hether you’re relocating from one coast to the other or moving to your first place out of parents home, changing homes can be hectic, exciting and certainly stressful. But, relax.

You can eliminate all the anxiety sometimes associated with moving by taking control of the situation with confidence. If you decide to move yourself, book a moving truck well in advance from a reliable company that can help you give you tips on moving as well as advice regarding the size of vehicle you will need. If you decide to go with a pro, ask your friends and family for a recommendation of mover. Call at least three companies to ask about their services and then decide. Professional movers can do everything for you if you wish, from packing and unpacking, to disconnecting appliances and electronics, but of course there’s extra cost involved. Make sure you understand the terms of your agreement no matter what you decide as well any other additional costs, such as insurance and mileage costs so you can budget accordingly.

t’s that time – off to school. Whether you’re the student or it’s your kids, school puts a demand on your home. You may want to give some thought to how to set up some space in your home to accommodate homework.

For a while – especially during the 90s and early 2000s, it was absolutely necessary to find a spot for a computer. It was a decor nightmare! That big desktop monitor and high tech tower needed to be plugged into the modem. That required a station. But apartment buildings weren’t built with a computer nook in mind, it often required some inconvenient placement. A computer desk with upper shelving that always seemed in the wrong spot. A machine on the dining table taking up its own space. A desk in a bedroom, requiring one resident to endure having the rest of the family constantly barging in, vying for screen time. Now with laptops, tablets and smartphones attached to wireless modems, the cords have been cut. Anyone can work anywhere. But that printer and supplies still need a place to be plugged in and accessible. Back to school is actually a great time to get organized if you aren’t already – even if there’s no student in your home. All of the back-to-school gear is on sale and readily available. Vignettes in stores show you how to arrange all of the stuff stylishly. You don’t need a home office, but with a printer, modem, maybe a photocard reader, a scanner – plus supplies like printer paper, ink, pens and the rest, creating a proper home for everything is necessary. Because your mobile, you don’t necessarily need to work where your supplies are. Many people create a little station in a night table, book shelf or closet – out of sight but easily accessed when needed. That way, each student can work in their own room or at the table (or sprawled out on the den floor like I used to do) undisturbed, and everyone can access the station for printing, scanning etc. When not studying, use your computer to visit RentersGuide.ca and start looking for the perfect new place. THE START OF A NEW SCHOOL YEAR IS FAST APPROACHING AND CSA GROUP, a leading standards development organization, and global provider of testing and certification services, has some important advice for college and university students heading out on their own. When leaving for university you often want to bring the conveniences of home with you. Your apartment will be equipped with the necessities – fridge, stove, maybe even a microwave and dishwasher. If you’re sharing your rental with a roommate – or a lot of roommates – you may feel like creating your own little private dining in your bedroom with a hotplate, a microwave or a mini-fridge. But your room may not be designed for the mini-kitchen you want. It’s important to check with your landlord to see what the rules are when it comes to electrical appliances, before you arrive. Often there are limitations in your lease, as it can create a safety or fire hazard. Remember that helping to ensure the safety of any electrical items you do bring could save your life. “Leaving home for your own place is an exciting time for students,” says Allison Hawkins, Manager, Corporate Affairs.“We want everyone to have a fun at college and university, so CSA Group has offered a few suggestions to help make sure that new-found freedom includes safety.” CSA GROUP OFFERS THE FOLLOWING TIPS FOR YOUR NEW HOME AWAY FROM HOME: Check with your landlord before you bring appliances: Some apartments don’t allow cooking devices or appliances to be used in your bedroom. Check the rules to make sure the items you plan to have in your room are permitted. Seek out a recognized name and certification mark: When a product doesn’t include a brand identifier or trademark, it may be a counterfeit which can lead to serious safety issues. Brand-name companies want you to know whose product you’re buying. Look for a certification mark on your electronics, to help ensure they’ve met applicable performance and safety standards. Make sure you have a working smoke detector and carbon monoxide alarm: Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless, lethal gas and a carbon monoxide detector could save your life. Make sure you have a working carbon monoxide alarm and smoke detector installed in your room. Check for a certification mark to help ensure it’s been tested to the applicable standards for safety and performance. Don’t leave items unattended while in use and keep flammable materials away from cooking and heating devices.

Don’t overload electrical cords or outlets: When you’re short on outlets, it may be tempting to have your laptop, gaming system, sound system and microwave all plugged into one cord, but that can overload the circuit and potentially cause a fire. Make sure the extension cord is heavy enough for the intended load. If a cord or plug becomes hot when it is plugged in, it may be overloaded. Semi-permanent installations should not use extension cords. Moving can be fun &

KID FRIENDLY BY CHUCK RESNICK

MOVING CAN BE STRESSFUL FOR CHILDREN. THE CHANGE CAN BE OVERWHELMING, but there are ways to make it easier on them. It’s important to inform your kids about the family’s plans to move as soon as you can. The more time they have to prepare, the easier it will be for them, say child psychologists who suggest that children should participate in the decision-making. If kids feel included and take ownership of their new-home decision, the transition will go much easier. Moving is a family process so share the excitement and responsibilities with every member of the family. Give everyone an age-appropriate responsibility. Kids will enjoy decorating their moving boxes. And when you are in your new home, it will be easier for them to find their stuff. Throughout the move, stay as upbeat and calm as possible. Give your children a chance to express their feelings and try to be honest about your own feelings. Most children will feel some anger, sadness or may worry about the move. Reassure them they aren’t alone and it’s OK to have these feelings. Involve your kids in the packing process and start packing items you will not need ahead of time. Sentimental items your children treasure such as special blankets, beloved stuffed animals and photo albums should be kept in a separate bag or box which they can keep close until moving day, and then bring with them to your new home. Plan a date to tour your new neighbourhood RentersGuide.ca with your family. If it’s not a long distance, why not ride your bikes and scope out your children’s favourite activities and even fast food locations, new neighbourhood tennis courts, soccer clubs, baseball associations.

Check with the local school PTA to determine if there is a Welcome Wagon program, arrange a tour of their new school and meet the teachers ahead of moving day. Make sure children say goodbye to the important people in their lives. Help them prepare a list of phone numbers, emails and addresses of important people in their lives. Prepare cards that have their name and new address on them to hand out to friends. If you are moving within the same city, try to schedule a few play dates with their friends before your move day. Give your kids an inexpensive digital camera to take as many pictures as possible of their friends prior to moving day. This way, they’ll have a reason to stay in touch as they share the photos. Keep them involved with the sports teams they were associated with until the end of the season, so they can maintain their friendships while they make new friends in their new neighbourhood. Child psychology experts agree that if kids know they can stay in touch with friends and loved ones, it will make the move less traumatic.
