Doing errands such as grocery shopping and banking on foot not only offers many health benefits, it gives you a chance to meet new neighbours and discover new places too. Don’t let the cost of rent solely dictate your choice of location. Make a list of your priorities first, and then take the time to assess each location for its merits and weight your options.

haven’t moved in about five years now, but my husband and I have both moved numerous times. We’ve both experienced moving from one province to another. We both had our fair share of room mates. We both lived in our own apartments before we met. When the time came to move in together 10 years ago, we faced that big dillemma: whose apartment? It was actually an easy decision. I loved his building, but we decided to move into a new apartment within the building so that it would be “Our First Place.” Looking back, it was the right move for us. We’ve moved twice since Our First Place – once to accommodate our growing family, and the second when we realized we needed to choose a family-friendly community to raise our kids. Our preferred community was the right fit while we were young socialites, but we wanted to trade the nightlife and stylish boutiques for playgrounds, daycare and a good school. Needs change, people change and, luckily, apartments change. Real estate can be a tricky thing and it’s hard to focus on our personal needs. We were happy to rent apartments because we knew there would be change. We weren’t ready to invest in real estate and, had we bought and sold those many times leading up to our current home, we would have gone through serious expense and not enjoyed the benefit of selection that we had in our various apartments. Moving can be one of the most stressful events in life, so why should that be any different for your dog?

HERE ARE 10 TIPS ON HOW TO PREPARE YOUR DOG:

Under no circumstances should you place your dog in the back of a moving truck. Even safely tucked in a well-ventilated pet travel carrier, the truck is almost always hot (even in winter) and of course, the doors are closed.

Your dog will most likely want to play with the movers and probably everyone else, so take him/her to a kennel, dog spa or have a friend or relative dogsit at their home, before the movers arrive. Those will be the best places for your furry friend; then you can devote your total attention to your moving activities.

If your dog must be with you during your move, keep your loved one outside or out of the movers’ way. Dogs crave the attention of strangers and can create obstacles which will impede the move.

Have dog treats on hand for move day to keep your dog quiet. It’s also good way to get your dog to listen and obey. And, it’s a great idea to have water and nutritious human treats for your movers as well. Pack a separate box of your dog’s favourite toys. Once at your new home, your dog may be frightened of the new surroundings, so, having familiar playthings ready will reduce stress levels. Don’t forget that your dog will be excited on move day and will need plenty of water. Exercise is the best way to get your dog ready, more relaxed and calm for when the movers arrive. Depending on your dog’s age and size, draining your dog’s energy level may not be easy, so plan frequent walks. I know that a 30-minute walk barely makes a dent in our dog’s energy level.

Make sure you let your pet out for “mess” breaks. Nothing will ruin your moving day experience more TheRentersGuide.ca than a ‘surprise’ from your dog inside your new abode. Remember to clean up after your dog to avoid making a bad first impression on your neighbours.

If your dog will be around during the move, let your movers know ahead of time. You’d be surprised how many men are afraid of dogs. Whether large or small animals, it doesn’t matter. Also, there are movers that are allergic to dogs.

After the move you will be busy unpacking, so don’t ignore your dog. Take regular and long walks, if you can, to explore your new neighbourhood together or even short breaks from unpacking, to play. Time together will help your dog be better behaved during this change in everyone’s environment.

Have fun – moving into new digs is a time to celebrate. Have the movers take a picture…you, your family and your dog in your new home. What a perfect reminder of the day you just shared.

WHEN THE FEDERATION OF RENTAL-HOUSING PROVIDERS OF ONTARIO (FRPO) CREATED THE CERTIFIED RENTAL BUILDING PROGRAM (CRBP) to improve the quality of life of apartment dwellers and staff in the province, we knew that accountability was a key factor in the program’s effectiveness for everyone involved. To ensure objectivity and reporting of the finest quality, we enlisted J.D. Power and Associates to conduct all the building audits for participating firms. Established in 1968, that well-respected third-party independent performance measurement firm conducts unbiased surveys of customer satisfaction, product quality and buyer behaviour in a number of major industries. The Building Audit component of the CRBP helps to ensure that the property managers and owners of certified buildings are conducting their dayto-day business with good practices and processes in place.
