In your mind, that new apartment is already yours – right location, right size – right price! But don’t glance over the most important part - signing the lease.

Don’t just look it over, read it. It’s a contract and you’re legally obligated to uphold all of the clauses in that agreement (barring anything illegal).

Whatever is in the lease is what will come into play while you live in your new apartment. Is the rent amount correct? Does it include everything you thought it did – like utilities? Make sure that’s in there, in writing. There’s an old bit of legalese to live by: If it isn’t in

writing, it never happened.

Are there any weird stipulations that make you uneasy? Are there any stipulations you won’t adhere to?

While many things, like smoking bans or tenants insurance, aren’t mandated by law, if they’re included in the lease, they’re binding. Make sure you can live with what you sign, because those will be the rules you’ll live by for the duration of your lease. And make sure you get a signed copy of the lease.
