Being reasonable I ONCE HAD A NEIGHBOUR STORM into my apartment, screaming. He wanted the music turned down and he “never wanted to be interrupted again!”

First of all, nobody should ever walk into your apartment unannounced Lock your door. It prevents theft as well as unpleasant encounters.

Second of all, there are rules about what you are allowed to do in the comfort of your own home – and I’d done nothing wrong. On a Saturday afternoon I was playing music and it wasn’t his right to expect total silence.

After exchanging words, resulting in telling him to leave or I’d have to call the landlord and the police, he left.

An hour later, he returned, politely knocking and asking if we could discuss the issue. He was sorry for coming in uninvited, and realized he was invading my space. He had been annoyed with my music for hours while he tried to sleep – it wasn’t the first occasion I’d interrupted his sleep, he informed me. Although he was irate, he had come to realize I would have had no knowledge of this issue.

We talked. It turned out my new neighbour worked the night shift. He needed to sleep during daytime hours.

While I was within my rights listening to music at a reasonable level, it greatly affected his unusual schedule.

We could have gone on – me being well within my rights, him being miserable and angry – but instead we brainstormed a solution. He saw the layout of my home and decided to move his bedroom so that it didn’t share a wall with my den. I, in turn, moved my stereo and speakers so that they were along an exterior wall.

Problem solved, happy neighbours.

You can’t choose neighbours, and you can’t always have your demands met. But with communication and a little bit of consideration, there’s often a solution that makes everyone happy.

LOCATED CLOSE TO Parliament Hill and the ByWard Market, Rockcliffe Park is bordered by the Ottawa River in the north and west, the neighbourhood has a southern border that runs along Princess, Maple, Birch, St. Laurent, and Montreal Road.

The historic home of Canada’s parliamentary and diplomatic heritage, Rockcliffe Park has long been the pinnacle of prestigious neighbourhoods in Ottawa. Home to every parliamentary opposition leader since 1950, this is the area that Pierre Elliott Trudeau called home while he served as prime minister. His son continued the tradition by moving

back to the neighbourhood in 2013.

are underway to bring new growth in sustainable developments and stores to the area.

Residents here rely on OC Transpo’s bus service, and bicycles too. With close proximity to a huge array of amenities, it makes sense.

There’s quick and easy access to nature pathways along the Ottawa River, not to mention great dining options in the Byward Market.

Renters can expect to pay the same for a basement or one-bedroom apartment as you would for a twobedroom elsewhere in the city.

Taking into consideration that Canada’s chief representative to Queen Elizabeth would be your neighbour, Rockcliffe Park is a costly club to join. However, to gain entry there is to enjoy a place among Ottawa’s elite.

Five ways to make moving a cleaner, Greener process

WE NEED TO THINK of the environment with every activity - even moving day can be cleaner and Greener, and it doesn’t take much effort.

Waste caused by the moving process not only stems from packing supplies, but also from the waste accumulated over many years within a home. Both can be extremely taxing on the environment if not properly managed. Here are some suggestions on how to make your move a cleaner, Greener process:

1 Plan ahead. Waiting until the last minute to prepare for a move will make any environmental concerns an afterthought. Start early so you have the extra time to sort through recyclable items – in your apartment and in storage – for delivery to recycling depots prior to moving day. Typically your storage contains the highest concentration of recyclable waste, so start the sorting process there first. Consider holding a garage sale or donating gently used but no longer wanted items to a charity rather than have them end up in a landfill site.

2 Research. Survey local recycling options to find the most convenient solution for recyclables. Many cities offer curbside pick-up or “sort and drop” depots. Visit earth911.com for a list of local organizations that can dispose of all types of recyclable materials.

3 Organize. Prepare recyclables by organizing into categories: plastic, glass, aluminum, paper, cardboard, etc. Look up the requirements of the local recycler to see if there 12

are any additional steps needed to prepare recyclables beforehand.

4 Care for hazardous material. As you clean in preparation to move, be conscientious about the kinds of materials being packed to move with you and which items are to be disposed. Toxic items, such as paint, batteries, house cleaning products, automobile oils, pesticides and fertilizers are dangerous and cannot be transported in the back of a commercial moving truck.

Also consider these items cannot be thrown-out with your regular garbage. Look up the specialized recycling depots for toxic products in your city.

5 Reuse. Do not throw away used moving boxes when the move is complete. A well-made corrugated box is great for storage or may be reused for a future move or passed on to someone else who is moving. Contact local schools or charity organizations, such as women’s shelters, scout troops, and food banks to ask if they need boxes to redistribute donated items.

Donating gently used boxes not only reduces waste, but can be a big help in support of a good cause.

New study finds Ontario’s rental housing supply is facing a shortfall of over 6,000 units per year to meet annual demand Unless supply is addressed, vacancy rates will continue to decrease and limit renter choice THE FEDERATION OF RENTALHOUSING Providers of Ontario (FRPO)

launched the ‘Rent On’ campaign to address the issue of undersupply. A new study by Urbanation warns that rental housing supply will continue to diminish and vacancy rates will drop further unless at least 6,250 additional new rental units are built each year for the next decade, in addition to the expected level of new development.

The warning comes at a time when vacancy rates in the province have already fallen to critical levels – just 2.1 per cent across the province and 1.3 per cent in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) according to the CMHC 2016 Rental Market Survey.

The report, commissioned by FRPO, clearly illustrates the rental supply crisis, as do the number of canceled purpose-built rental

projects in the GTA. Before the introduction of Bill 124 earlier this year, proposed rental projects were at a 25 year high with 28,000 units in the planning pipeline. Since then, at least 1,000 planned rental units have already been canceled or converted to condos, including: • The King Portland Centre • Parkway Square Condos at Sheppard Ave. East in Toronto

Increasingly, Ontarians are choosing to rent for the lifestyle benefits and flexibility how more units can help. The end goal is to put pressure on decision makers to ensure there are adequate rental housing options. Ontarians can learn more at rent-on.ca and can join the conversation on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram using the hashtag #rentON. “This study truly underscores the urgency of Ontario’s current rental housing supply situation,” added Murphy. “If our government leaders fail to act now to address this crisis in a meaningful and sustainable way, the results will serve to further impact Ontario’s economy, such as through additional strain on our cities’ transit infrastructure as people are forced to commute further and further to find more affordable housing options.”

To address this problem, FRPO launched its ‘Rent On’ campaign encouraging Ontarians to ask the provincial government to take measures to allow for more housing choices for renters by introducing amendments to Bill 124.

“Ontario’s scarce rental housing supply combined with escalating house and condo prices have created a housing crisis in our biggest cities,” said Jim Murphy, president of FRPO. “The only solution is for Ontario to build itself out of this situation. This begins with our provincial leaders working with industry to identify and implement policies that create more purpose-built rental units, not less.”

Demographic trends in Ontario are leading to ever increasing demand for rental housing. Millennials, new immigrants, and aging boomers are all increasingly likely to rent, particularly given the high cost of home ownership.

The report notes that “projections indicate a substantial imbalance

between rental demand and supply in the Ontario marketplace over the next decade, which could reach potentially crisis levels in the absence of a meaningful increase in new purposebuilt [rental] development.”

Increasingly, Ontarians are choosing to rent for the lifestyle benefits and flexibility – especially among millennials and seniors.

3. Keep it dramatic I love creating cosy bedrooms. In my space I used a deep indigo blue called Krimson Lake by CIL Paints.

It is absolutely a myth that dark colours are inappropriate for small spaces – in a small space dark paint can make a room feel cozy, dramatic and inviting. I took the drama one step further by installing applied moulding from Metrie’s Very Square collection. 5. Make it smell good I use an essential oil diffuser in the bedroom in the morning to get me energized and in the evening to get my body ready for sleep. A few drops of lavender essential oil diffused in the room makes everything smell good and can do wonders to calm the nerves and aid in relaxation. And absolutely remember to not let the bedroom become a dumping ground for mess. You deserve the best sleep and a restful retreat after a long busy day. Commit to giving yourself this gift everyday!

iPhone speakers reach from the kitchen to my bathroom just fine.

King Size Bed: About two-thirds of the furniture I assembled from IKEA seemed a lot smaller online than in my actual rental. Now my bedroom looks like it could belong to Shrek.

Sound System: Besides the fact I would actually like to be on good terms with my neighbours, a sound system is just not at all necessary for my tiny apartment.

Managing the neighbours

you’ve experience your share of interesting neighbours. There are neighbours that turn into lifelong friends, neighbours you keep as acquaintances and dog walkers, and then there are the bad neighbours you tell stories about to your friends.

The loud neighbour, the nosey neighbour, the barking neighbour, the “I’m a jerk for no reason” neighbour — they all have a special spot in your story repertoire.

Like it or not, living with a bad neighbour is almost like a rite of passage in the renting world, and we all have to learn how to deal with it.

The loud neighbour Before accusing someone of being a loud neighbour, you need to take a few things into account. If you live in a basement of an old building, your upstairs neighbour is probably going to seem loud. There is a difference though, in regular

routine noise that unfortunately echoes through old buildings, from the recklessly loud and annoying schedule an actual loud neighbour insists on keeping. If you have a neighbour that consistently plays music at full volume past 11 pm, or that is just generally excessively loud at all hours, it can be unpleasant for everyone. So, how to deal with it?

The nosey neighbour When I think of a nosey neighbour, I picture the old lady that used to live next door to me, who never seemed to approve of male guests coming over. In reality, she was nothing in comparison to a legitimate nosey neighbour — a neighbour who is constantly prying into other tenants’ lives, seemingly trying to catch them doing something wrong, like painting their walls without asking the landlord. If it’s truly bothersome, you need to find a way to deal with it.

The passive-aggressive way: Make up some worrisome gossip about another tenant to send the nosey neighbour scurrying in fear to get them off your back.

The right way: You can talk to your neighbour and let them know you’re a private person and don’t always want to share everything with them — nicely. Or you can be kind and still chat with them, but avoid divulging too much information.

The barking neighbour If you’re annoyed with a dog barking in your building, try to remember that a little barking is normal for dogs, especially in busy buildings. If the barking is excessive — and happening

at all hours — then it’s a different story. You might be worried the dog is upset or alone too often. But you really don’t know, so again, you can go about this one of two ways.

The passive-aggressive way: Leave an unsigned note on the door for the owner telling them you’re going to call animal control.

The right way: Knock on your neighbour’s door and chat with them about their dog’s barking. It’s likely they don’t know that their dog barks when they aren’t home and they’d appreciate hearing your concern over a threat.

The disagreeable neighbour Ah, the worst neighbour of them all.

They are loud when you don’t want to be, call the landlord when you do want to be, and they don’t hold the elevator when you’re struggling to run in with multiple bags of groceries.

If they have a dog, the dog is always barking. If they don’t have a dog, they are always complaining about yours.

All around, they are the jerk of your community. How do we go about living with this kind of neighbour?

The passive-aggressive way: There are many options here. Call the cops when they are loud, make up gossip, leave them notes, be mean to them.

The right way: Be the bigger person and ignore their quirks. If something big comes up (bigger than them just not holding the elevator), go talk to them, or talk to your landlord about options that might work for everyone. Remember — sometimes we just happen to catch someone on a really bad day. They might not be so bad all the time.
