t

he end of November rolls around and then it’s a holiday marathon that doesn’t stop until we reach the finish line on January 1. Do you realize the convenience that apartment living offers over the holidays? I don’t want to hear that your apartment is small, you can’t have many people over. Au contraire. I’ve always had the home that was the holiday destination, whether for a feast or a fête, there’s never been a lack of room – it just takes some planning. I’ve moved the furniture out of the way and rented a big table and extra chairs. Doesn’t that seem the logical thing to do for the once-a-year you need seating for 15, instead of having a dedicated dining room you rarely use? I’ve been lucky enough to live in buildings where there are party rooms. I book my dates months in advance. I’ve never had a guest list too large for the party room – and it saves me the deep clean of my own place before guests arrive. Many party rooms have upscale features like a fireplace, piano, catering kitchen and bar Even a sound system for dancing. When I go to parties at the apartments of family and friends, I always check if there’s a guest suite I can rent. They’re often available at a nominal fee. It’s so much more convenient and comfortable than a late night cab. Guest suites come to be like mini-vacations, especially if you’re visiting friends and family who live some distance away. I wouldn’t want to impose on my host further, so it’s an ideal solution! Apartment entertaining is also fabulous because there are no worries about parking, no last minute driveway to shovel, and most apartments are convenient to public transit so there’s no excuse for guests who don’t drive. You’re ready for holiday rental living, and we’re here to help. Our magazine and website, TheRentersGuide.ca, offer the best selection of apartments, informative articles and advice, making it easy to make your move!

Make future holidays merrier

by properly packing

SEASONAL DECORATIONS By Chuck Resnick

Holiday preparations such as tree trimming, present wrapping and hanging lights help get us in the holiday spirit and are lots of fun. But thoughtful packing of seasonal decorations and materials at the end of the holidays for the next year, can keep the fun in what is for some, a stressful time. In other words, it pays to plan, even 12 months ahead.

Lights • To prevent tangles, wrap lights around empty gift wrapping paper tubes. • Leave the plug accessible by taping the ends of the light strands to the end of the tube. Next year you can quickly test the lights before unwinding them. • Store coloured lights in a dark place to prevent fading – especially blues, greens and purples.

Here are some tips from Two Men and a Truck to keep in mind while packing away TheRentersGuide.ca holiday decorations:

Wrapping paper • Hanging garment bags provides good storage for wrapping paper rolls. Use outside pockets for gift tags, cards and tissue paper. • To protect used rolls of paper, cut an empty wrapping paper tube from end to end and slide it over the roll. • Ribbons and bows can be saved and reused, pack loosely so they keep their shape.

Delicate items • Wrap breakables in paper or bubble wrap. Do not use newspaper - the print may wear off on ornaments. Use tissue or

Some other considerations • Wrap holiday candles individually in cellophane and store in a cool place so they do not melt together.

Careful packing and organization prevents damage and breakage, and ensures you can find everything next year. It is worth taking the extra time to organize and preserve your decorations for next year.

20G

packing paper. Instead of throwing away used paper or junk mail, run it through a paper shredder, it makes great packing filler. • Decorations that contain photographs or food should be sealed in an air tight bag to keep them safe. Sealing photos preserves them and the scent from any food item will attract insects or mice wherever they are stored. • Boxes with dividers are best to pack ornaments in. There are cardboard boxes made especially for fragile items. They come with adjustable inserts that forms individual cells for delicate items. These “Dish Pack” boxes are very popular at all our Two Men and a Truck branches. • Keep extra hangers, hooks and ornament parts in a labelled bag or box.

• Pack an “open first” box. Place the decorations you use first in here with essentials such as extension cords. • Use a wardrobe box to hang and store seasonal clothing that you only wear twice a year like that special snowman sweater from your mother-in-law or that flashing Christmas tie. This way you can find it, wear it, and store it away on a hanger easily. • If you haven’t used a decoration in a few years donate it. If it is damaged, get rid of it. • Take special care if you are storing your items in a damp area like a basement. Don’t store boxes near sources of heat and moisture. • The most important tip is to label every box. The more detailed the description, the easier it will be to find things. Use different colours to distinguish different holidays. For example, use orange for Halloween, brown for Thanksgiving, and red or green for Christmas. • Take a digital photo of special care items like snow globes or wreaths, print them off on regular paper and tape the photo to the outside of the box as an easy description of what’s inside. All Two Men and a Truck branches in Canada offer a variety of storage boxes and packing supplies suitable to store all your decorative treasures. Visit twomen.ca for a location near you.

THE RIGHT MOVE

Take as much care finding a mover as you do shopping for an apartment BY TED WHITEHEAD

Moving into a new apartment should be an exciting process and a positive life step We feel so strongly about this at the Federation of Rental-housing Providers of Ontario (FRPO), that we developed and launched our Certified Rental Building Program (CRBP) to help identify well-run apartment buildings for those seeking quality and professionalism in their new home. We recommend that anyone searching for rental accommodations do some “homework” and look into the building’s track record. The CRBP requires adherence to stringent standards to become certified, and is another tool shoppers can use in making their decision. Although there is no official certification for movers in Ontario, some research ahead of time can save you a lot of headaches and expense in the long run. From an apartment standpoint, hiring reputable, professional movers is a smart idea for many reasons. If you are moving from an apartment, carrying heavy and large items can be tricky. If you or those helping you move cause damage, you will most likely be responsible for the cost to fix it. Having the proper equipment and knowledge to maneuver pull-out sofas and queenor king-sized box springs around corners without gouging drywall is one TheRentersGuide.ca example of where trained movers have experience. The same goes for moving into the apartment at the other end. Of course, there’s also the trip in between. Short hauls may be more

TheRentersGuide.ca

forgiving than long ones, but even in a few kilometers, poorly secured objects can shift in a truck or van and cause problems. There is also an issue with how well boxes are packed. Professional movers understand how to protect fragile items, and the order of stacking that minimizes the overall potential for damage. At this time of year, weather is a serious consideration as well. Reputable moving companies have techniques in place to help keep the residence they are leaving and the apartment they are moving the items into from clean of snow, slush and salt. They also have experience driving and parking loaded trucks in slick road conditions. So how do you find a good mover? In some ways, it’s like finding an apartment. Ask around. See who your family and friends have used and find out whether they were happy with the service. There’s also the Internet – a valuable resource at your fingertips. A good source of information is the Canadian Association of Movers (movers.net) which features a member directory. Chuck Resnick, vice president, Two Men And A Truck – Canada, a leading residential apartment moving company offered these three tips apartment renters should consider: t 8IFO NFFUJOH XJUI NPWJOH companies, make sure to ask them

if they are insured and bonded. Also find out how they arrive at their charges. Be specific. No one likes surprises. t 8JMM UIF NPWJOH DPNQBOZ CF providing you with a free written estimate? t 8IFO NFFUJOH XJUI NPWJOH companies, ask them about their training programs and what you can expect of their movers on move day. Once you zero-in on potential moving companies, ask questions again. Compare more than prices; learn exactly what services they provide and whether they are experienced in moving any specialty items you may own, such as a piano. Price out having the pros pack your items vs. you doing it yourself. Again, you may find that in the long run, it pays to pay for that service. The point is that your new apartment is your home – and the furniture and accessories you own are important aspects of your surroundings. Take your time and choose the mover and apartment building that will best enhance that ever-important feeling of coming “home.” Visit frpo.org and crbprogram.org

quicktips

Boxing match Sort, store, showcase: find the right box for your needs By Hellen Buttigieg

N

eed help clearing clutter and creating a cleaner look? Utilize boxes. But beware – all boxes are not created equal. Some are for storing, some for sorting, and some for showcasing. Find boxes that will help you do whichever task needs to be accomplished. For storage, make sure they’re strong and sturdy, and don’t forget to label them effectively. For sorting, make sure they’re big enough, but not too cumbersome to carry from room to room. For showcasing, make sure they’re stylish. Lately, a trend has developed to put great-looking storage containers on display, creating an interesting accessory while keeping necessities close at hand.

NAME THAT ROOM Rooms that don’t have a specific purpose often become dumping grounds for clutter. Before you begin de-cluttering, go through your home room by room and determine how you want to use each space. Identify which items support the purpose of the room and which ones should be moved elsewhere. Keep a few boxes handy so you can easily transport smaller items to their appropriate rooms. FREEZE EASY Clear containers, like plastic shoeboxes, work great at keeping small items organized in the freezer. They’ll stay put rather than slip all over each other. Many freezers come with dividers. Have a look at your manual to see if you have the option of ordering these from the manufacturer. COHESIVE = CALM. Create both impact and a sense of calm by choosing baskets or boxes in a similar style to use throughout your home. Whether you like wicker or leather, brightly coloured or neutral, consider buying extras as you may not be able to find the same ones again later. PHOTOS TAKING OVER YOUR SPACE? Don’t let your TheRentersGuide.ca photos become damaged and forgotten by leaving them piled in grocery bags or scattered in various places. Gather them up and use acid-free photo boxes to organize and enjoy them for years to come. Just one of these boxes often TheRentersGuide.ca holds about 1,000 photos, so it’s a real space saver as well.

Create broad categories for each box and label the outside. Next, use the divider cards that come with these boxes to create subcategories. For example, a broad category could be Vacations and subcategories within that could be Disney World 1999, Eastern Caribbean Cruise 2001 and Summer Resort 2002. Alternatively, you could file photos chronologically with each box representing a specific year. DIVIDE AND CONQUER Anytime you have a vast open storage area (like a chest), think of creative ways to subdivide it to keep it organized. Break big areas into smaller ones by using containers of various sizes. You can reuse the packages that regular household items come in: tissue boxes, cheque boxes and baby-wipe containers. In addition, you can subdivide using drawer dividers, shelves and stacking trays. COLLECTIONS OR CLUTTER? If your collections are hidden away and forgotten in the corner of your closet, they’re clutter. Collections have their place but they need to be displayed in a way that reflects their meaning to you. If they bring you pleasure, bring them out of hiding and give them a place of honour. Whether you collect coins, cards or cameras, you’ll get more enjoyment from your collection if you display the items as a group. Small items can be mounted and framed in shadow boxes, which can hang on the wall or sit on a table. Larger items stay dust-free when they’re displayed in a shelving unit with glass doors. Avoid crowding them – items are more esthetically pleasing when they have some breathing space around them.

INSTANT LIVING ROOM

makeover ideas BY YANIC SIMARD

1

THE COFFEE TABLE I find that coffee tables are often too bare, lacking warmth from accessories. You should focus most of your energy here. Collect items from around the home - use a wood or chrome tray and decorate it with a vase or pretty drink pitcher from the kitchen, and fill it with fresh or even artificial flowers. All you need is a few stems of larger-headed flowers like hydrangeas if you decide to go with fresh. Though I’m not the biggest fan of artificial flowers, I must admit there are some great options out there today!

2

“DEAD” CORNERS Empty angles can be problematic but on the flip side can be easily solved. The trick is to add height, which becomes interest. If you’ve got a club chair and aren’t sure what to put behind it, a tall triangular book case can often be a good solution. Stack books, vases and other accessories at varying heights on the shelves.

3 TheRentersGuide.ca DO YOU WANT YOUR LIVING ROOM TO LOOK NICELY DECORATED, BUT

feel like you haven’t got the money to do it? Are you tight on cash, and does your home reflect that? I’ve got five great stylist tips that can create a fully TheRentersGuide.ca decorated look without having to spend a fortune.

PILLOWS Pillows are one of my favourite items of all time – they are an easy method of bringing colour, texture and pattern into a space, and the best part is they are non-committal. You can change them when you’re ready for something new; you can TheRentersGuide.ca rotate them from room to room. You can never have too many pillows. Pillows are evidently great on a sofa

How to decorate

smallspaces Divide and conquer a space if it’s at a premium in your home Shown left, Hunter Douglas’ Skyline Gliding Window Panels feature a versatile track system that allows them to be used as a room divider as well as a window treatment

Bigger isn’t always better. These days, renters no longer covet more space than they need. While many people are choosing to live in smaller spaces, they still wish to have a graceful and decorative home. The decorating experts at Hunter Douglas – one of Canada’s leading manufacturers of custom window fashions – offer the following tips for scaling style and elegance to fit more intimate spaces:

A d d t e x t u r e Texture can be used in place of a pattern to add interest. MATCHING FURNITURE I like when rooms look like they’ve taken years to put together, even when they haven’t. If you’ve got a furniture set with a matching sofa, loveseat and side chair, try breaking up the pieces and swapping them with other pieces you have in other rooms. If you have a leather sofa in the den, switch it with your matched fabric sofa from your family room. It’s all about mixing and matching to create something harmonious, but most of all unexpected.

ACCESSORIES The finishing touches of a room are indefinitely the most important. Accessorizing is the last step upon TheRentersGuide.ca completion of a room. Instead of

taking the afternoon to go out shopping for these final items, take the afternoon and spend it searching around your home, for items you already have. The key is to try and bring in pieces that relate in colour and texture. You can never go wrong with glass or reflective elements, they will match any décor. If you decide that you want to bring in a little bit of “new” and only want to spend a little bit of money, then here are a few tips: » Set a strict budget for yourself of just $200-$300. (You will be amazed at how much you will get for such a little amount of money!) » The trick is to spend wisely – don’t go over your budget » Go to more than one store. My advice is to go to at least three different places, that way you have comparable items to access. YANIC SIMARD is the principal designer of the TIDG. [dg ]da^YVn ZciZgiV^c^c\ Signature cocktail- Avoid being the bartender all night and create a fun, festive signature cocktail. Create an area where guests can serve themselves from a decorative punch bowl with holiday-themed glassware, allowing you to enjoy the party and mingle with your guests. Keep wine and beer on hand for easy self-serve refreshments.

W

ith all the hustle and bustle of the festive season, it’s not uncommon to feel overwhelmed at the idea of planning a party or family gathering. Hosts are always looking for easy entertaining ideas that will save time and make their guests merry. Here are five simple tips for easy party planning: Assign tasks– Embrace pot-luck style and ask guests to bring a dish in lieu of a gift. Assign someone to make a holiday playlist or pick up extra ice. Most guests are happy to contribute and help make the party a success.

TheRentersGuide.ca

Decorate simply– Instead of investing in costly decorations, simply spruce up your space with scented candles, seasonal fresh flowers and vintage holiday ornaments. Place a few ornaments in a glass vase or atop a cake stand with greenery for a stunning centerpiece. Ensure lighting in the room is warm and subdued to make your guests feel at home. TheRentersGuide.ca

DIY coffee bar– As the celebration winds down, it’s time to bring out the coffee, tea and hot chocolate. Instead of slaving away in the kitchen making multiple drinks, opt for a single-serve home brewer, says leading brand, Bosch. Their Tassimo T47 easily allows guests to brew their own customized hot beverages with the touch of a button. It makes the perfect cup of coffee, espresso, cappuccino or latte in under a minute with its patented barcode technology. For a festive touch, serve with candy cane pieces, chocolate shavings and cinnamon to garnish. Relax and have fun- The most important tip for any good party host is to relax and enjoy themselves. Focus on what really matters – celebrating the spirit TheRentersGuide.ca of the season and enjoying the company of friends and family. NC

LESLIE STYLES, FOODIE & TRAVEL AFICIONADO, SHARES SOME DELICIOUS DISHES FOUND ON HER TRAVELS AROUND THE WORLD.

NIGELLA’S CHOCOLATE CHERRY TRIFLE DIRECTIONS

Slice the chocolate pound cake into thick pieces and spread generously with cherry jam, rather like making big jam sandwiches, and layer in the bottom of a large, wide trifle bowl, squishing the cake down. Then pour over the cherry brandy so that the cake soaks it up — trifle should be boozy! Top with all of the drained cherries, being sure to push some against the side of the bowl, because that’s what you’ll see when the trifle is served. Cover with cling wrap and leave to macerate while you make the custard. Melt 4 ounces of chocolate in a saucepan, over medium-low. Once the chocolate is melted, set aside while you get on with the custard. In a saucepan warm the milk and cream. Whisk the egg yolks, sugar, and cocoa in a large bowl. Pour the warm milk and cream into the bowl whisking it into the yolks and sugar mixture. Stir in the melted chocolate, scraping the sides well with a rubber spatula to get all of it in, and pour the custard back into the rinsed saucepan.

i

nspired by the same sinfully sensational ingredients as a Black Forest Gateau, namely several layers of chocolate Genoise, Kirsch-flavored Morello cherries, whipped cream and chocolate shavings, Nigella Lawson has created a recipe for Black Cherry Trifle that is both beautiful to look at and achingly delicious to eat. I made this glorious ‘pud’ for a recent dinner party, and was given a thumping endorsement by all. Nigella suggests cheating and buying some chocolate cake and then tweaking it to make it your own. “I’m all for making life easier, and what makes my life easier when I have a crowd coming for supper, is to buy something and then make it even better. Once liquor and fruits are added, no one will tell the difference!” This is truly heaven in a bowl. INGREDIENTS Serves 16 › 2 chocolate pound cakes, about 12 oz each

› 1 1/3 cups heavy cream plus 1 tablespoon

› 1 cup black cherry jam

› 8 egg yolks

›TheRentersGuide.ca 1 1/2 cup cherry brandy

› 1/2 cup sugar plus 1 tablespoon sugar

› 4 cups drained sour cherries

› 1/3 cup cocoa powder

Custard: › 4 oz bittersweet chocolate (at least 70 per cent cocoa), chopped

Topping: › 3 cups whipping cream

›TheRentersGuide.ca 1 1/3 cups whole milk plus 1 tablespoon

› 1 oz bittersweet chocolate grated

Cook over a medium heat until the custard thickens, stirring all the time. Make sure it doesn’t boil, as it will split and curdle. The custard will get darker as it cooks and the flecks of chocolate will melt once the custard has thickened. And you do need this thick, so don’t panic so much that you stop cooking while it is still runny.

Admittedly, it continues to thicken as it cools and also when it’s chilling in the refrigerator. Once it is ready, pour into a bowl to cool and cover the top of the custard with cling wrap to prevent a skin from forming. When the custard is cold, pour and spread it over the chocolate cake layer in the trifle bowl, and leave in the refrigerator to set, covered in cling wrap overnight. (If you’ve saved half the cherries, top the custard with them at this point). When you are ready to decorate, softly whip the cream for the topping and spread it gently over the layer of custard, and grate some good quality chocolate over top, and serve. Thanks Nigella, for my new favourite dessert! our apartment search will be more successful if you know in advance what information your landlord will require from you when you make an application to rent. To ensure that your application goes as smoothly as possible, take some TheRentersGuide.ca time to compile the appropriate information (such as contact names and phone numbers) before you go TheRentersGuide.ca to visit any apartments in person so it is easily accessible when you need it

TheRentersGuide.ca 32G

Once you’ve found that perfect apartment, the next step will be to complete a rental application form. Completing this standard form will provide your landlord with some basic information about you: your current residence (or landlord); your rental history – if you have one; your employment history and/or references, personal references, credit references and banking information or a reference letter from your bank. “It’s also helpful to have a real pay stub to verify your employment,” says Annette Mincer of Direct Properties. Some applicants, it seems, unfortunately do attempt to falsify employment information.

required to submit with your application. Without a deposit to establish a contract, the landlord cannot process your application. Keep in mind that the last month’s rent is not a “security deposit” (which were declared illegal in Ontario in the 1970s), but rather a deposit that is held in trust by the landlord and then applied to the last month’s rent when you terminate your lease. If you remain in the apartment for more than a year you should receive annual interest on your deposit. If the rent is increased during the term of your tenancy, the accumulated interest is applied to top up your last month’s rent deposit so that it remains equivalent to the total of a month’s rent. You should be aware, and agree to have the landlord conduct a credit check on you. This is a standard procedure and does not violate the Privacy Act. The landlord does need your permission to run a credit check, this is usually included in the rental application. If you are not employed (if you are a student, for example), you may need to on time and in full each month. If you have a guarantor this means that it is

their responsibility to pay your rent if you can’t, and they are as financially liable for the rent as you are. If you are a new immigrant, be prepared to present all of your immigration documentation, as well as the first and last month’s rent. You will also need to be able to verify that you can pay the rent throughout the term of your lease. If you have sufficient funds in your bank account to cover the rent for the term of the lease, but are not employed, this can sometimes be problematic. Be aware that it is illegal for a landlord to try to collect all of the rent from you in advance; however you may be asked for a guarantor or to submit post-dated cheques. Some residents mistakenly think they can get out of a lease any time they want. If you need to terminate your tenancy before your lease expires you must give the landlord 60 days notice to try to re-rent the apartment. You are legally responsible for the rent until it is re-rented or until the termination of the lease, whichever happens first. When you fill out a rental application, make sure that it’s the apartment you TheRentersGuide.ca really want. You’re putting down a deposit on it and, if approved, it’s yours. By doing your research and knowing what area you want to live in, what you can afford and what type of apartment and amenities you need, you’re sure to find the perfect place – and when you do, you’ll know it.

to a wall as this may damage insulation and create a shock or fire hazard. Instead, use insulated fasteners to hold light strings in place, rather than metal nails or tacks that could damage insulation and expose live wiring. And always have a working carbon monoxide and smoke alarm.

As you get into the joyful spirit, getting the lights out, unwrapping ornaments and planning beautiful displays to create that “wow” factor, remember to keep safety precautions in mind. CSA Group, a leading testing and certification organization, would like to remind everyone of the following safety tips to help have a safe and happy holiday.

Power though dinner, but watch the juice – Don’t overload extension cords by using too many electronics. Use heavy duty extension cords for high wattage decorations and large electronically-animated displays. And make sure your apartment is capable of handling the electrical load of multiple lights and décor. If in doubt, contact a licensed professional to inspect your electrical system.

Shine safely – Let your inner designer sparkle, but be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions when arranging electrical items, such as lights or electronic decorations to avoid potential electrical shock or fire hazards. Turn off the electricity to the supply outlet before working with outdoor wiring and never run an electrical cord through a doorway or under a carpet. Keep it real – Spray snow can give the look of the real thing, but be sure your other decorations aren’t imitations. Look for the mark from an accredited certification organization such as CSA Group on animated displays, light strings and extension cords. For outdoor decorations, TheRentersGuide.ca ensure items are marked and certified for outside use and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Bright lights not fiery sights – Buy flame-resistant decorations and never place open flames or candles near flammable materials, such as TheRentersGuide.ca wreathes, trees or paper decorations. Never nail or tack lighting strings 38G

Money Matches B y Gai l Vaz -Ox lade Money Matches #1 Do you think you have to be birds of a feather when it comes to money to make a relationship work? And if opposites do attract, how do you compensate for your very different money styles? Some people seem to think that because a body doesn’t match yours when it comes to how you manage your money, your relationship is doomed. That may be true if you don’t consciously make the effort to iron out your difference. Even people who are money matches have to work at making their relationship successful. Marriage is work! Don’t let anybody tell you different. The problem is that most of us go into marriage all glowing and hot, never thinking about how we are similar to or TheRentersGuide.ca different from our mates. Since the very idea of talking about money is anathema to romance, people just avoid the issue. And when you and your mate are on the same page about a lot of other things – how you’ll raise your family, the spirituality

TheRentersGuide.ca

you share, the way you feel about life in general – money tends to be the elephant in the room. Some people contemplating a longterm relationship don’t even know how different their attitude is from that of their mate. Later, when they clash, they can’t understand how they can be so far apart in their money personalities when they’re together on so many other fronts. Or worse, they think the conflict will“just work itself out.”Hmmm. If this seems to be a bigger deal in today’s world than it was just a generation ago, it is. Once upon a time the majority of women did not work. And it was the rare woman who made more than her mate. So guys made the money along with all decisions about what to do with it. Now that our roles in life have changed, so have our financial expectations. With double incomes the new norm, we think we can afford to have it all RIGHT NOW. The pressure to make a good show

– drive a nice car, live in a beautiful house, go on vacation, wear gorgeous clothes — is heavier than ever. We come to measure our lives with materialistic badges and the old saying,“He with the most toys wins” has become our mantra. People – women in particular – are pulled in all directions. Since historically we have been the caregivers, we have yet to learn how to balance that against our new financial power as major contributors to a household. Sometimes we just let the other guy make the decisions and then seethe with resentment as we watch our partners screw it up. You’d think that with both partners working there’d be more money to save. But often two incomes mean dueling wallets. With different money personalities, different agendas, and a tit-for-tat approach to spending, there’s more debt.

So what can you do if you’re getting into a relationship – or you’re already in one – and you and your mate aren’t money

matches? You can start by talking about it to see how you can create a money match. If that’s never going to happen, then you may want to learn how to protect yourself if your better half is drop-dead determined to leave you worse off. Money Matches #2: Creating Money Matches We can love a body without ever understanding what makes that body tick. Even couples that have been together for eons scratch their heads at some of the things their mates do. That’s because we are evolving creatures constantly responding to the stimuli around us, constantly growing, constantly changing. Well some of us. There are folks who are exactly the same at 45 as they were at 15, but in all likelihood their mates didn’t remain stagnant and so, as a couple, the dynamic has changed. It’s important that each of us know ourselves when it comes to how we think and feel about money. And it’s just as important if we’re planning to share our lives with someone else that we figure out if we’re a money match or a money mismatch. Not feeling the same about money doesn’t mean an automatic no-go. It simply means you know where the other guy is coming from.Yes, people who are less compatible can face more challenges when pairing off. But those who subvert their own money personality to match their mate’s are just asking for trouble. It can’t last. And when your mate finds out you’ve been pretending, it’s going to be a tough pill to swallow. Coming up with a plan for how you’ll manage your money means negotiating a common ground. You start by admitting who you are, how you feel about money, what’s important to you and what isn’t. Then you listen and accept the other guy’s open and frank discussions about what makes him or her tick. Finally, you work together to come up with a plan that keeps you both happy. If you can’t come up with the strength it takes to get through an exercise like this together, then you just shouldn’t even bother hooking up. After all, marriage is work and if you aren’t prepared to work hard, don’t even bother to start. Money means different things to different people. In my book, A Woman of Independent Means, I talk a lot about how TheRentersGuide.ca money can mean abundance or denial, power or autonomy, love or control. Are you a money miser? Are you a spender, an avoider, an acquirer, a depriver or a debtor?

Have you ever sat down and thought about how your attitude to money affects how you experience life? The reality is that it doesn’t seem to matter how much people earn, many of them are not happy with their financial lot. And when two people bring emotional baggage to a relationship – particularly the emotional baggage that surrounds money and that they NEVER talk about, the relationship can turn into a power struggle and life can feel more like strife. One of the easiest places to start the conversation about money is talking about what you’re most comfortable with and what you feel is most risky. Putting on the table the things you need to feel safe is a natural part of the hooking-up process. And talking about the things that make you feel most unsafe is a natural extension. Since many money issues have a comfort/ risk component, it’s easy to move from a general discussion to a money talk. How much money do you have to have in the bank to feel safe? Do you each know what your money set-points are? What kinds of investments do you feel are safe (for you) or risky? How much debt is too much debt? What kind of debt are you willing to take on? How much insurance is enough? When you have children, how will you keep those children safe financially? As you get to know each other, you should be working to clarify each other’s goals. If it’s airy-fairy (I’d like to own a house), nail it down (what kind of house, where, when, how much house?) You also need to talk about your different approaches to planning. For while one of you may be all spontaneity and impulse the other may be a structure freak. Figure out what’s important to yourself and the other guy before you run into a wall.

that pay well, why can’t she just leave him alone now? From my experience working with couples, the following seem to be the things people most often fight about. Feel free to add to the list. If you’re contemplating a commitment to a mate – or you’ve been in a relationship for a while and you feel it’s finally time to address these issues — you might want to talk about these right off the bat: Who will be responsible for keep the account(s) in the black, and how the other person will help. Who will pay the bills, and how the other person will stay in the loop. The similarities and differences in your spending styles, and how you will deal with them. Ditto your approaches to saving. How you will deal with changing/conflicting priorities: moving for one partner’s career, having children, retirement. How you’ll invest, who you’ll invest with, and how you’ll deal with different investment personalities…she’s a safety freak and he likes to take more risk. How much debt you’re each comfortable with, and how you’ll decide whether something is worth going into debt for. How your emotions affect your money management. Some people go shopping when they are sad. Some people go into complete avoidance when faced with an unpleasant financial activity (think paying your taxes). And some people spend to please others. How you will show you are listening to what the other person needs you to hear. This last point is important. If I had a penny for every time I heard,“She won’t stop shopping. She won’t hear me when I say that there’s no money.”Or this one: “My husband has no idea how much it costs to run a family.”These are classical examples of“He/She just won’t listen.”

Money Matches #3: Common Problems Believe it or not, not all the arguments about money stem from not having enough. Sometimes it’s a control issue. Martha always wants to know how much money there is in the bank and so she won’t let Jason have access to the account because she’s afraid he’ll spend money she’s allocated elsewhere.

The key to making any discussion about money work – including addressing the inherent differences in your approaches to money – is to demonstrate that you respect where the other guy is coming from. If there are issues that consistently crop up, then you’ll have to take a deeper look at the attitudes that may be contributing to those issues. But all the way along you need to be supportive and accepting of the person – and deal with the behaviour separately.

Sometimes it’s a difference in goals. Kevin wants to have fun. They’ve got a good pension plan and they have secure jobs

“Buddy, I know you need to have some fun with your friends. But I need to know TheRentersGuide.ca we’re not going to miss the mortgage

TheRentersGuide.ca

41G

TheRentersGuide.ca

finances payment. How much do you think is reasonable for fun money for you every month? Okay, let’s look at the money we have and our expenses (hey! that’s a budget!) and see where we can find that money.” Talking about your money fairly regularly – at least once a month – is one of the biggest contributors to creating successful money matches. With regular communication, things can’t spiral too far out of control before you deal with them. You’d also be smart to look for the telltale signs of money matching while you’re dating. If he seems to blow a lot of money on you, buying flowers, taking you to expensive events, how will you feel when the cost of his wooing comes head-tohead with his credit card balance? If she’s demanding, with expectations that you think you’ll never be able to meet over the long term, why would you choose to rope yourself into an untenable situation? Just because the person you are currently seeing seems like the perfect match doesn’t mean there won’t be issues you have to iron out. If you don’t ask the right questions, you’ll end up headed down the road to marriage without every knowing where the potholes are. Money Matches #4: Protecting Yourself Sometimes people end up in relationships where they are very badly matched when it comes to the money. You’re a saver.Your partner is a spender. You think about the future.Your partner lives for today. You’re conservative.Your partner likes to take risks. If you’re counting on your buddy to do the things you need to keep your financial boat afloat and (s)he doesn’t, you may have to accept that you’re in this ship alone. If you love your mate, that may mean accepting them for who they are and getting on with the business of life. And if you have children, it may mean putting up a protective wall around yourself and your kids to make sure you are safe. I’ve received hundreds of letters from people who are unhappy with their mates’ behaviour when it comes to the money. They feel at risk. They feel out of control. And they are stressed, sad, worried, depressed, and don’t know what to do next.

TheRentersGuide.ca

If you are living with a partner who is irresponsible with money, you have three choices: you can stay, living life on the rollercoaster and hoping for the best, TheRentersGuide.ca you can leave, up-rooting everyone and 42G

bearing the cost of the breakup both financially and emotionally – so you better be dead sure this is the right step, or you can accept that you can’t change your mate, stop your whining, and create a protective wall that isolates your partner’s aberrant behaviour and keeps your family safe. Whether your partner gambles, drinks, does drugs, uses credit like it’s never going to run out, likes to change his/her vehicle every six months, or can’t walk past a store without dropping a bundle, if you’ve begged, pleaded, cried, threatened, and even tried to walk away, maybe it’s time to accept that this is who your partner is. If you can’t live with it, you know what you must do. If you can’t live without it, but don’t want his or her storms to sink your ship, take these steps: Make sure you are not on the hook for any of his borrowing. That means no joint credit (which I disagree with anyway). No cosigning. No sharing of credit cards or bank accounts (keep your cards and your PINs to yourself) especially where overdraft protection may leave you on the hook. If you own a home together, accept that your home may not be around forever. Any joint assets will be at risk since if your partner ends up in bankruptcy, those assets will be part of the proceedings. The only way to avoid this is if your partner’s name is not on title. If it is, paying down your mortgage may be an exercise in frustration since whatever assets you build up may be affected by your partner’s wanton spending and rampant debt. Keep all the important “must-pay” bills in your name. Put all extraneous bills – cable, telephone, sports fees, etc. – in your partner’s name. If your buddy blows at getting the bills paid on time, you don’t want it to affect the really important things or your credit history. Make sure you have a big fat emergency fund. While the general rule of thumb is six months’ worth of essential expenses, if you’re married to a financial moron, you’ll need to have nine months’ to a year’s worth of expenses socked away.Your partner is an emergency waiting to happen. Be prepared. Save/invest separately. Ha! Who are we kidding? Your partner isn’t saving. Just make sure she doesn’t know where the money is or has any access to it. It doesn’t exist as far as she’s concerned. Come up with a plan for the expenses. He has to give you a specific amount every week to meet the family’s needs. If he doesn’t then you’re stuck with a free-loader and should reconsider your options. If he does, that money goes into an account that you use to make sure the essential bills are paid. The other stuff he can pay from his own account.Yup, you’ve got separate accounts!

Keep your hand out of your pocket. This is the toughest thing you’ll have to do.You cannot save your partner. You should not attempt to rescue her when the tears start. It’s part of the condition. You have to grit your teeth and NOT bite the hook. If you fail at this part, you’ll fail altogether! This isn’t about punishing your partner it’s about protecting yourself. And if you have children, they need your protection. Just because one member of your team can’t see beyond his or her own nose doesn’t mean the whole family should suffer. If you’ve got a partner who just doesn’t get it, you’ve got a rough road to walk.
