AMY HANCOCK The land east of downtown, Highlands, stretches from Ada Boulevard along the river bank to 118th Ave. between 50th and 67th streets. Magnificent homes, generous lots, and breathtaking views appealed to everyone when Highlands was first developed in 1910, though only the privileged could afford them. The passage of time made this neighbourhood affordable for people from all areas of life. Many homes along or near Ada Boulevard are extravagant, though areas near
118th Ave. have a less refined reputation. Dubbed “The Avenue,” 112th Avenue is a hub of activity, home to restaurants, cafes, boutiques and street festivals Highlands is a tight community. Residents enjoy spending time together and looking out for one another. Middle-aged married couples with children at home or grown, make up much of the population, although there is a healthy mix of young professionals and seniors. Wayne Gretzky Drive runs past Highlands, offering commuters southbound passage to other parts of the city or the Yellowhead freeway in the north. City buses go through Highlands, offering direct routes to north Edmonton

Highlands’ proximity to downtown Edmonton provides quick access to most amenities and business services. There are several schools in and near Highlands for students from kindergarten to Grade 12, as well as the Concordia University College of Alberta. Recreational facilities, churches and a branch of the Edmonton Public Library are all in the neighbourhood. Amy is a freelance writer and communications professional. ADVICE | QUICK TIPS
GO VERTICAL OR GO HOME USE THE WALL TO STORE IT ALL ADJUST YOUR STORAGE SYSTEMS. A common
misconception is that once you have organized your entire home, you’re done. However, organizing is a process, not a destination. As your interests change, so will your organizing systems. Put some time aside to tweak existing systems on a regular basis – especially when you experience a lifestyle change.
HELLEN BUTTIGIEG Clearing clutter and putting everything away can be a challenge when you don’t have enough storage space. You’ve got to be creative in finding new places to store things, because closets and furniture will only get you so far. Take advantage of your apartment’s height. Use the wall to store it all, and make a statement with decorative shelving and storage possibilities.
AVOID SHAMPOO OVERLOAD IN THE BATH. For a more streamlined
look in your bath or shower, consider attaching wall-mounted soap and shampoo dispensers. This will eliminate the sticky mess of shampoos, soaps and lotions crowding the bath or shower, contributing to a more serene, spa-like space.
GO VERTICAL OR GO HOME.
When you’ve run out of storage space, lie on the floor and look up. There is a limited amount of horizontal space (countertops, desks, tables and the floor) but vertical space is abundant and often overlooked. Consider putting shelves above door frames or around the perimeter of the room, like a border. Hang things from the ceiling in the kitchen. When purchasing armoires, bookcases or shelving units, choose the tallest you can find and put baskets on top of them.
RUNNING OUT OF KITCHEN-
STORE MAGAZINES CREATIVELY.
CABINET SPACE? If your kitchen
When looking for interesting ways to store magazines, think outside the box. As a creative alternative to a magazine stand, consider using a ladder. Propped up against a wall, a ladder is an interesting way to display magazines and make use of otherwise wasted vertical space.
supplies exceed your cabinet space, consider mounting a metal rail to your wall. Use hooks (usually included with a rail) to hang everything from utensils to hand towels. This attractive storage solution gives you easy access to your items and utilizes previously unused wall space. MAKE THE MOST OF CEILING

FIVE TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL SMALL-SPACE PLANNING
LYDIA MCNUTT That’s not to say the task is without its challenges. You may find yourself pinching pennies, or making the most of those hand-me-down “oldies but goodies” and garage-sale bargains. Regardless of what you use to fill your space, you can turn that room into your favourite retreat. The secret is in the planning. Furniture manufacturer Decor-Rest offers some tricks of the trade for decorating with confidence and transforming your rental into a real home. FIRST IMPRESSIONS COUNT
“
What’s the first thing you see when you enter a room? Is it pleasing? Inviting? Does it reflect what you want the room to say? Decor-Rest suggests arranging your furniture “so the entrance into the room is welcoming and establishes a comfortable flow of traffic. Avoid blocking the main entrance to a room with a large furniture item. You only have one chance to make an impression, so make it count.” PLEASING PROPORTIONS
For furniture to serve its function, it must be well proportioned to the room. The rule of thumb is this: “The smaller the room, the smaller the furniture pieces,” according to Decor-Rest. “Whether the room is large or small, do not overcrowd the space with too much furniture.” This rule also applies to artwork and accessories. 10 RentersGuide.ca
The keys to your new home are in hand, now comes the fun part – decorating.
”
LEAVE THE TRAFFIC JAM FOR THE ROAD
“Avoid dodging around furniture.” Keep high-traffic areas clear of furniture. Likewise, ensure you can open doors without bumping them into your brand new coffee table.
work around? If you’re uncertain about where to start, you can begin by selecting your carpet – it can be the inspiration for the rest of the colour scheme and theme.” MEASURE TWICE, BUY ONCE
Have you ever bought a couch and brought it home, only to realize it doesn’t fit through the door? The old “measure twice, cut once” adage will save you frustration, time and money. “Always make sure the door size will accommodate the largest furniture piece.” Don’t forget to take your tape measure into the stairwell and corridors, too.
FOCUS!
Plan your room around a focal point. Emphasize your favourite feature by arranging your furniture around it. Decor-Rest suggests you examine your space first to determine its architectural assets. “Does it have a great view or a cosy fireplace you may want to

DISCOVER DOWNTOWN EDMONTON IN ONE DAY by JANA LEE
Get unique souvenirs at 124 Street local boutiques After lunch, shop at local boutiques for unique gifts. Whether you’re looking for beautifully modern clothing and accessories, vintage threads or new-age-inspired gifts, this area’s got it all. We recommend visiting Floc Boutique, Lux Beauty Boutique, Shades of Grey, Ascendant Books, Red Ribbon Gifts and Vespucci Consignment.
MORNING Breakfast at a cute café Start your morning with breakfast at Café Linnea. Its rotating menu reflects what’s in season and it prides itself on serving highquality, locally sourced food. Note: It is a no-tipping establishment, as the cafe bases its pricing on offering locally sourced ingredients of the highest quality. Take in old and new sights with a walk Post-brekkie, take a walking tour of downtown Edmonton. Start at the Alberta Legislature for a guided tour of the Legislative Assembly, followed by a stroll down Jasper Avenue. If you’re feeling motivated, head towards the Louise McKinney 12

Riverfront Park next to the Shaw Conference Centre for a picturesque view of Edmonton’s river valley. Stop at the Chinese Garden Gazebo for a picture and a well-deserved rest. AFTERNOON Lunch in one of Edmonton’s fastest growing areas Now that you’ve digested your breakfast during a walking tour of downtown, head over to Edmonton’s trendy 124 Street area and into Duchess Bake Shop to lunch on sandwiches, soups and quiche. But let’s be real – the main reason you visit this patisserie is for its award-winning baked goods. Wash down your croissants or macaron with a delicious espresso.
Downtown Edmonton has many great restaurants. Stay on 124 Street and check out fine dining at Solstice Seasonal Cuisine. If you’re looking for casual pub food, consider Daravara. Or head back towards the downtown core and stop at Tzin for upscale tapas paired with excellent wines, The Common for a contemporary gastro-lounge experience, The Marc for fine French cuisine or the Pampa Brazilian Steakhouse for a rodizio (all-you-can-eat) style meal. Post dinner stroll and drinks on 4th Street Promenade For post-dinner activities, consider the 4th Street Promenade at the 104 Street area. Whether you’re itching to move or ready to sit down for a drink, establishments like Mercer Tavern and Kelly’s Pub can serve your after-dinner needs. From YP.ca. MESH AROUND You can see right through this trend. Mesh, a great design accent adding style, creating dimension and texture. It’s a hot design element in decor. The luminous effect is dazzling when used in light fixtures and the tactile effect is alluring when used in metal furnishings and finishes.
