hether you’re relocating from one coast to the other or moving to your first place out of parents home, changing homes can be hectic, exciting and certainly stressful. But, relax.

You can eliminate all the anxiety sometimes associated with moving by taking control of the situation with confidence.

If you decide to move yourself, book a moving truck well in advance from a reliable company that can help you give you tips on moving as well as advice regarding the size of vehicle you will need.

If you decide to go with a pro, ask your friends and family for a recommendation of mover. Call at least three companies to ask about their services and then decide.

Professional movers can do everything for you if you wish, from packing and unpacking, to disconnecting appliances and electronics, but of course there’s extra cost involved.

Make sure you understand the terms of your agreement no matter what you decide as well any other additional costs, such as insurance and mileage costs so you can budget accordingly.

to make your move a little easier Gather boxes in all sizes from friends, neighbours and stores.

Collect cushioning materials like bubble wrap, foam pellets, furniture pads, blankets, plastic bags, tissue paper and newspapers to use as padding inside boxes.

Create a “portable packing kit” with marking pens, a tape measure, packing tape, twine and scissors.

Reinforce the bottom of boxes with extra tape for added strength.

Label each box with the name of the room in your new home where it should be placed and unpacked.

List the contents of the box on its side.

Number the boxes and keep a list of which boxes go in which room in your new home.

Label boxes containing fragile items with large red lettering.

It’s interesting that many people look at mattresses as merely a category, rather than what they are – personal furniture.

We spend about a third of our lives sleeping, so this simple item has a tremendous impact on our health and wellbeing. The good news is that lately, mattresses have taken an elevated place of importance, as celebrities are associating their names with manufacturers, specially branded products and their retailers. This practice has raised a new level of awareness and attracted attention to a topic that for far too long has been viewed as an afterthought by the general public.

A well-made mattress is, in fact, a piece of furniture that will last for years. In North America, most warranties cover a mattress for a decade, and they should perform well for that length of time. Despite warranty claims, some low-quality mattresses fail after only five or six years. This is significant enough that a mattress deserves to be selected with as much care as a dining table, dresser, sofa or the bed itself.

Speaking of mattresses as a piece of furniture, the sofa bed is another example. This popular item provides extra sleeping facilities for overnight guests without having to take up space in the room with a conventional full Double or Queensize bed. It is dual purpose functional furniture that if made properly, sits identically to a high quality sofa. Many of today’s designs are superior to those that were on the market years ago, but you will still find a range of quality.

The same issues confront shoppers when looking for the right sofa bed. Since the sofa bed offers two complete functions sit-and-sleep, you would expect to pay more for both qualities.

Unfortunately, when treated as a discount item it is built most often with a lesser quality mattress inside the bed-mechanism and the result is compromised sitting and sleeping. oving is a very personal thing and people who hire moving companies ask for varying levels of service.

Take packing, for example. Some clients want to pack their own items, while others prefer a turn key solution where the mover does it all. There are, of course, advantages to each approach, so it is important to choose what’s best for you.

It’s fairly small and is designed to hold small, heavy items like food jars or cans, flatware, CDs, etc. The next size up is a lamp or lampshade box, which is 3 cubic feet in size. The sizes go up from there, to 4.5 and 6 cubic feet for lighter objects such as pillows and stuffed animals.

These are just some of the moving materials that are available today. Whether you choose to pack your own items or have your mover do it, be sure you choose a company with a solid track record for providing topnotch service.

1 In a clean medium bowl, beat egg whites until foamy. Add instant coffee and salt and beat until combined. Gradually add 1/4 cup (50 mL) sugar and beat until soft peaks form. 2 In a separate bowl, whip the cream until soft peaks form. 3 Beat in vanilla and 1/2 cup (125 mL) of sugar. Fold cream into egg white mixture. 4 Fold in 1/4 cup (50 mL) slivered almonds and transfer to a large glass bowl or individual serving glasses and freeze at least two hours. 5 Garnish with remaining slivered almonds and grated chocolate. NC KITCHEN NOTES: I love this recipe because it’s quick, delicious and impressive and can be frozen for weeks!

Serve in a straight-sided glass bowl or trifle bowl or individual dessert nappe bowls.

Roasting nuts: Roast in a single layer on a cookie sheet at 350°F (180°C) for about 10 minutes. Allow them to get light brown, remove and cool.

uacamole dates back to the Aztecs, who referred to it as ahuaca-mulli which translates roughly as avocado sauce or avocado mixture. While there are many variations, traditional Mexican guacamole has only a few ingredients: avocado, onion, jalapeño chiles, fresh tomatoes, cilantro and salt, brightened with fresh lime juice and plenty of zest.

Of course, the real secret to great guacamole is good avocados, and Haas – the purplish-black variety with a bumpy skin – is considered to be the absolute best variety for making the richest, creamiest full-flavoured guacamole. However, to make Guacamole Auténtico, a traditional Mexican mortar and pestle, or molcajete, must be used. Made from lava stone, molcajete are available in many fine cookware shops.

DIRECTIONS

› Zest and juice the limes into a medium bowl. Slice the avocados in half, skin, pit and then dice the avocados. As you dice each avocado, add it to the bowl and toss to coat with lime juice they don’t brown. Add the tomatoes, onions, cilantro, jalapeño, salt and pepper and stir to combine well. Don’t be tempted to mash the avocados. Leave fairly chunky. Serve with tortilla chips and a cold Margarita or good beer.
