he first time I moved, I had no idea what I was doing. My first place was a great little junior one-bedroom. It didn’t need much furniture – just a futon sofa, two little side tables/coffee tables a kitchen table, some stools for the kitchen island and a little black-and-white TV. I thought I’d just drive my stuff over in loads and have a friend help with the big stuff. I had no idea how many loads it would take for all the pots and pans, dishes, toiletries, pictures, knick-knacks, books, cat supplies... Just my clothes and shoes ended up being a carload on its own. It was in a trendy area, above a store, on a main street. On three separate occasions I ended up getting parking tickets because I couldn’t park in front of my apartment in rush hour. Oops.

My second move I rented a van. It took forever. I wasn’t very good at packing a van, and because I underestimated how much stuff I had, I needed to make two trips. I ended up paying a surcharge for keeping the van late, but I did manage to avoid getting parking tickets.

My third move I rented a truck. I had lots of friends help. No tickets, no surcharge, but the food and beverage bill for the helping hands added up.

By my last move I got smart – I hired a moving company.

Moving day is never easy. The organization and preparation it takes to have a move go smoothly takes some effort. It’s one of those things that gets easier with experience – but is never easy. Consumer handbook to become a savvy consumer

With so many people trying to sell us things these days, it’s hard to separate fact from fiction.

One of the best ways to protect yourself is to consult objective, unbiased sources of information. The Canadian Consumer Handbook, for example, is a trusted resource for factual and impartial information.

Here are some of the most popular topics in the handbook and what they deal with: Debt – Deals with the warning signs of debt, taking control of your finances, making a budget, negotiating with collection agencies, credit ratings and reports, the pros and cons of credit counsellors and your rights and responsibilities in filing for bankruptcy.

Credit reporting – Describes what a credit rating is, how to order a copy of your personal credit report, how to protect yourself from companies promising to improve your credit rating, and how you can increase your credit score over time.

Contracts – Deals with little-known facts about contracts. online and smartphone fraud W

ith the increasing popularity of smartphones and social media sites, fraudsters are developing new ways to steal or trick consumers into revealing personal information through online channels.

Justin Hwang, associate vice president, Fraud Management, TD Canada Trust, offers his top tips on how Canadians can protect themselves from these emerging scams: • Don’t give away too much on social media sites: Scammers use social media sites to search for personal details of their potential victims. They use this information to decipher passwords and answers to financial institutions’ security questions. Too often people use easy passwords such as their mother’s maiden name, pet’s name or birthday and this information may be readily available online.

• Watch out for malicious apps: Apps designed to steal your personal information do exist.

Do your research; make sure anything you download is from a legitimate company or developer. How to keep the

kitchen safe T he kitchen is a great place for family members to come together. Cooking is a great way to involve the entire family in an activity while still getting dinner on the table. While this time can be a great way to bond, it can also be dangerous if food isn’t handled properly.

Keep things separate: A combination of protein and vegetables is great for any meal, but keeping things separate is important for food safety. Designate a separate cutting board for meat and one for vegetables.

Types of TenanTs’ Insurance you can buy – and what they cover

andlords have relatively few legal obligations to compensate tenants for damage to – or loss of – their personal possessions. Tenants, on the other hand, are responsible for the harm they may cause to any part of the building in which they live or to others who live or visit there.

| coverages | Each insurance company packages tenants’ insurance policies differently, or calls the products by different names, but they all (should) include two kinds of coverage – Basic Liability coverage and Contents coverage.

Basic Liability coverage protects you if you or your guests cause damage to the building – whether it be your unit or the whole building. This coverage is comparable to the liability coverage in a typical homeowners’ policy.

Contents coverage replaces your belongings if they are lost or damaged. You may think you have little of value, but you would be very surprised how much it would cost you to replace everything – all at once. You should insure for an amount representing the new replacement cost of all your belongings. Coverage is on a named perils or an all risk basis. Named perils means your insurance covers only those perils, such as fire and theft, that are specifically named in the insurance policy. All risk means your insurance covers loss or damage resulting from numerous miscellaneous causes.

M

y mom used to make nanaimo Squares when I was a child. She made other desserts too, but her nanaimo Squares were the absolute best.

‘Sweet’ doesn’t even begin to describe these delectable little wonders. They start with a crumb base, followed by a layer of light custard buttercream, topped with a smooth glossy layer of semi sweet chocolate. Best of all, you don’t have to bake them.

MoM’s nanaiMo squares ingreDients MIddle layeR

› ½ cup unsalted butter › 3½ tbsp vanilla custard powder › 3 tbsp milk › 2 cups icing sugar ICIng layeR

› 4 squares semi-sweet chocolate (1 oz. each) › 1 tbsp unsalted butter

Directions › Cream butter and sugar together, then add beaten egg and mix (or if you don’t like to use raw egg — melt first 3 ingredients in top of double boiler, then add the raw egg, stirring to cook and thicken, then remove from heat). › Continue by stirring in crumbs, coconut, and nuts.

Press firmly into an ungreased 9” x 9” pan. My Mom uses a glass pyrex dish, which I think works better. › Melt chocolate and butter over low heat. Cool.

Once cool, but still liquid, pour over second layer spreading evenly. › Refrigerate until firm. Cut into squares, serve and enjoy.

Number the boxes and keep a list of which boxes go in which room in your new home.

Label boxes containing fragile items with large red lettering.

Place china in plastic bags and stack plates upright on their sides, not flat.

Pack your TV, stereo and computer in their original boxes whenever possible.

Keep boxes to 50 pounds or less.

Pack heavy items into their own smaller boxes and place lighter items together into larger boxes. (Hint: Don’t pack all your books into one box!)

When decorating small spaces, you don’t necessarily have to go with pint-sized furniture. Just pare down the number of pieces.

Make sure there’s balance and create interest by drawing the eye to varying levels throughout the space. Multi-purpose pieces go a long way.

One of the quickest ways to change the look of a rental, aside from paint, is to change the lighting. Invest in new light fixtures and take them with you when you leave.

❖

When decorating on a budget, try to look at old items in a new way. A desk can become a buffet table, and who knows ,maybe an old door would make a great headboard!

❖

Never underestimate the power of a coat of paint! Paint a tree stump in a bold hue to create a cool side table or stool.

❖

Walk through a second-hand store with a mind to breathe new life into an old piece of furniture; try using two tones of your favourite colour.

❖

To create a gallery wall you have to start with a commitment; your frames should either match, but vary in size or they can be mismatched but uniform in size.

Oh, and make a choice; black and white or colour for the entire collection.

❖

Collections are a starting point for your accent pieces and carry themes on in other ways. If you collect bird figurines, find a ‘birdie’ pillow to complete the look.

We improved a kitchen for a budding chef by capping inexpensive bookshelves with a slab of granite we found in the sale section at one of our suppliers.

Here are a few ways to get your family budget on track: Recurring expenses. Track your monthly spending on your home, food, transportation, utilities and loans. Consider giving to charity on a regular basis too.

Occasional expenses. Birthday gifts, entertainment, dining out, school trips and clothing can quickly add up. Ensure you watch these expenses closely.

Emergencies. Build up some savings in an emergency fund.

A rule of thumb is three months of your income.

Save for the future. Put some money aside for a new home, car or family vacation. Remember to contribute to an RRSP and RESP. Paying off debt should be a priority too.
