The right move I’ve never met anyone that has said to me “I love moving!” but I’ve heard many, many people say “I’m so glad I moved, it’s made a huge difference to my life.” When you need to move, it’s best just to do it, do it right, and start enjoying the rewards that your new home brings to your life. Living in the wrong space is a huge hamper on your lifestyle. Sometimes it’s hard to recognize. Sometimes it’s hard to accept. There may be things that you love about your current space, but ultimately, when you realize that your current space no longer accommodates your needs, it’s time to move. Most people settle into an apartment and try to make it work, even after it becomes clear that it’s no longer an ideal arrangement. SANDY HILL, one of Ottawa’s oldest
suburbs, is bordered by the Rideau Canal and the Rideau River, with Rideau Street and the Byward Market area to the north, and Hwy 417 to the south. This expansive neighbourhood is best known for its proximity to the University of Ottawa as well as its many steep hills – which make walking around this neighbourhood a workout! Sandy Hill is a neighbourhood where you will quickly begin to recognize faces, where neighbours watch out for one another, and where people are found to bike or walk most of the time.
This area was once one of the most affluent neighbourhoods in Ottawa, and still boasts expansive mansions, but now they’re primarily home to university students. The further you get from campus, the more common it is to find more young families, older couples, and large embassies. Shops and restaurants are aimed at students needs. Coffee here is cheap, and not surprisingly, the beer is even cheaper! Affluent residents won’t be found biting into a burger at the local Royal Oak. Highway 417 is within blocks offering quick and easy access to the rest of the city. There is a bus
route that travels throughout the neighbourhood. You can hop on at one end of Sandy Hill, take the bus up the large hill on Somerset St., and then hop off at the top. Perfect for all us lazy folks too sleepy in the morning to climb that hill! This area is full of mature trees, steps from the Rideau Canal and the Rideau River, and the homes are historic, the streets quaint. What more could you ask for?

Small-space survival guide By Lydia McNutt
IT’S TRUE WHAT THEY SAY, good things really do come in small packages. Here’s another adage apartment dwellers should pay attention to: it’s not the size that matters, but how you use it. To make the most of your small space, all you need is a tape measure, an open mind, and these five small-space survival tips:
1. First impressions count When you walk into your apartment, what’s the first thing you see? Is it pleasing? Inviting? Does it reflect what you want your home to say about you? You only have one chance to make a first impression, so make it count! 2. Pleasing proportions For furniture to serve the double duty of fashion and function – a smallspace essential – it must be well proportioned to the space. Rule of thumb: The smaller the room, the smaller the furnishings. This also applies to artwork and accessories. 3. Leave the traffic jam for the road Especially in a compact apartment, but applicable to any-sized space, it’s important to keep high-traffic areas clear of furniture, for functional reasons as well as aesthetic ones. Tip: Ensure you can open doors without bumping into anything. 4. Focus! Plan your room around one main focal point. Emphasize your favourite feature by arranging your furniture to complement and highlight it. It could be an impressive view, a cosy fireplace or a great piece of art. 5. Measure twice, buy once Last but not least, here’s one more saying that’s worth repeating: Measure twice, cut once. Before buying any piece of furniture, make sure the door opening will accommodate its size. Don’t forget to take your tape measure into the elevator, stairwell and corridors too.

Canadians move every year, and of that, 14 per cent opt to move in June. “Of that 14 per cent, a whopping one-third will choose June 30th as their moving day,” said Chuck Resnick, vice-president of Marketing and Operations, Two Men and A Truck - Canada. “That boils down to roughly 199,000 individuals and families who will be on the hunt for boxes, packing materials, and most likely, help with their move,” he added. “There are many reasons why June 30th is so popular,” says Resnick. “It’s the end of the school year so it works well for parents who prefer not to disrupt their children’s schooling and to assure they get settled prior to beginning in their new school year come September. Many families also want to get settled into their new homes before the summer gets underway, to get the most out of their backyards and balconies. The Canada Day holiday also gives people an extra day to unpack and wind down, while the weather is consistently pleasant,” he said. To make sure moving day goes smoothly, Resnick recommends planning in advance. “Make arrangements for small children and pets to be looked after so they’re not underfoot. Pack a ‘day of the move’ box with essentials so you’re not scrambling for 32
