wine pairings, plan out the meal everyone well in advance of the big date. This will help accomodate all dietary concerns such as allergies and intolerances of your guests, and helps build out your grocery list. TheRentersGuide.ca Set the Music - THe best way to spend more time refreshing drinks and socializing with your guests rather than worrying about the playlist is satellite radio. SiriusXM offers over 120 channels of commercial-free music to keep your firneds on the dance floor all night. You can even TheRentersGuide.ca

change the station from your phone. When the clock strikes ten turn on the Top 40 to keep the energy up! Set the Theme – Don’t limit you creativity! Themed parties make lasting impressions – maybe it’s the Hollywood Party with the award-winning cocktail or the Beach Party in December with the homemade sand that your guests will speak about for months to come. From home décor, fashion accents to themed charade topics and board games – stir up some fun and set the mood with a theme that’s eclectic or traditional. Set the Conversation – Not everyone’s a social butterfly, so enlist your chatty party guests or use conversation cards to get others mingling. Another bonus TheRentersGuide.ca tip is to put out less seating – people are more likely to chat while standing than sitting down. NC

finances

Why are you in debt?

O

B y Gai l Vaz -Ox lade

ften people who are in debt say they no longer want to be in debt. And often they take the steps to get themselves out. But, it seems to me, just as often people who claim they want to get out of debt do little to change their behaviour and their outcome. They keep on doing the things that got them into debt in the first place. Here are some questions you may want to ask about why you’re in the hole.

here’s nothing quite like the holidays in Ottawa. The halls of parliament are decked. The Rideau is aglow from bright lights and decorations reflecting off the glass-like surface, and the city becomes even more full of good cheer. You can’t help but enjoy the season, and Homestead makes the perfect home for the holidays - and the year through! Coming home to Homestead means being appreciated as a resident. It means enjoying an exceptional rental experience. It means having the comforts of home. From desirable neighbourhoods to exceptional customer service, that’s what you can expect with Homestead. The name says it all. Building on close to 60 years in the rental industry, Homestead has desirable communities across Ottawa – and throughout southern Ontario – and continues to grow. With a passion for the residential rental industry, Homestead owns all of the buildings it manages, and is a well established developer of apartment communities. This allows Homestead to have control over the quality of the buildings, grounds and suites, and of the service given to all residents. Buildings are renovated and updated as needed, and technology and modernizations are constantly being introduced. Green initiatives are a TheRentersGuide.ca constant consideration, utilizing elements like water retrofits, building automation and Energy Star appliances. All of these initiatives improve the lifestyle of residents and keep Homestead at the TheRentersGuide.ca forefront of the rental industry. 30G

Delivering a premium rental experience, Homestead is able to offer enormous variety of options to suit most any needs and lifestyles, from simple affordability to well-heeled luxury. Whether you’re looking for a quiet, suburban location on a tranquil side street with access to parks and greenspace or you need an über-urban location that puts you at the heart of Ottawa, there’s a Homestead community in the ideal spot. From tidy bachelors and one bedrooms to sprawling three-bedroom suites and townhomes – and everything in between – Homestead has just the size you’re looking for, to accommodate your family and your lifestyle. Amenities – which vary by community – add to the lifestyle, with options like indoor and outdoor pools, fitness facilities, squash and tennis courts and social rooms. Choose the location which best suits your needs. Living in a Homestead community will set the standard for your rental expectations. On-site management is available to assist residents 24 hours a day with any emergencies or concerns. Professional and attentive, they’re dedicated to creating and maintaining a high standard of comfort, cleanliness and security. Residents are accustomed to a top-notch rental experience and Homestead delivers. One of the features that has improved service is the ‘One Stop Media’ which has been installed in all rental properties. This high-tech feature keeps Homestead in touch with residents through LCD monitors in the high-traffic areas of the building, including the lobby and the laundry room. This enables Homestead to reach residents with news, information and relevant events. Weather updates, news and general entertainment content is also included. An environmentally responsible method of communications, it reduces the need for printing paper flyers to distribute community information. The informative website also includes news and updates – and makes the search for a new apartment simple and efficient. Each Homestead property is listed, including an overview of the building, its amenities and suites. Pictures, videos and floorplans make it easy to find the perfect fit. Homestead’s incredible portfolio of communities makesTheRentersGuide.ca it easy to find the perfect place to live, and with extensive community information on the website, homestead.ca, it’s easier than ever to find the perfect place to call home. Just think, by next holiday you could be celebrating with Homestead!

finances Do you buy stuff you don’t need? The biggest cue that you’ve got the impulse monkey on your back are the things you have bought but no used: the clothes with the tags still on, the shoes you have yet to wear, the new dishes you’ve used just once or twice in the six months that you’ve owned them. Impulse shoppers are the first to admit they have a problem and the last to do anything about it. If you’re an impulse shopper, you need to remove the fuel for the impulse. That means cutting up your credit cards – or disabling them in some other fashion – and limiting the amount of cash you carry. It also means leaving your debit card at home unless you’re headed out to take care of a need: gas, groceries, etc. When you do go shopping, you have to use a list and never go off-list. Window shopping is torture for the impulse shopper so don’t browse stores or participate in this female bonding ritual since you’re just teasing yourself by drooling over a bunch of stuff you don’t need. Do you use credit to buy things you can’t afford to buy with cash? Hey, when you spend money you don’t have by using your credit card, line of credit or overdraft, you’re doing the wrong thing, plain and simple. If you can’t afford to pay for something in cash today, you should not be buying that thing, I don’t care how important you think it is, how great a deal you’re getting, or how desperate you feel. Using credit is no way to get out of debt. Put away all forms of credit and commit to building yourself a budget that balances. If you want something, you’ll have to give something else up to accumulate the cash you need to buy it. If you can’t come up with the cash, you must not want it badly enough. Do you buy things for a one-time use that you could borrow from a friend or rent? Practically everyone is guilty TheRentersGuide.ca of this. You need something such as a sewing machine or power washer twice

TheRentersGuide.ca

a year so you go and buy one and then watch it – and the money you spent, likely on credit – sit and grow cobwebs (and interest charges?) What’s with us all? We have to own everything we ever use? In the old days friends borrowed from each other and stuff got way more use. Now our possessions are so much a part of who we are we a) hate to lend and b) hate to have to admit we don’t already have one. Dumb! And why do we feel we need to apologize because we don’t have the right kind of wine glasses?“Sorry, I only have these cheap glasses.”It’s a glass for heaven’s sake. Do you buy certain brands because they are a status symbol? While any car gets you from point A to point B, the high-cost, brand-name buggies come with“oohs”and“ahhs”from friends and relatives. Ditto the D&G sunglasses, the LV handbags, the CL shoes . . . I could go on forever. If you’re paying a premium to have a brand name, you have to ask

yourself why. Is it because you don’t have confidence in your own sense of style? Is it because you’re trying to emulate the dudes and dames of TV and movie fame, wearing what they wear, driving what they drive, eating what they eat? How come? Is your life so sad that you’re trying to escape? Hey, I’m all for spending your money on the things that bring you pleasure, so if you’re not using credit to make expensive brands part of your image, I’m not talking to you. But if you are using credit, what makes you think you have the right to this stuff if you can’t afford to pay for it?

Making winter travel plans? Tips for snowbirds and other Travellers It’s that tIme of year agaIn, when CanadIan snowbIrds make theIr plans to spend the wInter In warmer loCales.RSA, one of Canada’s leading travel insurance providers, surveyed more than 2,400 Canadian travel consumers and discovered there are different categories of snowbirds with varying travel habits and preferences. “As our population ages, the snowbird sector has grown and diversified,” says Erin Finn, director of underwriting for RSA’s travel insurance division. “Our research has found there is noticeable variation in travel habits between different categories of snowbirds, in terms of trip lengths, frequency and destinations.” In addition to traditional snowbirds – 65-and-ups who travel longer than 30 days at a time and typically spend their winters in the common U.S. sun destinations – there TheRentersGuide.ca is also a younger segment of snowbirds emerging.

They’re Baby Boomer age, 55 to 64, and they have their own unique preferences, typically favouring trips to more exotic, overseas locations. They’re also more likely to spend their time parasailing or trekking than lying on the beach. And, they tend to travel more frequently, but take slightly shorter trips than traditional snowbirds.RSA offers some recommendations for snowbirds and others buying travel insurance: • Don’t wait until the last minute. Talk to an experienced travel insurance broker and get a policy that suits your travel needs. • Ensure that you have adequate emergency medical insurance – up to $5 million – as well as Trip Cancellation & Interruption insurance, if you require it for your trip. • Ensure your policy has you covered for the entire duration of your trip. • Check to see what exclusions and limitations your policy contains. Are there conditions around your health status, the part of the world you’re visiting or the activities you’ll be doing? It’s a good idea to talk to your broker about your destination and the kinds of activities you have planned to make sure you have the right coverage. • Ensure you have access to 24/7, worldwide telephone assistance, should you have to report a claim or require travel assistance. • If you travel more than once a year, consider an annual plan that covers you for multiple trips. GinGerbread appLe upside-down cake

directions

Preheat the oven to 325°F. Grease a 10-inch cake pan. To make the topping, melt 4 tablespoons of butter in a small saucepan. Add the brown sugar and simmer over medium heat, stirring for five minutes, then swirl in the salt. Remove the saucepan from the heat and pour the mixture into the cake pan, spreading with a spatula to distribute evenly. Make circles of overlapping apple slices on top of the brown sugar. Chop any remaining slices and place them in the gaps. For the batter, blend 1/2 cup butter and 1/2 cup sugar in a standing mixer set on medium-low, then increase the speed to high and cream until the batter becomes light and fluffy. In a medium bowl, whisk together the egg, molasses, honey, buttermilk and vanilla. In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, salt, ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg. Alternate adding the egg mixture and the flour mixture to the creamed butter-sugar mixture, then pour the batter into the cake pan. Bake at least 45 to 50 minutes or until a tester inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Let cool on a wire rack for 10 to 15 minutes. Run a small knife around the edges of pan to loosen the cake, then place a serving platter over the cake and invert onto the platter.

t

his delectably moist gingerbread-spiced caramelized apple upsidedown cake is the perfect dessert for the chilly autumn and winter months. Dark, coppery and intensely flavoured, this delicious cake is made with dark molasses, honey, buttermilk and a trio of fragrant spices, and goes perfectly with a dollop of pillowy soft Calvados Whipped Cream or tangy creme fraiche. As tempting as it may be, don’t use a springform pan with a removable bottom, as the syrup will leak out and that would be very messy as well as being enormously tragic. ingredients serves 12 Topping: › 4 tbsp butter, plus extra for greasing pan › 1/2 cup dark brown TheRentersGuide.ca sugar › Pinch of salt › 4 large Golden Delicious apples, peeled, cored and cut into 1/4-inch wedges Batter: ›TheRentersGuide.ca 1/2 cup butter, at room temperature

1/2 cup sugar 1 large egg 1/3 cup dark molasses 1/3 cup honey 1 cup buttermilk 1 tsp vanilla 2 1/4 cups flour 1 tsp baking soda 1/2 tsp salt 1 tsp ground ginger 1 tsp cinnamon

› 1/2 tsp freshly ground nutmeg Calvados whipped cream: › 1/2 cup whipping cream, chilled › 1 tsp maple syrup › 1 tsp Calvados

Serve warm or at room temperature with very softly whipped Calvados Whipped Cream, made by whisking the cream with the syrup and Calvados in an electric mixer until cream holds soft peaks.

moving within the province. Although the move is still considered intraprovince, different rates may apply if the move is considered “Long Distance.”

Professional moving can be a very technical business. There are industry-specific terms to describe moving processes and products that most people have never heard before. No need to worry.

Local move: A move in which all stages of moving take place near the moving company’s origin.

Consider the following list your intro to the Moving Language course; you’ll be saying pass the stretch-wrap before you know it! Some helpful terms Appliance dolly: A special dolly with straps to help load and unload large items such as appliances and oversized furniture.

compensate for the higher cost of fuel. When getting a quote, be sure to ask your mover,“Will this be the final cost, or are there additional fees?”

Larger screen TV dolly: A special hard-cased enclosed box with wheels that can safely accommodate any largescreen television to allow it to be moved safely. If you have a large screen TV, be sure your mover has this specialized equipment to make sure it does not get damaged during your move.

Corrugated: Describes a type of cardboard used to make boxes for moving and storage. Corrugated boxes have multiple layers of cardboard called “fluting” that give strength and durability to the box’s structure.

Binding estimate: A flat price based upon a given inventory meaning no matter how long the job takes, the flat price is always paid. This is typically restricted to situations when an on-site estimate is performed. Bill of lading: A contract between the mover and the customer that also acts as a receipt. Make sure you understand TheRentersGuide.ca everything on the bill before you sign it. Fuel surcharge: When gasoline prices are in a period of flux, some movers will charge the customer an added fee TheRentersGuide.ca in addition to the cost of the move to

Dish cells: Cardboard inserts that provide individual cubicles for your dishware within a cardboard box. Dish cells give extra support to breakable dishes and prevent the box from caving or allowing direct contact between pieces. Internal move: A move in which the items stay in the same building. Internal moves are useful for preparing your home or office for painting, carpet cleaning, furniture rearrangement and holiday decorating. LD: Short for long distance move. Many provinces regulate the moving industry based on the distance the items are

Non-binding estimate: When an in-home estimate cannot be conducted, the customers give a description of items to be moved. The mover then gives the customer his best guess of what the move will cost based on his previous experience with similar jobs. These estimates are typically requested by the customer last minute, agreed to over the phone and are subject to change. Stretch-wrap: A thin plastic packing and moving material used to secure moving blankets covering your items during the moving process. Stretch-wrap is used to protect your furniture from precipitation, sweat and tearing. Shrink-wrap: A thicker plastic, which requires heat to adhere to furniture. Typical items do not require packaging this thick for moving. Like learning any new language, it’s important to ask questions. If there is a term you do not understand, ask the representative from your moving company to clarify. Confusion about some moving terms is not only frustrating, it can be costly. Give your small space

big

impact TheRentersGuide.ca

TheRentersGuide.ca 38G

Decorating a small interior definitely has its challenges, but no matter the size and with a little know-how it’s possible to create a space that feels grand. If you are unsure how to create drama in small quarters here are a few big ideas that pack some punch: • Area rugs – A simple small rug is tempting, but anchor the space with something more visually interesting. Go for a coloured pattern you love and make sure the rug is a proper fit to ground all of the furniture. If you go too small, the furniture will look out of place. • Sofa – Finding the right scale furniture can be tricky, but consider one large sofa that accommodates all seating in one swoop. A slim, neutral coloured sectional or customizable configuration will make your small room feel more airy. When it comes to furniture in a small spaces, less is more. • Fireplace – Create a dramatic, but functional focal point. Electric fireplaces are plug-and-play and provide the flexibility of heating a room or simply adding ambiance with flame-only options. Look for a space-saving wall mount or a statement mantel. The Opti-myst line by Dimplex offers both. • Artwork –Scaling up artwork can be a really effective TheRentersGuide.ca use of space. Use large art to create a single focal point that anchors the other items in the room. Make sure to select art that ties your colour scheme together and most importantly, reflects your personal style. NC

The Best Reasons to

Rent By Jane Herman

W

ould you rather spend your free time seeing the latest movies or grouting your bathroom tile? Would you prefer to spend your extra money each month on unexpected furnace repairs or sock it away in TheRentersGuide.ca mutual funds? TheRentersGuide.ca TheRentersGuide.ca 40G

TheRentersGuide.ca

For reasons such as these, more and more time-pressed individuals, empty nesters, single parents and young professionals are choosing to rent. Here’s why: Hassle-Free Living When you rent, you’ll never have to call a plumber, electrician or handyman again! Renting frees you from the cost and hassle of all home maintenance and repairs. Empty-nesters can happily shed house-related chores and move closer to entertainment, restaurants and shopping, while young professionals can enjoy a simpler lifestyle and shorter commute. Affordability By renting, you’ll be able to afford to live in an area that might otherwise be out of your price range. And, unless you’re planning on staying in a house for more than five years, you risk losing money if you buy a home. Mortgages are amortized so you’re paying mostly interest in the first few years. Add in property tax, insurance, maintenance costs and the fees associated with selling the house and five years of renting can be significantly less than owning. The Rewards of Renting Renting gives you the freedom to invest your savings in stocks, mutual funds, a small business, your education, or a vacation, instead of a home. Lock in Utility Costs In most cases, you will not have to incur bills when you rent. In many apartments the cost of utilities are included in your rent. Because of fluctuating market prices, utility rates can rise dramatically. As a renter, you will not have to bear these cost increases directly. Apartment Living Offers Services When you lock yourself out of your apartment, the property manager can always let you in. Likewise, you can often count on someone being there to receive a parcel when you’re at work or away from your home. Some apartment communities include concierge services that offer everything from babysitting to housekeeping, pet care, and grocery shopping. Now that’s for me! Superior Amenities Packages Apartments have evolved, and many now offer a package of amenities and services that cannot be easily or affordably replicated in a single family home, like onsite fitness centres, swimming pools, tennis and squash courts, business centres, movie screening rooms and party facilities. Never Be Lonely! When you rent, you’ll enjoy the benefits of living in a community with friends and neighbours all around you.

TheRentersGuide.ca

Renting offers a Myriad of Lifestyles As a renter you can sample life in an urban loft, midtown highrise, or restored coach house.

Baby in Tow Choose your apartment based on the neighbourhood school, park, library or day care services that are best suited to your particular needs. Park Underground If your building includes underground parking, you’ll never have to deal with the dash to your car on cold, wet mornings! Professional Management Many of today’s owners are large public and private firms who have invested for the long term. You’ll reap such benefits as: convenient on-line leasing and maintenance requests; 60-day no risk trial periods; 24 hour maintenance guarantees; resident chat facilities and rent-to-own programs! There is Sure to Be A Coffee shop Within Throwing Distance Wherever you choose to rent, you’ll be able to wake up and smell the coffee – now that’s the best reason of all!

safety

Oh-Christmas tree how fast can you burn?

A

ccording to legend, the Christmas tree was first introduced to Canada long before Confederation, in 1781. This first tree, decorated with white candles, was a balsam fir cut from the dense forest in the region that is now the city of Sorel-Tracy, Quebec.

It was beautiful but perilous and even though we’re no longer using lit candles as tree ornaments, the risk of fire remains real. “Keep the tree watered,” says Wayne Ross, an insurance expert at Aviva Canada. “That is our mantra at this time of year. Not only does it create a fragrant ‘winter wonderland’ atmosphere, but a wet tree is a safer tree.” Here are some other safety tips to help keep your home not only festive, but safe as well: • When buying your tree, make sure the needles don’t fall out when you bounce the tree on the ground. These types of trees tend to dry out very quickly, meaning they will also burn very quickly. • Don’t overload electrical outlets with too much lighting and/or extension cords. • Under no circumstances leave a lit Christmas tree unattended. If you’re out for the evening, be sure to unplug the lights. • Never place lit candles near your tree. Just a few thoughtful steps at this busy time of year will make sure your home and family are safe and protected.
