Smaller households demand smaller homes Canadian households are shrinking according to Statistics Canada data.

Seven decades ago, the average household consisted of 4.3 people; by 2011, the average size had dropped to 2.5 people per household, albeit, there’s plenty more of us to house.

While the majority of Canadian homes over the last century were built to support larger families comprised of two parents with children, nowadays one or two people make up the majority of households, which is why apartment and condominium living – in urban areas in particular – have become increasingly popular.

The impact of smaller families on the Canadian housing market has been significant, spurring a dramatic change in the types of homes and apartments being constructed.

The introduction of urban townhomes, bachelor apartments, studio lofts and condominiums of all shapes and sizes is effectively servicing smaller families and singles who need homes and nearby amenities. While larger homes are still a need for some, the next time you see another crane in the air keep this new demographic dynamic in mind.

CENTRETOWN IS THE HEART of

Ottawa. Located only steps from Parliament Hill and City Hall, It’s bounded on the north by Gloucester St. and Lisgar St., on the east by the Rideau Canal, on the south by Hwy. 417, and on the west by Bronson Ave. Centretown is an interesting mix of young professionals, upper-end Parliament workers, students and retirees. One thing they have in common: they want to live close to everything, and they don’t want to waste any time. Residents enjoy all that Centretown has to offer, from fine dining along Elgin and Bank streets, to shows at the NAC.

Residents can walk everywhere.

The sidewalks are always lined with pedestrians and the bikes hustle around the city with ease in the blockaded bike lanes.

This neighbourhood offers and eclectic mix of residents, but because of the busy streets and constant flow of people, it’s not a popular area for young families. Most residents are Hill workers or university students.

There is no lack of transportation options in Centretown. Bike, walk, drive or ride the bus. Almost all bus routes travel through Centretown, so you won’t have to wait long to get where you want to go, especially

during rush hour. There is also quick and easy access to Hwy. 417 and the Greyhound bus station is located on Catherine St. There is a wide array of shops, restaurants, cafes, bars and all other kinds of entertainment. Places are often crowded, which means reservations would be wise. Residents in the area battle for seats at the local pubs with the civil servants who work next door and the tourists visiting Parliament Hill.

THE RIGHT MATCH: Roommate compatibility testing

IF YOU’RE SHARING A space with someone else, unless you’re both on completely different schedules, they’re going to become a pretty big part of your life. Girlfriends and boyfriends come and go, but especially in a big city, roommates can be with each other for years – even decades if the lease is good enough. If you’ve been “set up” by friends, it’s easy to find out about the other person’s habits and foibles before you let them sign the lease. But how can you ensure that cool-seeming stranger who answered your ad won’t become your new worst enemy once the lease is signed?

I just happen to be a professional matchmaker, and the similarities that run between a love match and a roomie match are astounding, so I’m going to offer my professional matchmaking advice on finding that perfect roommate. These five topics can guide your roommate compatability testing – and are ideal to cover before you go making any yearlong commitments.

1. Are you lark, or an owl? If you’ve barely hit the sack at 3am after a Walking Dead marathon and your

roomie rises at 4:45am for an early morning run, it’s never going to work unless you’ve got an extremely soundproof kitchen and bathroom.

Better to find someone who keeps similar hours.

2. How do you play the social game?

How’s your social life? A single introvert may not pair up very well with somebody who hosts a party every month and has friends “drop by” at random. Make sure you ask before the first spontaneous afterwork session occurs in your living room.

3. Where aer your boundaries? Can I borrow your boots? Do you mind if I use some of this soy sauce? Some people are extremely comfortable with sharing not only a space, but also the items within it. I once had a roommate who – after I’d told her she could wear a particular skirt – took to dressing herself daily from my wardrobe, never bothering to ask permission. Boundaries around everything from the food in the kitchen to the contents of your closet need to be clearly delineated.

4. Who’s a bathroom hog? How much longer will you be in there?

When two people share a lone bathroom, shower length, makeup application time and the duration of your depilation sessions all become a matter of some urgency. Talk to your potential cohabitant about their personal habits, especially if you both leave for work around the same time.

5. Housekeeping expectations?

When was the last time you cleaned your bathtub? If your answer is “this morning, right after my shower,” and your prospective roommate responds incredulously, “you clean your bathtub?” it’s not a match.

Be upfront about housekeeping standards, or one of you might end up feeling like the other one’s mom.

Avoid common

packing mistakes

HERE A RE A FEW TIPS TO HELP you avoid finding damaged items at your destination: 1. CONSIDER PURCHASING BOXES FROM YOUR MOVER. The most common packing mistake we see is people getting free boxes at the grocery or liquor store and then putting too much weight in them. For example, using a large box to pack books and magazines may make it too heavy to lift, and the box might break during the move due to the weight.

Use this rule of thumb: the heavier the item, the smaller the box. Be choosy about your boxes; free boxes from a grocery store that have been used to ship produce could contain insect larvae that may transfer to your belongings.

2. BE REALISTIC ABOUT THE NUMBER OF BOXES YOU NEED. Depending on how long you have lived in your current location, you will most likely underestimate your boxes requirement.

Often, we hear of people who think 50 or 60 boxes will be enough, and then realize they need 250, two days before moving day.

3. START PACKING EARLY AND BE COMPLETELY PACKED WHEN THE MOVERS ARRIVE. Sometimes we arrive at a customer’s home and they’re not packed. There’s nothing more frustrating than trying to move a customer’s belongings while they are attempting to shove items into boxes and we get in each others’ way.

This also interferes with the optimal loading of the moving truck. We have a loading system where the first things we place in the truck are light items such as chairs, lampshades, cushions, etc; we place these items in the ‘attic’ (the area over the cab) of the truck. We can get lots of light items up there and they stay secure.

Next, we create a ‘box wall’ stacked to the ceiling to hold the items in the attic in place. We then stand plastic wrapped mattresses against the box wall and secure everything with tie-off straps

to keep belongings from getting jostled during the move. If you’re not completely packed and ready on moving day, we can’t create that box wall early on and, this decreases the capacity of the items that can be moved at one time. It also eats up precious time and, therefore, money!

4. THINK AHEAD. Begin packing items you don’t use daily. As you pack your boxes move them to the front of your apartment and stack them along a wall near the front door. Say it takes 2.5 minutes, on average, to move a box from an upper bedroom to the truck. Having it on the main floor can shave 45 seconds off the time for each box.

Saving 45 seconds multiplied by 200 boxes can save lots of time and money.

5. CONSIDER HAVING YOUR MOVING COMPANY PACK FOR YOU. We are skilled, have more experience and have standard-size small, medium and large boxes that are designed to fit into our trucks to create a perfect box wall for optimum efficiency and safety.

So, when it comes to moving, forethought goes a long way. Because your belongings mean a lot to you, take extra care when packing so that they arrive at your destination safely.

If you don’t understand these five things, you’re not a renter and you can’t sit with us: IKEA FURNITURE STUGGLES When it came time for me to furnish my first apartment – which was actually just the bedroom – I was concerned about how I would get my IKEA furniture from the store to my new place without the option to call daddy. Then I realized the hard part was actually putting the furniture together. Who knew putting together a bed frame could actually take an entire day. Then once you think it’s over, you end up with one leftover piece!

KNOWING YOUR NEIGHBOUR TOO WELL I’m all for befriending your neighbours, but there’s something about living in the same building that can make you and your neighbours a little too close for comfort. LANDLORD PROBLEMS Every renter can also swap atleast one good landlord story. Whether it’s that time you accidently locked yourself out of your home or that week your landlord was on vacation and the building’s entire water supply was cut off.

Fortunately, a fellow renter can always top your story no matter how bad you think it was and make you feel better.

A person’s holiday wish list is often related to their life stage.

When looking for the perfect gift for someone, it’s wise to consider whether they’re a renter, young professional, raising a family or an empty nester. To make holiday shopping a little easier, here’s a list of the top gifts to give for different life stages.

1. The Student Most students are renters and if you’re in need of a gift for someone who is renting, you’ll want to consider giving them items that will, at the very least, make them feel more at home.

DO IT YOURSELF, EVERYTHING Shopping with a fellow renter doesn’t result in much purchasing. You both admire home items and then laugh at the outrouges price tag together. You’re a DIY professional and when people compliment your home decor you proudly proclaim “I did it myself.” No one understands your love for Pinterest quiet as much as a renter does.

IT’S A LIFESTYLE THING But then there’s also all the perks of being a renter that you love to brag about.

The city lifestyle your rental gives you and the fact that the best pizza in town delivers straight to your door. The small closet space really doesn’t bother you and your neighbour has actually always had your back. Let’s not forget those amenities. Is the pool party at your place or my place this weekend?

2. The Young Professional Young professionals have left the nest for good, enjoying their steady income and getting used to that 9-5 regimen. Try giving them gifts that will allow them to make their mark on their new home. Here are two items to add to your shopping list if you’re buying for a young professional.
